Staff was very helpful. Great location. Great value. Stayed 3 night while attending convention in San Diego. Wanted to avoid super expensive hotels downtown, and still have a convenient yet relaxing locale. Couldn't have chosen better than the Holiday Inn Express La Jolla. Rooms were large, clean, nicely decorated, quiet, and comfortable. Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) associated with working on the staff was friendly and outgoing. I have never experienced a more pleasant and happy staff overall. Pool and Jacuzzi area were great, breakfast buffet more than adequate, and the morning run down through La Jolla and along the beach couldn't have been any better. Would return to this property in a heartbeat. This was our fifth or sixth stay at this property. Why do we keep returning? Location: It's nestled in a pleasantly quiet area that's less pretentious than much of La Jolla, and is just a short walk to a very nice beach. Charm: We also like that it's an older property that's been thoroughly renovated. Because of this, there's a lot of variety in room layout. This is not your standard cookie-cutter motel! Rooms are nicely decorated, clean, and the beds are super comfortable. Attentive staff: Obviously well managed, because from housekeepers to front desk agents to grounds crew to the sweet lady manning the breakfast buffet, all are focused on making the guest feel welcomed. This hotel really lived up to it's reputation here. We arrived at 10am and were able to check in right away. The room was very clean and looked out to the pool. The beds were very comfortable with tons of pillows, crisp white sheets and those super soft duvets. The microwave, fridge and coffee maker were spotless and all worked perfectly. The bathroom was large with a beautiful glass shower (no tub). There was both a table with chairs and ottoman and a desk and chair. There were several available outlets easily accesible (helpful when you are charging a cell phone / laptop / video game / camera). There was also a ceiling fan and our room had two large windows. The breakfast was exceptional - one day was scrambled eggs and bacon and the next was omelets and sausage patties. There was also biscuits and gravy, cinnamon rolls, bagels, yogurt, bananas, orange and apple juice, coffee and tea (both were actually good - not the watered down sludge you often get) and I am certain a few items I am missing. The pool was cleaned and maintained well. The chair cushions are taken in each night and put back in the morning - they were clean and comfortable - probably about 6 inches thick so it was nice to lounge around reading or just drying off. Service was attentive. We had a package delivered and they called the room and offered to deliver it. When we had issues with the T.V. (3 times - there was something wrong with the box) they sent someone right away (the third time they replaced the box). The hotel is convenient to the beach and shores. And there is a nice Mexican restaurant right across the street. I would recommend staying here whether you are looking to relax, do business or need a home base to travel to the different tourist attractions around San Diego. I would recommend having a car as there did not appear to be any public transportation in the area. We stayed for one night at the Holiday Inn Express in La Jolla. It was a very nice room, neat, clean, updated. Nice swimming pool, good breakfast. Conveniently located about 5 minutes from the La Jolla shopping area. Excellent way to enjoy the expensive La Jolla surroundings at a very fair price! We stayed here about a year ago and had a great experience. This time we shopped around and again found this hotel to be the best option for our needs. The location is on the south end of La Jolla, on a busy street (main drag) on the edge of business services. While it's a bit off the beaten path, it's still close enough to all the activities of the La Jolla Village area (shopping, beaches, dining, etc.) It's also very close to some nice neighborhood parks and fabulous beach views. There's a great new cafe across the street (WindanSea Cafe) and a decent Chinese restaurant (Mandarin Inn). We stayed in a suite (room 219) that overlooked the pool from the bedroom area and interior courtyard from the sitting area. Oddly enough, this is the same room we were in last year. While noise carries from the pool, we didn't experience any of the street noise other reviewers have mentioned. Definitely worth asking for a quiet location. The suite has a nice kitchenette area w/sink, refrigerator & microwave and new granite countertops. The sitting area and bedroom are quite small but adequate. The bedroom could have used a ceiling fan, but the A/C unit in the sitting area worked great for the whole place. The queen bed needs a new mattress - this is a new development since last year. The bathroom is shower only - a strange setup w/ a half-glass wall, no shower curtain and an oddly sloped shower floor. No way to avoid flooding the floor during showers. Shower water pressure was not great; probably due to older construction. Parking is ample although spaces are narrow. There is also an overflow gravel lot adjacent to the hotel. We parked there without problem. We like this Holiday Inn Express because it's not another cookie- cutter hotel, but all the amenities of the chain are present. The renovations appear to be complete and the property seems to be well- maintained. Maintenance workers were sanding and re-varnishing the wooden outdoor furniture while we were there. We love the La Jolla area and for our needs, this property fits the bill. We will definitely be back. I've never felt the need to write one of these reviews before, but I can't leave this one unwritten. Not much of one to travel by myself, I ventured out on a trip to CA with my young son and stayed at this hotel for 4 days, 3 nights. Very close to the beach. Lovely place. We felt safe, snug, and rested. The best part, though, didn't come until after I arrived back home. There was an issue with the charge of the room; and although this issue was not the fault of the hotel, when I called to ask the hotel manager to help clear up the issue, she did not hesitate to act. She couldn't have been more pleasing and helpful, resolving the problem right away. How wonderful is that? I give 5 stars and a huge recommendation for La Jolla's Holiday Inn Express. This place was a real surprise. Much better than the other HIE's we have stopped at. The accommodation was like a one bed flat. Very clean and comfortable. The staff were very helpful, even providing some free bottles of water when we found the vending machine was empty. The location is ideal for people touring around the area who prefer to be away from the noise of the city. The pool area is very pleasant and the lounger’s great for a relaxing break after a morning of shopping or touring. Breakfast, available from 6am to 10am, is the normal HIE continental style with the bonus of being able to sit outside by the pool. We stayed at this hotel in March of 2007 for a little getaway. We were there 4 nights and were really impressed with it. We used two night of Priority Club points and paid for 2; about $140, which was great for being so close to the La Jolla village. You can tell the rooms and property have been updated not too long ago and the updates were done VERY nicely. The property really has an upscale boutique hotel feel. We had a room around the pool area in a one-level U-shape setting. The rooms inside are gorgeous; they have granite countertops, nice carpeting & paint colors, attractive, soft bedding (nice pattern on plush duvets), classy wood blinds plus really nice darkout fabric blinds. The bathroom area is VERY small; just a small vanity (although it is upscale) and then a separate section with a door with a toilet and shower squeezed into the same space. The shower has floor to ceiling glass, so it's less claustrophobic. NO shelves or anything in that part of the bathroom, and just the small little vanity, so not much place to put things. There was a wall between the vanity area and a little area with a mini fridge on the bottom and a microwave on the top. There is a nice space for a suitcase right when you walk in the door and a pretty large closet with doors. We had a large TV in an airmore w/ drawers for clothes and also a nice desk with lamp, phone, and free internet access. Even though the room was small, they managed to fit all that in plus two double beds with a nightstand in between and a small cafe table with 2 chairs in front of the window. I would think that if any of the rooms had just a queen or king bed, it would feel a little bigger. The community room and the free breakfast were on par for the other Holiday Inn Express' and the front desk staff were very nice and helpful. The pool is small but nicely kept and they have a nice hot tub in the same area. The pool area is really cute; very "California" with birds of paradise flowers, bouganvilla, cacti, etc. There is a nice stone surround to the whole pool area as well as a nicely-done iron fence and nice teak wood tables and chairs with market umbrellas. We found that they often were out of towels out at the pool but would quickly replenish them if you called or asked. The atmosphere was really nice; we met several nice groups of people in the hot tub each day after a long day of walking all over La Jolla. There were some Spring Breakers there; all were very nice, but some made a lot of noise one night but the front desk dealt with it right away with one phone call. We are walkers and absolutely LOVED stayng at this property. It is about a mile from the main area of La Jolla village and is only 2 blocks from one of the beaches. We would walk each day through the beautiful neighborhoods and admire the incredible houses with their great architecture and incredible landscaping and flowers. We only had about one and a half days of sun while we were there (fog the rest of the time), but we didn't even mind because it was so beautiful and nice. The village is really a fun and nice place; you might think it would be very pretentious, but it is in fact very laid-back and welcoming. We ate at a great restaurant in the village (can't remember name), across the street from Ralph's supermarket, red awning. The owner goes around and personally makes sure everyone is enjoying their meal. Reminded us of the great people like that we have back home in Denver. Food choices in La Jolla were awesome; lots of fresh, California type food plus some great middle eastern, greek, and Mexican. We tried the Mexican across the street from the hotel the last night and it was FAN-tastic!!! SO good!!! Great, homey little atmosphere, too. We recommend walking the trail from where the caves entrance is, along the high heels above the water. Just beautiful. There is a Comedy Stop location in the village and we were able to see Pauly Shore there one night, which was a blast. There are also several nice sports and other bars in the village. Everything you need is really right there. We had been to La Jolla before; the area more up by I-5 with the shopping centers and mall up there. This time, we didn't even feel the need to go to the other areas because there was so much to see and do in the village. Pleasant surprise. The hotel is not that modern looking from the street, it actually looks a little run down. But don't let first impressions ruin your stay. The rooms were very clean and modernized. The staff was very nice and helpful. At first we were given a room that was way to small for our family of five. The front desk clerk, upon inquiry, gave us a room that suit us better and it had a fridge and microwave that was great for traveling with children who required milk in the middle of the night. The bathrooms were very up to date and roomy. We stayed with our three children and had no complaints. The continental breakfast was ok...just enough to get us by for the morning. The beds were extremely comfortable and room temperature was just right. We enjoyed our stay. This looks like one of those very old "motor hotels", stucco style, that has been totally renovated. They did a great job. The rooms and bathrooms are nice (but quite small) and the grounds are landscaped beautifully, especially around the pool area. We stayed in a downstairs room by the pool and jacuzzi. That was very nice, quiet and we could use the jacuzzi late and no one ran us off. They have a half glass panel for the shower door. Since the other half is open to the bathroom, the water gets the bathroom fairly wet when you shower. What a surprise to find such a clean room with wonderful decorator touches for such a bargain price! Big glass shower, new tile throughout, new granite countertops. Our unit even had an efficiency kitchen with granite, microwave, small fridge. Pull out sofa and two double beds. Fan had palm frond blades, night table was cast concrete with sea glass embedded in it. Tons of decorator touches. The bathroom did need a couple of hooks to hang a towel or clothes. Free breakfast including choices of pastries, yogurt, fresh fruit, juices, oatmeal, toast, coffee, tea, etc. Quiet little pool and just a short walk to a fantastic beach. Great Su Casa restaurant across the street and pretty good Chinese restaurant next door...a little cafe is opening soon across from that too. Short ride to downtown and plenty of shopping, restaurants. Everyone was happy from teens to adults. Had personable, friendly staff from front desk to cleaning staff - FANTASTIC. Stayed in plenty of luxury hotels and didn't get the value or service that we did here. Didn't want to leave. Very nice and clean hotel close to the Wind n'Surf beach. Rooms were recently remodeled. Very nice decor and comfortable beds. Our rooms was spacious, clean and directly located at the pool. The poolside was very nice with a little garden around it and wooden chairs and tables to sit down and relax. The staff was friendly and the location was good (by car about 5min to La Jolla center, 15min to Mission Bay and 20min to Downtown San Diego). Good and large continental breakfast. Complimentary parking directly at the hotel. Try to get a room at the pool or at least not facing the La Jolla Blvd in front of the hotel as this might be a little noisy. I would definitely stay there again! If you are looking for a bargain priced hotel in La Jolla, this is the place to stay. Inside the room, I thought I was in a Marriott. High end bedding, super comfortable beds, great window coverings that kept the sun out in the morning and spotless! A continental breakfast is included in the price. Ask to stay on the pool for the front street is noisy. I was here on business and thought I was in a cottage at the beach. The ocean is one block away. We watched the sunset in the evening! They have my business from now on! Great little hotel for the price. We went during high season and payed $180 for a Saturday night, which is reasonable for the La Jolla/San Diego beach area. The room was clean, a decent size, and fairly new looking. My only complaints would be that the Hot and Cold water labels in the shower were backwards and that there were no towel racks near the shower. Other than that I highly recommend this Holiday Inn. I stayed at above hotel last week over Memorial Day weekend. It is very nice and had been renovated with new tile, shower enclosures and carpet and furniture appeared to be real new. There was a small kitchen with microwave, refrig. and a small table. The breakfast bar was typical hotel breakfast, but all clean, and desirable. The location was only about a mile into downtown LaJolla. I would stay here again, we only had a queen bed, and I think that is all they have. Check it out if you want a king....... We somehow ended up with a junior suite- twice!, it was excellent, the continental breakfast was pretty good too... this place is a good deal in a great location. Request the junior suit- it's at the cost of a standard!! Had a 5 day convention in downtown San Diego but wanted to stay in a place that has easy access to the beach. Normally I'm not a big fan of Holiday Inn but this place is an exception. The room (w/ fridge) was surprisingly nice. Clean and pleasing decor. Reception when I checked in at 9P.M. and whenever I had questions in the A.M. was met w/ plenty of smiles and excellent results. The beach is just across the street and a 5min. walk is spectacular. Lots of great surf crashing up on the rocks & sand. This is also "The Spot" to come and watch the sunset. Tons of people & laughter. Wooden benches line the view, so bring a book and enjoy an early morning here. Breakfast is the standard fare. Fresh bananas & yougurt. Stale english muffins (when will "they" (corporations) learn!?), less than fresh juice; Bland coffee, etc... Kids will be fine if that is your goal. The woman running the breakfast bar was friendly & fast. Google "breakfast places" for a much better experience. Sitting out by the pool for an hour in the morning was a great way to gear up for the day. FYI: Parking directly at the convention center was only $8 per day. I'll be back... This is the second time we have stayed at this Hotel the Rooms are well laid out Clean and roomy. The Staff are very helpfull free internet access and good laundry facilities.Great location. Poolside furniture recently upgraded. Good family Hotel We just returned from a week's stay at the Holiday Inn Express in La Jolla with our two kids ages 11 and 9. We very much enjoyed our time at the hotel. Good value for the area. The room was very clean and we found the entire staff to be attentive and friendly. We really enjoyed the pool and hot tub after a day at the beach, as well as after dinner each evening (pool open til 10 pm). Pool towels were provided. Breakfast was convenient with enough variety to please everyone. We ate outside on the garden patio each morning. Good Mexican restaurant across street. Windansea beach is within walking distance. It's a beautiful beach with some great tidal pooling areas (best at low tide). Not the best swimming beach for our children. Tide a bit rough. We drove a bit to La Jolla Shores beach. Hotel a little off beaten track, but we didn't mind driving around and discovering area. So beautiful. There's so much to see and do. Would definitely stay at hotel again. My husband, 12 year daughter and I stayed 7 nights June 21-28, 2008. Had suite on 3rd floor of main building. Yes, there is an elevator. Suite was very roomy and clean. Marble counter tops in kitchen and bathroom. Lovely ceramic floor tiles in kitchen and bathroom. Window air conditioner unit in bedroom, two T.V.'s. There was only one bathroom (no tub) just shower. There is no fan in the bathroom so it got very foggy. Had to leave window open. It was difficult for the 3 of us to get ready in the morning. View from 3rd floor was amazing. You really can see the ocean. With the ocean (Wind n Sea Beach) so close we never did use the pool. Free breakfasts were great. They alternated between scrambled eggs/bacon and egg/ cheese omlets along with fresh fruit, pastry, etc. Husband's favorite was the free wireless internet in the room. Only real problem we had was the 2nd morning some of our make-up was missing from our bathroom. We want to believe that perhaps the maid accidentally got make-up wrapped up in towel and it got disposed of. Front desk clerk, Elizabeth, didn't handle it very good. She basically called me a liar because the maid said she never saw any make-up in the bathroom. If you plan on seeing alot of attractions we suggest getting the San Diego Go Card. We saved hundreds of dollars on admissions and merchandise. There is a great little shop called La Jolla Cove Gift Shop by La Jolla Cove. Prices were 1/2 that of other places. We'll be back. We loved San Diego and especially LaJolla. I just returned from a 6 day trip to La Jolla and had the pleasure of spending the nights at this Holiday Inn Express. The property is a little bit of a drive from the village of LaJolla but will worth the trade of value vs a few minutes of driving. The room was clean and fresh. The pool area and hot tub were also clean and inviting. Breakfast was good, fresh and coffee hot. You can enjoy it in the large, clean breakfast area or at tables just outside of the area. The staff was very pleasant and ready to please. Amy, the night manager, always had a kind word and was anxious to answer questions of directions and places to eat. This is a fine place to stay. They have done a marvelous job refurbishing the interior spaces of this old hotel. However, the old main building still looks old! We found the rooms very noisy at night - despite requesting a room away from the very busy street. People seemed to be going in and out of their rooms and banging doors all the time. A family must have been above us because we could hear loud foot steps all the time. It was disruptive. The place to be in this hotel is not the main building but the courtyard space. That area has some charm to it. They have a very nice breakfast area with spaces to sit indoor and outdoor. I was impressed by how clean the rooms were. The plus was being so close to the beach and to just be able to walk there. I would go to this hotel again but ask for the courtyard section. I just returned from a 3 night stay at the Holiday Inn Express and was quite happy with my stay. The motel is an older property about 1 mile south of the main downtown area of La Jolla. It has been renovated with a contemporary beach theme, new cherry furniture, plantation shutters, partial glass shower partitions, and ceramic tiles. Being older and probably added onto over the years, the motel has a few quirks. The rooms are scattered around a couple of courtyards, one with the pool, in one, two or three story buildings. The parking lot was tight when filled, even with a small car. Your room location and type may affect your enjoyment as some rooms are right on the edge of the pool or near a narrow passage or face the road or parking lot. Mine was on the second floor (no elevator) above the breakfast room. The outside door opened to the bedroom, rather than the living room, which was a bit odd. The living room with a sofa sleeper faced the pool courtyard, but lacked a ceiling light, so it was pretty dark. It did have a small kitchen with fridge and microwave, which was nice. The bathroom sink was tiny and in the hallway between the two rooms. The glass partition didn't entirely prevent water from partially soaking the bathroom floor. There was also a small depression in the hall floor that was covered by the new carpeting, almost like an pipe run that was abandoned when the hotel was renovated. And I could hear some occasional minor noise from the traffic or other patrons. But the room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, the pool was warm and clean, the landscaping was pretty, the staff was friendly, and the free breakfast was good and varied a bit with the hot main offerings every day. It is not a new hotel and you should know this if you book there, although it has been recently and attractively renovated. But the property is charming and gives off a neat Southern California vibe. Good location for visiting the ritzy stores and restaurants of La Jolla, the beach and surfing communities and Mission Bay to the south, and Torrey Pines State Reserve to the north (which is really beautiful for hiking and strolling the sandstone cliffs along the beach). I have stayed here two times and both times I have been very satisfied. I asked for a quiet room both times and I received one. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The breakfast has been upgraded to now include eggs and bacon or sausage. The pool and hot tub area is very nice and I never found it to be overcrowed even when I stayed over a holiday weekend. The rates I have paid here I felt were very good for staying in La Jolla. There is a good Mexican restaurant across the street and also a nice small Italian cafe for lunch. Holiday Inn corporation bought this old bungalow type motel in La Jolla and jazzed it up. We loved it. The rooms are a little small, but very nice amenities and decor. The shower was quite large for such a small room. The included breakfast was very nice with fresh fruits, cereals, waffles, etc. So many times the breakfast is really awful. Not the case here. The hotel has a very nice pool and hot tub. Also, there are several other sitting areas. We used them to have our own happy hour. The location is great because, of course, La Jolla is at the high end of housing costs in the San Diego area. We had originally thought we would stay in the "Hotel Circle" area (I think that is what it is called), but that location apparently has more crime and is noisy due to freeway traffic. We were lucky enough to be able to get into the Crabcatcher in La Jolla for dinner on a Sat. night. The food was excellent and what a location on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Very nice. As for getting into San Diego, it was a snap. Freeways are close by, but not within hearing distance. Price was about the same as staying in the Hotel Circle area. Everything in SD is expensive, so be prepared. It is also a very busy destination, so book early. Stay here if you can. My girlfriend and I stayed at this property from Oct. 11th through the 14th. If you like a quiet atmosphere with a beach within walking distance, you should be pleasantly surprised. The hotel also had a small, but nice pool area. Spend a few hours one afternoon sunning and swimming with little noise or disturbances. The hotel staff was pleasant and very helpful. I had a package delivered to the hotel through the mail, which they contacted me as soon as it arrived! For a little more action...mission and pacific beaches are within a 5 minute drive. Great boardwalk to walk or bike...you can rent bikes at several locations on mission blvd or garnett. Several nice restaurants with cool ocean and boardwalk views (ex. cane's & green flash). Great californian style mexican food (ex. gringo's). Overall, this hotel is a great place to stay for the price, while staying in a beautiful part of San Diego (La Jolla). Just remember in October, average temps are in the mid 70's, so it usually gets cool in the evening! Will definetely stay here again on our next stay in San Diego! This holiday inn is clean and decent. It has a nice pool area and they serve a nice breakfast every morning. It is very close to a beautiful beach you can walk to from the hotel. It was quiet at night and the hotel staff seemed very responsive and nice. I stayed here b/c the manager here is also in charge of the Pacific Shores which I hated, and so the manager offered me a discounted rate here. Service at this hotel was only so-so for the most part in my book. The person who checked me in was a little gamey about the price, but I stuck to what the manager offered me (though I shouldn't have to do this at all). Other people who worked there seemed pretty nice. Many just seemed kind of apathetic. Employees aside, my room was great. I even had a slight view of the ocean from it. No tub in the bathroom and open glass, large shower was interesting and new for me. I had a big room with 2 beds and it had a little kitchen with fridge, microwave, utensils etc. It was clean, well-appointed and the bed was really comfortable. The airconditioner cancelled out the street noise. It was too cold outside for me to try the pool and hot tub, but they looked nice. This isn't the place if you're looking to be able to walk to stores and nightlife. There's a 7-11 nearby, but that's about it. Stores and more pedestrian-friendly areas require a short drive. I rather liked that about my stay here - There was an obvious absence of loud, drunk, annoying pigs. I just wanted a clean, private and quiet place to sleep & go about my business and for that, this served me well. You can also walk to the wind & sea beach from the inn. For a sat nght in july, hotels in la jolla were outrageously expensive. So I booked this little gem of a hotel using priority club points. At the time of booking I asked for a quiet room away from traffic noise. I was not disappointed. My room was on the second floor overlooking the courtyard and pool. I didn't hear a peep of noise, and I am very, very picky about this. The room was actually a little suite, not luxury by any means, but clean, very comfortable bed (about the standard of a hilton), nice linens, good air conditioning and ceiling fans. There was an adequate continental breakfast. The pool was heated and quiet for an evening swim. What I liked most was the quiet, Spanish feel of the place--la jolla in the 50'ies feel, with obvious remodeling. On check out, I wanted to pay for a call I had made from my room when I had misplaced my cell phone. The desk clerk, Juan, gave me a nice smile and said it was "on the house." Altogether a very nice experience and I'd go back in a heartbeat., though I usually stay in more upscale hotels like Westins and Hiltons. This Holiday Inn Express was very nice inside, recently remodeled and updated (2007). Very clean with an excellent, friendly staff. We had a couple of issues with our room when we checked in, however they were all rectified very quickly without any hassles. The management was excellent to deal with. Free continental breakfast was served daily. Free Parking too! The only draw back was that it is on a boulevard. A little noisy when going to bed - we remedied that by running the A/C or fan each night in our room. That drowned out the street noise (which wasn't real bad over night - mostly late evening & early morning). Request a room away from the street - that will help. Curb appeal could be enhanced as well. Pool & spa were nice too. Close to all beaches and Sea World. Nice & quiet atmosphere for a family (we were there Monday-Thursday). As with other reviews, this was a surprise at a very reasonable price. The only negative point was the noise of the rooms facing the road. Initially we were given room 365, which was noisy so we moved to 112. This was a nice quite room , but with two people and luggage, was a bit tight. We then moved to room 127, which was great (even though the beds were a bit soft for our liking). The staff were also very pleasant and were happy to accommodate us. Nice pool and hot tub. and La Jolla was lovely. We wish we had stayed for longer. This hotel is a bargain, especially when compared with others in the San Diego area. I am very picky when it comes to hotels. This Holiday Inn exceeded my expectations. It is not the motel you may remember from trips past! The room was renovated recently, and everything from the bed linens to the bathroom toiletries has been upgraded. The marble bathroom had a walk-in shower with a great showerhead and plenty of towels. The bed was comfortable, and there were four pillows, two firm and two soft (embroidered on the pillowcases). My room was on the small side, with just one queen bed, but there was an armoire, an arm chair, a nightstand and a mini fridge with a coffee maker in the room. The closet space was between the bedroom and bath and had an iron and ironing board. Instead of curtains, the windows had wooden shutters which were better at maintaining privacy and sound insulation. Parking is free, which is a big plus. The included breakfast is also great. The lounge is across from the outdoor pool, and you have the option to eat inside or out by the pool. There is coffee, hot cinnamon rolls, toast, cereal, yogurt, juice---more than enough--and though it was busy, there were staff constantly re-stocking everything. Visitors should note that this is not directly on the beach, nor right in downtown La Jolla. It is a 5-minute walk to Wind'NSea beach. Like every place in Southern California, you need a car to properly get around. My only advice would be to avoid a first-floor room. Mine faced the parking area and I heard people coming/going. Rooms at the front face a four-lane street with traffic moving pretty fast. The staff was very nice. I was allowed to check in late and leave an hour late with no problem. I would definitely stay here again! We stayed six nights in March and were very satisfied with the hotel. The room we had consisted of a bedroom, and a livingroom with a chair, sofa, and table that seated two. It also had a fridge and microwave. The liveing room had 4 windows that opened to allow the great breeze in. The bedroom also had four windows. The place had just been remodeled and was in great shape. The pool area was landscaped nicely and had plenty of tables with umbrellas. There is also a landscaped couryard with tables. The cost during the week was $125. You are one long block from the Wnd and sea beach for sunsets and a mile or so to La Jolla village. We would go back to this place in a minute. Holiday Inn Express La Jolla is a comfortable place and a very good value. I have not experienced any other lodging in La Jolla, but I would hazard a guess that it would be difficult or impossible to find other La Jolla lodging of this quality at this rate. It is obvious some serious $$ and effort have been recently put into updating and upgrading the facilities at this hotel. My room was nicely outfitted, with a contemporary ambiance I would normally expect at a mid-range boutique hotel. Facilities were clean, attractive, and convenient. Front desk staff were always pleasant and helpful (even when my office sent me a 40-page fax!) The continental breakfast was more generous than the norm. I did not use the pool and spa, but they looked nice. My beefs are very minor. My laptop could not detect their wireless internet, but that may have been "operator error" (i.e., me). I noticed a fair amount of street/foot traffic noise penetrating my room from the exterior, but did not notice any noise from occupied adjacent rooms. (Note: I am rather sensitive to noise levels.) In summary, I would definitely stay here again. Nice job, HIE! (Warning - People drive like fruitcakes in La Jolla.) We stayed here during the Davis Cup matches. I frequently stay at Holiday Inns so I know what to expect. I was not disappointed, although the room had its quirks. The decor very nice. Everything looked brand new. We had a queen suite which had a sofa sleeper and kitchen with small refigerator, microwave, and sink. Very handy if your staying for awhile. The bathroom has a small sink with very little space to spread stuff out. The shower was one of the nicest and comparable to very fancy hotels. Our room was quiet and we slept great. The pool is really close and heated. The quirks: bathroom counter too small, the jacuzzi was not hot enough, trash can too small, the shower kept flooding the bathroom floor and parking lot too small. Also, the area with the sofa was in an odd part of the room and was never used. It would have been nice for us to sit on the sofa in front of the TV instead of the single seat that was there. We managed to move the furniture around to work for us. The lack of space and wasted space in such a large bathroom was frustrating. This room could use a few more practical touches that you see in other hotels. On the other hand, this room felt more like a resort-type room than your typical hotel room so we ended up having a great and relaxing time. Check-out the awesome Mexican restaurant across the street and stroll down to the beach for the sunset. I was worried after seeing the other reviews. Obviously the hotel has done extensive renovations this year. I have to say that my room was beautifully decorated (see my attached photos). There was a small kitchen with a table, countertop, sink, microwave, and cabinets. Strangely there was also a set of metal pots & pans, but no stove or hot plate. Instead of a closet there was a walk-in niche with an ironing board, a place to hang clothes, and a fairly large open space to store luggage. The bathroom was very nice except that there was no soap dish -- as noted by a previous reviewer. Also the toilet was too close to the wall. But these are minor complaints. Overall this room was much better than average. Breakfast was OK -- a typical "expanded continental" breakfast. I slept with the windows open on a nice, cool night. Unfortunately there was a fair amount of noise the next morning from neighbors and from the city buses, which start fairly early. But this hotel was the perfect place for a one-night stay after my business meeting. There are more upscale places to stay in La Jolla, but this hotel fit my purposes very well. I would stay here again under similar circumstances -- just don't expect a resort-type hotel like some of the other places in La Jolla. I stayed here for one evening and had difficulty sleeping as the rooms are too close to the main road. The room itself was rather nice, with full glass shower, which was surprising. You can hear people coming in and out of the couryard and rooms thru-out the night. My family stayed at this hotel for 3 nights over Thanksgiving. The room was a great size and included a small kitchen area. My husband and I travelled with our 3 children and we never felt cramped in our room which was clean and well furnished. Although the bathroom could have done with far more towel hanging spaces. My kids loved the pool which was well heated for the time of year. Breakfast was mainly pastries, cereal, bagels, toast and was plentiful. All the staff were extremely helpful, although one gentleman on the front desk gave us totally incorrect local restaurant information. Downtown La Jolla was within a 10 minute walking distance and the beach was a couple of minutes away. I traveled to this hotel with my husband, my 3 year old & my 4 month old. The only things I needed in a hotel were a pool, a fridge, and a two room suite so that my kids wouldn't wake each other up during the night. This is an old hotel with a decent renovation. The rooms were clean and looked nice especially for the class of hotel. The pool area was great and we enjoyed it alot. My issue with this hotel is that I booked it months in advance off there website. I even called to confirm that two rooms really meant two rooms. Here is what the room description is for the room type I booked. 2 ROOM SUITE 1 QUEEN BED NONSMOKING - 4 PERSON(S) MAX PER ROOM NEWLY RENOVATED ROOM INCLUDES SOFA SLEEPER WITH WIRELESS INTERNET FREE HBO AND EXTENDED CABLE KITCHEN MICROWAVE REFRIGERATOR WALK IN SHOWER We arrived late to a room that was very small, and did not have two rooms (was unable to take a picture of this room, but four steps from my husband covered it from end to end and we had to walk sideways between the bed & TV armoire). I went to the front desk and of course they don't have any rooms that night (not surprising on Labor Day weekend). The night manager says we will move you tomorrow. The next morning I spoke to the day manager (Juan Curtis) who informed me that the room I was in had the correct number of beds that the description said (a queen & sleeper sofa) so I was in the correct type of room for what I booked. After going around with him about what two rooms meant & that I had called to confirm the room type and the issue with my kids he agreed reluctantly (and after 15 minutes) to move me to a true two room suite. It took until 4:30 that afternoon for the room to be ready. The second room was delightful. It had plenty of room for me to walk my baby to sleep and for my son to play on the floor. Most importantly, it was two rooms. The rest of our stay was very nice. So be careful booking your room. Also, the AC did not cool both rooms so it was warm, but not unbearable. The breakfast fas standard buffet breakfast, nothing to get excited about. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express La Jolla for two weekday nights. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and were given a room above the breakfast lounge area. I had concerns about the noise from the breakfast crowd after reading reviews on tripadvisor, but we were assured by the manager that this would be a quiet room. The room itself had a bedroom with a queen bed immediately upon entering the door. To the left was a bathroom and sink and down a small hallway was a living room with a pullout sofa bed, a small table and chairs and a "kitchen" area with a microwave and dorm-size refrigerator. This was our largest room during our 8-night vacation and we enjoyed having the extra room for our family of five. There are two restaurants nearby -- Mexican and Chinese. We ate at the Mexican restaurant (Su Casa) and it was just decent. On the positive side, the free morning breakfast was quite adequate with tasty cinnamon rolls (they ran out on the second day when we arrived after 9 am), pastries, cereal, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruit and juices, milk and coffee. Being above the lounge area, we were never disturbed by the morning breakfast crowd. My children enjoyed the pool/jaccuzzi area. The grounds were very nice and they offered free parking. On the down side, the location of the hotel was just OK. It is not right in the downtown area of LaJolla and the area it is in looks a bit worn down. It took a while to get to the freeway and there can be a lot of traffic. (Coming from northeast Florida, we're not used to California traffic!) The bathroom was very modern with a glass half door (similar to European hotels I've stayed in), but it needed to be a few inches longer to keep the rest of the bathroom dry. The worst part of our experience at this hotel was our last morning, we were rudely awakened by our next door neighbors in Room 21 who were leaving to catch an early morning flight at 4:30 in the morning!!! We slept with our windows opened because the evening breezes were cool and dry. Not only did they allow their door to slam several times as they got their luggage and rolled it noisily down the stairs, but they spoke in loud voices as well ("I've got my carry-on!") With our bed just 3 feet from the door, it was like they were in the very same room. After checking the clock and realizing the time, I opened the door and asked them to keep it down -- which they finally did. In all my years of traveling, I can't recall a more rude moment. A clean and good value hotel but make sure you get a room facing the swimming pool rather than the busy La Jolla Boulevard. Situated a couple of miles from the resort centre, this is an oldish property which has been updated at some stage, though our suite was rather vdark and not as well-lit as it should have been.| Wooden window blinds may have been trendy once but they obscure much natural daylight. Pleasant breakfast lounge with outside tables too and a reasonable, free continental breakfast. Reception staff were helpful and friendly, as were all the staff on the property. We would probably not stay here again because, compared with the many excellent and modern Holiday Inn Expresses in Arizona and California we stayed in, this is not up to that standard. It has something of a holiday camp feel and we were bothered by a noisy group of smokers who sat outside our ground floor suite to all hours. Best place for them, of course, but not outside our room! This is a great hotel, nice room, great bed, nice swimming pool area, nice staff and very quiet at night. I would stay there again if it was located somewhere else. La Jolla is a quiet town with a pretty Ocean front. Strangely enough we rarely see the Ocean while in town. Many folks in this area are obvious multi-millionaires using cheap Mexican labors. There isn’t much to do there and the restaurants are overpriced. Don’t stay there if you don’t have a car because La Jolla is far from everything. $35-40 taxi drive from downtown/uptown.

This is an older motel that has rooms facing a courtyard with a nice pool. The rooms have been redecorated and the beds are good. We paid $166 with a AAA rate which favorably compared with other hotels in the area, although this one was not near the beach. What disappointed us was the way this motel measured out supplies in a skimpy manner. The pool was never stocked with towels; you had to ask for them and 4-5 were put out at a time. The breakfast area was unstaffed and poorly replenished. Again, they put out as little as possible to get by and a visit to the office was needed even to get hot water for tea. The parking area had inadequate space for the number of cars it was supposed to hold. Not recommended. reasonable location for the rate in this expensive area. but a couple of problems.our recently remodelled room over the breakfast room(i think there are four rooms over the b/fast room)has a bedroom so small that they can't get a tv in the room. not much good if you want to watch something different from your other half or if you want to watch tv to fall asleep too. but more annoying is the fact that the tv in the breakfast room is switched on at 7am and then the guest start coming in for breakfast. the problem is that the floor is all tiled and the chairs and tables all make a horrendous scraping noise when moved.so no long lies for light sleepers!!.so beware these rooms. The room was almost ok. There was a pieces of futrniture that was really old and dirty. Everything else was clean and nice, but this furniture just made the feeling that the entire room is dirty. Staff hardly spoke any English. Many employees did not speak any English at all. Breakfast was fine, may be even a little bit better than the usual continental style breakfast. I think that for the price I paid I should get much better hotel than it was. For the most part, our room was pretty clean, and it was sufficient for a two night stay where we weren't spending that much time in the room anyway. BUT, the morning after our first night's stay, on a Saturday morning no less, construction started not far from the room and just echoed madly throughout the hallways. It was really annoying and I couldn't get back to sleep. (Imagine someone taking a hammer and ripping/knocking wooden eaves off a building, a cracking, banging, crunching sound.) Plus, the doors slammed loudly, so we would hear whenever someone left their rooms. Additionally, for some reason, there was this faint odor of what could only be described as "Wet dog" or "dog urine" in our room. And I noticed some of our bathroom towels had slight yellow stains on them... Not very impressive. I've stayed in a Holiday Inn Express before in two different cities, and they were always great. Clean, spacious, not smelly, room carpets didn't have that mildewy motel room feeling... I was rather disappointed this HOliday Inn Express was so subpar. My daughter and I stayed at this property while we were moving her into an apartment near UCSD. The room they put us in when we arrived was extremely noisy. The window air conditioner kept me awake most of the night. At 6am I went to the front desk and asked for another room. I was given a key to a room on the third floor facing the street. It had not been cleaned so I returned to the desk and was given another key. This room was clean so we moved in. It too was loud. Since I had paid through Hotwire I was not able to leave without losing my money so we stayed for the duration. I would never stay there again. The location was awful if you need to be near UCSD. The air conditioners are all window units and they are loud!! It was a rather low class place but I only paid $90 a night. I could never recommend this place. Trip Advisor folks have never let me down... before now. Based on the reviews, I expected a nice-ish version of a cheap hotel. Here's what I got... Check-in guy was none too friendly, just gave us the key and didn't ask any questions. Yes, it was late but nobody else was around and he could have made an effort. No extra blanket, I could have used it. No place to set anything, anywhere in the room. No luggage stand. No table. The smallest sink/vanity I've ever seen, with nowhere else to set your bag of bathroom items. You have to put everything on the floor and work from there. The one-inch gap all around the door let every sound imaginable into our room while we were trying to sleep. I now know that the garbage trucks start around 6am, and the street in front of the hotel becomes quite busy around 6.30am. Next came the hotel staff, around 8:00, starting to do their work and yelling to one another in the hallways. Then I went to breakfast and the attendant wouldn't leave me alone. She was trying to be helpful but the 20 questions were very overwhelming - I couldn't make a move without her butting in. You want your bread? You want your juice? What are you looking for? SHEESH. When we checked out the next morning (2 days early) no questions were asked as to why we were leaving early or whether we enjoyed our stay. Had I paid $50/night, I wouldn't be so irked, but at $135/night I do expect much, much better than this. This hotel is just terrible and they don't get it how terrible they are. Extremely NOISY! My boyfriend and I are in our 20s and were given a room that was right above the front desk which is situated right along one of the largest and busiest roads in La Jolla. Lots of construction is being done everywhere in La Jolla so all day and night, you hear nothing but the roaring of large trucks and buses so that you can't even hear the person next to you talking! And that wasn't all! The front desk has a side door that is right below the room that keeps slamming every 5 minutes 24 hours a day as new hotel employees go in and out of work. Besides the loud noise when this door slams shut, you can find your room walls shaking and your brain rattling! It woke us both up dozens of times during the night and early morning. We requested to have another room in which the staff grudgingly gave to us. But if you thought that the noise level couldn't get any worse...you thought wrong. The new room they gave us is at a point on the first floor (Room 130) which is the closest room, about 5 feet, from the hot tub and rest of the pool area. Screaming children from multiple families will wake you up at 6:00am from a sleepless night to eat at the bland complimentary breakfast and jump in the pool where they stay all day. Their pale parents join them in the hot tub, flirting with each other's significant others in vomit-inducing behavior. Mind you, the beautiful Windansea beach is a mere 1 block away! Who stays this close to a beach only to stay at the hotel all day in a pee-filled pool?! Making matters even worse, all the doors next to ours, including ours, does not shut easily, requiring you to slam the door with much force so that it will shut completely. You can imagine what this may sound like. Hotel staff are unfriendly, lazy, and incompetent. Great location but a hotel for a flock of retards! This is not worth it even for a cheaper price.
