5 of 5  Hotel Madera was Wondeful!, A TripAdvisor Member, Clark, New Jersey, April 30, 2009

We stayed during easter break, so our room rate was high. That said, we were thrilled with our choice. Our room was lovely. Beds were truly comfortable. Great balcony. The bathroom was tiny but who cares? The shower pressure was perfect. The sink and makeup area are seperate and there was plenty of room for my husband, son and myself. The staff was terrific. The adjacent restauarnt, Firefly was fantastic. The location is absolutely perfect. Dupont Circle is the best and the Metro station is really close by. Loved the neighborhood. LOVED HOTEL MADERA. Have already recommended it to others andwould absolutely stay here again.

5 of 5  Love the hotel, the staff, and the area, A TripAdvisor Member, Atlantic City,NJ, April 28, 2009

I took my husband to Hotel Madera in March for his birthday. He said it was the best birthday ever. We had such a wonderful time I booked another weekend as soon as we returned. We love the hotel because as with every Kimpton Hotel we can bring our dog. They have certain floors where pets are allowed to stay; they do this in respect for other visitors who have pet allergies. We also love this hotel because of its staff. They remembered us from our last visit and were just as friendly as the last time. Another reason why we love the hotel is because of the area. We enjoy yoga, and in the area there are so many yoga studios to choose from. We also love the area not only for the yoga but also for the restaurants. For a unique experience, it is within walking distances in Georgetown try Mi en Yu (http://www.mienyu.com/) and if you are a meat-a-terian (meat lover) go to Fogo De Chao (http://www.fogodechao.com/) it is a short taxi ride, and well worth it!!! On our last day of our trip we relaxed in the park at DuPont circle and talked to the locals. They told us on our next trip to the area that we should take the water taxi from Georgetown to Alexandria. With that being said we booked another stay for July! Parking in the area is difficult, curbside is free yet limited to 2 hours on weekdays, but if you park after 6:30 curbside on Friday parking is unlimited for the weekend. We arrived at 5:00, parked curbside in front of the Arabic Embassy (across the street from the hotel), which I was told by the hotel staff that I may get ticketed since it wasn’t 6:30 yet, but I saw some Embassy staff outside and thanked them for allowing me to park there, they were very gracious that I thanked them they didn’t call the police to ticket me. You can valet park, it is $36 for cars and approximately $56 for larger vehicles.

Hello Jillyjill411,

Thank you for your posting and staying with us. I am glad you and your husband celebrated his birthday at the hotel. I see the staff remembered you from your last visit . Thank you for staying and see you again soon!

5 of 5  Very nice hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Ottawa Canada, April 14, 2009

We had an excellent AAA rate ($126). The hotel is very nice, while the bathrooms are very small, the room itself was large. Location is ideal, very close to the Metro, restaurants in the area, and situated in a neighbourhood. Would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again. Front desk staff was very friendly and efficient, we enjoyed meeting Zoe, the cutest little dog you could imagine !

Owner response, Kimpton Hotels Washington DC, April 15, 2009

Hello Canuck,

I am glad that you were able to stay with us during your recent trip to Washington DC. I am glad you felt “the hotel (was) very nice.” I agree that the hotel is situated in a great area right in the heart of Dupont Circle. We are close to shops, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and much more. Zoe is a cute little happy dog. We not only allow pets we encourage them. Thank you for visiting and please come back and stay again soon!

5 of 5  Great Location & Nice Room, A TripAdvisor Member, Los Angeles, April 6, 2009

This was our first time at the Hotel Madera though my husband has stayed in, and liked, other Kimptom hotels. We originally booked a standard king room for $169/night. When I checked the website again a few days before our trip I saw a AAA rate for a larger queen room with a balcony for $144/night. I called the hotel and they willingly changed our room reservation and rate.

The hotel staff were very accommodating and took care of requests promptly.

The room was very large and well appointed. It had a sofa and two chairs. We didn't make use of the balcony due to weather but it was nice to have a front facing room. My only complaint is that the bathroom area with the toilet and bathtub is extremely small.

If the price remains reasonable we will definitely stay at the Hotel Madera again on our next trip to Washington, D.C. The location is great, very close to Dupont Circle and the Metro.

We didn't eat in the restaurant but on the recommendation of other Trip Advisor reviewers had a nice breakfast one day at the nearby Luna Grill & Diner. It was not inexpensive but the food and service were good and it's a very homey place.

Owner response, Kimpton Hotels Washington DC, April 7, 2009

Hello SusanLLosAngeles,

Thank you for staying with us during your recent trip to Washington DC. I am glad that you were able to book an upgraded room. I know that the staff will be pleased to hear that they were “very accommodating and took care of requests promptly.” I am glad that you liked the large room and the sofa and balcony and I do understand where you are coming from with the bathrooms. However, one benefit with Kimpton Hotels is that no two properties are alike. While the Hotel Madera has a small intimate atmosphere with a residential feel other larger Kimpton Hotels in Washington DC and Virginia such as the Monaco’s or Palomar’s have wonderful rooms with jetted tubs and separate showers. There is a lot of choice. I hope that you will come back and visit again soon! Thank you and have a nice day!

5 of 5  Love this hotel!, A TripAdvisor Member, Redmond, WA, April 5, 2009

During spring break, I took my two daughters, 11 and 9 to DC and stayed for 3 nights. We've booked this hotel through Priceline without much expection and it blew us away. The room (1001?) was a corner room and it was very large with two double beds. It has a large desk with all the setup for a computer station. I pluged my laptop into the ethernet cable provided to get on the free internet. The room was beautifully decorated with lot of amenities: stero with iPod dock, umbrella, flat screen TV, a large couch, bath and toilet separated from the large sink area. The giraffe-print bath rope was nice but way too big for me. Oh, they welcome dogs and even provided things for your four-legged friends.

There's no coffee machin in room but they brought one in after I called the front desk. There are only two coffee filter bags and the maid won't replenish it. I guess you can get more if you call but it was fine for me. I used it for tea. The morning coffee service was good and I enjoyed holding a cup on my way out. We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel but we did tried the Firefly restaurant one night. I love the small plate menu and my girls enjoyed their gourmet kid's menu. We shared a sundae with brownie on the bottom and it was excellent.

A nice touch is that they lend out the yoga accessoried free of charge. From the brochure, it says they have a yoga channel on #29 but we've found it on channel #30. However, it was looped on the first chapter of a yoga DVD, which only contains the introduction talk. I've informed the front desk and it took them 2 days to make some change - another yoga DVD's intro chapter! We did some yoga in our room and it has the room for at least 3 mats.

The neighborhood is very nice. There are lots of interesting little shops at Dupone Circle. My favorite is the Cramerbooks bookstore with it cafe. It only till past midnight on weekends, I was told. We didn't eat there but judging from the long line and the plates we saw other people were having, the food was great and reasonably priced.

On Sunday morning, when we tried to catch the Double Decker Bus at Dupone Circle, we were pleasantly surpried to find a very lively farmer's market near Mass. and R street. We've bought the drinkable yogurt and pastries and strolled through the stalls, taking in the sight of fresh flowers and veggies offered by the farmers.

It was a great experience to visit DC during the cherry blossom season and Hotel Madera made it even more enjoyable for all three of us. After a long day of sightseeing, our spacious room was our santurary for relaxation.

5 of 5  Great Stay, A TripAdvisor Member, PA, February 16, 2009

We had a great one night stay at Hotel Madera. We stayed in a King Deluxe on the 9th floor. We had a quiet night without any hallway or room noise from other guests at any time. The room was very clean and the bed was very comfy. Some may find the bathroom too small for their tastes, but I didn't mind. It was clean with the shower having good water pressure and temperature. The shower head was easily adjusted, which I liked as well. The complimentary wine hour was a nice way to relax after our arrival. And the cookies and milk were a nice treat upon returning to the hotel in the evening. All of the hotel staff members we encountered were very friendly and helpful.

We weren't planning on eating at Firefly, but upon seeing the menu, decided to eat dinner there. We enjoyed our meal and were glad to have tried it.

I would definitely stay here again. It's great value for the money and very close to the Metro - a great home base for exploring DC.

5 of 5  great place to stay!, A TripAdvisor Member, North Carolina, January 25, 2009

This hotel has character, helpful, friendly staff, comp. wine in the evening, comp. coffee in the a.m., is in a safe and convenient location (I walked everywhere), was clean, had a spacious and well-appointed room, complete with bathrobes, iron, ironing board, hairdryer, plus a sliding glass door that opened up onto a balcony overlooking the mostly residential street. I'd stay there again and also recommend it. Formerly an apartment building, today it offers D.C. visitors a welcoming and wonderful place to relax and enjoy a great American city!

Hello RamblesWithRosie.

Thank you for your comments about the hotel. We are happy you enjoyed your room and the amenities in it. Please come back and visit soon!

5 of 5  Loved the Madera, A TripAdvisor Member, Newtownards, January 6, 2009

My husband and I have just returned from a week's stay at the Madera in Washington DC. We were visiting our daughter who decided to stay in the hotel with us, The location was excellent for metro connections. Our room was spacious and the bathroom very well appointed. The nightly milk and cookies was a really nice homely touch which our daughter (22 years old) thoroughly enjoyed. Many thanks to Kellie and the other staff members who helped make our stay most enjoyable. Will definitely recommend this hotel.

5 of 5  A Wonderful Hotel Experience, A TripAdvisor Member, Arizona, January 5, 2009

We stayed at Hotel Madera from January 1 to January 5, 2009. From the moment we walked through the doors, we were impressed by the friendliness of the hotel staff. Michael checked us in promptly and efficiently. We were advised of the hotel's amenities, including cookies and milk after 10:30 p.m.; Starbuck's coffee and a paper in the morning; and wine from 5:00 to 6:00 each evening. We stopped by the cocktail hour about 5:00 p.m. and Kelli cheerfully described and poured a Spanish red and a California white for us. We stood chatting and drinking wine for 30 minutes or so.

Our room was exactly as described on the hotel's website. The bed had clean, fluffy linens and wonderfully comfortable pillows. There were animal print robes for use in the room and Aveda products in the bathroom. The bathroom, though small, was clean. There was plentiful hot water and the water pressure in the shower was fine. Our top floor room (which we requested online) had a beautiful view.

We asked Michael for a recommendation for a nearby ethnic restaurant. He suggested Lalibela, a nearby Ethiopian restaurant. We followed his recommendation, and directions, and enjoyed a lovely meal. We also enjoyed Sunday brunch at Firefly, the hotel's restaurant.

We couldn't have been happier with our visit and will stay at Hotel Madera each and every time we return to D.C. Two thumbs up!

Fantastic hotel, in the heart of Dupont Circle. The staff is fantastic and extremely helpful. It is convenient to the Metro.

5 of 5  great deal, A TripAdvisor Member, boston, December 7, 2008

Really nice hotel for the price. Great location. Rooms are small - European in size, but who cares? Get out and enjoy DC. Also, small rooms reduce your energy expenditure on climate control. Would definately return. Attached bistro is also a fine choice if you really don't want to go out of the hotel.

5 of 5  Loved the Madera - Excellent location, wonderful staff, A TripAdvisor Member, Huntington Beach, California, December 4, 2008

Our family of four stayed at Hotel Madera for a total of 5 nights (2 nights one week and 3 nights the following week) and it was wonderful. Small boutique hotel just minutes from the Dupont Circle Metro. The staff was incredibly helpful and recognized us when we came back for our 2nd stay and genuinely seemed happy to see us again. They even upgraded to a room with a balcony. The rooms were huge and clean and firm pillows were brought to us promptly when requested. We also enjoyed the evening happy hour. My children loved this hotel and were sad to leave. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

5 of 5  Nice friendly hotel in great location, A TripAdvisor Member, Portsmouth, England, November 27, 2008

We stayed four nights here over Halloween. It's a superb location being just off Dupont Circle. We chose the hotel to be near the main halloween events and these were within easy walking distance. The hotel itself was very clean. The staff were very friendly and professional and the complimentary wine was worth nipping back for! They also gave us maps and looked up places that we could eat. The room was huge with two comfortable beds and a balcony to walk out to.

The only drawback was the rubbish and over priced breakfast that is on offer at the adjoining restaurant. However, we discovered a great breakie place on connecticut ave called Luna which was 5 mins walk and was much cheaper and excellent. It does get quite busy there so be patient if there's a queue. It's worth it - especially if you're vegetarian like me.

Our stay in DC was part of a 2 week plus holiday and this was one of our favourite hotels. It's a little expensive but the old saying "you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" is definitely true.

Fabulous hotel. Couldn't fault it. Wonderful staff who couldn't be more helpful and welcoming. Good position. Good restaurant and bar. Fantastic rooms (stayed in a twin): VERY large, well equipped, comfy beds, nice decor, good toiletries, the most extensive minibar I have seen in a long time, quiet, kept meticulously clean.

Plus a free wine hour in the evening - what more could you want. Will definitely return.

5 of 5  Exceptional hospitality, wonderful location, reasonable rate for DC, A TripAdvisor Member, New Jersey, USA, September 26, 2008

We visited the Madera in August when we dropped our son off at school. We stayed a few extra days just to be local in case something came up but also to play tourist. I wanted something convenient to the Metro, walking distance to restaurants and stores and not far from campus, and selected the Madera based on reviews here.

We couldn't have been happier with our stay. All the staff were helpful and friendly, from the front desk to the car park to the restaurant wait staff. By the 2nd day we were greeted by name when we walked through the front door! And even though we didn't bring our dog it was nice to see that water bowl right inside the front door of the hotel. Whether it was help with restaurant recommendations or reservations, walking or metro directions, or asking if we were planning to come down for the wine reception, we were always accomodated. Our room was spacious and spotless and I loved the walk in shower. The hotel is in a quiet, mainly residential area, 2-3 blocks from the Metro and walking distance to restaurants and shopping.

I just can't say enough and will definitely return to the Madera.

Hello PDoug,

Thank you so much for your comments. I am certainly happy that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay. I will be certain to pass your comments about the staff to them directly. Thank you for staying and I hope you can return again soon.

5 of 5  It is GREAT, A TripAdvisor Member, Alabama, September 21, 2008

This is my first night of a five night stay and it is the best. From the moment I walked in this afternoon I have felt nothing but warm hospitality, excellent customer servivce, and a flawless room.

I have just sat for two hours on my balcony enjoying a bottle of wine and enjoying being outdoors watching the neighborhood from my 8th floor room. The room is large, elegantly decorated with top quality furnishings and linen, and is clean and quiet. The neighborhood is great, easy to access the Metro, and wonderful restaurant options within easy walking distance.

Christopher checked me in and was very helpful and pleasant. He gave me directions to places I wanted to go and was completely friendly and helpful. The rest of the staff I have encountered in the hallways have been professional, polite, and friendly.

Though I am here for work, I feel like I'm on a long awaited and needed vacation. I will be back. I've stayed at 3 other Kimpton Hotels in this city, and multiiple others across the country, but this is by far the best.

The only recommendation.....furniture on balcony would be nice. I had to roll my desk chair out on the balcony to enjoy it. This is minor......but a suggestion.

I'm looking forward to getting off work each day and getting back here.

Room 802 is prime.

5 of 5  Flawless stay at the Madera!, A TripAdvisor Member, PA, September 3, 2008

My roommate and I booked the Madera for labor day weekend and loved it! This is my third stay at a Kimpton Hotel, but my first at the Madera. I chose this hotel because of its location, reputation for hospitality, and because it is pet friendly.

We arrived and tried to find parking around the block, but didn't see anything. The man who checked us in offered us his parking space since he was getting off soon and we would be parked there all weekend. We were shocked to find such nice people! I don't think that they usually do this, but it was a really nice gesture!

Our dog is 60lbs., and frankly we were concerned about her staying in the hotel. We let the hotel know that she was coming, and they had a welcome sign in the lobby, and water and food bowls in the room. There was also a "doggie bed", but it was big enough for one of her toys. The bell hop appologized for this, but we didn't mind.

The hotel lobby wasn't much, but the room was spacious, clean and had new furnishings. We especially loved the aveda amenities and the mini bar full of upscale spoil-me treats. My friend LOVED the bed! It was very comfortable with down everything, and had amazing pillows! I think that I am going to buy some off the website...

It was my friend's birthday, and I mentioned this to the hotel before my arrival. They sent me a list of items to surprise her with (champagne, wine, roses, chocolates, beer, etc.), but I didn't get this email until I got back. To my surprise they had a nice bottle of wine, water and dried fruits waiting us in the room. The dog had a welcome biscuit and baggies too. All of this was complimentary! Last but not least, the hotel staff signed a birthday card for her and delivered it to the room. Nice touch!

Overall I really enjoyed my stay at the Madera. The staff really went out of their way to welcome us and the dog. We also enjoyed the complimentary starbucks in the morning, and wine in the evening. There was also milk and cookies in the evenings, but we never made it to that. My only complaint was that Dupont Circle was a little boring (but close to the metro), the lobby was small, and $35 a day for parking was a little high. However, they did have packages that included parking, or if you had a hybrid it's free. Despite my small complaints, I would definitely stay here or at any other Kimpton hotel since they staff is so inviting and the beds are fantastic.

Owner response, Kimpton Hotels Washington DC, September 11, 2008

Hello Calliopea,

Thank you for staying with us over Labor Day Weekend. I am glad that the front desk was so helpful to you during your stay. Since we are pet friendly it is only fitting that your dog accompanied you on your journey. We try to do our best to make pets feel at home at the hotel. I know all the staff will be pleased to hear what a wonderful stay you had, how they helped celebrate your friends birthday, and how pleasurable they were to your dog. Thank you so much and do come back again soon!

5 of 5  Best hotel in D.C., A TripAdvisor Member, Oklahoma, August 29, 2008

Hotel Madera is more than just a hotel. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure that your stay there is enjoyable. The hotel was always clean and welcoming, and the Firefly was a nice relaxing place for dinner. Located only a block or two from a metro, the location was perfect. There are plenty of restraunts to eat at within walking distance. I would personally suggest Bagels Etc. for breakfast. Our room was on the tenth floor and always quiet. We never had to wait for the elevator since one was always on the 10th floor and one on the 1st. The room was nice and big. The beds are so comfortable. We never had an issue with anything at this hotel. When my husband and I need a reasonably priced dinner on our last night in D.C we called down to the front desk and they printed us a list of nearby restraunts with price indicators. They also suggested a quaint and popular Mexican restraunt only a 10 minute walk away. We never made it to the coffee and wine, but the free milk and cookies were a nice touch after a taxing day of walking. The Madera and staff will only receive high regards and recomendations from my husband and me.

Owner response, Kimpton Hotels Washington DC, September 2, 2008

Hello Travelseeker08,

Thank you so much for your kind words. I know that the staff will be delighted to hear that they made your stay so enjoyable. I am glad that you were able to sample the cuisine of the Firefly as well as discovering some of your own favorites in the neighborhood. There is so much to enjoy in Dupont Circle.

Thank you again and I do hope that you will be able to return again soon! Have a wonderful day!

5 of 5  Great Visit to DC, A TripAdvisor Member, Raleigh, NC, June 16, 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Madera this past weekend while escaping to DC for our first trip without the kids in this millennium. We had a great stay at the Madera. It's location is very convenient to all of the happenings in Dupont Circle and not a bad walk to all of the major monuments and museums.

The service at the Madera was excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and very clean. We arrived early and had no problems checking in. Although I did call them the day before and mention that we may arrive before the 3pm check-in time. Check out was at noon, which was great because it gave us a chance to eat a later brunch and take out time packing. Since we didn't have to leave the area until 2ish, they held our bags for us after we checked out so that we could continue to explore the city as though we were still on vacation and not be stuck sitting in the lobby until we needed to depart.

On Saturday night, after dinner at a Thai restaurant recommended by the lobby clerk, we had a late-night snack and desert at the restaurant in the hotel (the Firefly). The cheese plate was one of the better ones we've had, and we have cheese plates just about everywhere one is offered. Our waitress, Ivy, was excellent. She was fun, efficient, helpful, and polite. Everything you could ask for in a waitress. We also ate Sunday brunch at the Firefly. And although the prices were rather high, the food and service were once again excellent.

The only negative we ran into during our stay was the cost of their parking. At $35 +tax ($39.40 total), we felt it was way over-priced. I'm not sure what their reason is for the excessive cost, but it wasn't explained to us in any acceptable manner. There did appear to be cheaper parking garages in the area, but we weren't aware of them when we checked in. On the bright side, the valet was great. He was friendly and accommodating and packed our bags into our car for us while we were out, and did an conscientious job of it as well.

All in all, we would definitely stay here again when we visit the city. Even if we brought our children.

Owner response, Kimpton Hotels Washington DC, June 25, 2008

Hello TravelItNC.

Thank you for your posting. We greatly appreciate your feedback. I am glad that you enjoyed your escape to DC at the Hotel Madera. It is indeed very close to Dupont Circle. In addition, I am glad that the staff made such a positive impression on you. and were so accommodating with your check out. Moreover I do apologize that parking in DC is expensive and unfortunately for hotels it is no cheaper either. There are self park garages around that will save you money but they are not 24 hours so you do need to plan a little. But that is always an option.

I do hope that you will be able to come back and join us soon!

Have a great day!

5 of 5  Convenient, Relaxing and Friendly, A TripAdvisor Member, Roanoke, VA, June 10, 2008

I visit DC regularly but this was my first stay at the Madera. Overall, I would give this hotel high marks. The staff was extremely friendly and the location right off of Dupont Circle was very convenient. The room showed a little bit of age but was nicely appointed and beautifully decorated in a very upscale fashion. Many of the rooms have balconies overlooking the street below. There is a restaurant (Firefly) in the hotel and although I didn't eat there, it seemed to be rather popular. Also, this is a pet friendly hotel, which I always consider to be a plus. The price I paid was OK, but if you can find good internet deals I would probably pick Hotel Palomar or Jury"s Washington first. If nothing was available for a reasonable price at either of those, then Hotel Madera would definitely be my next choice.

Owner response, Kimpton Hotels Washington DC, June 13, 2008

The VA_Cameo.

Thank you for your comments. I am glad that you were able to try out the Hotel Madera for the first time and that you ranked us highly. We appreciate it very much! I will let the staff know that they did a great job. I am glad that you enjoyed the hotel and would come back again. Of course everyone has their personal preferences but now perhaps we can consider ourselves one of yours.

Have a great day!

5 of 5  Wonderful stay with a large dog, A TripAdvisor Member, natickmatraveler, May 28, 2008

We only stayed for one night but wished we had more time. It was our first time staying in a hotel with our dog (she is a 2 yr. old lab) and we were nervous. Hotel Madrea was more than welcoming with a bowl of water waiting for the dog and a compliementary glass of wine for us!

Can not wait to go back for a longer stay!

Hello Natickmatraveler.

Thank you for your enthusiastic review of the Hotel Madera. I am glad that you and your dog felt welcomed. Kimpton places much emphasis on the various programs we have in place for our guests; one of which is our Pet Program. I do hope that you and your furry companion will be able to come back again soon.

5 of 5  Perfect Gem of a Hotel in the Heart of Dupont Circle, A TripAdvisor Member, NYC, May 10, 2008

After a long drive from New York City in a stressful rainstorm, we checked into the Madera Hotel and, suddenly, all of our worries immediately went away. The hotel staff is extremely nice and they appeared to be genuinly happy to see us. Our room, on the 6th floor was spacious, clean and pleasantly decorated. Our room featured two wonderful double beds, each with 2 soft feather pillows, 2 large square pillows and one funky zebra-print pillow. There was a regular-sized television, a CD player and an ipod docking station. There was a small area with a desk and couch and a lovely balcony overlooking picturesque Dupont Circle: a fantastic neighborhood with lots to see and do. To make up for the small bathroom, there was a medium-sized sink area with a mirror and a great makeup mirror.

This hotel was just perfect for our needs. Though it wasn't exactly cheap, it fit within our budget and was definitely worth every penny. To make things even more enjoyable, the hotel provides little perks like a bathrobe, wine glasses, free wifi, a cordless phone, a free wine hour in the evening and milk and cookies at night.

The hotel's location is centrally-located in the heart of Dupont Circle where we were within easy walking distance to great restaurants, shops and monuments. It is about a 15 minute walk to Georgetown and a quick Metro ride to the National Mall area.

I hightly recommend this hotel. It has a great vibe, a positive attitude and down-to-earth service. I will definitely stay here again.

To Whom It May Concern:

Thank you for your thoughts and comments about Hotel Madera. They are greatly appreciated. I am glad that you were able to enjoy your stay.

I am sorry you had to drive in on such a miserable day. It has been very wet in DC lately. However, it delights me to know that as soon as you stepped in the front door you were greater warmly and taken care of. In addition, I am glad that you were able to take part in some of the little extras that we at Kimpton like to think make you feel more at home. Plus the wine in the evening is a great way to meet other guests and the management team. And who doesn’t like a warm cookie and glass of milk at night!

Thank you for staying and I do hope that you are able to join us again! Thank you and have a nice day!

5 of 5  Another great weekend!, A TripAdvisor Member, Virginia, March 30, 2008

This is a fantastic place to stay for a weekend in DC! Check their website for special prices. This was our second stay at this hotel. One of the things I like about it is the non-standard room layout - certainly not a cookie-cutter hotel room! Our room on the 8th floor had a small foyer with a closet (and safe), with a large bedroom area (king size bed, very comfy), a desk with comfortable chair well set up for business use (lots of easy-to-get-to outlets, wi-fi and an ethernet connection), a chair and ottoman for relaxing, a toilet/shower/tub room, and a separate sink area. (The bathroom room is small - the size of the tub and commode, basically, so if you're one of these people that want a large spacious bathroom, this isn't your place). Special kudos for providing a magnifying mirror in the sink area and lighting that really lets you see what your makeup looks like! The room was spotlessly clean and quiet. The hotel offers Aveda amenities. Decor is a little funky - art deco / modern - but interesting decor is one of the hallmarks of the Kimpton chain. The hotel offers a 'happy hour' for wine from 5 to 6 pm daily, cookies and milk later in the evening in the lobby, and coffee and tea in the morning.

Hotel staff was friendly, professional and very helpful in recommending places to eat and providing directions.

4 of 5  Great location, friendly staff, rather noisy, A TripAdvisor Member, Chicago, June 2, 2009

Overall, I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Madera. I liked the DuPont Circle location. There are lots of restaurants in the area and the Metro is a few blocks away from the hotel. The bed was comfortable and the room stylish. The t.v. was large and the mini-bar had a good selection. The negatives were a very small bathroom, too few towels (only 2 bath towels and they were rather scratchy), and loud noise from the busy street outside/the bar/restaurant in the building. I asked for a high floor room, but was given a third floor room. Due to the noise, I was woken up many times during the night. I would suggest insisting on a high floor, unless you plan to be out late and/or don't mind noise. The free wine hour was a plus. The restaurant in the hotel is rather pricey, but has a nice atmosphere. While I did not bring a dog, I thought it was cool that they allow dogs to stay there.

Hello Purplevelvet,

Thank you for staying with us. I am glad that overall you enjoyed your stay. I too like the Dupont Circle location. There are indeed lots of restaurants and shops in the area and the metro is just a few blocks away. I apologize about the city noise disturbing your stay. It is not pleasant being woken up to sirens and car traffic.

Again thank you for staying and please come back again soon!

4 of 5  Great staff made all the difference!, A TripAdvisor Member, New York, May 26, 2009

My partner and I spent Memorial Day weekend at the Madera. It was his birthday, so I called ahead to arrange flowers in the room. Spoke with the wonderful Kelli who couldn't have been more helpful. Not only were the flowers perfect, but Kelli sent up a small bottle of wine! In fact, the entire staff was terrific, always helpful, always greeting us when we returned. Our room was very clean and comfortable. We did not have a balcony, but the weather was so muggy we wouldn't have wanted to go outside. The bathroom, I must say, is teeny tiny. If you like luxury bathrooms in hotels, stay elsewhere. Also the reception area seemed dark and drab. Since this is the first impression of the hotel, I'd say it could use some brightening up as it doesn't reflect the experience that awaits.

Hello Alan93,

4 of 5  Nice Hotel & Location, A TripAdvisor Member, Amsterdam, May 3, 2009

We really booked this hotel by reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. Now we´ve stayed in this hotel and it was a very nice stay. Staff was very friendly, sometimes too and our room was clean and bigger than we expected it would be. It even had a balcony, but that´s because we had a room along the New Hampshire Ave. Pets are welcome and although some people brought in a dog, we didn´t hear `animalsounds` at all.The restaurant was okay, but that´s it. The price for a breakfast is a little too much for what you get... we think.

The White House, dining and a little shopping is just minutes away and could easily be reached through walking. Probably we will return to this hotel when we will be visiting Washington DC again, whenever that will be.

Except for the central location two blocks off of Dupont Circle, which is excellent, this hotel is a complete dud. The service is abysmal. At check-in, the front desk agent was more interested in talking to her friends and petting someone's dog than doing her job. The next day, the front desk agent incorrectly informed me that the complimentary continental breakfast included in my room rate was served until 230pm on Saturday. Upon entering the attached restaurant, Firefly, the waiter brusquely told me that breakfast was no longer being served and either I was wrong or the front desk agent was wrong. Turns out the front desk agent was wrong. To her credit, she rectified the situation, but the breakfast, which she ended up actually serving me in the restaurant, was a complete joke--a greasy croissant with same sad=looking fruit, as well as an orange juice with ice cubes. The room was strangely laid out, with low, "popcorn" ceilings and an extremely small room housing the toilet and tub/shower combination--this space was so small it was actually difficult to sit on the toilet. The housekeepers only made the bed--they did not clean the vanity when making up the room, which makes me wonder how thorough they were with the rest of the room.

There is no gym at this hotel, and to work out, you must purchase a pass to a nearby LA Sports Club. I can't imagine any reason to stay here under any circumstance--there are many better properties in the area for similar amounts of money. I would avoid this hotel, unless you get it for free.
