Overpriced - poor value | Read all reviews
Expensive to stay here but comparable with Thunderbird Lodge and Holiday Inn. We paid $89 after 10% seniors discount (over 55 - a plus) which brought total price per room after taxes to well over $100. A big minus was no continental breakfast included. The room was Ok but no microwave or fridge. A fridge can be ordered for $7 a night. Navajo run and staff were not particularly forthcoming on tours to Canyon de Chelley. "You'll find some leaflets on the table." There is a restaurant on site but did not look particularly good so we went to Holiday Inn along the road and despite the staff being very stretched as the restaurant was full we had friendly service and quite a good evening meal. The next morning we had breakfast at the Thunderbird Lodge cafeteria which was very good value and efficient. Not next door to a young offenders institution as one correspondent stated (its about half a mile away towards Holiday Inn). Chinle seems a very depressed run down town though with no credible dining options other than the three hotels. Sleep was disturbed a bit by howling wild dogs nearby. We did not try out the swimming pool or other facilities so cannot comment on them.

We loved this plac! Spacious rooms that were nicely decorated (loved the wooden beams on the ceiling completing the southwestern feel) and very clean. The kids loved the indoor pool and the adjacent restaurant was so good that we ate every meal there despite planning originally to try others. The staff at both the restaurant and hotel are very polite and helpful and professional, the restaurant is also very clean and newly decorated or remodeled and has an interesting menu with traditional navajo dishes as well as pizza for the kids. We plan to go back to Canyon de Chelly and will definitely stay here...best lodging experience of our long road trip so far! This is the third time we have stayed at the Best Western Canyon de Chelly in the past two years. We have always had a good experience. Last year we were pleasantly surprised upon arrival to find that they had completely remodeled the motel rooms. In December, they remodeled the restaurant. The food is reasonably priced and tasty. There is also a Pizza Hut. The property is updated and clean. This is the only property in this area that offers an indoor pool, sauna and jazuzzi. The Navajo employees are friendly. We enjoy staying at Best Western Properties. We come to Canyon de Chelly once a year. The canyon is truly beautiful. I usually stay at the Holiday Inn until I noticed the renovation of the Best Western. The room are large, clean with new furniture. The indoor pool and sauna was a big hit. The restaurant food was very good and staff were friendly. I had a great time. This is the place to stay. New parking lot too and trees planted every where. I had a nice experience. My wife and I stayed in the Best Western in Chinle at the end of July 2006. The hotel is run by the Navojo indians and all the ones we came in contact with were pleasant, polite and extremely friendly. The resturant was clean and served good food at a resonable price. The rooms were clean but like a hotel in Three Rivers they used a strange cleaning agent in the room and it smelled strange for a short time. The swimming pool was clean but it was a light green colour and the people behind the desk explained that they used the local spring waters to fill it and then the water turned green with the chorlination. I used it and felt no ill effects and unlike a previous reviewer the bottom was clearly visible. They do have free WiFi internet but my connection was not stable. A friend that I have't seen for years and I decided to do something adventureous. We booked a tour to Canyon De Chelly in Arizona. We decided on the Best Western . The property was under some renovation and we arrived late so we went straight to dinner. I ordered a Navajo taco this was my first, but it was great. The staff was friendly and very helpful with the local lore. We went to our room and again I was suprized to find a charming room, that was clean and designed well. The gift shop in the lobby has all this beautiful jewelry and I couldn't help my self so I bought way too much for me and my family. You don't see much of this back in New York. The experience was great, the people were very nice and I will come back next time with my friend and family. I highly recommend this place. The Best Western at Canyon DE Chelly was a nice time. Thanks for the memories, Katie Surowiec Tuxedo Park, NY We booked two room for one night on a road trip through Utah, Arizona and Colorado. Got the State Gov rate of $60 a night, so can't complain at all. Standard motel room, but on the large size. Not too sure about the safety at this property, we didn't experience any problems (there was a dodgy, but harmless, 'local' hanging around at the reception), but there were security warnings on the doors and in the welcome material in the room, plus a security guard at night. Food was a bit of an issue - the restaurant on site closes at 8pm and dinner was not too good (apart from the frybread!). Close to Canyon de Chelly, the main reason for our visit, and the Canyon is beautiful and obviously has a very interesting history. Walked down the the White House Ruins at dawn - nice and quiet (no one else on the trail and it wasn't difficult - 1.5 hours return). (+) Room was adequate & clean and perhaps recently renovated. Good shower. Has adequate restaurant on property and pool. (-) Noise (water & conversation level) between rooms. Not the best pillows or bed. (+/-) Staff was okay (did their job) but were not overly friendly or courteous. Rooms have outside entrances, so that may concern some. All in all, this is a decent accommodation for a brief stay. While, as other reviwers have noted, Chinle is a bit of an abyss, this is certainly a good place to stay. The town has a bit of a stray dog problem, especially within the borders of Canyon de Chelly, but we saw only one or two while at the hotel. The rooms were relatively spacious and came with a refrigerator. However, when we arrived, it was off and never quite got perfectly cold in five days. But, we had a cooler and made do. There's no continental breakfast offered in either hotel in town, but the associated restaurant is the one of the two spots in town and offers a widely varied menu. It seemed a little understaffed though. Overall, there weren't many options, but this one served us well. I arrived at the hotel at 1:00am, and the person in charge was very courteous. The room was big, and the bathroom was VERY CLEAN. I loved that! I needed toothbrush and toothopaste, and they brought that for me. They also provided a comb in the morning. I was pleasantly surprised, but for the price, I guess it was right. When I asked about the tours there, the guy said that it would cost me US$140 and he could arrange it for me. When I went the next day to the canyon, I saw that the price for THREE hours was US$45. I was glad I hadn't done anything through the hotel! I was very pleasantly surprised by the overall experience I had at this hotel. The hotel exterior pictures on the hotel website, coupled with knowledge from a previous visit of the area that Chinle is not the most pleasant town, caused me concern prior to my visit. Upon checking in the lobby area is clean, modern and well decorated. The desk clerks are neatly groomed, smiling and well-dressed. The rooms are lovely and recently renovated. The main living areas of the rooms have been refurbished to include accent walls of a deep Southwest color with rich texturing. The beds are comfortable and the furniture is all new and in good shape. The carpet is new and clean. The bathrooms are in the process of being rennovated but apparently all in the later stages or complete. I stayed in two rooms at this hotel (on either ends of a multi-day backpack trip into the canyon). My first room (122) had been entirely renovated except for the shower. While the shower was clean, some of the tiles were crumbling and the shower head was FAR too low for most adults. At 5 feet, 8 inches, I was very uncomfortable showering and needed to bend at unnatural angles to shampoo my long hair. The second room (101) had been entirely renovated. The shower was beautiful polished stone/marble and the showerhead had been located in a proper (higher) position. The restaurant is clean, modern and pleasant. The food is tasty and the service ranges from good to great. If planning another stay in the area, I would return to the Best Western Canyon de Chelly without a moment's hesitation. We spent one night at this BW while visiting Canyon De Chelley National Monument. The room was large and quiet - even while located on the ground floor. We did not notice a lot of noise from other guests walking past. That may have been because it was early in the tourist season. We had a king size bed and the bathroom was also very nice with the sink area separate from the remainder which allowed us to take advantage of time. There is really nothing else to do in Chinle, AZ except to visit Canyon de Chelley so if you are visiting in the afternoon and need a place to sleep for the night this could fit the bill as there is no other city/town nearby as the distances are great in this part of AZ. We had breakfast at the restaurant that is adjacent to this BW and found the staff friendly with prompt service and good food. We just stayed one night and had a good experience. The kids enjoyed swimming in the indoor pool. The room was typical motel. Our only issue was the heating unit is pretty loud when it turns on. The restaurant on site was better than expected. The service staff did a great job, quick w/ refills and taking orders. We felt the staff was friendly. We arrived late afternoon and did the south rim drive. Hiked down to white house ruins. Great hike -recommend it. THe highlight of the trip was our canyon tour. We chose Antelope Tours with Adam Teller. He did an excellent job describing the canyon and it's people. We highly recommend him. We booked through his website. I would not recommend just going with what your motel recommends-you just do not know what you are getting. Our boys age 7 and 10 really like driving through all the water at the canyon bottom. My main reason for my visit too Chinle was too visit Canyon de Chelly .The Best western was in my opinion was a nice expierence.I found it too be clean and well run,There is a resturant opposite the hotel which gets very busy in peak hours as from what i could see apart from Burger King is the only place too eat in Chinle. You wil have too go hear for breakfast as the hotel doesn`t lay on a free breakfast in the morning like most Hotels.Canyon de Chelly is a lovely place and its easy too spend a whole day hear. I chose too do a Thunderbird tour of the valley floor as you can only enter the canyon with a Navajo guide although there are other guides available its well worth it.I then drove the North and South rims in the afternoon. This is a very convenient motel to stay for visits to Canyon de Chelly, which is only 2 miles away. The room was clean and quiet. The service personnel was helpful. Another plus is the excellent restaurant located on motel property. We stayed at this motel on September 22, 2007. The room was very clean, quiet and comfortable. We even had a small refrigerator in the room. We ate breakfast and dinner at the restaurant, The Junction Restaurant, and were very happy with all of our meals. After traveling for a week, we enjoyed the home-cooking. The front desk even made our reservations for our trip into Canyon de Chelly the next morning. We used Tseyi' Jeep Tour run by Bobby Vanwinkle. It was a wonderful adventure. Chinle is really out there so you don't have much of a choice, but we made the right one. The hotel was very clean. Front desk person wasn't too friendly, but that wasn't why we were here. Plenty of towels, good bed. I wish they had the regular Best Western breakfast, but they don't. We stayed here the night before our guided tour of Canyon de Chelly. Whatever you do don't go for the shake and bake tour. We booked a private tour with Canyon de Chelly Tours and it was great. Same money as the other and much more personalized. Don't shortchange the Canyon. Give it time. The hotel is minutes away. The restaurant next door has Navajo foods and a regular menu for those who don't want to experiment. Reviewer: NM Traveler, Albuquerque, NM We enjoyed our stay at the BW in Chinle, AZ. The room was clean, well maintained and quiet. The beds were comfortable resulting in a good night's rest. Although I didn't use it, I was impressed that the hotel offered free wi-fi. The staff at the front desk was cheerful and eager to serve. We appreciated having a very nice restaurant on the premises. The food was good and the service there was great. I counted nine servers at dinner that night. They also have an indoor pool. Oct 14, 2006 E.G.M. from Massachusette My sister, neice and I stayed here on our 9th night of a 2 week trip to Utah and Arizona. Before going to the motel we went to Canyon de Chelly. There was a sign on the door of the of the visitors center telling people to remove all items from their cars and to lock the car doors. When we got to the motel to check in there were lots of security cameras. The room itself had 4 locks on the door, but at no time did we feel unsafe. The room we had was completely remodeled. Everything was brand new. It was large and spotless. We stayed at the Best Western in late September. Just returned home a few days ago. It was a very nice, clean and well run hotel. The a.m. dest clerk hooked us up with Adam Teller, a navajo guide and owner of Antelope House Tours. He was the most enjoyable and intellegent person we have ever met in our travels. He took us for four hours in our own 4 wheel drive into the canyon. I would recommend the Best Western for anyone planning on visiting Chinle and Adam Teller to anyone looking for a guide. Stayed at this motel in July 2005. Paid $101.62 including tax for a standard room. Requested a non smoking room but was put in a smoking room. Sixty watt bulbs in the room made it hard to read and do desk work. Otherwise room was clean and nicely furnished. Junction Restauant located in the motel parking lot was very good and reasonably priced. This motel is located three miles from the entrance to Canyon de Chelly. Holiday Inn and Thunderbird Lodge are closer to the Canyon entrance. The Best Western Canyon de Chelly Inn is a two-story hotel located on Indian Route 7 in Chinle. The hotel is within three miles of Canyon de Chelly National Monument, the main attraction near Chinle. Although the hotel is located on the main road that connects US 191 with Canyon de Chelly, the hotel is relatively quiet. The hotel has ample parking. Except for stray dogs, the hotel seems safe, too. The staff are courteous, but I did not interact with them too much. The rooms are clean and very spatious. All the furniture is relatively new, and the decor has a slight, tasteful hint of the Southwest in it. The only problem is that the hotel rooms do not have internet access (despite Best Western's claims that all hotels have internet access). The hotel encircles the Junction Restaurant. This family restaurant serves an odd combination of American, Navajo-style Mexican, and Oriental food along with Pizza Hut pizzas. The food, while unexciting, is decent. It is a good place for either families or tired travelers to eat. The hotel does have both an indoor pool and a whirlpool tub. I did not use the facilities, but they looked very nice. The only major drawback to this hotel is its high prices. Otherwise, this is a good hotel for anyone who is visiting the Navajo Indian Reservation, particularly Canyon de Chelly. Just be prepared to pay high prices for the hotel rooms. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The rooms were clean and spacious. One big negative: there are no connecting rooms. We had rooms side by side, so with three kids, one parent had to sleep in one room with two kids and the other parent in the other room. As others have said, it's overpriced, the staff is polite but not very helpful but it's conveniently located to visit Canyon de Chelly. The room was big, quiet (second floor) and clean, except for the water that came out yellow for the first 10 minutes. As there aren't many other opportunities, we would stay there again. Location was good, close to Canyon de Chelly. Rooms were nice, spacious, quiet and clean. The indoor heated pool was kind of unusual, but still enjoyable. No breakfast included. Nearby, a restaurant served our purposes. There is not much choice of hotels in Chinle, the property was all booked, mostly by tourists. The price was not so cheap as a consequence. Our experience was ok overall, we would come back. After having to change my plans at the last minute and head to Canyon De Chelly, I arrived after a bone-jarring day of 13 hours, and just wanted to rest. The first motel I spied was the Best Western, and while not happy with the price of $117.00 for AAA members, I booked it. There is a restaurant on site; however, no vouchers are given for breakfast for paying guests of the hotel, which, given the price of the room, should be mandatory. The motel was clean, and off the main street, located just a mile to two from Canyon De Chelly. There is a thriving community in Chinle with a bank, post office and several other restaurants. The motel staff, while not overly friendly, were courteous, but I found out that in the Navajo culture, looking directly at someone and being overly familiar to someone they don't know is considered bad manners. Anyway, given that there were limited choices, the motel was a good deal. We didn't care for the town of Chinle much but it's the Canyon de Chelly that you're there for after all. The Best Western Canyon de Chelly is an old fashioned motel-style hotel with reception at one end and the restaurant and pool in the middle of the parking lot. Check-in was okay but a little disinterested. The room, on the ground floor was of a good size, reasonably appointed but very clean and tidy; the bathrooms seemed to have been recently remodelled and ours was quite attractive. We didn't have a good night's sleep though as the airconditioner was really noisy and both starting and stopping made a loud rattling sound which kept making my other half jump - not very relaxing for either of us!! The "junctions" restaurant was pretty good with a wide selection, good service and reasonable prices. This sums up the hotel I suppose; reasonable in every way but I wouldn't want to stay again unless I was visiting the Canyon de Chelly for which it is ideally located. I spent one night at this hotel at the end of May 2008. The hotel is conveniently located if you plan to visit Canyon de Chelly. I had a second floor room with a king sized bed. I would recommend asking for a room on the second floor. Every time I walked around, the floor made quite a bit of noise. I'm sure it sounded like I was jumping or stomping to the people in the room below me (I wasn't.....really!) Overall, the room was a standard budget hotel room. It was clean, and the bed was reasonably comfortable. There are two computer stations in the lobby so you can check your email (free) although they do limit you to 30 minutes as a courtesy to other guests. I did have two concerns/dislikes- I think the sheets were a polyester blend, because I woke up sweating and the room was cool enough that I should have been comfortable. The water ran a bit yellow. I didn't notice this until I was nearly done with my shower, and then it seemed like the water changed color. Before brushing my teeth, I closed the drain on the sink and ran some water. Sure enough, the sink was filling with yellow colored water. I brushed my teeth with bottled water. We stayed here for 3 nights in mid April to visit Canyon de Chelly Natl Monument. The room was clean, but the mattresses were getting old and saggy. We wound up using both beds (2 full beds in room) so we could find a decent position for sleeping. I had trouble using the keycard thingy (altho I often do. keys are so much easier.) Everything in the bathroom worked fine, and there were multiple ice and drink machines in the property. We never got around to finding the pool. It wasn't entirely clear where it was, but it was cold anyway so we didn't bother looking. The website didn't really make clear when I booked that there's no continental breakfast, so I hadn't planned for that. There is a burger king in town, or the restaurant that's in the hotel parking lot. That seems to be it. We did the burger king as it seemed like it'd be quicker. Of the three properties in Chinle, this one is farthest from Canyon de Chelly. It's only a couple of miles, but still it's a drive. I'd probably stay at the Thunderbird lodge next time, as it's both at the mouth of the canyon, and has a cafeteria. As others have stated, Chinle isn't much of a town. It does have a gas station, but not much else.So bring a book if you'll be staying for more than a day. Remember, Navajo Nation doen't allow alcohol, so all the restaurants are dry. Don't get me wrong. The staff was great except for not receiving our wake up call. The room was spacious, clean and nicely decorated. Restaurant on property had wonderful blue corn mush and pancakes not to mention regular items. But we were disappointed in the indoor pool, hot tub and sauna, we were soooo looking forward too. After a long day of exploring the canyon, we wanted to come back to a nice swim and rest our muscles in the hot tub and sauna. The pool was cold, hot tub luke warm at most with very few jets working and the sauna no matter how long we let it warm up it never got there. Once we were done trying them all and were very disappointed and felt we definatelly needed to shower because we weren't sure how clean it was. All in all, if your going and you really don't want to use the pool, hot tub and sauna it's great but if you do you'll be disappointed unless it changes. We stayed here in October 2007. We paid $81 plus AZ state & Navajo taxes for a good sized room with king bed. Everything was clean and working. The Inn is about two miles from Canyon de Chelly Park. It has an indoor pool and fancy hot tub. The pool has windows and is beside a deck with chaises, so you could go in and out (in another season!). There is no complementary breakfast but the big breakfasts in the restaurant beside the pool are good value. We arrived at Best Western Canyon De Chelly Inn in the late afternoon on Friday (Oct 5, 2007) for one night. We drove from Page and visited Monument Valley and Four Corners before arriving at this motel. We were initially assigned a room on the first floor but when we checked the room it was not cleaned as the trash was not emptied and there were several towels with fresh blood stains. We immediately headed to the front desk and they immediately reassigned us to another room on the second floor which made it harder for me as I had to carry the suitcases upstairs. This new room was okay with TV and AC. We noticed ,however, that the foor was somewhat uneven. After a 323 mile drive my wife and I wanted to relax in their indoor swimming pool and spa (whirlpool). We did relax for about forty minutes but as it became dark the main lights did not go on and the only lights were near the restrooms. My wife and I looked all over the place but there were no light switches as well as phones to call the main desk, so we went back to our room. The parking area was adequate and the restaurant was fairly good. We were treated courteously. The front desk and check in /out was okay and when we mentioned our problem they could not give us a reason why the lights were off in the indoor swimming pool. In the morning, we visited Canyon De Chelly and it is certainly beautiful. Quality control is needed as management must be aware of these problems. We got a deal through AAA ($63) & the hotel was pretty much what we expected. Just 2 stories, with outside entrances. The room was a bit dark but clean, the bathroom looked very recently refurbished and was just fine. The Indian staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant there serves very good local food, very interesting. The hotel is a typical Best Western. Operated by Navajo staff who really tried to make our stay pleasant. The rooms were clean and well maintained. Has a clean pool and the restaurant has great food and portions. The restaruant closes early, about 8pm local Navajo Nation time. Centrally located, but away from the busy highway. Based on price, all lodging in the area are priced about the same except the Holiday Inn was a bit higher. We're only concerned about a clean room. We lucked out. We got a room on the second floor that was totally renovated. New carpet, new bathroom fixtures, new drapes, new paint. The use of the internet was free. To request a small refrigerator was an additional $7. The front desk personnel were very friendly, polite and helpful. Be prepared to pay a Navajo Nation tax on lodging and everything else. Gas prices cost more in the area due to this tax. There really wasn't anywhere else better to eat than the restaurant next to the Best Western. If you're planning to visit Canyon de Chelly, you have to take the canyon tour. You can buy tickets at Thunderbird Lodge. It's better to do the all day tour than the 3 hour tour. The 3 hour tour is really a 1.5 hour tour. You go in for 1.5 hours and then turn around. The all day tour allows you to have a closer look at the petroglyphs and homes built into the canyon walls which if you were doing a rim tour would have been nearly impossible to see. If you're thinking about just doing the self-guided rim tours, allow 1.5 hours each for the north rim and the south rim (totalling 3+ hours). an adequate hotel, on the Navajo Reservation near Canyon De Chelley. The rooms are adequate, comfortable and clean. The restaurant is ok. It needs an overall upgrade, not sure if would stay again. The hotel has Best Western normal standards, the room was clean, but the staff at the reception is absolutly unhelpful. Nevertheless I would stay there again. We stayed here for one night after visiting Canyon De Chelly. We had no problems checking in or with the staff, but the person in front of us was upset about not being able to open the door and then finding out that the bed was not made and the room was not clean. We ate dinner and breakfast the next morning at the hotel restaurant, Junction Restaurant. The food was good, the portions were large, and the price was low. There were a lot of local people eating there also. Overall, a convenient location and a good place to stay. There aren't a lot of options for staying in Chinle, or really, anywhere near here, but this motel is a good choice. It's nothing special, but it's clean and comfortable and the rooms are a little on the large side for most motels. The pool is indoors and nice. The adjacent restaurant is a good place to eat and has good prices and food. Because there isn't a lot of competition, this rates at this motel are a little steep, but if you are looking to visit the area, this is a good choice for a place to stay. One night was ok for this Best Western. The room was dark and needed updating, but very clean. Spent two nights here while in Chinle on business. Front desk personnel were super - friendly, helpful, and polite. My room was clean though not well stocked and very cold. The shower did not work on the second morning and they didn't replace the coffee packets when they cleaned the room so I had no coffee on day two. (No shower and no coffee - Ouch!) Honestly, the only saving grace was the staff - they were wonderful and even with all the issues, I would stay again because the staff was so awesome. There is a cafe on-site and the staff there was wonderful also! Just proves that customer service will compensate for a lot of things. Alles in allem recht ordentliches Motel. Super für Touren in den Canyon. Würden wieder hier übernachten.

We stayed here one night and were not impressed. Motel appeared worn, although the rooms were not too bad. Girl at the front desk appeared disinterested and informed us that the wireless was not working (a problem we experienced at several Best Western's in AZ). There was an odor in our room-possibly the rug or the A/C . If there had been another room available, we would have switched. After having had dinner at the Holiday Inn, we were sorry that we did not stay there. This town is a depressed looking town and definitely has a stray dog problem. We were just waiting for someone to hit them as they cross the street. My family and I stayed one night to check out Canyon De Chelly. The motel provides the standard amenities. The heater was loud and woke me up every time it came on during the night. That wasn't so bad since we were only staying for one night. But what was unreasonable was the extra "energy charge" that showed up on the bill when we checked out. The energy charge, the front desk clerk said, was for the use of water and electricity. Huh? Wouldn't those be included in the room cost? The energy charge was never mentioned in the reservation emailed to us. Neither was the fact that the local tax went up, a fact that apparently still doesn't show up in the Best Western's central reservation system. I called Best Western's customer service and was told that individual motels are allowed to tag on extra charges and those charges wouldn't show up on the reservation. This is a deceptive practice. We will avoid Best Western in the future. The Best Western was a good value and came with a little better than average accomodations for a Best Western. There is a good restaurant in the courtyard that you will like for its food and convenience. It not the Ritz Carlton but then again, it doesn't cost as much either. If you want to take a step up at a higer price, the Holiday Inn is your best bet. The hotel is convenient to the canyon and to the only store in town. The only minus was they were resurfacing the parking lot and the door lock was barely functional. Otherwise, vintage Best Western and maybe a little better than average. If you just sleep there, it's fine. We went to Canyon de Chelly to see the canyon in August this month with two moms and three kids. We booked the Best Western because it seemed to have the most amenities and so the kids could swim when we were not at the canyon. There is NOTHING else to do in this Navajo town and it was hot hot hot. When we arrived, we discovered that the complex containing the pool, spa and sauna were all closed for renovations. Apparently for some kind of annual repairs. The desk clerk told me they tried to tell them not to do it in August, but the management didn't listen. At this point, with only three hotels in the town all sold out, we were unable to go anywhere else so we had to stay there. To add insult to injury, some kind of large machine was stationed right across from our room working on the renovations and grinding a horrible noise like a dental drill until 10 p.m. one night, and then after our complaints "only" until early evening the next night. We talked to the manager and she said she would move our rooms, but when we got back from touring the next day, our rooms had not been moved and no one seemed to know what we were talking about. This did not endear us to this hotel. I also heard the desk clerks taking bookings from other people on the phone without warning them the pool was closed. We drove out and saw the lovely Thunderbird Lodge in its pretty grounds next to the canyonand wished we had booked there even though they don't have a pool! The food was better at the Best Western, definitely than at the Thunderbird, we ate there one night and it was not good. And the rooms were nice at the Bestwestern, typical stuff with a coffeemaker and a small fridge (not turned on). After our complaints, they gave us a small discount on our rooms, but it wasn't much. The canyon was great. If we come back here again, we'll definitely stay at the Thunderbird--but eat at the Bestwestern! from the unfriendly reception, to an attempt to book us into a suite, rather than the king size room we had ordered, to eventually a dark and dismal room, to a miserable 3 mile drive each day to the Canyon - this was a poor choice (ours) ... the other options would have been preferable no doubt. do not recommend the best western at chinle. also, the on site restaurant was simply awful. Don't know where the other folks reviewing the BW stayed, but this hotel was marginal at best IMO, and depressing to us all. Indoor pool (main reason for us picking this hotel for our Canyon de'Shally tour) water was so green you couldn't see the bottom. According to the staff the pool "was safe", but there is a problem with minerals in the Navajo nation water supply casuing the color. The toilet and bath water appeared fine, and the pool water was opaque past the first ladder step, so I doubt it. Rooms OK, but a musty smell that set off my wife's alergies. Restaurant OK, but the wait staff was terribly unresponsive (may be a curtural thing.) The hotel was just recently converted from a smoking establishment, so make SURE you get a non-smoking room. Had to send back 2 rollaway beds because they reeked of smoke. Only hotel I stayed in AZ that didn't include breakfast, and it was $100/night. Most of the problems were the general location itself - within a very short walk to Juvenile detention (prison), a behavioral treatment center, etc. Chinle (and the Navajo nation itself) is extremely poor, and it makes one want to join a native American rights movement, but not what you want when you are taking the family on vacation. Bars were on the bathroom window overlooking a dirt paved and trashy alley - there were men n pajamas walking it in the morning. There were men drinking from bagged bottles in the complex. If your plans include a Canyon de'Shally tour (which was awesome), I would definitely either stay outside of Chinle (but plan on an hour r more drive to Chinle), or stay at the Thunderbird Lodge, which looked less dingy on the outside (but still has the same location issues.)
