5 of 5  Nothing Like The Cape Grace, A TripAdvisor Member, Newport Beach, California, September 2, 2005

We just returned from South Africa and stayed at this wonderful hotel for 8 nights. We don't understand or agree with ANY of the FEW negative comments on earlier reviews. This lovely hotel has everything to offer for anyone. We were with two young children and the staff catered to them daily-including gingerbread cookies, milk and bedtime stories on their pillows nightly. The location of this hotel is ideal and in a very safe location for walking even at night. The waterfront mall, restaurants, movies. Robben Island ferry are all within a short walk. The rooms were very luxurious and spacious. The food is great. The BMW that drove us to local destinations (included in nightly rate) was so convenient and available to us whenever we needed it. The staff set up numerous tours for us and arranged for a rental car to be brought to the hotel. How easy is that? Sign the papers in the lobby and drive off. When you return, leave your keys at the desk and the rental company picks up the car for you. You can get a light menu in the very comfortable and beautiful library. Great laundry service. Lots of cute sea lions and seals right out of your hotel on the docks. Loved waking up to the sounds of the fishing boats getting ready for the day. The other side of the hotel did have construction across the water but looked at luxury yachts. We enjoyed our view of the fishing boats and waterfront. We will definitely only stay at the Cape Grace the next time we are in Cape Town and so should you!

5 of 5  Best Hotel Ever!!!!!!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Jersey, United Kingdom, June 13, 2009

This hotel is the best ever!

This best thing about the hotel is that the staff and managers are so very friendly and helpful so that this hotel is the best ever!

Stepping out of our transfer from the airport the concierge greeted our daughter by her Christian name and this was the start of the best ever hotel we have stayed in both from the staff, the hotel room and the excellent restaurant where we were given glasses of Chardonnay while waiting for our wine to cool. It is all the very small special touches and helpfulness which distinguishes this hotel from the rest and so you really must go there and stay and enjoy it for yourself.

5 of 5  A Fantastic Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, County Durham, May 23, 2009

If you are reading this and trying to decide wether to book, do it its amazing you wont be dissapointed! We stayed at this hotel in Jan last year and had the most amazing time.

Rooms

Very well equiped we had a separate dressing room, large bathroom with walk in shower separate toilet,we didnt have a view of Table Mountain as we were at the front of the hotel. We had a juliet style balcony and had a lovely view over the V&A waterfront.Plenty of storage in the room, lovely toiletries similar to Molten Brown/White Company.Plenty of tea/filter coffee, biscuits, bottled water, lovely turndown service with choccies etc.

Pool

I agree with previous reviews the pool area is quite small but as there is so much sightseeing to do in Capetown we only spent 2 days by the pool.Pool service was good ate at the poolside and it was lovely. We thought the meals really good value.

Bar/Food

The bar in the basement was fab,the biggest wine cellar ive ever seen.Really great staff .The bar gets really lively on a weekend and has a great vibe cocktails were fab.We also ate in the bar and again food was gorgeous and reasonable. We had both breakfast in our room and in the restaurant and both were great.

Spa

Was lovely I had a pre long haul flight treatment on my last day which was great,a massage & scrub then inflatable sort of leggings it was lovely and my room had a view of table mountain. When I got back to my room after my teatment there was a little gift from the spa which was a nice touch.

We ate at a couple of restaurants on the V&A waterfont and they were all good even tried Ostrich.I would recommend a trip to Table Mountain hotel will organise a car or taxis are sooo cheap. We went to Robben Island the ferry crossing is only a few minutes walk from the hotel, quite an emotional experience and well worth a visit. We also took a taxi to Camps Bay which was amazing, fantastic beaches and restaurants ate .We ate at the most amazing restaurant which was one of the top places to eat overlooking the sea dress up a bit it was v posh.We had friends staying in The Table Bay which didnt look as nice as our hotel, much bigger and not as classy. The shopping centre on the V&A waterfont is great not any cheaper than home but lovely designer shops.

Oh and dont forget the amazing wine.

Hope you decide to visit we will return!

5 of 5  could not have been better, A TripAdvisor Member, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, May 13, 2009

My wife and I stayed at the cape grace a few weeks ago. It is without question the greatest service we have ever received. We are used to staying at Four Seasons, Ritz Carltons etc so we know nice hotels. The service here was unreal. The hotel offers a complimentary car service anywhere in a 10km area. We went to Table Mountain and the hotel dropped us off and picked us up in their beautiful 7 series BMW. We went to a restaurant for dinner and they dropped us off and told us to call them when we finished and they came right back to pick us up. Each morning with our wake up call came a knock on the door with fresh coffee and tea. Every night we came home we had a small gift waiting for us. I would recommend anyone to stay at this hotel provided you are not scared off by the high rates they charge. It's not a cheap place but to me it is well worth it. It's in a great location for walking to shops/restaurants and many other activities. Jules and Andrea in particular were just incredible helps to my wife and I as we had never been to Africa before. It was a truly amazing experience.

5 of 5  Wonderful hotel, wonderful location, A TripAdvisor Member, IN, April 24, 2009

This hotel deserves all the accolades it receives. We were there for five nights in a rooftop terrace room and couldn't ask for better. The service, the friendliness, the location - all was great. It is expensive, but it is an expensive area. We thoroughly enjoyed the activity of the adjacent harbor area. A perfect place for our first stop in South Africa.

5 of 5  an unexpected pleasure...., A TripAdvisor Member, southampton, April 17, 2009

my husband and i spent 5 nights here, hotel is very elegant has almost a colonial feel.perfect spot right on the marina facing table mountain!our room was lovely beautifully furnished with juliet balcony facing table mountain and marina down below us,wonderful sights from the moment you woke!

service excellent, good choice of food only down side was pool area very small totally not suitable for a hotel of this rating or room size!if you were there to want to use the pool daily i can imagine it would become a gripe!we werent so didnt bother us!

pre going i wasnt keen as didnt know what to expect, having stayed there all i can say is capegrace is somewhere we would def return to...!

5 of 5  First class service, first class staff, A TripAdvisor Member, west yorkshire, March 30, 2009

We have just returned from staying at this hotel for 4 days and found it exceeded our expectations. From the moment we walked through the door, we were made to feel very special. Yes, it is expensive, but we felt it was worth every penny. Our room was beautiful and could not have been any better. Breakfasts were delicious, although it was a bit annoying having your cooked breakfast served before we had finished the fresh fruits and cereal. Utilise the car service, but book well in advance as it gets booked up. These drivers take you from a to b very efficiently. We do like good manners but be prepared to say good morning approximately 20 times before you sit down for breakfast.

The hotel is in an excellent position on the Waterfront but is very quiet on an evening. The pool area is on the small side, we would not want to spend a day round the pool relaxing.

5 of 5  Luxury Hotel with a personal service, A TripAdvisor Member, Colchester, UK, March 15, 2009

We booked this hotel a year ago, specifying a Table Mountain/Marina view and was advised this would not be a problem. Of course, upon checking in, the unsurprising happened, when being shown to our romm I casually mentioned that did we in fact have the requested view? Casually he remarked that this would not be availble until tomorrow. I wonder if he ever was going to tell us this and hoped we wouldn't have noticed as we were practically in our room as he mentioned it!

I was disappointed, especially with a years notice, but understand it does depend on availability of people prevoiusly occupying the rooms and that there were only around a dozen of these type of larger rooms with balcony. To his credit he did try again to see if a room was available, but the assistant manager Jacques rang up to apologise, but would ensure the next day, upon our return from our trip to Aquila Game Reserve, our bags would be transferred.

True to his word, upon our return, we were handed new room keys and we were shown the way. As soon as we settled down the phone rang and it was Jacques once more apologising and hoping we had settled down OK.

This level of service was continuous throughout our 4 night stay there and this was the only little blip of our stay. The check in area/lobby is quite small and informal where you just sit down at a desk, sign a guest book and check in. We were there an hour or so before our room was ready so we were shown to the library for complimentary tea/coffee before we had a look around this hotel.

It was very well adorned with nautical themeing and little touches such as fishing nets in the chandeliers and other unusual objects. Each floor had it's own theming from copper utensils and other objects in glass cabinets down the hallway to wooden artifacts - very unusual but attractive. The pool area, as some have said, is compact and small. Not befitting of a 5 star hotel, but you make do because there is too much to see in Cape Town to be stuck by the pool for any more than a day or 2!

Our room was spacious and modern with (at last!) a great view over Table Mountain and Marina. We had a nice little balcony to sit outside and watch the comings and goings. We had a small hallway with tea and coffe making facilities, with for the 1st time I have seen, little fliter coffees you just pour water in while sitting on top of your cup and out drains a tasty coffee, and there were 'coffee' bags (like tea bags) and little biscuits and free water. To the left we had a walk in closet with umbrellas and iron and plenty of space for your case and hanging clothes. Opposite this was another 'case space'. Next there was the large bathroom with bath and shower and double sink, contemporary and indiviually decorated. Our bedroom area was spacious with a comfy chair and 2 seater settee and a wooden lattice rope seat at the end of the bed, in African style I guess, along with a wooden chest and large wooden (inoperative/decorative) clock on the wall. The bed was very comfy indeed. TV was LCD (no ipod docking station) and provided a good range of channells.

The breakfast was good. A La Carte, sort of, and you could have more or less whatever you wanted and as it was included in our package we didn't pay any extra for this (unusual, no buffet for a pre-paid package, so nice change for A La Carte). We had dinner one night and it was very good with an unrushed (bordering, perhaps on the slow) pace, but it was all good with a wide choice of meat and fish and wine (superb and very reasonable, as the food prices, for where you were, compared to UK).

All in all , the service was second to none, with frequent use of our names (how do they remember?....). On the last night one of the managers came out knowing it was our last night, and using our name hoped we had a great stay and hoped to welcome us back again. The car limousine service was good, which we used twice - very prompt, efficient and friendly, but you must pre-book.

Location is great, on the V&A waterfront, where we felt safe while shopping and eating. Would recommend Balthezars on the waterfront for a superb meal (fillet steak, peppercorn coating!), right overlooking the water with amazing food and a great atmosphere an a gorgoeous South African shiraz! Amazing night and meal, very relaxed.

We had a lovely stay in this lovely hotel and city. Cape Town and the surrounding areas are beautiful with rolling hills and mountains and greenery just a few miles from the city cenrte. Our wine tasting day (20 tastings later!) was great and the scenery was so vibrant and green and colourful and went on and on. Cape Point was breathtaking as was Good Hope and the Botanical Gardens - we also went to Camps Bay for a nice sunset meal in Blues.

Would go back, lovely hotel (expensive), personal service, well appointed rooms, reasonable priced and high quality food and drink and friendly people. The room issue was soon forgotten and we now have to start saving to return in a few years - and we will!

5 of 5  Best Place to Celebrate a 40th Birthday!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Kikambala Kenya, March 14, 2009

We loved the Cape Grace - our room was over looking the marina and the bed was so comfortable, the bathroom luxurious & the service so gracious. On my husband's birthday, we were moved to the Penthouse Suite as a special surprise!! Loved the spa treatments as well. It was truly a trip to remember and we would recommend this hotel to any one looking for a special hotel.

5 of 5  Perfect service, but still soul searching, A TripAdvisor Member, Monte-Carlo, March 11, 2009

Outstanding service and breakfast. Free limousine service within 10km radius proved very effective. Good choice for business traveler. Pool area not good enough for leisure traveller: you need to walk in your bathrobe through the lobby and library. Don't like the waterfront location, but this is really up to personal tastes. Interior design quite sophisticated, but still in search of a soul of its own.

5 of 5  Amazing hotel in a great city, A TripAdvisor Member, London, England, March 5, 2009

My wife and I stayed at the Cape Grace during out honeymoon in July of 2008...The hotel is in a great locations on a quay close to the center of the V&A waterfront...It is surrounded by the water and has great views of the mountains that surround Capetown...The hotel is designed in an elegant colonial/nautical fashion...Since it was our honeymoon, the hotel upgraded us...Little did we know that we got upgraded to the Penthouse Suite...The room was huge...Probably about 1200 square feet with a huge terrace (with hot tub) and large living room...The complimentary mini bar was fully stocked...When going to dinner the hotel provided us with a free transfer in a luxury car when it was available...The staff was very helpful (although we did run into an occasional staff member who was not as knowledgeable as we would have expected)...Although our experience was clearly skewed by our amazing room, the hotel was still great...During our stay we went to the Table Bay hotel (not as personal or elegant as the Cape Grace), Twelve Apostles hotel (not as refined or professional but with a great view) and the Mount Nelson (very stuffy and didn't benefit from the waterfront location) and the Cape Grace was definitely the best hotel in town...Cape Town itself was amazing...There were a lot of attractions around town (Botanical Gardens, Cape Point, Table Mountain and the vineyards) and magnificent restaurants (Jardine was our favorite)...In my opinion it is only topped by Sydney in terms of my favorite cities in the world.

5 of 5  Wonderful!!, A TripAdvisor Member, london, February 28, 2009

5 of 5  Just as wonderful as we remembered!, A TripAdvisor Member, Birmingham, February 20, 2009

We stayed at the Cape Grace in 2007 and have been itching to get back! We weren't disappointed - the hotel is still the most fabulous place to stay. The staff are utterly wonderful, the rooms are perfect, and the Bascule bar is THE place to be! We have never stayed in a hotel that is so welcoming - nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Everyone is so cheerful and friendly and so proud to be working for such a terrific hotel. The bmw courtesy cars are just fab. Add all this to the fact that you're on the V&A waterfront.......perfect! We shall be back (in a couple of years, when we've recovered from the flights!) Jane and Chris, UK.

5 of 5  All we expected and more, A TripAdvisor Member, Killarney, February 2, 2009

We went to south Africa on our honeymoon and spent 5 nights in The Cape Grace. Reading everything about it we had high expectations and all those were exceeded. It is a deserved 5 star international hotel. Excellent bedroom with all you would need and more. The attention to detail was superb and the decor was very elegant and relaxing.

Mini bar was good value which is a nice change in a hotel. Housekeeping was excellent and really flexible. The concierge was excellent and really could not do enough for you especially Natascha (I Think).

Breakfast was excellent and can be served throughout the hotel. The same policy applies to lunch and dinner i.e it is the one menu that can be served whereever, whenever. It really is all about the customer. Did not have dinner only light bites but all were excellent and good value.

The Bascule bar is also a nice chilled out spot for a coffee or tipple. Tahiir was very kind.

The real bonus in The cape Grace is The car Service which drops you off/picks you up at various points. Ricky was our principle driver and he was excellent. Courteous, prompt, informative. A real credit to The Hotel and made our excellent stay better.

Geoff was also a great guy who was always there to help out with the smaller things. It is also a great location in The V&A but not too close. Overall The V&A is a little touristy but seems very safe anfd you can walk everywhere. In terms of restaurants balthazars in The V&A is great for steak and pretty straightforward casual dining. we also ate in jardin and Aubergine which are meant to be Cape Towns best. While both very good I think that there must be better.

There is good jazz in the Green Dolphin. Overall a great city and The Cape Grace is the spot.

5 of 5  Surpassed all expectations., A TripAdvisor Member, London, England, February 1, 2009

Absolutely perfect hotel. Great location by the V&A Waterfront, where the best shops are and from where you get the ferry to Robben Island. Newly refurbished in an up-to-date and stylish manner. Rooms gorgeous - we had Rooftop Terrace ones with a view of Table Mountain. There were sealions in the marina just below the hotel. The hotel is the best I have ever stayed in. The breakfast was excellent. They give you fresh milk in your room for your tea/coffee-making facility. It's all the little extras that make this hotel so special. The evening downturn service even positioned the television so that it faced the bed - and, no, there is no design fault with the television. I found it easy to change its position and it would stay in place. Everything was wonderful about the hotel, but the best was the service. The Concierge would do anything for you. They even managed to get us a table for lunch at La Colombe restaurant at Costantia Uistig (fabulous food and wine) which gets very booked up.

5 of 5  An absolutely outstanding hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Bristol, January 31, 2009

An absolutely outstanding hotel!

The Cape Grace is quite honestly the best hotel I’ve stayed in anywhere in the world - and the list of those I’ve stayed in recently includes the Burj Al Arab (7*) in Dubai, Claridges in London, The Hilton in Auckland and The St. Moritz in Queenstown. I would rate the experience of staying at the Cape Grace as being far superior to all of the others.

The hotel has an atmosphere of serene elegance about it and the décor is unique and inspiring. The people all seem to be, quite rightly, proud and happy to work there and are all extremely helpful and efficient. It was difficult to identify particular individuals who provided an exceptional service, since they all did, without exception.

The views from the hotel rooms are spectacular.

I rarely have lunch or evening meals in hotel restaurants, but after having lunch there on the first day, I ate there every single day of my seven-day stay. The chef, Malika Van Reenen, deserves a medal for preparing such innovative and delicious meals. The Degustation menu in the Signal restaurant is a must-do. Mine was prepared by Dillon and his team and was honestly the best meal of my life. (Wikipedia definition: Degustation is a culinary term meaning "a careful, appreciative tasting of various foods" and focusing on the gustatory system, the senses, high culinary art and good company”). The wine has been chosen to match the food faultlessly.

Even checking-in and out of the hotel is a pleasure and is carried out sat at one of several receptions desks rather than standing at the usual impersonal and imposing long counter that is standard in many lesser hotels.

I never stay in the same hotel twice if I’m re-visiting a city, but I certainly would make an exception with the Cape Grace. For me it’s the only hotel in Cape Town to stay in. It was a truly memorable experience.

Regarding negative aspects of the hotel - well there weren’t any. None. Not even one. None at all. Now that's never happened to me before!

5 of 5  Waterfront, A TripAdvisor Member, Uppsala, January 26, 2009

This hotel is fantastic. Great breakfast, The room I had was big and spectacular, plus for the mini snacks and coffee making facility in the room. It also has a great location by the waterfront.

5 of 5  Loved the breakfast, A TripAdvisor Member, Cape Town, January 20, 2009

I won a voucher for a breakfast for two at the Cape Grace's new signal restaurant - what a wonderful experience!! Although they don't offer a traditional breakfast buffet, the portions are big enough to fill anyone! The service was excellent and the food incredible! The hotel was really quiet when we visited so that could be the reason for the very attentive service. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the experience and couldn't fault them on anything. The manager, Michael was on hand at all times, and came over to chat to us on numerous occasions. He remembered that I had called earlier in the week requesting a reservation and enquiring about aspects of the menu. overall, brilliant service and great food.

5 of 5  YES! You will love this piece of paradise!, A TripAdvisor Member, Seattle, WA, January 16, 2009

Stayed here for 3 nights when we first arrived Cape Town. Ahhhh, it was so wonderful! The service, ambiance and pure bliss of finding such a perfect place was unbelievable after the long haul flight from the states.

Our Travel Consultant had to remind us to "take a break" before the 2 week stay in Africa - we traveled to 2 different countries other than So. Africa. It was such a good idea!

The spa here is to die for. The menu of selections from massage, to facials to relaxation methods are the BEST!

Our Travel Consultant, Donna Salerno has been in the travel industry for a number of years and knows how to tailor a trip! If you are looking for luxury accommdations and need some help in planning the best trip ever, I would highly recommend her expertise.

It comes with a 100.00 Research Fee, but goes towards the cost of your trip when you book with her. And well worth your time and effort. She really puts together an amazing experience.

Cape Grace is on a private quay between the harbor of Cape Town's busy V&A Waterfront and the fabulous international yacht marina. It offers traditional sophistication combined with modern amenities in some spectacular guest rooms.

I would make this trip again just to stay here and visit the spa---everyone of the party of 4 that we travelled with loved this place! The day trips that were planned were so easy from this base hotel!

After a day of seeing the sights and shopping, visiting some of the most unique places in Cape Town and it's surrounding areas you just want to be pampered! - this is your perfect escape! Enjoy!

5 of 5  Smooth South African Experience......, A TripAdvisor Member, London, January 6, 2009

My family and I have just returned from the most wonderful holiday of a lifetime in South Africa........We had been planning our trip for months and had called around various tour operators and even at one stage thought about arranging it all ourselves by using the internet..........On recommendation of a good friend we called Essential Escapes in London [--] and explained to them that we wanted to do a Safari for a couple of days and then hire a car and explore The Garden Route, finishing off in Cape Town for a few days..........Everything was arranged perfectly ( taking into consideration our every requirement) by the most helpful staff. They booked our international and internal flights, a great Safari which our children absolutely loved, carhire and the best hotels and guest houses the whole way along The Garden Route to Cape Town, where we stayed on The Waterfront at The Cape Grace....a perfect way to end our trip......The Cape Grace's location was perfect for us to make day trips in our hire car to explore Table Mountain and to visit the penguins at Boulders Beach, Cape Point and of course the winelands......I would recommend Cape Grace to start or finish any trip to South Africa and of course Essential Escapes in London for ensuring our trip ran smoothly.......

5 of 5  The best address in Cape Town, A TripAdvisor Member, Johannesburg, South Africa, January 6, 2009

My family and I were at this superb hotel for 14 nights over the Xmas/New Year period. We travel overseas regularly and usually stay at the Four Seasons/ Ritz Carltons or equivalent hotels. We were not disappointed at the Cape Grace. From the outstanding personalised service to the well appointed rooms, we are all just raving about this hotel. In the rooms, every little detail is thought of so that you are comfortable enough to never want to leave your room. Even the view of the marina from the room is breathtaking. The breakfasts were a treat - you simply order whatever you want. The concierge service is world class, but so is the service everywhere. Nothing is a problem -they are there to make your stay as pleasant as ever. We were proud, as South Africans, to hear overseas guests at the hotel ooh and aah about the establishment. They found it world class in every respect. The hotel setting is dramatic- it is on its own jetty, and, hence, almost entirely surrounded by water. You feel that you are on an ultra-luxury ocean-liner that is visiting Cape Town. The V and A Waterfront shops and restaurants are minutes away, but enough of a distance to allow the hotel to retain its atmosphere of peace and seclusion.

5 of 5  I liked it..., A TripAdvisor Member, Rainton, North Yorkshire, December 20, 2008

I'm not sure how so many poor reviews have been recorded for Cape Grace. I thought it was excellent. We stayed in one of the larger suites with my family. The quality of this was fantastic with great views across the marina towards Table Mountain.

We stayed for three nights and ate at the hotel's restaurant which was also excellent. I saw a few people complaining about the service at breakfast, but didn't experience any significant problems myself.

We'll be going back to South Africa for the World Cup and will probably be back at Cape Grace.

5 of 5  First class hotel that ticks all the boxes, A TripAdvisor Member, London, November 18, 2008

We stayed at the Cape Grace during November - it was a superb experience.

The service was first rate. We had a large, newly refurbished room looking over the harbour and an excellent bathroom. Nothing had been forgotten, they were good on the big things, (great bed, linen, towels, bath) and good on the small things (smellies, tea and coffee etc).

The refurbishment is somewhat conveservative not the edgy waterfront look and feel that I somehow expected, but very comfortable. The chauffeur service is very good, just remember to book in advance during peak times (mornings and dinner) and the the hotel staff fell over themselves to help.

Its expensive but worth it as you do feel spoilt!

Great breakfast choices too; and such a nice change to have table service rather than the dreaded hot buffet.

First rate, it deserves its conde nast award.

If I had one small nag it was that on the morning of check out the door bell went three times before 9am with people wanting to clean, check the mini bar etc.

5 of 5  Perfection!!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, new jersey, October 26, 2008

I cannot understand the recent negative reviews of Cape Grace. I stayed five nights in October and had a fabulous stay. It was the absolute highlight of my two weeks in SA. The hotel staff are some of the friendliest I've encountered. The facilities are newly refurbished (yes, the renovations were completed before my arrival) and the gleam shows. Room service was quick and tasty. I did not eat at the restaurant, so can't comment there. I stayed in a superior room with a wonderful view of the harbor and table mountain. The complimentary internet in the business center was most appreciated.

The complimentary car service is just one of the extra touches that distinguishes the Cape Grace from other luxury hotels. The drivers are prompt and professional. The concierge arranged two tours for me, both of which were excellent. The winelands tour was especially wonderful.

My stay in Cape Town was great and I felt safe everywhere in the city. I highly recommend Cape Grace for any wanting a central location and luxury hotel experience.

5 of 5  Wonderful hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, London, October 7, 2008

We stayed here at the start of our honeymoon before travelling on to Mauritius. The hotel is amazing. It's in a great location and the staff are excellent. The room was spotless and the bathroom massive. I just have nothin bad to say about the place and we are already thinking about returning.

5 of 5  wonderful cape grace, A TripAdvisor Member, seattle, washington, September 22, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Cape Grace for three nights prior to leaving for safari in Singita. Our very early morning check-in was accommodated with a beautiful large room overlooking the marina and Table Mountain. It is in a great safe area convenient to shopping and restuarants. The car and driver were easily available and made going out to dinner or Table Mountain very easy. The entire staff is very professional and friendly. We would definately return. The on-going renovations were never an issue for us.

5 of 5  Amazing Grace, A TripAdvisor Member, Hong Kong, China, September 19, 2008

We started our South Africa Holiday in August 2008 by staying in the Cape Grace for 3 nights before going to Singita Lebombo (see seperate review). We found the Cape Grace to be a beautiful deluxe boutique hotel in a great location with stunning views across the Marina on one side and the working harbour on the other. We generally had lunch and dinner out exploring the culinary delights of Cape Town, but the breakfast in One Waterfront was truely exceptional and we liked to sit in the Conservatory enjoying the view of the pool and Signal Mountain. A great way to start the day!

The staff we always very helpful. We made use of the complimentary BMW car and driver on a number of occassions and used the Hotel to arrange for us a helicopter charter that took us around Cape Town & Robin Island, down to the Cape of Good Hope, whale & dolphin watching in False Bay then up to the Wine Country for a winery tour and lunch and then lastly a few minutes hovering over the ground to see the Springbooks play the All Blacks. Basically all of the family's apparently conflicting demands were achieved in one master stroke.

The Hotel managed our early morning arrvals with aplomb, my daughters flying into Cape Town from London, whilst my wife and I flew in from Hong Kong. They also bubblewrapped our handicraft purchases fo us when we left. There were hotel renovations on going but we were never aware of them.

The Cape Grace is a place that I would be happy to return to.

5 of 5  Great service, great location, A TripAdvisor Member, Redmond, Washington, September 7, 2008

Comfortable luxury on the Cape Town waterfront. Easy walking distance to V&A Waterfront shopping & restaurants. Great "extras" available, too, including local driver, wine tasting at 6 pm each night (sign up at concierge desk).

Hotel is undergoing upgrading, but work is only done between 10 and 4 and did not interfere w/stay.

5 of 5  Grace by name, graceful by nature, A TripAdvisor Member, lincolnshire, September 1, 2008

It does what it says on the tin. A lovely, elegant hotel in a perfect location on the waterfront. Charming, friendly (without being familiar) staff. Beautiful room overlooking the harbour. Personal chauffeur incuded was a real bonus, and on a long drive back from the wine country, our chauffeur ( after a little probing!) provided a fascinating insight into life in SA today for a black resident. It's all about the next generation apparently, and I sincerely hope he is right.

Only slight disappointement was dinner at OneWaterfront; it wasn't bad by any description, however we had been so spoilt this time by other meals ( in particular, La Colombe at Uitsig in Constantia...oh wow!) OW didin't quite live up to expectations.

Neverthless a fantastic hotel, thoroughly recommmended.

5 of 5  Outstanding Water Front Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Granite Bay, Calif., September 1, 2008

It is easy to be disappointed when you are expecting something very special. We weren't.

I had made arrangements with the hotel before our stay for a refurbished room, and it was beautiful, with views over Signal Hill and Table Mountain.

The staff were very welcoming throughout, remembering our names, and doing whatever they could to help.

The guys running us around in the cars were great - very personable and helpful.

My husband and son used the Virgin Gym through the hotel, and were well impressed.

We would very happily stay at Cape Grace if we were fortunate enough to visit Capetown again.

5 of 5  Pampered in Cape Town, A TripAdvisor Member, London, June 23, 2008

Perched on Cape Town's 'Waterfront', with Table Mountain towering behind it, and the wharf and eventually, the ocean, to the other side, this hotel is the perfect base for exploring Cape Town and being pampered at the same time.

There are a multitude of reasons for choosing this hotel:

First, it's perfectly positioned for access to the bay, Robben island and great tourist attractions, but it has easy access to the town.

Second, we stayed in a newly renovated, delightfully appointed room - a terrace suite at the top of the hotel, with the most breathtaking view of Table Mountain. I can't vouch for any other room, but that one was magnificent.

Third, the service provided by the staff was of the highest order. The hotel were renovating the floor below us, but work only happened between 10am and 4pm, so we never heard it, and the hotel gave us a voucher as compensation. They also provide cars to ferry you around, if you book them, and each evening we were greeted as we stepped out of the lift on our floor with two people bearing wine and light bites for us to take to our room.

Location, service, luxury...a combination that was worth the price.

5 of 5  Best Hotel in World, A TripAdvisor Member, New York, June 7, 2008

Our stay at the Cape Grace was incredible. The service was the best that I have ever experienced and I am a very experienced traveler.

The hotel has 3 BMW 7 series with drivers available at no charge to bring you wherever you wish. When you arrive there are 5 people to greet you. There are 4 concierges available all day and evening to help you plan your trip. Our room was perfect overlooking the water with fresh flowers and all amenities. I wanted to have my pants pressed and it seems the staff was at my room before I hung up the phone. Food at the hotel was OK but the restaurants around Cape Town were outstanding. Great stay. I highly recommend the Cape Grace. It was clearly worth the expense.

5 of 5  "Great Hotel", A TripAdvisor Member, Princeton Junction,New Jersey--USA, May 17, 2008

My wife and I spent 4 night at the Cape Grace---April21--25.We loved our stay. The location is terific--next to the Victoria and Alfred Mall---and near the boat trips to Robbin Island. The rooms are great and the staff is exceptional in their hospitality and service. There are many excellent restaurants nearby---like Baia--which is in the mallThe restaurant in the hotel is also very good.

The hotel has BMW cars that will drop you anywhere in Capetown ---a nice touch.

The nearby wine country is more than a day trip---we stayed in Franschhoek---which has to be one of the most beautiful settings in the world!!

I would definitely stay at this hotel again---It is one of the best in the world.

5 of 5  BEST YET, A TripAdvisor Member, belfast, May 17, 2008

An absolutely fantastic hotel. stayed 8 nights, did very little sight seeing preferring to stay around the pool every day. Service, rooms staff location brilliant.

Wine list etc good. very relaxed environment where the guests needs were addressed very quickly.

Despite the cable car getting stuck on Table Top Mountain and the ferries not running and electric power cuts this was a brilliant holiday at a really top class hotel .

The views from the bedrooms were truly awesome, to wake up with the mist clearing from Table Mountain each morning and to watch it set every night was truly magnificent.

Room service very good and there was always seating available in the library/lounge for residents to have a night cap.

Staff discrete but on the ball.

5 of 5  Exceptional service!, A TripAdvisor Member, Turin, Italy, April 29, 2008

The service here was incredible. All you had to do was stand in the reception area and a conceirge would appear and asked how they could help. We used them extensively and they were very knowledgeble. It was a great service also to receive free transport (in a fancy 7 series -- if I remember well- BMW) to all places in a certain km radius. You can purchase table mountain tickets directly from the hotel - good to save the queue! We also took advantage of the complementary transport to the local Virgin Active club.

Make sure you go the the restaurant 'Gold' - all african cuisine with a show. Very memorable.

Also loved the waffles made to order at breakfast -- -yum!

Worth every penny. First class service. Free limo takes you site seeing or out at night to restaurants. Stayed for only 2 nights whilst touring S.A. but a memorable experience.

5 of 5  Best Hotel Stay Ever, A TripAdvisor Member, London, United Kingdom, March 16, 2008

I stayed at the Cape Grace for 7 nights at the start of March. It was probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in and had the most personal service. I had a beautiful room looking at Table Mountain. The service was truly outstanding. When I mentioned that I had a sore head after travelling without any suggestion I had some paracetamol and water handed to me to help me! Room service, the quality of food, the range of drinks and the high calibre of the most caring staff made this a really outstanding home away from home. I so enjoyed the hotel. The best part was probably that the room was so well insulated that it was completely noise free all night despite being down on the Waterfront. I haven't slept so well in a long time.

5 of 5  Outstanding !, A TripAdvisor Member, Maidstone, UK, February 11, 2008

My wife, 2 1/2 year son and I stayed at the Cape Grace for 9 nights in January/February 2008. Simply put, it was outstanding in every respect.

The hotel is ideally located within 2 minutes walk of the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, yet is far enough away to be peaceful.

Staff at the hotel were exceptional welcoming but not overly intrusive. They made our son feel very welcome indeed with little gifts each day and a departure present.

I'd recommend requesting a room with a balcony and view of Table Mountain - we enjoyed sitting out on this of an evening.

Other than the pool and restaurant we didn't avail ourselves of all of the hotel's facilities, so cannot comment on the Spa etc. Breakfast was very good with a wide selection of dishes. We ate in the main restaurant (OneWaterfront) once and it was very good. The hotel also has a bar (Bascule) which has a relaxed atmosphere.

The pool is ample in size and we never had problems finding sun-beds etc. Bar service around the pool was also prompt.

The hotel offers a free of charge limo service to local attractions, restaurants etc within a certain radius - this worked well for us and we had no issues securing the times we wanted to use this.

Without a doubt this has to be one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. We will definitely be returning !

5 of 5  Superb, A TripAdvisor Member, London, UK, January 4, 2008

Stayed for 5 nights in total over Xmas and New Year 2007/8. Very well positioned for Cape Town 's lively waterfront. Superior room with balcony (overlooking Table Mt.) was excellent. Pool & poolside dining v. good. Restaurant top quality and hotel staff friendly and helpful. We would not hesitate to stay there again.

4 of 5  This is near perfect - but the pool area is a big let down, A TripAdvisor Member, London, April 4, 2009

Great service, rooms that are worthy of a 5 star hotel and the car service is fantastic (we stayed over Christmas and NY and even then managed to book the car service for most nights - but you need to do this as soon as you arrive). But the pool area is lousy - way too small for the number of rooms and given the location of the hotel (nowhere near the beach). You had to get down there early to grab a lounger (which really is unacceptable given the price of the Cape Grace) and on one occasion I'd gone back to my room for a few minutes only to find that on my return to the pool one of the staff had removed my stuff from the lounger and given it to someone else! In short, if you plan to spend all your time sightseeing you won't have any complaints - but if you plan to sunbathe and swim I would look elsewhere.

4 of 5  Great hotel...as long as your room is in the right position..., A TripAdvisor Member, London, England, March 10, 2009

The Cape Grace was exactly what we wanted from our Cape Town hotel - fantastic position, beautiful rooms, excellent concierge and a fantastic car service which saves you getting taxis and makes negotiating Cape Town so much easier. But, you have to make sure when you book the hotel that your room is located on the Table Mountain side and not the other. We were initially facing the other way and there are shipping trawlers outside which absolutely stink! We couldn't bear to go on to our balcony and had to ask for a change of rooms which the hotel was happy to oblige with.

Also we found the pool service very poor. No one ever offered us food or drink and the towels from the last people were never removed. In a 5 star hotel, it shouldnt be a 'do it yourself' job. On the upside though, when we did complain, the staff were incredibly courteous and dealt with the problem immediately.

So despite our few problems, we really did enjoy our stay and would return.

4 of 5  Great 5 star hotel in great location, A TripAdvisor Member, Bath, United Kingdom, March 8, 2009

We had two nights in the Cape Grace at the start of our holiday in Cape Town before we went off on our wine tour. It is an excellent 5 star hotel with friendly and efficient staff. We had a luxury roof top room with great views of Table Mountain and Signal Hill. The room was very well appointed with everything you could possibly want. We enjoyed the pool and had lunch in the restaurant which was great. We were a little disappointed with the breakfast, the cooked selection we had could have been better. The car service is excellent and took us to the cable car for Table Mountain, they even supplied tickets so we didn't have to queue. The location of the Cape Grace couldn't be better right next to the V&A Waterfront with plenty of restaurants and shops to choose. Everything about the Cape Grace was excellent except that it is a little pricey!

4 of 5  Great service, great location, A TripAdvisor Member, Zurich, Switzerland, December 22, 2008

Overall we highly enjoyed our time at this recently renovated hotel. We would recommend it for Cape Town stays

Location: at the V&A waterfront it is at 5 min walking distance from many shops and various restaurants (the latter rather average and touristy).

Room: we got upgraded to a very nice rooftop luxury room (402) with a small terrace with incredible views on Table Mountain and the marina. Nice bathroom, great views from the shower. We really enjoyed spending time in the room and out on the terrace, and recommend to avoid a room facing the other side of the hotel.

Service: overall outstanding, especially from the concierge team. The hotel car service was also impeccable and, different to other high end hotels we’ve stayed at and offered it, it is typically available if you book at least 24h in advance. There is some room for improvement for the waiters, especially some of the less experienced that serve breakfast by the pool.

Food: we had breakfast at the hotel which was of very good quality and varied.

Highlight: The views of Table Mountain, concierge service and the adjacent marina.

Worst factor: there is a dry dock a few hundred meters away and when the wind blows the wrong way, you can smell the stench while by the swimming pool and from the breakfast areas.

Very Good hotel, excelent service and great location for those willing to entertain in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

A wonderful hotel. Good rooms, great views, lovely staff, yummy food, awesome bar and nice pool. Thoroughly recommend it.

3 of 5  Good hotel but with some drawbacks, A TripAdvisor Member, london, March 17, 2009

Stayed here twice in March. Hotel itself is nice but nothing super special. Location by the waterfront is decent but only if the waterfront (tourist and shops) is what you want - going along the coast or inland is spectacular so not sure location wise what the big draw of this hotel is. The service is very good and we found all the staff to be very helpful. There was an earlier comment about not being able to get front desk people to do more than check you in etc but we didn't experience this, we found all the staff helpful and pleasant. The rooms (we had 2) were both very good - the only problem was the air conditioning that made both rooms reek of cigarette smoke. This was also mentioned in an earlier report and i'm afraid was the most disappointing aspect of the hotel. Both stays, on 2 different floors had exactly the same problem - you really couldn't have the aircon on unless you were ok with this smell. The spa was ok - again the staff were lovely and the treatments were pretty good. The ambiance was a little lacking though. We only had breakfast in the restaurant - decent but nothing fab and the room lacked atmosphere and with no view not that appealling. The pool area was the most disappointing - the pool was tiny, the staff didn't tend the empty beds (at any point in time there were loads of empty beds with rubbish on them .... empty water bottles, ashtrays etc....and it would be like this for literally hours). Ordering a drink at the pool took hours and the staff ignored the very many people that came that were NOT hotel guests (one couple came with their own beach towels and spent hours on their mobile phones joking about how they were at the Cape Grace pool for free). The restaurant which opens on to the pool is used for a lot of private functions - people at these functions use the pool terrace as spill over which again crowds out guests. Overall, I enjoyed the stay but don't think this was really 5* and definitely not as good as you can get in the Cape Town area

2 of 5  6000 RAND a night at no free wireless!!! Managmentproblem, A TripAdvisor Member, oslo, January 4, 2009

It is incredibel - we are in 2009 the hotel carge 6000 rand a night (ca 800 USD a night) - and you have to pay 100 rand for using the wireless 24 hour - also beacuse of the festivite season you have to stay for 5 night.

This is a mangment problem - they should understad that on international top hotel that Cape Grace actually is you should not need to pay for using the wireless in the room. (Businessenter downstairs is fre - but you can not use your own computer there then you have to pay.)

I will call this just grady management. all the staff is extremly nice and servicemindet. The location is nice and also the rooms.

So - just get rid of the charginging of wireless and they will get a 5-star from me.

2 of 5  So disappointed, A TripAdvisor Member, Brussels, October 8, 2008

I wanted to go back to this hotel since staying there 6 years ago. We arrived at 21.30 after travelling all day. I had booked a rooftop terrace room - the floor had just had a makeover - rooms looked lovely. Wanting just to watch a film in bed we pulled out the TV - which promptly swung back into the cabinet. 1 hour, 4 phonecalls, 1 maintenance man with a bit of blue tac and some furniture shifting "it's a design fault"later , I requested a room change. It was done, but had not been offered. Second room was as nice but the fan in the bathroom was on all the time - very loud at night. The next day after 3 requests to maintenance, I was told it was the hotel cooling system and nothing could be done - would I like to change rooms again? No. Other little things wrong - like no magnifier on shaving mirror - which wouldn't stay extended either! Not worth complaining about though, but I wonder if anyone did a quality control on the newly refurbished rooms.

Breakfast was s l o w to say the least - my two beautifully poached eggs went stone cold while I asked for toast 3 times and butter 4 times!

Finally my Prada spectacles were removed from the bedroom with the bed linen - and only returned when I missed them on return in the evening - no apology was offered. I guess I'm lucky they found them at all!

The guest book is still full of praise - maybe we were very unlucky but for 6000ZAR (500 euro) a night, I expect more than some nice antiques and a 'welcome home' from the doorman.

Is it normal for the hotel to disclaim ALL responsibility for guests property - even if due to theft by a staff member or gross negligence on the part of the hotel? How many people realise what they are signing in the register?

I have stayed at hotels for half the price with better service. Pity.

1 of 5  cape overpriced?, A TripAdvisor Member, Orange County, California, October 27, 2008

Overpriced and recently renovated.. so what? many choices in the beautiful city of Capetown, so why bother with Always: the over the top attitudes by staff with no skiils.. just my opinion.. Next time hire a hostess, or greeter, fresh out of University and ask for a reference. oh, you just did, Disneyland..

There are many other choices for lodging in the Capetown area. just my opinion.

1 of 5  CAPE Grace - CAPE DISGRACE, A TripAdvisor Member, Johannesburg SA, October 4, 2008

Have stayed at this hotel before.-, and eaten at the restaurant on many previous occasions. This has all changed. They have slid down the rating ladder from 'good' to 'shockingly bad'. Their set up is all about 'window dressing' - greeting guests by name, does not offer good solid value, and food to match. The restaurant is currently being renovated, and at present housed in their rather tired and shabby library offering lesser than mediocre food at RIP OFF prices. The portions are skimpy and unacceptable for the prices charged. Compared with the Ambassador Hotel's Salt restaurant (not 5 star), the Showroom Restaurant, 95 Keerom, The Vineyard Hotel and restaurants, and many others, the Cape Grace rates as a 'disgrace'. Priced to rip off foreign tourists - offering no value whatsoever, the hotel is dingy and tired, guest relationship is all just window dressing, 'talk' but no action.

If you want value for your money, go somewhere else.
