Great for family fun time | Read all reviews
The Edgewater Resort and Waterpark hotel is a great stay for families with kids and teens. Most of the guests seemed to be family people. The waterpark is connected to the hotel and it's free for hotel guests. The hotel itself is a bit used, maby like to what I've seen on sun beech hotels but it's absoulutely ok, still. Rooms are spacious and comfortable with refrigerators and tv's. Price of the room was very good, it included taxes and small breakfast. Of course it's hardly necessary to mention that Duluth is a very nice and interesting city to explore, and the view over Lake Superior is great.

My wife and I had been wanting to get away to Duluth for a day or two. We also wanted to take the kids to a waterpark. The Edge satisfied both wants. When we looked on the website, it said they were running a mid-week special of $89 per night with waterpark passes. Needless to say, we were on our way. The hotel is nice and clean. Check-in was easy and we had no trouble with parking or finding the place. It really is convenient to everything as it is just off the tunnel. The indoor park is great. It isn't the largest indoor park in the world, I am sure, but it was big enough for us. It has a single slide, a tube slide for singles and doubles, and a lazy river. It also has a basketball pool and a water-based "playground" for the kids. The water is very warm. Bath-like. Very, very nice. My kids loved the waterpark. At The Edge you get a LOT for your admission price. We got a room that included the park, which was enough for us. But they also have a blow-up moon bounce available outside for the kids. Free miniature golf is included. There is an outdoor pool and a small playground. In the evening they had marshmallows you could roast on the gas burner. The room came with two (or four I don't remember) free drinks in the lounge upstairs if that's your thing. In the morning, breakfast was included in the continental cafeteria upstairs. For us, this hotel was an unbelievable deal and we will definitely be back. The absolute ONLY negative I have about the hotel is that the waterpark is completely indoors. There are no windows in the park which surprised me as they should have a decent view of Lake Superior there. So you kind of lose track of time. It being totally indoors, you kind of waste what may be a nice day. The day we were there it was 45* and raining, so we were very happy to spend that day indoors having fun. The next day we checked out and it was 80* and sunny so we went to Gooseberry Falls. If we had been staying, we wouldn't have been using the waterpark during the day. On the few days that it is nice in Duluth, you just don't want to waste them indoors. For a winter getaway, The Edge will be at the top of my list. The kids would spend all day in there if they could and in the 7 hours we were in the waterpark during our little trip, never once did they say they wanted to go do something else. We will definitely be going back. Part of our "checkout package" they slid under the door were coupons for "any night $99" among other coupons. Great values for what you get. I have been staying at the Edgewater property for many years. I had stayed in the west building during the waterpark construction, and yes it need some help. So, when I called to make last minute reservations I was hoping for a room in the waterpark building. Unfortunately there wasn't. The staff person I talked to informed me that their Express (west) building had been completely updated. I figured I would give it a shot. I always liked staying at the Edgewater, and if the rooms across the street were freshly done, why not? I was also told I could check in at the Express building between 3 and 9PM. Boy was I happy about that! The main lobby looked full as I drived by to check in. My check in was fast, and the clerk was friendly. The entire building seemed to be brand new. The pool was wonderful, the sauna was the same good old sauna. The hot tub was not ready yet. As I walked through the building to my room I couldn't believe it was the same building. The breakfast there was excellent. They had waffles, yougurt, and all of the regular continental breakfast fixins. They also had a minimal lounge in the breakfast area. They didn't have as many options as across the street, but they had the essentials. All of the staff there were excellent. They did everything they could to make my stay great. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and I would recommend giving it a second chance to anyone who stayed there before the renovations. We love the Edge Waterpark! Great place for kids. Lot's of lifeguards. If you are an adult with no kids, this might not be the place for you! A few big slides, but mainly for kids I think. Be sure to get a room on the waterpark side of the "resort". The rooms in the Express part of the resort are terrible! The waterpark rooms are great. Very clean! Planned a late August weekend getaway to Duluth. Booking in July, I found all of Canal Park hotels booked to my disappointment. Last year we had been to Duluth, three hours from Twin Cites, staying near the mall, which was fine, but lacked that 'Get away' feeling you have when near the lake. Lake Superior is like an ocean, love watching the ships come in and go out and makes me feel like I'm a world away from everything especially the city. So my searches lead me to Edgewater Resort and Water and I decided to try it. The building was older looking with the water park in front, although you can't tell it's the water park because it doesn't have any windows. Then there are two wings from the lobby with a big parking lot. Check in was quick and easy, with directions to our room on a hotel map which we needed until we got the layout of the hotel. There is an elevator but we didn't have too much luggage so we walked up the few steps to the main elevator to go down to level two. The lobby is really on level three, the hotel is situated on a hill overlooking 35 and Lake Superior. We were in the building with plug in internet-the other building-4000 rooms are wireless. At check in we also got coins to use in the Sunset Lounge for two dollars off a drink and we some local coupons. Edgewater is on 24th and London, a couple miles north of Canal Park. The room was good: two queen beds, microwave, coffee maker, fridge, TV and the best feature for me was the walkout balcony with two chairs and a small table. I had my coffee here in the mornings. There is a window in the room which provides a good view of the lake. The window doesn’t open, but you can open the door to the balcony. Noise? If you have the door open you’ll hear the freeway noise from 35. The room had an adjoining room door. Maybe that’s why we could hear the loud teenage boys goofing around next door? The atmosphere is cheesy tropical, unless you go to the business section of the hotel, where the atmosphere is less over the top. This made the hotel ‘fun’ and geared to families with young kids- they could have their photos taken with TikiTina and Tiki Tom in the water Park. The hotel provides the option to have your hotel room face either the lake or the water park. I like the lake and thought it water park room might be too noisy. On request, we had one facing the lake. To get around the hotel, we recommend the stairs, as elevators are very slow. The water park is on level one. Breakfast is on level four. The water park opens from 8 AM to 10 PM. You’ll need your wristbands to get in- you get them for each guest at check in. They go until noon the next day, so we had bother our days were right away and at noon they change over. (I suppose since check out is at noon) Actually this was nice, you didn’t have to wait the next day in line, to get the wristbands like at other places I have been. The water is aimed to the children under ten years old with different areas for kids to climb and play. My teenager wasn’t impressed. The lazy river was enjoyable however it was too short. If you have been to other water parks, then this one might be a let down because a few times around the lazy river and you are done. The big bucket of water is great; I stood under it a few times with other adults and children enjoying it too. The hot tub was large and was for adults and children. There are chairs for those watching and trying to read a book. Outside I found the heated pool and out door hot tub, along with the mini-golf course, and Gazebo, with the fire pit. The hotel brings out the marshmallows for roasting at sunset. Across the street is a coffeehouse. You can use the bikes they have on a first come first served basis. I was going one morning when I saw the ped bridge across 35, but I slept late instead. Breakfast starts at 630 and goes until 10am, but at 8 when I went it was too busy and I mean busy with many kids and parents at each table. There is around breakfast room for the far wing, but maybe they used this one instead? I came back at 915 and it was better. Average food-cereal, toast, juice, bagels, yogurt, and coffee. Another day I brought a tray back to our room, it was easier and quieter. Overall it was a good relaxing place and I would go back there, because I liked the internet, breakfast, pool and Lakeview. My Family and I were there for a day of swimming with the Boy Scouts. I could not believe the way thay all took so great care of us all. everytime I look there was a life gaurd. Felt my kids were every safe. They had such a great time. We're looking into staying in the hotel overnight, and the Pizza was wonderful also. Thank -you all for makeing my day almost completely carefree. I will tell poeple about this place. After reading some of the reviews I decided to write my own... We stayed during the extremely busy "Tall ship" weekend and I found this hotel to be great for familes with children. Lots of activites for the kids that I didnt read on the website (crafts, outside movie, firepit w/ marshmallows, sailboat races, free use of bikes). The lifegaurds at the pool are very watchful. You can see fireworks from this hotel. We sat by the outdoor pool area and had a nice view. If you need to have them overhead then you need to be in canal park~we didn't want to deal with the crowds so this was a good option. The hotel was full, so breakfast was busy (to be expected), get there early enough and it shouldnt be a problem. As far as checkout goes, leave the cards in the room and go, just like it says in the hotel info book in your room, no lines, just go~ simply wonderful. It is an older hotel that has been remodeled, so its not perfect, its kind of quirky with the different levels. Remember it was not built all at once and its on a hill...and yes, parking could be an issue if you get there late. The kids (possibly the adults too) sure had fun and I'm sure we'll be back. A lakeview room is the only way to go, especially in Duluth where it might a crime not to have a lakeview. The room was clean, the bathroom was tiny (my only complaint), the staff friendly (you get what you give) and the view in Duluth is always Superior ! Heading back home to Thunder Bay from Minneapolis, a snow storm suggested to us to spend an night in Duluth with the kids. So, why not the Edgewater again? It was a Sunday night, in the beginning of November.... So you can imagine the entire place was pretty much empty. I think there were 2 other people in the swimming area! The first time we stayed, we had a queen suite facing the lake. The layout of the room was awkward with the bunk beds right underneath a heating duct. One of the kids smashed her head on it during the night.... The room itself was also fairly dirty. I did leave a comment card on the table, and to my surprised I heard back from the hotel not once, but twice. The first time was an apology for the untidy room with a small voucher in it. The second was from the parent company with a $50 voucher thanking them for bringing that safety hazzard to their attention. Whether or not it was fixed or not, is another question. This time we had a room close to the pool, which was clean and tidy - no issues. The waterpark itself was great - very quiet considering no one was in. I was a bit disappointed that the outside pool was closed for maintenance - it would have been nice to swim around in that heated pool while the snow fell. The breakfast was once again, quite good, especially considering it was free and the place was empty. I would definately stay here again, but I'd not stay here on a weekend that I thought would be very busy as it gets really crazy there. Despite all the negative reviews we booked a week-end at The Edge. As it turns out it was a lot of fun. The Waterpark was really cool for kids (big and small). The Pizza was worth ordering. Everything was clean. The rooms are fine with only minor problems. Yes check in can be an ordereal, but when 300 people check in all once, that is to be expected. Free breakfast (cant beat that) was crowded and noisy, (did I mention it was free?) but well organised. Bottom line: take the kids. They will love it. Ok, so the outside of the place is a little plain, but our room was very nice. At $200 a night, it was more than we normally pay, but our room comfortable slept six adults and 2 preschoolers and included waterpark passes, so overall it was a good deal. The room was clean with modern amenities. Beds were as comfortable as the Hilton I recently stayed at. 3 yr old was a little scared of "splashing bucket" in kiddie area but my 1 year old (celebrated her birthday their) had a ball/loved crawling around in the 8 inch deep zero entry pool and liked riding tube with me in the lazy river. My first water park experience. Better than I expected. My wife and 23-month-old enjoyed our stay here but I just wanted to post something for the parents of younger (4 and under, perhaps?) kids, as we felt that the water park really isn't a great place for some toddlers. I know that will elicit some "duhs" from the audience but we had taken our daughter to a water park in Alexandria, Minn., last year a few months after her first birthday and she had a great time, so we were kind of expecting a similar experience here. But the main toddler-friendly area in the WP has a few features which can scare/startle littler kids, one of which is a huge cauldron of water that fills steadily until it tips over and douses the whole area. It's a lot of fun for us old folks but our little gal and a few other kids were kind of freaked by it. Plus there is a water cannon thing nearby that is really strong and, again, scared/startled a few toddler types. That said, she did have fun in the circular pool thing and on the Lazy River. Overall the staff seems to be really well-trained. We had a few instances where they went out of their way to hold doors for us as we were leaving with loads of luggage, etc. And the hotel seems to be built solidly enough that soundproofing wasn't a problem. Though we did benefit from being the last room on one side of the hotel, so we had no one staying on one side of us. The continental breakfast was great. They smartly put a tub of yogurts right as you enter, in case you need to sit down quickly and get some food into a crabby. hungry tot right away! As a facility it's nothing special - kind of drab and functional, rather than resort-like, as one other reviewer noted. And it's not cheap. But overall, we had a good time! I was in Duluth for a conference and this was the only hotel I could book under the $150 range. I was really pleased with everything except the parking, which was awful. However, the room was nice, the waterpark fun, and the glee in little kids faces was a delight. It is definetly a family hotel and not for business travellers, but it's worth the money. We stayed at the Edgewater "The Edge" hotel/waterpark for the 4th of July, 2007. My children are ages 9 and 7 and what a blast for them. We had a beautiful view of Lake Superior and the Lift Bridge. We had the best seats for the fireworks that evening from our balcony. We didn't have to deal with crowds, traffic or bugs! They have a wonderful fireworks display and we could also see Superior, WI fireworks as well. We will definitely return for another family vacation. Only a couple of things that weren't the best. We had very dirty sheets on both beds. I called the front desk and they sent someone immediately up to change the entire bed(s). Comforter, blanket, sheets, pads and pillowcases. They also credited us $25 towards the room. I think 25% would have been more appropriate since we paid $170, but we were content. The road noise from 35 was a bit annoying as well, but eventually we kind of got used to it. Be sure to try Tiki Tina's pizza, it was delicious. We decided to stay here so that our kids could use the waterpark. This was the last stop of our vacation so decided to "spluge" a little on the hotel for the last couple nights. When we arrived there was a line of people waiting to check in, but it did move pretty quickly. They give you an armband for the waterpark when you get there and another for each day you are staying. The hotel is very nice, recently remodeled, across the highway from Lake Superior. There is a pedestrian ramp to get across and down to the lake shore. Our room was very clean, nicely set up and they have cool "goodies" (shampoos, soaps, etc). I think they should put some hooks in the bathrooms to hang wet suits on though, there was nowhere to put them after the kids swam. My kids were not really impressed with the water park, it is better suited for kids 10 and under and mine are young teens. They did enjoy the arcade though and also played mini golf once or twice (small home made course but not bad for free). No restuaurant on site but a small snack bar will serve pizza, hot dogs and soda and there is (I believe) a Marie Callendars across the parking lot. Breakfast was very nice with a larger selection than we expected and served in a nicely appointed lounge area with a view of the lake. The hotel also has a gift shop and an ATM machine in the lobby. They went out of their way to find my daughter and I directions to a theatre for a play we were going to see. Our room overlooked the water park which was a little disconcerting as it stayed lighted up until 10 p.m., at one point my husband and I were going to walk down to the lake only to realize it was already dark outside....we didnt realize how late it was with the lights on outside the window all the time! I would recommend spending the extra few dollars and getting the room with the lake view. All in all, this is a clean, nice and friendly place for a family to stay. I stayed here for one night just for a place to take a bath and sleep. The room looked a little dated but it was very clean and bed was comfortable. It was only $59 bucks during the week in early Nov. 2008. I found no holes in anything. The place was totally acceptable. It's right next to a raft of restaurants that you can walk to and they have a free shuttle that will take you downtown or to Canal Park. I wished I had brought my swim suit because the waterpark looked like a lot of fun. I can understand people being somewhat upset if they pay the high season weekend rate because no it's not a 5 star hotel but it certainly is not a "hobo hotel" either. Who even uses that word anymore these days? And it's pretty much standard for almost all hotels these days to ask for a credit card for incidentals. We stayed this past weekend and have stayed here before. This is just an average place but the small children in our party loved it. The water park is great for them as are the playground and mini golf. The arcade was fun. Not very many games but good enough for a bit of fun. The room was bare but the bed was comfortable. The lines at breakfast are long but it's free so we just deal with it. The staff at the desk were very efficient and kind. I have no complaints about them at all. But we did check in late in the day. Our room was clean but just old and out dated by today's standards. We would go back if the price is right. I know there have been some negative reviews on this site for this hotel, but we have been coming to this hotel off and on for over twenty years and have never had any problems. Some of the room rates do seem to generate higher expectations than what the hotel actually represents, but we have never been anything but satisfied with our stays here. Check-in at the Edgewater was pretty good. Our room was ready for occupancy and was the type of room we requested, two double beds. Friends who also checked in the same day were upgraded to pool-view rooms as well as rooms that had bunk-beds, which worked out good for them as they had small children. The upgrades were not requested and did not cost anything extra. Also at check-in, guests are given two "tokens" each, good for an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage in the lounge area of the hotel. This is also the same area where the free continental breakfast is served (bagesl, cereal, toast, juice, coffee, pastries). Like many residents of our area, we travel a few times a year to Duluth, Minnesota (a three-and-a-half to four hour drive) and while in the past have stayed at a few other properties, we often try to book into the Edgewater first for its familiarity and quick access to the interstate highway. We stayed for two nights on this trip, and were in Duluth for an inline skating event. Because this weekend is a "special event" weekend for the city of Duluth, many hotels often charge what we consider to be unreasonable rates and attempt to enforce a two-night minimum stayl. In previous years the Edgewater was one of these hotels... however this year, for some reason, the rate was extremely reasonable and some members of our group were actually in store for some surprises when they checked in. Our room contained a refrigerator, TV, wi-fi, microwave and two double beds. The room is kind of unique in its design in that the double beds are placed on either side of the bathroom, which is situation in the middle of the room (the back of the bathroom is on the same wall as the heads of the beds). This layout, while may seem strange, really works. It allows a semblance of privacy between the two sides of the room, and in my case, allowed the person in the other bed to rise and shine at the ungodly hour of 4:30 a.m. without much negative influence on me, sleeping until 7:30 a.m. My room was in the older part of the hotel, connected to the newer part of the hotel by a "sky walk"... which is really just a carpeted hallway. The carpeting in the room itself, the bed covering, the bathroom... none of these are top of the line, but then again, this is not a top line motel/hotel. The most important thing...everything worked just fine. There is an incredible pool area for children featuring many activities for young children, and two water slides which might interest teens as well as adults. There is also a whirlpool, one of the hottest I have been in in any hotel, it is a nice size and was great to sit in there with an ice cold beer. In the pool area there is a little snack bar which serves fries, burgers, hot dogs, pizza, soft drinks and beer and tables on a little patio area. There is a swimming pool outdoors, so definitley seasonal since this property is located in northern Minnesota, along with a miniature golf course. In the evenings, parking seems to be at a premium as all hotel dwellers come home to roost. So much so that many guests find themselves parking on the busy road directly in front of the hotel. Check-out was quick and efficient and there were no errors on our check-out statement. All in all, absoloutley nothing to complain about during our stay at this hotel. Our family of 4 stayed for two nights during the week. There is a summer special rate for $150 per night during the week. We had two queen beds and bunk beds. The room was spacious, but the balcony overlooking the waterpark was too hot to sit on since the heaters blow on it from above. Our children (ages 11 & 14) enjoyed the waterpark and some of the other children's activities like the marshmallows roast and mini golf. The line ups are terribly long. Check in took over 30 minutes; over 15 minutes just to pick up clubs for the mini golf; line ups for breakfast if you weren't there early. For check out, we just phoned the front desk to check out rather than wait in line again. Parking is a problem, especially in the evening. Overall, this is an OK place, not particularly clean, but acceptable. There are good activities for the kids, and the outdoor pool area is nice. Had to do business in Duluth this week. Thought would be a good time to bring kids with, so booked this hotel for them to enjoy the water park. They say the water park is 30,000 sq. feet. I dont think so. It is more like 10,000 sq. feet. My kids enjoyed it though. The upkeep on the hotel is fair. They have cobble'd fixes in the room, and you can tell this is an old facility that is updated. Definately geared for families, as there were a lot of families there on weekdays, and very chaotic and loud. Great steak place down the street, highly recommend it! Fun hotel / waterpark for the kids and for parents to relax and act like kids. If you have toddlers it might not be so relaxing with all that water everywhere but there were plenty of lifeguards on duty and they walked around their posts constantly. My kids are 4, 8 and 10 so it was perfect for them. Water park is not too big. I felt comfortable letting my older ones go down the slides and float the river while I tended to my 4 year old. Hotel hallways tended to have a musty smell. Probably from all the wet kids running around. Speaking of which, some parents just don't teach their kids not to yell in hotel hallways. Rooms were family friendly. We had a king bed on one side of room and 2 sets of bunk beds on the other side of room. Each side having their own tv. I wish they would have had a microwave though. The only thing I would not do again is have my room overlooking the waterpark. It stays open til 10pm with loud music and then opens again at 8 am with the same loud music. Plus, they keep the lights on in the waterpark and the curtains do not keep it out of the room. So it looked like morning all night. Needless to say none of us (except the kids) got any sleep. i remember staying @ Edgewater several years ago with my wife and I and thought it was fine and reasonably priced. Now it is called the "Edge" and is a water park theme catering to families. I stayed there on a Monday evening in June and actually thought the price of the room would be even less than what I purchased. I was with my six year old son and my nine year old son. For the overall value of the price of the room that included drink tokens for a two hour happy hour, a decent breakfast, and a very nice water park, I was pleased. The lifeguard staff at the water park were well trained. I cut my elbow on the fast and dark water slide with my six year old and the one lifeguard was very quick to help me and bandage me up. Very kind young lady. The slide itself was a little too scary for my six year old who is not quite skilled with his swimming but my nine year old absolutely loved the water slide. The other parts of the water park were plenty fun for the boys and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, the room was a disappointment. The shower and bathroom area was very cramped and the bug I found in the bathroom was not something I expected to see. I suggest to stay away from the rooms facing London Road especially the lower ( first level rooms) because you have to go out of your room to get to the hallway to the lobby or water park or anything else and that was an inconvient trek. This hotel does show its age, even though the new theme is trying hard to cater to a younger , family clientele. We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights, 2 kids (9 & 10) and 2 adults. Overall our stay was average, although it was at times crowded (the water park and the breakfast area) as it was Spring break. Our room was in the area that was connected to the hotel via the skyway. It seemed that this was the quieter area, although there were some unsupervised kids running in the hallways. The room had been recently renovated and freshly painted in the hallway, so it was a bit stuffy at first. The "air" worked well and the stuffiness cleared quickly. Our room was actually 2 rooms, having doors opening on both sides of the building. It had a king bed, a set of bunk beds, table with chairs, and a bathroom on one side. This side of the room faced the inside hall, and was fairly quiet. The other side of the room consisted of a pullout couch, chair, lamp (that didn't work), tv, fridge and microwave. This side faced the lake, outdoor pool, and mini golf. The room provided us room to stretch out and we didn't feel crowded. The bathroom was average in size, having the large vanity and sink separated from the tub and toilet.
The water park was pretty crowded when we were there, finding a chair or place to put your stuff took some patience. The water was warm and clear, as was the temp in the park. The features are geared for a younger crowd. The tube slide was fun, as was the lazy river. The body slide was pretty fast and both my kids and husband complained of it having ridges that hit your back. The basketball pool, monkey bars, and whirlpool was nice although really crowded. The giant bucket and play area was fun, although most of the kids there were younger. The lifeguards were GREAT! They were on top of things and not afraid to blow their whistles. They were continually moving and observing. They were very helpful and friendly. Towels are provided and are pretty much available when you need them. The breakfast "buffet" was okay, nothing to write home about...cereal, muffins, bagels, hard boiled eggs, cake donuts, yogurt, milk, juice, coffee and some scary fruit. Get there early as the line can get long. When we checked in we were given 4 drink tokens that could be used either in the water park or upstairs in the lounge area. They could get you soda, beer, or boxed wine, or be used towards a mixed drink. The second night, the policy had changed and we were given 2 tokens, each having a value of $2. They had to be used in the lounge and NOT in the water park. The only thing that you could get for "free" was soda, otherwise you had to pay the difference. Only 1 token per drink.
There are still renovations going on and some of the stairwells are closed as new carpet was being put in. The exercise room was smaller, but did have a treadmill, 2 bikes, and weights. It was always busy and had people in it. Overall our stay was fine, although we would probably stay in canal park the next time.

We were returning from our drive to Florida and decided to spend our last night here. Check-in was fine and we found our room. Once in the room I went to turn on the tv but... no remote. I called the front desk and they said they'll send one up immediately. 15 minutes went by and ... nothing. I called again and they said it's on it's way. Another 10 minutes and ... still no remote. I started thinking 'it's got to be here somewhere'. so I searched hi and low. Then I unfolded the bed sheet... There it was. That got me to thinking. How did it get there? Housekeeping would've put it back in it's place when they changed the sheets... Oh no! They didn't change the sheets!? I took the covers off the beds and to my horror there was popcorn and crumbs and stains all over the bedsheets. If housekeeping didn't change the sheets what else did they not clean? Ughh! and Yechh! Management was 'nice' enough to offer us a complimentary stay the 'next' time we were in town. We were extremely bothered by this experience and hope this was an isolated event. Remember: if it doesn't feel right or look OK investigate and get management. You are paying for a clean room. In our current climate of contagious diseases, viruses and freaks the least we could ask for is a clean safe place to lay our heads. We've stayed at this hotel for years for the weekend of the inline marathon. On this particular weekend thousands of skaters flood the Duluth and since most of the hotels are full to capacity, they can charge ridiculous "Special Weekend" fees. The Best Western Edgewater (previous management) was one of the only exceptions in town and although no coupons were honored, the rates didn't go up too much. As a long-time customer, we made reservations a year in advance for the same room and they agreed to honor the same rate, but when we arrived this year we were put across the street in their ad-on hotel. Yet we didn't receive a lower rate or even the same rate as the year before, we just received a much lower quality room and had to walk across the street in our bathing suits to get to the hot tub(not the waterpark). We asked three times to be moved over to the other hotel, and even when their was room, the young manager really didn't care an ounce, not even a "sorry". Even worse, this one time we actually decided to pamper ourselves a bit and stay there an extra night for our anniversary. (What an anniversary...)Unfortunately, we were most likely moved to the lower end budget motel because they were able to get other guests to pay their inflated rate to be near the waterpark. The staff was mainly friendly (other than the 24 year old manager), despite over hearing some of the staff talk about how bad management has been. We had breakfast the next morning, which was very nice actually, and the staff person working was friendly and said good morning to everyone. It is ridiculous what hotels charge during events like this and even more so when they won't honor promises or even apologize for errors. There are plenty of family-run small hotels and inns just 5-10 miles away that would be happy to have your business.... (For instance, Blue Fin Bay actually had a room for $100, the same as the budget Edgewater hotel...if you have not been to Blue Fin, it's absolutely wonderful!) [My backgrd: 7 of 10 on 'hotel picky' scale / 90~100 nights/year] Stayed here with family & friends while in friends wedding. Is basically a Super8 with a bunch of water stuff. WAY TOO much $$ for value (paid ~$155/nght) - but they have to pay-off their investments in trying to be a "resort". In short, stay elsewhere if you can bride your kids. This place is trying to be what they don't have space & facilities for... PROS: most staffers are very kind esp. @ frnt desk & breakfast attendants!; bath supplies 'designer level'; indoor water park is well designed for limited space; fair breakfast (read cons); good free wifi; bed MATTRESS good (read cons) CONS: Value for money not there; Only place calm area in entire place is your room (if even there); half of property (I stayed) is old motel (exterior doors) & 'dressed-up tired' [newer portion connected to waterpark is seems better, but more $]; bedding basic & traditional (thin sheet, thin foam blanket, disconcerting comforter); carpeting in silly places [near pool: smells like dairy barn...&...breakfast area [kids+food+carpet+time=gross]; breakfast area (was Sat/Sun) is 'mosh pit' of chaos (but staff do very good job with what they have). I'm sure I'm forgetting some good & bad items, but you get idea. Go here only for kids - or the "Water Kid within you". All Duluth rooms seems way overpriced. There are better places to launch MN outdoors day-trips than from Duluth. The chain/non-chain hotels on Canal Park seem nice from outdoors & others in wedding stayed at them with good feedback. A big factor that saved me at Edgewater were the many adult friends who stayed there with us. If were focused 'kids trip' it would have been l-o-n-g. Just my humble opinion: nice people running a place that tries to be more than it can be - at a rate that reflects overpriced hotels across city. My son was a ring bearer in a wedding in Duluth, we go to book a hotel in the Duluth/Superior area. After much looking, we found a water park called the Edge. We call, get a good room rate and book it for August 16 weekend 2008. (month in advance) My wife calls 2 days before wedding to confirm our stay, yup we got correct date and here is the price, we say perfect.... ( they say we were suppose to get email confirmation but we did not get one) 2 days later we arrive from 3 hours away with 2 children syked to go into the water park. We get in the lobby with our baggage, and say we would like to check in. OHHHH, well we dont have you scheduled till September... We tell them we just called a few days ago and this is the price they gave us. Nope, we cant give you that rate, you arent suppose too come for another month. You can come though for 60 dollars more per night for this weekend. We hagel with a manger, drops the price for a little lower, but tells my wife "I cannot offer you a lower rate because upper level management doesnt like giving discounts even if its our fault" She tells them that they dont know how to run a business. We got a few drink coupons and a discount for our next stay and an upgraded hotel room over looking the lake. We got to our room and it was NOISY. It is overlooking lake Superior but also HWY 35 which is VERY LOUD!!! Room was small, not the greatest but we stuck it out. After a noisy sleep at night (from highway) , we had a great continental breakfast. Filled us up. No sausages, but plenty of cereal, eggs, and everything else (not just donuts like some hotels) We went swimming the next day. The swimming area was really nice, kids had a blast. Not as big as the Dell's, but was perfect for that parent watching over there son as they played. Water park seemed newer, and offered a lot of rides ( for a 5 year old)Life guards were on duty circling area which you dont see often. So in conclusion, the hotel wasnt that great but the water park was really nice. If it wasnt for a wedding we were staying for, we would have gone to th Dell's. If you are staying at the Edge, check room rates like 10 times. Not sure if it was a bait and switch or what, but we now have to make up for at least $100 more for the trip we had. We more than likely will not come back to this hotel again. Stayed here to try it out, as their website seemed to be fun. Thought it would be good for the kids - I thought wrong. The water park is OK, but the kids got bored of it VERY QUICKLY. But that's not the hotel's fault - it's just we've done the water park thing before, so it's not so surprising to us. What was surprising to us was how the hotel room was. It was very, very, small. We had a King bed with a bunk bed, and for 4 people I felt like I had to step out of the room to change my mind. The air conditioner/heater was falling apart, and it didn't work very well. The bathroom was not as dark as others had described - but it certainly was very small. The bunk bed was breaking in places - so I instructed my kids to be mindful of certain areas on the bunkbed. The room overall was very small and seemed like it hadn't been updated in years. I know a hotel like this will get worn out quickly because of kids - but I've seen hotels that cater to kids that have been much nicer and cleaner than this one. If you want something to do in Duluth (and you have the money) - I'd recommend trying the waterpark. If you are going to stay here, I'd recommend staying here for one night. If you are going to stay here, I'd lower your expectations - as this is not going to be a 4 star hotel experience. If you want to stay at something like that I'd recommend that Sheraton or The Suites Hotel at Canal Park. When we checked in, there was some question as to whether the room had been cleaned or not. The person at the desk sent someone to the room to check it out and asked us to wait. So we waited and waited. Finally after about 20 minutes, we were told that the room was fine and were given the keys. As soon as we walked in the room, we knew it had once been a smoking room. One of the first things I noticed was there was very little toilet paper. I called down to the desk to ask for another roll. While we were waiting for that, we noticed there was trash in the waste basket and the sheets looked like they had been slept in. So when our toilet paper was finally dropped off, I told the guy that we didn't think our room had been cleaned. He told us he was just dropping the toilet paper off and we'd have to call the desk. So we called down there again and told them we didn't think the room *had* been cleaned. What probably happened while we were sitting for those 20 minutes, is that the person who went up there to check on the room probably quick made the beds. So, anyway, a guy came up and changed the sheets (I had to help him make the bed since it was obvious he didn't know how to do it). He didn't bring pillow cases so we made him get fresh pillow cases, too. The bathroom was in bad shape. There was black stuff all over the shower. I think the problem was that there was no working fan in the bathroom. Since there was no separate switch for a fan, I'm guessing it's one of those fans that automatically go off when the light gets turned on. I think bathrooms are required to have fans, aren't they? The room we stayed in was on the lake side and did have a great view but we'll never stay at this place again. We stayed here for my sons 11 year old birthday. We had 2 rooms with waterpark views, adjoining. The rooms were clean and fine. Fridge, coffee maker, microwave extra sink. We had 2 dbl beds and a pull out sofa, comfortably slept 6 people. My only complaint w/the room is the bathroom. There is barely any light in there. If you shut the shower curtain it's like your taking a shower in almost complete darkness. Other than that no compalints on the room. You get what you pay for so if your going the cheap route and staying in the EXPRESS section then I can see about complaining but the rooms in the main part of the hotel were very accomodating. The waterpark is clean, we were there on a Sat. night and they were 100% full. It was packed but we expected it would be. The continental breakfast was fine. They had, cereal, coffee, juices, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, yogurt some fruit. We did have the pizza and I thought it was very good. Thin crust with lots of sauce. All in all i'd say it was an average experience and would go stay again. I think the majority of the people giving this place a bad review stayed in the express across the street. If you stay in the main part I don't think you have to worry. I stayed at the express inn..there is construction going on..wasn't told about it..pool,hot tub, sauna closed..No laundry room..No public bathrooms avail also hot tub in waterpark was closed have stayed at the edgewater..But never will again. Last year "The Edge" was a Best Western property ... now it is not ... maybe that made the difference??? Both years we stayed in one of the two bath family suites (sleeps 8) for four nights. Last year we had a great room on the third floor ... beautiful view of the lake/bridge, a beautiful balcony, superbly cleaned daily, two free drink tokens for each adult in the room for each night, a great breakfast every morning and a nice waterpark with lots of other evening activities. This year we found that our suite was on the Lower Level ... or Dungeon as we came to call it ... just one suite away from some of the hotel's "inner workings" rooms for maintence or garbage collection or whatever. The most logical entry from the nearest parking lot meant that we had to walk from the elevator through a very sticky tiled area (most likely sticky from whatever was leaking from the large industrial garbage receptacles which often lined this portion of the hallway) before reaching our room. It was completely disgusting every day we were there. Our other option to enter our room was from the outside. There is a small "access" road that runs along the Lower Level suites ... not meant for patrons, but meant for maintence and delivery. We could walk along this access road and enter our room from the "porch" area which was in place of the balconies of the upper level suites. Well, this walk was equally sticky and disgusting ... and also meant dodging vicious pigeons and their droppings. It was so terrible that my mother, who rarely complains, actually called the front desk and told them they needed to get out there and power wash the area because she was sure that much bird poop was a health hazard ... not to mention the other sticky stains from washing out garbage containers. It took two days, but someone eventually was out there power washing the place ... but they did a half-baked job at best. Once inside the suite we found ourselves wondering if the place was actually ready for us ... the floor needed more attention, there were not enough towels for a room that sleeps 8, and didn't restock the room with soaps, toilet paper or kleenex. We called for more towels ... they said someone would be there within 15 minutes ... no one ever came that night. We figured it would be fixed the next day and decided not to complain. WRONG! Not only was the situation not fixed, but it kind of got worse. Someone came in and took used towels and left less than before ... still no attention to the carpet and didn't bother to empty the trash or straighten the beds. For nearly $300 a night, we expected a little better service ... especially since last year was tremendous. It took three days before we finally got decent service and enough towels. In the meantime, our air-conditioner was not working. It was warm, but we probably could have made due with fresh air ... except that all the windows are sealed on this level and we could not leave the door open due to the pigeons! It took a day to get the air-conditioner "fixed" ... but the room never dipped below 80 and always felt stuffy. Also, this year we noticed a lot more difficulty getting parking spaces. Most the time we had to park a nearby restaurant's parking lot and hope we didn't get towed. It seems that there should be one spot per regular room, maybe 2 per family suite, and a number of extra visitor spots ... if that is the case, then everyone who stays at this hotel must drive separately because there is never enough spaces for parking. Oh, and I should mention that the free drink tokens are not free and quite stingy ... we were only given 4 even though we had 6 adults staying for 4 nights ... and the token is only for wine during certain hours or $2 off anything any other time. On the positive side, the water park was still decent and the breakfast was pretty much the same. Overall, the place has gone way down hill since last year ... and we are searching for a new place to stay during our annual visit. Kudos, to the lifeguards at the water park. They were on top of their game. We had a balcony overlooking the indoor water park. It looked like it had never be vacuumed and the walls and glass were filthy. The employee at the grill inside the water park was so rude that I called management and reported him. I think this hotel needs to pay attention to cleaning details. An example would be the napkin holders in the eating areas. Check in went smoothly as well as check out. The continental breakfast was decent. The water park is geared towards younger children. Room service neglected to leave extra toilet paper and did not restock the coffee on our second day. The back of the hotel looks like a pig sty. Avoid booking the bottom floor facing highway 35. It faces a dirt access road and the patios are filled with seagull poop. I would not stay here again and would not recommend it to friends. The rooms looked fine. . BUT. The first room was incredibly noisy. We arrived around 9:30 p.m. and the children next door were crying loudly. The parents were trying to calm them but we could HEAR every word the parents were saying. Not only did I not know how we could sleep, but I felt we would have no privacy of our own. There was no sound insulation. We asked for another room and received it. BUT this one smelled--either of smoke or mold. We decided to stay there anyway. At least it was quiet. Or at least it was quiet at first. At 4 a.m., someone started pounding on our door, trying to get in. First my husband got up and quietly tried to tell him he had the wrong room. Then I got up and told him to go away. Finally we called the hotel manager. By that time our whole family was wide awake. We then overslept the 9 a.m.church service we had planned on attending. The next service was at 1 p.m. We asked the manager if we could check out 1 hour past the noon check out so that we could stay in our room until it was time to go. The answer was NO! They needed our room at noon to get ready for the people who would be arriving and we could not stay even an hour later. The Edgewater said it was not responsible for people banging on our door in the middle of the night and could not let us stay one hour more. I asked the manager if he cared if we wrote a poor review of the hotel and he said there was nothing he could do to help us. At 12:05 the maid knocked on our door to make sure we left. Room had serious mold issues, would not give us a different room, told us we were wrong- Jesse has a lot of schooling to do on how to become a better manager and treat clients with respect. staff is clueless on specials being offered, pool smelled really bad! Our entire experience was a bad nightmare! 20+ minutes to check in. Rude counter person. I wanted to maybe upgrade our room and she would not even give us any options. When we did get checked in there was no parking for our car near the room. We had to haul all our luggage thru the lobby area and up stairs down a long hall, wait for an elevator that took forever. When we got in the elevator the floor was soaking wet from the waterpark area. Got to our room. Very outdated looking. Beds were very worn out. Opened the door to our semi private balcony overlooking Lake Superior. View in the distance was nice of the lake but the freeway is between the hotel and the lake. Very noisy. The semi private balcony is VERY semi! Our neighbor was outside smoking all the time and the smell was coming in thru our air conditioner. The neighbor has several different people staying in his room and I did not feel too secure with that many teen boys out on the balcony that would have easy access to my room. The waterpark was fine, a little busy but fun. The pizza that they have was o.k. but not worth the money they get for it. I would order out. Back to the room. I went to have a shower and the wet washclothes from the guests before were hanging on the shower rod yet. We went to get into bed and the mattress pad was not on the bed so we needed to unmake the bed and fix it. The sheets were SO old that you could actually see the TV through them. I got up in the a.m. to use the bathroom and there were 2 big black bugs in the tub and walked down the drain. We went for the free breakfast.....LONG line, VERY hot in the room....no place to sit. We skipped the breakfast, packed up our stuff and had a great breakfast at the Perkins down the road. I would not recommend this place for anything.....even a free night would not be worth it! stains on carpet everywhere, bedding has big nasty holes in them which looks like hobo central, hot tub valves broken, phone service never hooked up untill several calls to the front desk, the bar/lounge has no variety and your better off eating somewhere else for breakfast, free breakfast does not mean a good breakfast. For what my wife and I paid for this room per night was not worth it, there is other hotels in the area that have the same rate that are much better kept and run. I have pictures not yet developed showing this. if you enjoy spending approx $265.00 per night for the hobo get away I highly recommend this hotel. we will never stay here again!!! We reserved a room at this motel because my 6 year old daughter wanted to stay here so bad. She couldn't wait to see the huge waterpark they have at this motel! So my husband and I along with our three kids, 2mths, 2, and 6 yrs old drove three hundred miles to stay in this motel in Duluth. We reserved the room two weeks in advance. I used a credit card to reserve the room but I asked the lady on the phone if it was ok if we just used cash to pay when we got there. She said that was just fine because they just needed the card to keep the room for us, they don't charge the card. It was ok if we paid in cash. That's all she said to me. So after a long hot day in Duluth, we had a crying baby and a crying 2 yr old and a craby 6 yr old waiting in the car while dad checked in. We were so ready to check in. We waited all day because we knew we couldn't check in until 3 or 4. My hunsband came back to the car and said we have nowhere to stay tonight. He said that the young gal that was working was just rude to him. She said he could pay with cah for the room but that he needed a credit card with a balance of at least $150 on file incase we trashed the place or something- I don't know. My husband said we don't have that much money on this card and it's the only one we brought with. We only had like $75 left on it after using it for gas and our other expenses for the trip. She said well that's our policy so I can't let you check in. So after he told me this I told him to offer her the $150 in CASH besides the cost of our room. So he went back in and came out with the same answer. NO. She said no, I can't give you the room because we need the credit card on file- the cash won't work. Thats not our policy. He even told her that we had resered the room for two weeks, drove three hundred miles, and had a car full kids, and nowhere else to stay. She was just very rude and had no simpathy or even tried to work with us. She didn't even try to talk to a manager to work out something with us. Well, if you have ever been to Duluth on labor day weekend then you know that you can never find a room. It's always booked up everywhere. So literally after 2 hours- we ended up finding a room at super 8. What a crappy day. IWe should have had an idea that things were bad when we cheked in and the girl at the desk said that she had to "check on our room" and didn't return for 3 - 5 mins. Our room was on street leval, facing the road. When we got there the lock on our door was broken, so I called the desk and they said that they would send someone right up. This was around 7:00pm, well with 2 boys ready to try out the waterpark I went down with them and my husband stayed to wait for the guy coming "right" up to fix our lock. Well at 8:00 he still hadn't shown up at the park, so I went to the desk and was told that they had just come back for thier 2nd lock and it should be fixed shortly. Well, at 8:30 it still was not fixed, so I waited in the room while my husband went to the park with the boys. I talked to the night manager and asked for a different room, but was told that he couldn't do that, so I demanded that some be taken off of our bill. It took until 9:00 and 4 different locks, to fix our door. The park closes at 10:00 so we only had 1 hour to be there as a family that night. The breakfast was only fair at the best. If you like waiting in line, cold toast, and english muffins, cold hard boiled eggs, cereal, milk, and juice and not being able to find a place to sit I guess it is ok. We did get to use the park the next morning before checking out. When I went to pay the bill nothing was taken off. They had to call the night manager and got $20.00 taken off. When I got home I emailed the motel and they sent me a coupon for a free night stay, good only for a year. Well we live 5 hours away so we wont be using it. Also, this might be petty, but there was no toilet papper holder, the toilet papper was sitting on the toilet, and got wet when we took a shower. I would not recoment this motel to anyone, the park was fun, but that is what they are going off of, they don't put anything into the motel part. We paid $300 for a suite for one night, and had the disgusting experience of filthy bed blankets (not the bed covers, but the actual blankets, which one would expect to be washed between guests). One blanket had what looked like a 6 inch circular area of dried urine, and the other had too many stains to identify. When we asked for new ones, one of them had a thick white subtance on it that we can only hope was something like toothpaste. The balcony was also filthy, full of ashes and cigarette butts and trash. The waterpark is actually quite small and overrated, but fine for younger kids. My teens were bored after 2 hours. The parking is ridiculous- I have handicapped plates and the hotel lot was completely full- including the few handicapped spots. I was told to park across the street (and what, hobble across the busy road with my cane in the dark?) The staff said there was only parking available for 25% of the guests (the other 75% of us are just out of luck I guess). I threw a fit, so they let me park in the motorcycle spot as no one registered was there with a cycle. Why would they build a hotel and expect people to park a block away??!!. We were told by an Edgewater employee that this is the best waterpark......it's not! Way too crowded! We were also told they had a great breakfast.......yes, if you want to wait in line a long time, get your food and not have a place to sit. Their "sunrise room" is not big enough to hold all those guests; we brought our food to our room. Our main reason for choosing this hotel was so we could view the fireworks from our balcony. We were told we could.....NO YOU CANNOT!!! This hotel is too far away to see the fireworks which are at the port. There is no good view of them from this hotel. Parking is terrible! Plan to walk a great distance in the evening especially! Check-in, check-out and gift shop attendants are all terribly slow and lines are lengthy. The front desk employees also work at the gift shop.....plan on waiting! The hallways and stairways are dirty. This hotel is over rated, over priced and over crowded. I wonder how many Edgewater guests actually return on their next visit to Duluth? I have been travelling to the Edge with my kids at least twice year (probably more) for the past 6-7 yrs. I've had it!!! its over priced, dirty and the staff are ridiculous. When I checked into my deluxe tiki suite, it was not worth the $191.00, the sheets(as well as the washroom) were full of hair and crumbs...that didn't belong to me! It was pouring rain and since the parking is a joke I was told to park accross the street and walk with my kids, my luggage and my shopping bags, here's a suggestion ask the people pulling trailers and motorhomes taking up 9 parking spots(with only two trucks!) to "park accross the street" If you plan on travelling with smaller children then please please keep them out of the dirty pool....its a health hazard at best. The Edge was a great place 4-5yrs ago but now its time for the owners to stop ripping off Canadian shoppers and people from the cities trying to get away from it all! My advice try the holiday inn, it has two nice pools and is well worth the money! My husband had a Hockey Tournament in Duluth and thought it was a great idea to bring the kids up (we are from the Cities) to this "really neat" hotel. We both realized it wasn't as neat as we thought it was. Here are my concerns: 1. The hotel was FILTHY! The stairwells were never clean. The rooms were so dirty-I wondered if they even cleaned them at all. There was always a weird stench all over the hotel. 2. This hotel is out of date/old. For $170-$200 per night, someone is getting darn rich, because the property owners are not re-investing on upgrades or remodeling. 3. The gift shop charged $4 for a SINGLE SWIM DIAPER! Are you kidding me? 4. Parking was a nightmare. There was rarely a place to park & the hotel didn't bother clearing the parking lot of snow/ice making it dangerous. Not even the sidewalks were shoveled. I had to carry my kids everywhere so that they did not slip and fall in the parking lot. There is ONE Entrance to the hotel. I never saw a side entrance. So, we had to park the car, walk quite a ways to get to the hotel, then had quite a walking distance further to get to our room. Incredibly inconvenient. 5. We were there with another couple who waited with their three children OVER AN HOUR for their room to be "ready." This is no joke! I actually had to ask the woman at the front desk when their room would be ready (this was about an hour after they had been standing there-patiently) and she said, oh, it will be about 20 minutes. I told her that was unnacceptable and then (ONLY THEN) did she get them into a room right away. 6. The elevators. I do believe this hotel wins the prize for the slowest dirtiest elevators in North America. Compounded by the fact that you have a 2 year old who is FREEZING from just getting out of a pool and walking into a cold hallway with a "pool towel" that was only slightly larger than a hand towel (ridiculous). NOT GOOD. One last thing. We were in our friend's room (when they finally got checked in) waiting for them to get ready to go down to the pool. My son picked up something , put it in his mouth and started eating it. I quickly got it out of his mouth to realize it was popcorn. I then asked our friends if they had brought popcorn, to which they replied "um...no." The waterpark is not really that great either. My 4 year old spent a majority of the time in the game room. Which was nice, but again, Filthy. The Breakfast area was kind of neat, but again, filthy. This place would be worth it if it were about 60 bucks a night...because its definately a one-star type hotel. When we arrived the first night our thermostat was set to 32 degrees. We turned it up to 74 and it never got any warmer. The furnace made this horrible noise all night and we froze and laid awake listening to the furnace. We called maintance the following day and a few hours later they sent somone up and they said they could not fix it, so we had to pack the 2 families up and move to another room on a different floor. We did not receive any help with moving. It was obvious that this furnace was broke well before we got there. The breakfast area was a MESS, food and pretzels laid all over the floor from the night before (which is a bar at night) and the breakfast bar was a mess as well cereal was spilled all over. It was gross. When we checked out they gave us a $40 dollar discount for the broken furnace and said that is the best they can do for us. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, due to the fact that if you have a major problem like we did they dont handle it in a professional manner.. I hope they dont continue to rent out this room until they get the furnace fixed. This hotel has two locations to it - the building that has the waterpark and the Express, which is located across the street. When you stay at the Express location, you check in at the other location. This in itself is ridiculous, as you have to cross a very busy street to get to the other building. I was hopeful that the Express was to be at least decent, but oh my.... it's a dump. There is terrible, odd, very crowded parking, the hallways are scary, and the rooms are scarier. I think it's one of the worst hotels I've stayed in. The rooms are so outdated and dirty, I mean actually unclean. The carpet couldn't have been vacuumed before we checked in. The beds were horribly uncomfortable. The shower was disgusting and in fact, when we first walked into our room, an old shower head was sitting on the bed, as if maintenance had changed it out and just left the old part there on the bed for us. They have a pool area in the Express that looked decent. They provide breakfast that is adequate, but we got hassled by the attendant because we needed to bring a tray up to the room for another member of our party, and apparently bringing food out of the breakfast room wasn't looked upon favorably. I was so happy to get up the next day and be on our way. It's a shame because the hotel is located in a lovely part of Duluth with an absolutely wonderful view of Lake Superior and the Duluth shoreline, including a great night time view of the Aerial Lift Bridge. Bottom line - this hotel is a huge disappointment. Do yourself a favor and stay near Miller Hill or the airport and drive down to the lake if you can't afford to stay in Canal Park. The waterpark is good for the kids and has ample seating. Lifeguards were good. Mounted high above the kiddy slides/pool area is a giant bucket that fills with water and dumps all over the area every 3-4 minutes. The dump is preceeded by dinging bells as the bucket reaches full. This was scary to my 4 year old and he wouldn't go near the area. The snack bar food is awful and very over priced. This is the only place to eat inside the hotel. There was 1 teen ager working the area at 5:30 on Friday nite - which was prime dinner time. The free breakfast food was also awful! Cold toast, old/dry donuts and muffins. All of the food areas were dirty. Other than the updated bathroom counter and newer microwave and refridgerator, the room was dirty, ugly, and small. All buttons on our heater/air conditioner were broken. The furniture is cheap and falling apart. I would not stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone. Went with a wedding party. They told us one price and when we arrived it was higher. They told us everyone was paying the higher rate. We ended up having to take a room at the express for a higher rate than the wedding party was paying to stay at the main building although the reservations were made together. The express was a dump, the bed was duct taped together, and the room smelled bad. One of the rooms was booked in a member of the wedding parties name that was shared with out of town friends, the member of the wedding party had to leave early and when the out of town person returned the keys the hotel made them pay for the room. Weddings are stressfull enough without worrying the hotel is going to screw you over. Day One: Elevator broke and folks were stuck Strange chemical smell in the upstairs area (beyond chlorine) Bed buds found on our queen bed Toilet runs and then suddenly flushes on its own TRAFFIC noise is so loud we realized we were yelling during our conversation Parking over flow -good luck in the PM Every square inch of flooring is wet and dirty Maid made fun of our floor calling it the dungeon...because it is dark and dirty...had to agree with her Carpets are gross Trash blows up against our patio door so bad that we have to push hard to open it. Well, my hubby just checked us out and got a refund. So, no Day TWO torture....sorry folks. Please don't go here!!!! Read other post. I am close to calling health department on this pile of trash!! What a disappointing stay. The hotel is clearly in need of major repair-the carpets are falling apart, various smells throughout the property, EXTREMELY overpriced. The ONLY thing that saved this hotel was the fact that the waterpark was available for the kids, however the room and the breakfast were inferior to any chain such as Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn, etc-certainly not worth $180 per night which is the current price. While I would like to thank those that made the effort to book a block of rooms for the Fluvial Geomorphology course, I would be remiss if I did not advise that the DNR never book another room at the Edgewater Express again. The condition of the hotel was, altogether, rather vile. The initial impression walking into the door was a smell of 30 years of cigarettes and three-week-old beer cans. In short, it stunk. The flooring was buckling; the wallpaper was doing the same. The ceiling tile was stained and missing parts. The room had hairs, dust, and smells left behind from previous occupants. The coffee maker had the last resident’s coffee in it. The bathroom was so small that it became a joke, among participants, that you could shower and use the restroom at the same time. You could hear conversations in other rooms via the ductwork in the room. An alley ran adjacent to the only window in the room, and when I say adjacent, I mean within 6” such that you felt spied upon if your window blinds were not overlapping. There was no elevator, no handicapped access or ramp, and a pool of drowned cigarette butts soaking in tan water outside the door. The cleaning crew advised us that even they wouldn’t stay there considering some of the filthy horror stories they had to clean up. When I finally had enough and picked up the telephone to dial “0” to complain, the entire face of the telephone caved into the set; there was nothing there to hold it in. When I reached someone and complained, about the lack of cleanliness, I was told I’d be given a free pizza, and no one ever showed up to do a better job of cleaning the room. The lights flickered. The water changed from hot to cold without notice, and the list goes on and on. Across the street, at the renovated and main building of the Edgewater, I’m told the rooms were quite nice, however (and double the price). We promptly moved to the Red Roof Inn, in Duluth, which was the exact opposite of the Edgewater Express, with the exception of the lack of an elevator. Again, I am not writing for the sake of simply complaining, but I would be remiss if I did not offer the details of my experience to anyone considering staying at the Edgewater Express in Duluth. Please pass on my comments to whomever you feel it is appropriate. Imagine a beautiful lake view, a huge pool with tons of amazing waterslides, and luxurious, clean rooms. Although expecting that of "The edge" hotel, when we arrived we found out that this so-called "resort" was the exact opposite. On the outside it looked like a warehouse. We were all crossing our fingers and hoping that it was nicer inside, but to no avail. The inside was like a warehouse too, only unrenovated. What was supposed to be a "resort" was really an uncomfortable motel. When we got to the front desk, the man gave us unclear instructions on how to get to our room. We had to walk outside, all the way around the building (In the lovely heat wave, at that) and into an elevator with garbage piled in the corner. When we stepped out of the elevator, we found that we were in the basement. Our hotel room was beside a few electrical rooms, and in a hallway in which the floor looked like hadn't been cleaned for a month. Our actual room looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a year, or maybe more. We had no windows and barely any light, and it was then that we decided to stay at a different hotel. That might have been one of the best desicions I've ever made. The rooms were unclean and horrible, and it wasn't anything like advertised. The "water park" was a truck-sized shallow pool with some small slides leading into it; in which there were about 50 kids all crammed together. Can you say "hepititis" kids?
