5 of 5  Great place, Wonderful People, A TripAdvisor Member, wisconsin, April 3, 2008

We stayed in March 2008 at The Shores and were thrilled. Had a 1st floor condo in the back, so the kids had a yard to play in, and it was quiet. The gated area was so quiet, after a long day of swimming, etc...it was nice to come back to a quiet place to relax. Our condo was very nice, the people who work there are amazing. Some of the friendliest people we've ever had the pleasure to deal with. (the airlines could learn something from their service!!!) We also really liked the gas grills available for having dinner in. Close to things to do, but not so close you are in the tourist trap the whole time.

5 of 5  A Great Place to Stay!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, cypress,ca, April 2, 2008

My husband and I visited the Big Island for our 25th wedding anniversary from 3-7-08 thru 3-14-08. We stayed at The Shores at Waikoloa. We loved everything about the property. We booked our whole trip thru Costco and got a very good deal. From what I understand most of the condos are individually owned and they rent them out. We stayed in room/condo #331. We were very impressed upon arrival. Very well mainained, even tho most reviewers say that most of the condos are outdated. But who care....you're in Hawaii!!!! We had a huge Lanai with about 3 or 4 Geckos that hung out with us as well. Our view looked a little bit North and a little East. The kitchen was well stocked with everything you could think of, although we only used the fridge to keep drinks cold. We had housekeeping every 3 days, they clean everything except whatever dishes you dirty. The grounds were very peaceful and even tho we were told there were no vacancies, we never really heard too much noise by any other occupants. If you are trying to decide whether to stay here or not......decide no more.....stay here and you wont be disappointed!!!! The Waikoloa resorts area is a very beautiful place and is away from all of the crowds down in Kona. They give you two sets of keys and a code # that opens the gate upon your return to the resort. If you need help deciding what to do while you are there, be sure to go see Bill, the concierge at the pool. He will help you plan your activities. And if you are going to snorkel, he will book you thru to the Fair Winds snorkel tour....you won't be disappointed with this tour either. And if you want a smaller tour go with the Hula Kai. They take a max of 40 people....18 and over only!!!! And the day that we went with them, they was only 20 of us.....it was awesome!!!! I've included some pictures of the condo, because if you're like me you like to see what rooms looks like when you are booking a room. Please enjoy and if you have any questions that you would like to ask me, please feel free to email me. The Shores is an awesome place to stay!!!!!!!

5 of 5  very relaxing, A TripAdvisor Member, Menlo Park, California, February 13, 2008

We stayed at the shores with a few friends for several days. We were very pleased with the property, the space of our suite, and the location. For that area, which is filled with pricy luxury hotels, the shores is a great deal and quite nice. Our neighbors were all quiet and one even let us borrow a cork screw when we couldn't find the one in our room (which was there, we just did not look hard enough).

You can walk to all the hotels in that area if you really want to sit around their pool (the shores is nice but small) and pay way too much for a bite to eat, or you can hop in your rental and head around the island for adventures and return to your nice quiet temporary home at the shores. Check in and out was smooth and the staff were all so friendly and happy! We will be going back next year.

5 of 5  Great rooms. Good location. Great service., A TripAdvisor Member, usa, January 15, 2008

Great rooms. We tsyaed in a one bedroom that was upgraded to two bedroom when we checked in. Big two bedroom unit with huge rooms, nice kitchen and well-kept though old utilities. Concierge service was nice. Overall very pleasant experience.

5 of 5  Unit 321 was absolutely awesome, A TripAdvisor Member, Fair Oaks, California, October 29, 2007

We stayed in unit 321 at the Shores. After reading the mixed reviews I was a little reluctant to book a room at this hotel, but somehow I found the unit 321 advertised on the internet by its owner, AJ. He himself manages this particular unit and we booked it directly with him through waikoloacondo.com That way we knew exactly where we were going to stay. It was very nice and extremely clean. It had everything you need, from sunscreen and shaving cream to kitchen utensils, beach mats, spices, snorkeling gear, movies, and Hawaii travel guides. The view from the terrace was gorgeous; you could see the sun rising on top of Mauna Kea. The closest beach is Anaehoomalu Beach next to Marriott, a short 10 minute walk (or 2 minute drive) from The Shores. My favorite beach was Mauna Kea Beach, a 10-minute drive north of Waikoloa. It was a wonderful stay and we cannot wait to go back.

5 of 5  Everything you could ask for..., A TripAdvisor Member, Hawaii, July 9, 2007

If you are looking for a place to vacation with the comforts of home…look no further. We stayed in a 2/2 condo unit and were pleasantly surprised upon entering the courtyard. A water fountain (see pics) and a flower garden greeted us as we headed toward the elevator. Each tower has three levels; we were on the third floor (see pic for overview).

Wow, what an amazing unit! It was immaculate, spacious, and wonderfully arranged. The master bedroom (sorry, forgot to take pic) is very roomy with two full closets and a walk in bathroom which includes his and her sinks, a separate shower and tub. The view from the master room overlooks the golf course with an ocean view. You can

also see the rocks from an overflow of lava, which is unique. The second room had two twin beds, a desk, full-size closet and access to the wrapping lanai balcony. Both rooms were very open and roomy. The guests of the second room were happy to see they too had their own separate tub and shower to use.

The living area (see pics) was impressive as it felt as if you were at home and not cramped up in a tiny unit. There was a large area in the living room and dining area. One of the sofas had a pull out bed so we could have easily fit six people, if we wanted to. We were delighted to see this room also had a dvd player, books from best selling authors, and even games (chess, uno, backgammon, etc) in our entertainment unit. What a wonderful touch. A breakfast nook was also in the room next to the kitchen. As I said the comforts of home are at your fingertips. A full-size refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, ample cooking and baking utensils are provided as well; even placemats. You can dine in or enjoy the view from the balcony lanai as there is an area to eat outside as well (see pics). The balcony wraps around from the living area to the second bedroom with three separate entrances. The washer and dryer in the unit made my life easier and the front desk sells laundry soap for a minimal fee.

The property has a pool (I believe it was heated), jacuzzi tub accessible with a key; and a place you can barbeque. Pool towels are already in your room so you don’t have to go back to the front desk. A fitness center and a tennis court are at your disposal as well. The grounds are impeccable and maintained daily. Also, the Waikoloa area has ancient petroglyphs (carvings of old Hawaii) dated from the 1400’s. A free tour is available at the Kings Court Shopping Center.

Caution: Please stay on the path and do not attempt to make rubbings of these petroglyphs. It will speed the deterioration of these carvings and this is a valued treasure of Hawaii.

Overall, I must say this was an amazing place to stay. It is a great place for couples, honeymooners, families, older travelers, and everyone in between. The employees are so very friendly and always willing to assist. We will definitely return to the Waikoloa Shores and highly recommend them! Thank you to Char and Jen for making our trip amazing and special.

5 of 5  Beautiful!!!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Baltimore, September 30, 2006

We just got back from a 7 night weddingmoon. The room was perfect. Check-in was quick and easy and they even had a bottle of wine and a box of chocolate covered mac nuts for us as a wedding gift. When we walked in to our condo, we were amazed at how comfortable we felt. The artwork was tasteful and it had a lot of culture. The floorplan was so open and inviting.

The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pots, pans, and utensils. The larger appliances were old, but they were still fully functional. We did a little grocery shopping at the Kings Shops, which was very expensive, but it's Hawaii- everything costs a bit more!

The bathroom was great. There was a separate garden tub and shower. Towels and soaps were changed daily-same service as a hotel. The lanai was huge! it wrapped around two sides of the condo. We had a great view of the pretty landscaping. They have a river with waterfalls going through the Waikoloa grounds.

For most of our stay, there was no one staying in the unit upstairs. When a couple did finally move in, we didn't hear too much out of them. Noise wasn't a problem at all. We didn't have any problems with bugs or anything. Our condo had an invisible screen at the front door, so we were able to get a great breeze without worrying about bugs flying around. There are a lot of geckos (i guess that's what they wer), so watch your step...

There is a nice beach at Waikoloa Village, so you don't have to travel very far for that type of entertainment. One of the Waterfall Hiking Trails picks up right at the Kings Shops. There are also helicopter rides available right up the street (2 miles maybe).

The drive back and forth to Kailua-Kona can be very long and tiring.... My only suggestion for that is to just rent a convertible and enjoy the warm, refreshing breeze as you're driving down Queen K Highway. By the way, there is a beautiful scenic overlook that you can stop at between the airport and Waikoloa for the best sunset pictures!!!!

Before the wedding, we visited with family and friends that came to see the ceremony. Their Kona hotels rooms didn't compare to our condo at all. While many of their rooms were small and had that musty hotel smell, we had our very own apartment! When we come back to the Big Island for our 1 year anniversary, we will stay at the Shores again.

5 of 5  Best value, A TripAdvisor Member, Pearl City, July 7, 2006

I highly recommend staying in this condo. Our large 2 bed/2 bath ground floor unit had everything we needed. Kitchen well supplied, 2 TV's, a stereo, comfortable living/dining area, central air and a huge master bath. Lots of vegetation and quiet made it truly seem like paradise. Close to the walking trails and the Beach Golf Course.

5 of 5  Superb Condo rental, A TripAdvisor Member, Los Angeles, March 20, 2006

Quite nice condo type accomidations. We really enjoyed the low density of other tourists, and the smattering of regulars living at this condo complex. I can't emphasize enough what a good deal this place is; Very spacious, a full kitchen, great location, etc.

There is a booking agent for local activities at the pool. We did not use this service. Activities are great on the big island. We really, really liked the whale watching boat. Our helicopter flight got rained out.

The pool was clean and quiet, about the size of your backyard pool. But you're in Hawaii, go to the beach man!

The walk to the beach was about 10 minutes, which was a very nice, white sand beach. Don't be confused by the path to the adjacent coral/rock area. Snorkeling is better in other locations rather than this beach.

The nearby Hilton is accessible via a short walk, but we recommend the "Kings shops" area as less cluttered with people. Roy's and the steakhouse restaurant rate 8 of 10 and 7 of 10 respectively. The beach grill (the closest restaurant) is a bit over priced and we'd give it a 6 or a 5. For a very cheap meal there is a subway and a dairy queen hidden in the kings shops. The local plate lunch hut is up in waikaloa village up the road 5 miles. The market in the Kings Shops area is a bit small (not a full grocery) but you can find most things. Prices are surprizingly reasonable. A larger grocery is up the road in Waikaloa village.

We suggest a drive up to Hawi at the northern tip, about 30 minutes north. Nice restaurant and ice cream shop there.

Outtings to the Volcano take 2 hours to get there (one way). Plan on a full day. Drivers in Hawaii travel at an average of 50 mph ... so plan accordingly. ;-)

5 of 5  The perfect Vacation, even with 2, 14 year old girls, A TripAdvisor Member, Sylmar, California, August 21, 2004

We visited the Big Island 5/04 & stayed at "The Shores at Waikoloa" as soon as we got there everything was great, from the grounds to the pool. The girls could not wait to go swimming, we did one evening & barbacued hamburgers right outside the pool area. We arrived a little earlier than our room was ready, but not to worry, we visited the tour desk (that is set up right up in the pool area) & got all our tours set up. The hotel counsier was a big help to budget out our tours. Our room was perfect, the total of our party were 4 adults & 2, 14 year olds, we adults had our own bedrooms & the girls had the couch sleeper. We had a great time on our tour of the Big Island, with Robert's tours. Our tour guide Charlie was great, he even made palm roses for the women & fish for the men. We had a beautiful time at the hotel, the condo rooms were great, the maid service was fantastic, even the grounds keepers were very helpfull & friendly. Don't forget to check out all the free tours at the King's shopping center down the road, there great & very educational. My favorite was the "Kings Trail" again the tour guide was exceptional..... I spent many a night taking pictures of the stars & the grounds by night & day, the grounds are that lovely... We expect to go back.

5 of 5  The best value in Hawaii, A TripAdvisor Member, July 10, 2004

This is the best palce I have stayed on any island.

The rooms are huge( 1000 sq) and private, the grounds super secure and gaited. I got a 1 bed ground floor and found I got a private garden/ yard.

You are in the midst of the best resort, across the street from the Hilton for 1/2 the price....

Has golf in the property eith putting green. Beach a short walk... feels like a country club and no wild types...... Saved 100 per night and spent far less than other condos

4 of 5  Great, quiet place to stay!, A TripAdvisor Member, rockaway, nj, August 2, 2008

We stayed at the Resortquest Shores at Waikoloa from July 21-the 26th. We had a great time!!

We aren't big "resort" people, and knew we wanted to spend most of our time driving around exploring the Big Island. The Shores was perfect for us!! There's not too much going on right on the property (although the pool and hot tub felt great after a long day of exploring the island!), but it is nice and quiet. Besides, we didn't come all the way to Hawaii to just hang out at the resort! :-) If you have young kids and are looking to have more activities for them right at the hotel, this may not be the place for you, though. (try Hilton Waikola Village, right across the street)

The other thing to know is that these are privately owned condos that are managed by Resortquest. So some condos are more updated than others, depending on what the owners have done to it.

We were in Unit 317 and it was WONDERFUL!! Nice, new wood laminate flooring and new couches in the living room, the king sized bed had a super comfy memory foam mattress topper on it, and the bathroom had a HUGE tile shower with 2 shower heads!! It wasn't ocean view, but we had a great view of Mauna Kea mountain from our lanai. The kitchen appliances could use some updating- but why would you cook when you're on vacation anyway?! :-)

So basically, the Shores was a great place to stay- clean and quiet. I would recommend it if you are going on vacation without kids, or if you're kids are older.

4 of 5  We loved it, A TripAdvisor Member, Hawaii, October 17, 2007

We stayed at this hotel starting October 6, 2007 for five nights, and we loved it. It has a nice setting, beautiful lush gardens. The grounds are carefully manicured, nicely tended to, the golf course just nearby. The closes beach was near the Marriott, just minutes away by car. Their pool looked smallish; we haven’t used it busy with the many things to do on the Big Island.

Our unit was a ground floor two bedroom unit. We had a pond in front of the living room.

We got upgraded at arrival to a two bedroom unit, we got a bottle of red wine, and chocolates… Nice gesture, friendly staff.

We didn’t like the $9.95/day charge for the internet. Our unit was fully functional, the kitchen and bathroom nothing to brag about, but at the end it was a pleasant stay at this place.

4 of 5  it depends on which unit you get, A TripAdvisor Member, California, January 6, 2007

I stayed at the Shores in the first week of January 2007.

I was lucky in getting a third floor unit in great condition. It was nicely decorated and altogether pleasant. There was a washer-dryer (which I did not use) and a full kitchen. The old electric stove was a dinosaur but perfectly adequate for my needs. I liked the tile in the kitchen and bath and loved the huge lanai.

I attended a conference at the Hilton and am really glad I did not stay there. It's huge and impersonal. I loved my condo kitchen, peace and quiet, breezes through the many windows with good cross-ventilation. My views were of the tops of beautiful trees and the red tile roofs of the complex. One exotic bird with a haunting call made me feel like I was really in a place different from home.

The ground floor units at the Shores seemed much less desirable. I looked at a second floor unit with views of the parking lot which did not have the same feel as my lovely unit (#331).

You can only request what you want here, not reserve it. When I arrived they said they had no third floor units. I hemmed and hawed, and, upon closer inspection of the list -- voila! --- a third floor unit.

It would be nice if the cleaners would make the bed and tidy up just a little. I'm talking about 5 more minutes of their time. They are very nice -- I met two of them -- and just doing what they have been told to do. They only change towels and empty wastebaskets.

I shopped at the Waikoloa Village for groceries -- very nice grocery store an easy 8 mile drive away. They have yummy tropical delights -- guava juice and jam, fresh pineapple, very good sushi (for packaged) and an interesting locally made sausage. I ate well and spent the same as I would have at home. Of course I had some meals at the conference but I hate eating out all the time so I really appreciated the kitchen. I liked seeing the locals at the grocery store.

The King's Shops nearby weren't bad. They didn't seem that much more expensive than California where I live (well I mean not including Bulgari, etc.). I bought a great pair of Merrell water shoes and a hand batiked cotton sun dress in a tapa print -- something I could not have found in California. They had an excellent slack key guitarist the night I was there. It was hokey but fun to see the tourists trying to learn Hawaiian dance. The dancer with long grey hair and immense grace was a pleasure to watch (and boy did she look good compared to the tourists).

If you can manage to get a good unit, the Shores is really very very nice. It's cheaper than the Hilton and much quieter and friendlier.

If you do go to the Hilton, parking is a nightmare. Although it's an easy ten minute walk from the Shores, I drove because I was lugging my computer and conference stuff. The lot is jam packed, the aisles are too narrow and people park at the ends of the rows because there isn't enough parking. I would not stay at the Hilton for anything. The staff are unfriendly -- I had to interact with them several times over conference matters. I'm sure they are underpaid and overworked so it's not their fault. The Hilton nickel and dimes you at every turn. The self-parking was $9.00 per day but luckily the conference had paid for it for me.

Conference goers -- they do have wonderful conference space, so I have to give them credit for that.

There is little to do around here unless you like golf. I'm glad I didn't bring my family. The lagoon at the Fairmont is good swimming. Just turn at the sign that says Mauna Lani, park, and walk to the left till you get to the Fairmont (10 minutes). Beaches are public so they can't kick you out. I even used one of the Fairmont's beach chairs ;) I went to Hapuna Beach and found it totally uninteresting. Others like it though. To me it was just a long patch of sand with no scenic interest.

The sunsets are gorgeous here and the warmth and sweetly scented air always make Hawaii special even though this is my least favorite place in Hawaii. I loved Volcano on the other side of the island, Kauai, and Maui. Hilo is impressively funky. Even Honolulu is a blast and there are stunning beaches about a 45 minute drive from Honolulu so I'll be back to Oahu.

4 of 5  Pleasant Stay, A TripAdvisor Member, Orange County, CA, August 20, 2006

(booked thru Costco Travel)

Just returned from a five day stay at the Shores at Waikoloa, it was my first visit to the Big Island. Overall, I had a pleasant experience. Unlike the previous review, the condition of the condo unit we stayed at was good (#136). The kitchen was well maintained with dishes and utensils, and the appliances were new. Bathrooms, although somewhat dated, were in good condition, functional and clean. Furnishings were in good condition, and the decor was contemporary. Paint was decent, and carpeting was fairly clean. Washer/dryer is located in the condo unit, and is the vertically stacked type. It was functional, though capacity is smaller than the super capacity ones at home. Laundry detergent packets are available on request. Central type A/C unit worked well, odorless and was quiet. Phone: local calls (anywhere on the Big Island) are free, and there was an answering machine unit also. If I had one complaint, it would be about the beds. They were too soft, and not supportive enough for my tastes. Also, since I had a ground level unit, I could hear the upstairs neighbors walking on the floor; which I find typical of wood frame construction, but this did not bother me that much. (There was no noise from next door neighbors on same floor, since most of the walls were not common.)

Service there was friendly and prompt. Calls to the front desk for service for cleaning up the broken glass in the dishwasher, and changing the dead TV remote control battery, yielded service within a few minutes.

Facilities at the resort: there is a moderate sized outdoor pool which is well maintained, and a jacuzzi, but both are nothing special. Depth of the pool was about 4 1/2 ft all the way across, so a little too deep for very young children to stand. If you're looking for a near water-park type experience however, check out the Hilton Waikoloa Village down the street. I believe there are also tennis courts at the Shores, but I did not use them.

The resort is quiet, and well maintained and landscaped, and offered a relaxing environment, but, there really wasn't a lot to do there, especially if you not into golf. The same is true of the Waikoloa area, unless you go over to the Hilton to use their facilities (need to pay a resort fee.) Casual family-friendly dining was pretty much limited to food court at the Kings Shop mall down the street. (The mall draws it customers only from the resort area.) Or maybe cooking yourself in the condo kitchen!!! -If you do, get your groceries in Kona. There may be other dining or supermarket options in the local town of Waikoloa Village, which is about 8 miles up from the resort area, but I did not have a chance to take a close look.

Just a last few notes: the office is open until 11pm, so you don't have to worry about arriving late. Finding the place after dark (the sun sets before 7pm) is somewhat difficult as the street signs in the resort area are not clearly labeled and there are no street lights, so the place is pitch dark.

In summary, the Shores is a pleasant place to stay: clean and well equipped, quiet, relaxing, and secluded. However, if you're looking for lots of local shopping, numerous dining options, or nightlife, you should probably look elsewhere.

Hope that helps.

4 of 5  Beautiful but not the "Hawaii experience" - for us, at least, A TripAdvisor Member, Seattle area, August 7, 2006

The grounds and buildings at SaW are beautiful and it feels like you're in an oasis - but you could be in Palm Springs or any other tropical golfing environment - there's nothing to tell you you're in Hawaii. (Contrary to its name, you are nowhere near any "shores".) We stayed in 2 different, 2 bedrm deluxe units. Both were incredibly spacious - as big as a home - with huge, covered lanais complete with lounging and dining furniture and wet bars, huge bathrooms/dressing areas with large soaking tubs, ample room for a group of people without tripping over one another. One overlooked the central water feature (pond w/fountains) and the other looked past the golf course to Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Peaceful and lovely to look at, but to us it didn't feel like we were in Hawaii because we weren't near the water or couldn't see the water. Units are individually owned and the 2 we stayed in were maintained in what we consider below-average condition. In the first, all the kitchen appliances were original (early 1980's) - serviceable but outdated (we could hardly remember how to make a microwave that old work); the central two strips of the vertical window blinds in the master bedroom were missing, so when you closed the blinds there was a 6" gap in the middle (no privacy if you turned on a light or used the bathroom at night - we ended up sleeping in the 2nd, smaller bedroom); the in-room washer/dryer was one of the amenities we specifically wanted, yet the dryer was broken; etc. The kitchen was adequately stocked with dishes, etc. In the 2nd unit we stayed in, the kitchen was set up with enough dishes and glassware for the size of group you'd expect could stay there, lots of utensils, etc. All the appliances were brand new yet the off-white carpet was horribly stained, the cloth upholstery on the sofa arm was shredded, and the livingroom/dining room was in desperate need of a paint job (I mean, REALLY bad - not just a scuff here & there). Now this is a very nice complex, the condos undoubtedly are very expensive to own, and there is absolutely no reason for the condition of these interiors to be so poor. For what you're paying per night, everything should work and be first-rate. We rate our overall experience as Above Average due to the grounds and size/features of the condos and how quiet it is (you're in a gated community) - not due to their condition. A couple of general comments about the complex: pool towels are available at the office, not the pool, which isn't convenient. You need a key to not only let yourself into the pool or into the hot tub area, but also to LEAVE either area! If you like to BBQ, there are a few common BBQ areas but not very close to some units so you might not find them convenient. If you're concerned about insects, we didn't see any in either unit we stayed in. A few comments about the Waikoloa area: the food choices are (1) fast food in a food court or (2) gourmet and expensive (dinners $30-$40). There isn't anything like teriyaki take-out or moderate restaurants or a pancake house. Because the nearest grocery store is about 9 miles away, cooking for yourself isn't all that easy. If you enjoy fine dining, there are a lot of choices and those meals we ate were absolutely delicious. It's just that we prefer not to eat like that for every meal. So unless you drive about 30 min. to Kona for other choices, this is what you face in Waikoloa. Staying in Waikoloa instead of Kona adds about 1 hour total to what's already an all-day trip to the volcanoes, so if you'd like more food choices (and grocery stores) and to be closer to the volcanoes, Kona would be a better choice. But if you're a golfer, this is where the action is.

4 of 5  Quiet and relaxing, A TripAdvisor Member, New Zealand, July 22, 2006

After 6 days in O'ahu, arriving at the shores was a pleasure as the resort is so quiet and spacious, the grounds are lovely with a very nice pool area. Our accomodation was the 2 bedroom/2 bathroom condo and it was huge, our party was 3 adults and 2 teenagers and there was plenty of room. The owners of the condo are a couple from San Fransisco and they have decorated it beautifly, the thickest carpets, amazing painting, well chosen furnature and everything in the kitchen you could possibly need. The owners leave a big file full of suggestions on what to do which was really helpful.

We had a rental car which is a must as the resort is half an hour from Kailua-Kona and it would be very hard to get to see the Volcanoes etc. without a car unless you book expensive tours. It's a long daytrip to Volcanoes National park but well worth it, we stopped along the way at Waipi'o Valley lookout, Akaka falls, Hilo and rainbow falls, it was a great day.

If you need a supermarket it's worth taking the drive into Waikaloa village as the "Whalers store" in the Kings shops is a complete rip-off". We found the restuarants in the Kings shops quite expensive except for the food court and the fish and chip place at the back.

I guess the problem with this resort could be that as all the condo's seem to be privately owned there may be inconsistensy in the quality however we were very very happy with ours as the owners seem to have a taste for the best.

4 of 5  Enjoyable Experience Overall, A TripAdvisor Member, Ontario, August 16, 2005

We stayed in a 1-bedroom condo at the end of July/beginning of August at the Shores had a thoroughly enjoyable experience overall with this resort. Our unit was big, spacious, and comfortable. The fully-equipped kitchen and washer and dryer are features to have while on vacation. Some of the wood trim, furniture, and bathroom areas are beginning to show their age but overall our unit(s) were very nice.

The Shores is located within a larger resort complex known as the Waikaloa Resort which has a number of other hotels, shops, and restaurants. Keep in mind that Waikaloa is at least 25-30 minutes (without traffic) north of the tourist center of Kailua-Kona. So if you're looking for accomodation that is right in the middle of all the action of Alii Drive, this is not the area or hotel for you. However, if you're in search of a newer, quieter self-contained resort area that is within a reasonable driving distance to a number of the island's great beaches (Hapuna Beach was great), tourist attractions (Kona, Waipio Valley, Kohala Coast, Hamakua Coast, Akaka Falls etc), then the Waikoloa Resort and the Shores is probably good option.

We did have a minor annoyance in our unit at first, which was quickly taken care of by the Shores staff and by the end of the week, we were feeling like this place was home. The first unit we were assigned had "ghost" ants in the bathroom sink area and bedroom area (apparently rather common in tropical locales). We came in on the last flight of the night, it was late and we were tired from a day of travel. Furthermore, the front desk closes at 11PM so we ignored the ants for the night. The next morning, we reported the ants to the front desk and were relocated to another unit without hassle or question. A nice touch was the apology card and complimentary box of mac nut chocolates left for us when we arrived in our new unit! (which was great and free of ants and annoyances.)

When we return to the Big Island, we will definitely think about staying at the Shores again.

4 of 5  Relaxing condo experience, A TripAdvisor Member, Honolulu, HI, March 23, 2004

Just got back from a very relaxing stay at The Shores at Waikoloa. The interiors are somewhat dated looking, but overall is very comfortable.

Our 1 bedroom/ 1 1/2 bath unit had a full kitchen with plates, glassware & cutlery for 4, microwave, full refrigerator, stove/oven, blender, toaster, coffeemaker, dishwasher, washer/dryer, plus coffee starter kit, dishwashing soap, pots, pans, cutting boards etc. Large living room had sofa sleeper, 2 chairs plus coffee table, 2 corner tables w/lamps and large TV. Dining alcove had round table & 4 chairs.

Large wrapround lanai had 4 chairs but was missing a table...no problem, used one of the lamp tables from inside. Bedroom had 2 double beds and a smaller TV. Bathroom had double sink and large soaking tub & shower. All over there was lots of storage space with shelves & drawers. Also, lots of mirrors made the unit seem even larger. The carpet was a little threadbare in some places. Nice landscaping throughout gardens and lots of flowers and ponds. Pool area is decent--not fancy--curved swimming pool, also has a jacuzzi. The pool is open 8am-9pm. The concierge desk is next to the pool and so are the soda and snack vending machines. BBQ grills are also available just outside the pool area. There are 2 tennis courts, and the guest registration desk has rackets and balls. There is free covered parking and free local calls. There is no restaurant here, but The Beach Grill restaurant is just outside the gate. (Not even a 5 minute walk away.) It's a short drive to The Hilton Waikoloa, The Marriott Waikoloa Resort and The King Shops. Overall a great place to spread out and relax while remaining in a very upscale resort area. All the employees are also very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely stay here again.

4 of 5  Great location, Great for families, A TripAdvisor Member, San Francisco, CA, March 21, 2004

THis is definitely a great place to relax in when you visit the big island. THe accomadations are great with huge rooms, clean service, friendly staff, nice location on the golf course, and convience of kitchens. It is the best place for families on a budget to enjoy large rooms and a kitchen where you can cook and save on your food budget. It is located only 15 min away from the airport and downtown Kona area and is also situated within Kailua-Kona village where there is King's Village where there are different types of shops and restaurants, and other hotels are situated in the same area where you can explore different hotels. And the village also has its own beach area which is very convient and there is no need for a car because it is easy walking distance within the village area. This condo is definately great for families or big groups of people. The price is right for its amenities, location, and cleanliness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (travel was in Jan 2004)

We stayed at 3 separate locations on our 9 day trip to the Big Island. We chose ResortQuest Shores at Waikoloa for our last night as it was close to the airport, much more so than our previous night’s stay in Volcano. What a complete disappointment.

These places appear to have been built in the 80s and nearly everything in unit#103 appeared original. The appliances were old and outdated, the cheap plastic vertical blinds in every room (probably the cheapest on the market when they were new in 1980) offered little in the way of privacy, the outdoor furniture was old, the dated, stained and cracked yellow tiles on the countertops told a story of how much use the place had seen, the kitchen and bath fixtures were anchient, even the TV was old and had a cracked cabinet, probably a result of having once hit the ground. The owner(s) are not only uninterested in renovating, they're apparently also uninterested in basic repairs.

Additional issues included dark particles and rust in the ice from the icemaker. While it was only ice, which was free, this did contaminate the contents of our drinks which were not. And who knows how much of this we ingested before it was noticed. Additionally, the carpet was old and frazzled in places and the fabric on the dining set was disgustingly filthy.

Unit# 103 provided a disappointing finale to an otherwise enjoyable 9-day trip to the Big Island.

We will never return to ResortQuest Shores.

2 of 5  Nice grounds, rundown interior, A TripAdvisor Member, washington, January 1, 2007

We just returned from a 2 week stay at the Shores at Waikola, unit 112, booked through Costco. They have beautiful, well-kept grounds with nice water features. The pool was small and could get crowded much of the time. The large lanai was quite nice. However the unit was run down and needed repairs. The oven and stove were not working properly making cooking difficult. The faucet in the Master Bath dripped non-stop (it's open to the master bedroom). The DVD player was non-operational and we were told they'd have to get permission from the owner to purchase a new one-we never heard back-a big deal with an 8-year old to entertain in the evenings with new Christmas videos. We had to vacate the condo while they sprayed for insects but we still had bugs including cockroaches. Whenever there were guests in the unit above ours it was quite loud. Overall it was dated and needed work. We would not choose the Shores again-for not much more we could have stayed in a more modern, attractive complex in the area. Waikoloa itself is very nice if you want quiet and room to walk...Kona is getting quite crowded these days.

Property grounds are beautiful and peaceful.I have stayed here 5 times over past 10 years and the condos have seriously deteriated.Stayed in 304 from Dec 6 - 15, new furnishings but kitchen and bathroom original. Lots of cracks in sinks and tubs, resulting in thick mold and or dirt. Fridge had a large hole. The worst was the fireants which seemed to live in the tile grout. The hardest bed I have slept on.

The condos and lanai are huge and beautifully furnished if resortquest would updated the kitchen and bathrooms it would be a perfect condo.

The staff extremly pleasant and accomodating and always apologising.

2 of 5  Large but need remodeling, A TripAdvisor Member, Oregon, August 29, 2006

We stayed here based on reviews that we read in Summer, 06. We had a ground floor unit #122. It was a large 2 bedroom unit - we liked that. However, be aware that these units are now ~20 years old. Ours had not been remodeled.

The kitchen appliances were vintage original 80's. The fridge icemaker didn't work. The carpeting in this paricular unit was absolutely filthy. Also the sound deadening is not great. If you have kids in a unit above you (as we did) you will know it.

If you just need a place to crash while enjoying the island its ok. If you like a clean place skip 122.
