This is a great place to stay in Freiburg. We walked in and were given a large corner room with view of Cathedral for 75E. Great breakfast included and everything about the hotel was wonderful. Clean rooms and bathrooms, comfortable beds, free internet access, very friendly staff, steps from city center and great restaurants/bars/shopping. Top choice - A+ We stayed in the annex which is a 90 second walk around the corner. Didn't bother us because the side street is very cute with shops and a nice little quiet bar down the street. our room was very modern, with a large bed, dark hardwood floors and flat screen tv. The balcony is just big enough to enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. our very clean bathroom had a tub as well. it's a bit of a hike from the train station, about 20 minutes or so. but it's also very centrally located to the street car, cathedral, plenty of restaurants and the Schlossberg. Reserved but friendly staff. The breakfast is excellent. The owner even let us check our email in the lobby with a general computer which is very handy. A bit expensive but definitely worth the value. I loved this hotel: in a quiet small street, yet very close to the main attractions, a splendid old building, nicely refurbished, but maintaining its charme. The room I had was fine (I had booked a single, but the gave me a double at the same price), spotlessly clean. Staff were friendly, and breakfast was very good. Room rates are very moderate. The Schwarzwalder Hof also has its own restaurant, where you can enjoy regional cuisine at very reasonable prices. I will definitely stay again there next time in Freiburg. We just returned from Freiburg after a stay at this hotel. We highly recommend it as it is right in the centre, it is spotlessly clean and has very reasonable rates that we assume the management keeps low as a matter of principle rather than neccessity. The restaurant is not to be missed, the food is marvelous and the wine list is all local. We could not speak better of the place. Okay, so this review is a little after-the-fact but I wanted to give this superb little place a thumbs up. I've stayed here twice with my better half, once in 2002, and again in 2003. Both occasions were stop-overs whilst heading for the mountains on camping trips. The first stay was just to regroup in comfort after a few nights under canvas, the second time the stay was kind of forced on us as our car's exhaust started blowing badly as we pounded down the autobahn. Knowing what a pretty place Freiburg is we decided to detour there and by the time we limped into town the exhaust had sheared off completely. We eventually thundered into the car park below the castle and fell gratefully into the arms of this smashing little hotel. First of all this hotel - as with many on the Continent - is very good value compared to UK hotels. It's small and neat as are the rooms, but it has a little flair and some interesting bits of artwork and sculpture dotted about. Nothing way out, just quirky enough to make it feel above the ordinary. I think we paid around 60-65UKP for a double room with breakfast on each of our two stays. We looked first at a similar size hotel round the corner with equivalent prices and it was nowhere near as good quality. The host is an amiable chap and speaks good English. He listened to our problem with the car and announced his son was a mechanic and would have a look for us! Son duly turned up but on checking out the problem (it needed a new cat) he admitted defeat and we received directions to the nearest dealership. Of course by this time they were closed so we were there for the night. Aw, what a shame ;o) On our first stay we had a (very) small but immaculate room overlooking the picturesque lane above the hotel entrance. Great for hanging out the window watching the locals ambling by and socialising. Second stay we were given a larger room in their annex, which is a separate building just around the corner. Just as nice. This room though had a balcony overlooking the quadrangle formed by the neighbouring buildings, so it was great for sitting out with a beer watching folks in their apartments going about their business. Not quite Rear Window, but close. Breakfast was typically Continental but delicious and the dining room was very atmospheric - lots of old wood panelling and the sun streaming in. We didn’t sample the evening fare. All in all we were made very welcome, given every assistance, and had a perfect couple of nights here. I would definitely stay here again. We spent five nights here in September 2005 and loved this little hotel. The location is wonderful, right around the corner from the Munster. Freiburg is a wonderful small city and this hotel is right in the middle of it all. Our room was anything but ordinary, particularly the bathroom. Maybe it was just our room, but I thought it was definitely 5star. The best hotel we had on our European vacation. My wife is German so we had no language problem, but some of the staff had no english at all, which might be a bit of a problem for some travellers. My wife and I stayed 4 nights at the hotel this past December. Herr Engler was a most gracious host. The rooms were very clean and the rates were exactly as quoted. The location is very nice for walking through the old town area, and the parking garage next door makes it very convienient for arriving by automobile. We would stay there again anytime. Very happy with my choice in Freiburg. Good large room in the annex, excellent breakfast, friendly service. Free internet - and free travel on trains etc in the whole region - a great bonus! Staff were very helpful when a noisy group disturbed me from their balcony one day... Freiburg is a gem and this is a good place to see it from. We stayed at the Hotel Schwarzwalder Hof for two nights in September. We were given a double room in the annex building which is around the corner from the main building. The room was very clean and had a complete bathroom with shower and tub. It did seem somewhat sterile though; not much in the way of charm. It may be that the rooms in the main building have more character. There was some noticable noise from a nearby kitchen in the mornings and evenings. I should note that we had the windows slightly open to let the fresh air in. What made this hotel nice was the great location. It was in an area of lots of shops and restaurants and only a couple of blocks from the Munsterplatz. All in all we were happy with our room considering the price we paid for it. Freiburg itself was beautiful and a very relaxing place to spend a weekend. Lots of charm and great places to eat and have a drink while watching the world go by. The surrounding countryside is beautiful also. I would definitely recommend getting out of the city and touring the area if you have the time. The scenery is breathtaking. Stayed two nights here. The room was small, but that's not unexpected in Europe. Location was excellent (in the city center). Room was clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included and was a very good, typical German breakfast. My only complaint was there was a street light outside my window and my curtains weren't thick enough to keep the light out, however I opened the wardrobe door and that would block the light. I stayed in this hotel for one night in late November. The location is perfectly in the city center close to all the sites and shopping. Breakfast was plenty and the reception staff was very friendly. I had a double room with a shower and sink inside, but toilet on the floor. The room was very clean and basic but had a small TV. Ask for a room not facing the street if you can. Otherwise, you risk being woken up by someone rolling their luggage down the cobbled stone street. Be prepared to be woken up before 9 am by hotel guests using the floor shower and toilet. The cleaning staff starts their shift early which can be heard in your room. Bring your own soap and shampoo as they are not provided by the hotel. TIP: if you are driving park in the very near Schlossberg parking garage. You will pay only 9 Euro for the night, as oppose to the 15 I paid somewhere else. Please do not crumble your parking ticket, as it will be impossible to pay on a Sunday when the only machine refuses to take it. We stayed in their annex rooms around the street. These were very quiet and very close to main hotel. Rooms were basic, clean and comfortable. They could do with updating the avocado bathroom though! Breakfast was fabulous. Fresh fruit salad (none of this tinned stuff), plenty of selection for meats, cheeses, cereals, etc. This hotel was just off the Munster (main square) and so close to everything. Reasonable price and I'd stay here again in a flash. | ||||
