2 of 5  poor management, A TripAdvisor Member, Little Rock, July 10, 2007

the hotel was dirty. I am not overly neat but the breakfast room carpet looked like skid row. I found the all Mexican staff was pleasant but seemed especially helpful if you were Mexican yourself. that would explain the approx 70% Mexican visitors there unlike the much lower remainder of the island. Juan the GM was cutting them deals by giving them rooms at 50$ per night less than available at ANY website. the parking lot would only hold about 80% of the cars needed and you had to walk a distance. it was nice that the hotel was so close to the beach and the staff at breakfast tried hard.

5 of 5  Awesome!, A TripAdvisor Member, DFW, Texas, March 24, 2009

We got a great room for a low price being that it was off season. We could walk right out the back door, past the pool, and onto the beach. We loved it! In the morning there was a very nice continental breakfast that included waffles. Reminded us of Best Westerns we have stayed at. We compared prices with a few other places that night and this was the best price and by far the best choice!

5 of 5  rooms wonderful at the rate we booked, A TripAdvisor Member, north dakota, March 3, 2009

We were fortunate to book our beautiful room at $89. We talked to others who booked a week ahead and got their room at $169. We book about 6 weeks ahead. We had lousy weather, but enjoyed the very comfortable rooms and hotel with morning breakfast and happy hour.

5 of 5  La Quinta Is The BEST!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Kansas City, Missouri, September 17, 2008

We had a beautiful room off of a little hallway...so it was very quiet. Our room had a balcony with a lovely ocean view and it had a really nice sitting area. The beds were very comfortable and the entire hotel was very clean., in spite of the fact that new hallway carpets were being put down. the hotel had suffered some damage from hurricane Dolly but the repairs did not interfere with the guests' comfort and service from the cordial staff. Beach access was alittle hampered as the storm had destroyed the wooden walkway down onto the beach....but once on the beach, it was wonderful. Very clean and never crowded. The patio area is really nice with plenty of seating. Nice pool, too, though we spent all our time down on the beach. We were treated very well & were impressed by the friendliness & efficiency of the staff. We'd love to stay here again sometime soon and highly recommend this hotel.

5 of 5  Week After Spring Break, A TripAdvisor Member, San Antonio, TX, April 9, 2008

Week After Spring Break

Clean room and bedding comfortable. Nice size room with mini fridge and microwave. Easy friendly front desk. Wireless Internet was low connection. Sofa bed was uncomfortable to sit on. Housekeeping was unpredictable all week.

Other thoughts, lots of undisciplined small children due to Mexico spring break. Not enough chairs for pool area. Heavy equipment reclaiming beach was noisy. Dog friendly is a consideration due to allergy to fleabites. Never tried the continental breakfast or pool/hot tub due to the number of undisciplined small children. I would stay again just not month of March.

5 of 5  Wonderful place for relaxing on the beach, A TripAdvisor Member, Westerville, OH, February 12, 2008

This is the most northerly of the So. Padre Hotels, so walks on the beach are in the less developed area. LaQuinta has direct beach access, which is really nice, a comfortable outdoor area around the pool and patio with comfortable beach chairs which overlooks the beach. The rooms are quite large, clean and very comfortable. Many guests have dogs with them- every one we encountered was friendly, and well under control. The room was quiet, and had an outside door as well as the hallway entrance..A great place at a very reasonable price!

5 of 5  Great Location and Pet Friendly, A TripAdvisor Member, Springfield, Missouri, November 26, 2007

We booked at La Quinta over the Thanksgiving holiday, and stayed with them specifically because they allowed pets - we had the family dog with us. We arrived 3 hours early, and while a room was not immediately ready, they did have it ready with a couple of hours. The room was fine - well cleaned and fairly quiet. We noticed that several other people had their dogs (which may be a concern for people with allergies), but we rarely heard any barking. The hotel is at the far north part of the developed island, so it is bit farther from restaurants and all, but only a couple of miles.

The hotel offers a nightly happy hour with two complimentary drinks as well as nachos and popcorn. The continental breakfast was typical fare, and was usually quite busy all morning.

Access to the beach could not be better. The pool sits directly on the beach and it is only a short stroll from the room to the waves.

We stayed on the north side of the building - ground level. We saw the Gulf out the corner of the window, and had dunes immediately out the window. I would recommend a higher floor for a better view. I also noticed that the ground floor on the south side looked directly at a brick wall.

All in all, a great stay, and I we plan to stay again - especially if we bring our dog.

5 of 5  Great Vacation Place, A TripAdvisor Member, austin, September 2, 2007

Very clean, Superb location and friendly staff. Will definately be staying here again. Love your beach area.

5 of 5  Pleasant Suprise, A TripAdvisor Member, Fredericksburg, August 31, 2007

We were registered for a conference that was going to be held at the LaQuinta. We normally stay at the Holliday inn but since our conference was at LaQuinta we decided to give it a try. When we arived we were so impressed with not only the size of the rooms but how clean they were. Everyone was very friendly and made us feel right at home. We could not beleive how close we were to the beach. It was so close that my mother who is in a wheel chair and could never get to the beach at ht Holliday Inn had no problems at LaQuinta. We have found our new home on South Padre Island.

Sincerely,

Mr. Hoover

5 of 5  Wow Wow Wow Wow, A TripAdvisor Member, Brownsville TX, August 27, 2007

We were so impressed with how clean and friendly the staff and management was. We did not expect to be so close to the beach, we were litterally 100 feet away from the water. The happy hour was nice with the free drinks and free nachos. We have found our new home away from home on South Padre Island.

5 of 5  Loved this hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Oklahoma, June 11, 2007

This is the hotel to book at Padre Island! We booked a poolside room(which also overlooked the gulf) and loved it! We were able to watch our children swim from our balcony and were steps away from the beach...Everything was very clean and breakfast was great! Yes there is parking issues, and the halls are stuffy, but if that is the worst you can say for a hotel, so what! This was our first trip to Padre Island and we will definately be coming back and staying at the Laquinta again!

5 of 5  don't visit south padre island during spring break unless you are under 26!, A TripAdvisor Member, minnesota, May 2, 2007

I've stayed at LaQuinta Hotel several times in the last 4 years and it is a wonderful hotel, great value, great service, beautiful beach front and pool. There can be issues with parking, but thats common in alot of hotels.

I would not recommend visiting during spring break to any of the hotels on the Island, unless You are a college student and want the wild and craziness that goes on during spring break. Its not a time to relax and have quiet walks on the beach. That would be after spring break! (ask any local) There is a huge difference!

Its a wonderful place give it a second chance, because I'm hooked!

4 of 5  Nice place, A TripAdvisor Member, Colorado, October 23, 2008

We have stayed at La Quinta, S. Padre many times over the last four years. Our rooms have always been clean and in good condition. The staff is courteous and the maids do a good job for which they deserve a tip. Their continental breakfast gets old pretty quick if you spend more than a few days there, but it's ok. Overall, I would stay here because it is reasonable and clean. I would not stay at the Travel Lodge, as they treat customers rudely.

4 of 5  Hotel great...staff not so much!, A TripAdvisor Member, Fredericksburg, Texas, September 23, 2008

This hotel is awesome!! The location is the best. There were no parties and it seemed to be a quiet area of the beach instead of in the middle of SPI. The beds were comfortable and the room was in perfect shape. We had a great view of the pool area as well as an ocean view, which we especially loved at night. The breakfast was great with Texas shaped waffles. There were delicious muffins, cereal, juice, coffee, bagels and doughnuts. The staff were not very friendly when we checked in, but we were so happy about the room (as we had read some bad reviews about animal smell), but we could care less once we saw the room and view, figuring we would not need to get in contact with the staff until checkout. This was my four year old son's first trip to the beach and he was loving it until he got stung by a man o' war. As my son is screaming his head off, I tried to get some information from the front desk as to what to put on it. The guy behind the counter casually walked to the back room and brought me some lotion and told me that that was all he had. Then after giving him somewhat of a strange look, he told me that mustard might work and that it was located at the opposite end of the hotel. After running to the cafe, the gentleman in there could have cared less that my son was hurting. Needless to say, none of that worked and we had to take care of it in other ways. We do intend to go back, but DO NOT EXPECT THE STAFF TO HELP YOU IN ANY WAY!!! Even free happy hour is ruined by the unhappy staff that are giving you the bottom of the barrel items. Shouldn't this be a benefit to your stay as stated?? Maybe they should consider hiring some new staff as that would make everyones stay better.

4 of 5  Great for the Price, A TripAdvisor Member, Texas, April 23, 2008

Week after spring break -A very nice hotel for the price ($59 a night mid-week). While the rooms did show some wear and tear, overall they were clean and very comfortable. Nice balcony you can see the ocean from or pay more and get a room that overlooks beach and pool area. Hotel personnel very efficient. Had minor problems that were all addressed immediately. Pool was nice. Hot tub was nice the first night but wasn't maintained. Water was very dirty by the weekend. Wireless internet connection was decent. Breakfast area good. BEST thing for us is that they allow dogs and we weren't charged extra for them - only a damage deposit. For dog lovers, this is the place to be. Environmental work on the beach not a problem.

4 of 5  Great 1 night stay, A TripAdvisor Member, Vidor, April 22, 2008

We went to golf school for 3 days so it was nice to come to a hotel with a jacuzzi tub in it--- and the bed was comfortable & soft. My only complaint is that the sheets had started to "pill" and so were a bit scratchy. Otherwise- , hey, James Kelley --- you did a wonderful rennovation on this hotel!!! Good breakfast --- good beach access and for watching the sun come up-- you can't BUY a better location!!

4 of 5  Decent place to stay a few days on South Padre Island, A TripAdvisor Member, Austin, Texas, January 1, 2008

We rented a ground floor jacuzzi room over the Christmas holidays. We found the room to be spacious and clean. The room came with a microwave, a small refridgerator, couch, a couple of chairs and a very comfortable king size bed.

We were very pleased with nearly everything the hotel had to offer. The check-in and check-out were a breeze and we always found the staff to be pleasant, smiling and helpful.

The continental breakfast was well stocked and always had quite the crowd and there were several members of the staff always making sure that no one ran out of food to eat.

We had a minor plumbing problem that was immediately taken care of by the hotel staff.

They had several computers for guests to use, but they had connectivity issues while we were there and no one was able to use the computers La Quinta did provide. Personal computers worked just fine.

There is a fitness room on site for those that want a fitness workout.

There was a Happy Hour each nite out by the pool which offered two free beers or wine to each guest, as well as free popcorn and nachos with cheese.

The Gulf was only a few steps from the back of the property.

The jacuzzi in the room was a wonderful way to relax at the end of a long day in South Padre Island.

About the only thing I feel I should bring to people's attention is this hotel is very pet friendly. Dogs, dogs, dogs, everywhere. Pets don't bother me in the least, but I was surprised by how many dogs I saw running up and down the halls with their owners in tow on their leashes. The pets didn't bother me, but if you have an allergy to pet hair, you may want to reconsider staying here. I never detected the odor of previous pets in our room.

In closing, I would recommend this hotel to others as well as return to stay here, again. We had an extremely good deal by booking directly to the hotel and we really felt we got a very good value for what we were charged. La Quinta can consider us satisfied customers.

4 of 5  Bring your dog(s) and your barbecue!, A TripAdvisor Member, Houston, TX, September 11, 2007

I booked this particular hotel for several reasons, mainly (1) the price was great, (2) it was directly on the beach, and (3) it is a major hotel chain. I had read some reviews about other "locally owned and operated" hotels which didn't seem to get many favorable comments. You can seldom go wrong with a chain hotel.

I strategically planned my trip for after Labor Day when the kids are back in school, the crowds are gone and the prices are down.

THE CHECK-IN STAFF was friendly and efficient, and I was thrilled with my room. I was on the third floor with the sunrise on one side and the sunsets on the other.

COMPLIMENTARY HAPPY HOUR is limited to wine (from a box,) beer and soft drinks, along with popcorn and chips/queso. I thought it was very nice of them to offer this, but we only took advantage of it the first night. Free boxed wine was not worth the wait in line. We bought our own spirits down the street and served as our own bartenders in our room and took our cocktails down to the pool (we bought two large plastic cups at the store prior to arriving.)

THE BEST FEATURE OF THIS HOTEL: It's located right on the beach. Out the door of the hotel, past the pool, onto the beach. That fast. We checked out some other "beach front" hotels and yes they were on the beach, but it felt like you needed to take a short plane ride to get to the beach from the hotel. One major hotel was 500 yards from the beach, yet it was "beach front." The La Quinta gets top scores from us for beach-proximity.

ARRIVE EARLY FOR FREE BREAKFAST. The hotel offers complimentary continental breakfast including waffles. I went down at 9:30 a.m. and there was no place to sit, and I didn't feel like hauling my food out to the pool just in case there was no seating out there either. But the food sure looked good!

PARKING WAS LESS-THAN-CONVENIENT. The parking lot was being completely re-done so there was less parking available than usual (although the security guard made sure to point out that parking for the employees was readily available right by the entrance to the hotel - not a nice business practice, and not a smart thing for an employee to disclose.) They have parking next to the hotel in a weed-filled lot. It's about 100 yards from the entrance to the hotel. Once this issue is resolved, they will probably have ample parking. But it was a little frustrating to return each night around midnight, circle the parking lot, exit the property, park next door, and then walk back. *** The night clerk at the hotel said, "Park in the field next door and I'll come and get you in the golf cart." We parked, and saw him come out of the hotel and go to the golf cart. Then he turned around and went back to the hotel. After a few minutes we headed back to the hotel on foot, and when we asked the night clerk why he didn't come and get us, he said, "The golf cart wouldn't start." At least he could have walked to our car and told us. But once the parking lot is complete, I don't foresee this issue again.

HOUSEKEEPING did a good job, although the coffee pot was never cleaned out so we had to do that every morning ourselves. Not a huge issue.

THIS HOTEL IS PET FRIENDLY: In fact, we began to think that there must've been a big discount for bringing a pet because everyone seemed to have one. I can understand a few people bringing their dogs, but there were 23 different dogs that we counted (some people had more than one.) And the dogs would bark in their rooms in the morning. That's not the hotel's fault that the dogs are noisy, but keep this in mind when you make a reservation. If you have pets, bring them along. If you don't like pets or you don't like the possibility that fleas will be in your room upon check-in, just remember this place is pet friendly.

THIS HOTEL IS BARBECUE FRIENDLY: We were a little surprised at the number of people who brought their own hibatchi portable barbecue and briquettes who were barbecuing by the pool. I didn't think it said much about the clientel. I booked a bargain hotel so I could spend more on nice dinners at the recommended restaurants..... many of the hotel guests stocked up on groceries before checking in. They were out by the pool every night flipping burgers and weenies.

I WOULD STAY HERE AGAIN without question. I foresee a completed parking lot in the future, and that was my biggest complaint. The price, the location and the reputation make this one of the best buys on the island.

4 of 5  Had a good time!, A TripAdvisor Member, Houston, Texas, September 3, 2007

We just returned from S. Padre, where we stayed at La Quinta.

At first, the location seemed a little out of the way of things, but that perception changed. The location is FANTASTIC! It's not in the midst of the other hotels and resorts, so the beach remains uncrowded. I enjoyed being one of only a handful of people out and about.

We had a 4th floor room with pool view, which meant we had an excellent view of the ocean. The first thing we did each morning upon waking was go stand on the balcony and stare at the waves. Very relaxing. The pool area was usually pretty crowded but mostly with kids. The hotel is family friendly. It's also pooch friendly; several guests had dogs.

The hotel staff was friendly. Rooms were clean. My only complaint - and this is NOT unique to La Quinta by any stretch of the imagination so I'm not really holding it against them - is that the hallways smelled a bit like.... pee. For some reason, most lower budget hotels I've been in have hallways that smell a bit like pee. How do you know you're in a 2-star hotel? Take a whiff. I suppose it could have something to do with the canine guests, but it's probably more likely related to humidity (or drunk spring breakers and other hard partiers whose potty training is often less reliable than that of man's best friend). To clarify, the rooms did not have this aroma. It's only in the hallways.

Overall, I'd say the place is above average due to the views and beach access. I'd stay there again.

4 of 5  First time to visit this area, A TripAdvisor Member, Nashville, Tennessee, July 7, 2007

My husband and I stayed here for a three night quick getaway for my birthday. We enjoyed ourselves. King room was clean and spacious. Had a jacuzzi tub in the room. Continental type breakfast was included and the waffles were good! Large pool and deck area with walkway to the beach. There were free soft drinks and popcorn served poolside (adult beverage for a price).

The property sits perpendicular to the beach so most rooms are a side view of the ocean from a balcony or small porch area which is accessed by a french door. Floors three and above would be most desireable for an actual view if not in an exactly facing oceanfront room .

Only two cons to our stay. Our room was on the first floor just off the hallway running from the front desk area to the pool, so it was a high traffic area with noise. All rooms have interior entrances. Parking can be a pain because of how the property is situated. You could end up parking several yards from the front door.

I would stay here again.

4 of 5  Memorial Day Week, A TripAdvisor Member, San Antonio, June 14, 2007

Once again another nice stay. Stayed on the 1st floor with a pool and ocean view and loved it. Can be a little noisy at times, but the view made it worth while. The only bad part was our wireless internet never worked the 4 days we were there. Loved it and looking foward to going back in August.

4 of 5  Enjoyable La Quinta, A TripAdvisor Member, San Marcos, Texas, June 12, 2007

My husband and I stayed at La Quinta for our honeymoon from June 4th-6th. South Padre is great this time of year. The La Quinta is an excellent hotel once you get past the front desk. The front desk people are awful. Our room was pretty basic. The beds were comfy and the room was clean. The view was spectacular! We had an ocean view and it really was an ocean view. The restroom is big enough for all your necessities, and the shower had enough power to wash off the sunscreen and sand. They do have a happy hour from 5-6 which offers 2 drinks per adult. Happy hour means draft beer and wine out of a box. The hotel allows you to take a cooler, so pack your own drinks and snacks. At the hotel snack bar, it is $3.00 a beer. The parking at the hotel isn't the best, but we ate out for dinner and always found a parking on our return. The breakfast is your usual continental breakfast, but worked out well for us. Everything was fresh. Here's a handy tip: book your dolphin watch, snorkeling, and other South Padre excursions through the hotel. The hotel offers a discount on the excursions if you are staying with them. I recommend the sunset cruise/dolphin watch. The hotel kept the outside areas clean as well as the beach. The pool is also kept clean. We stayed on the 3rd floor and found that it was a great choice. I recommend NOT staying on the 1st floor because you have everyone walking through and it is very hot since they have two main entrances on the 1st floor. Overall, I'm glad we chose the La Quinta for our honeymoon, we can't wait to go back!

4 of 5  Very Nice., A TripAdvisor Member, Kingsport, Tennessee USA, June 8, 2007

This motel was on the beach, spacious rooms and clean.. Looks to be a pretty new motel. Its on the far end of the island so has more room to walk the beach without being crowded by the other motels. Yet you can drive in to restaurants easily in a few minutes. (Its a small island). Happy hour is OK, don't stay here for that reason. Its a couple of beers or boxed wine, but still fun. Breakfast is decent, the usual you might find at most motels providing them. Overall, I felt this was great value and I'd definitely stay again.

3 of 5  Dont believe everything you read, A TripAdvisor Member, Dallas, June 5, 2009

For some reason I think those last two reviews are over exaggerated. I plan on staying here for the Forth and I just pray its not as bad as these folks are saying. I really do think they are liars tho.

3 of 5  good hotel-but busy, A TripAdvisor Member, Roanoke,Texas, July 6, 2008

we were at the La Quinta South Padre Island over the first weekend in july and we found it to be an adequate hotel. It was busy,I mean busy too,not just weekend busy,For the amount of business the hotel was experiencing the weekend we were there,I thought the staff was professional and courteous.we had the curtain that covered the window in the back door fall and the maintenance representative at the hotel fixed the problem promptly...Other than that we had no problems with the rooms themselves..There were fresh-made waffles every morning for breakfast along with the normal continental breakfast fare,I thought this was a nice touch..the happy hour from 5 to 6 is for real too, just dont expect the world. You get two free drinks, per person per day,I didnt take advantage of this, but I did take advantage of the free chips and hot sauce. Please let me say that my daughter and I were really parched from being on the beach all day and the guy serving the complimentary beer and wine during the hapy hour gave us free sodas.I thought this was good service on his part..he also makes a mean Pina Colada, according to my wife.We enjoyed the hotel,it wasnt really far from everything like it looks from internet photos if you have a car.But if you are looking to walk to dinner and to the souvenir shops, you might try a property farther south closer to the causeway..We would stay here again and we would recommend this hotel to our friends and family too...In addition,we would tell them that if they go during the summer, it will be busy as it is a less expensive property directly on the beach and expect lines at the waffle station during breakfast....Get there before 8:30 am and you wont have to stand in line by the way..We found the front desk staff to be above average also.....This hotel was pet-friendly,which was different, but I saw no "problems" as a result of the pets,It was a little different to see the pets being led around in the hallways....I hope this helps someone and have a happy vacation....

3 of 5  Not sure if we would stay again, A TripAdvisor Member, ontario, March 13, 2008

Just came back from our trip to South Padre. Stayed at La Quinta

for one night on Sun. March 9th. We knew it was the start of spring break and there would be lots of vacationing young people so we had a bit of a concern of noisy , partying kids.

The weather was quite cool so I think it put a bit of a damper on the partying. We were awaken to noisy people only a couple of times. We reserved a king jacuzzi suite and were a bit disappointed when there wasn't enough hot water to fill the tub. My husband called maintenance and the guy was there in no time but he didn't really speak much english. He tried to adjust something in the plumbing ( not sure if he did anything) so we just waited for the water to heat up. As I walked into the room something didn't feel right or look right to me about the bed. Before I was to jump in about 10 p.m. I turned over the pillows to find a hair between them. I pulled back the top sheet and down at the bottom between the sheets was all kinds of hair. There was no way I was sleeping in that bed. So off my hubby goes down to the desk, no manager in, no housekkeeping at that time of night so back he comes with clean sheets in hand. So yup we changed the bedding. He talked with the manager in a.m. and she took 25% off our bill and said she would review with maid.

2 of 5  Not so great, A TripAdvisor Member, Tulsa, OK, November 17, 2008

Booked this stay for Forth of July weekend. was suprised at the $250/night rate off the bat for a run down La Quinta. Parking was a bit crowded and had to get back to hotel early or you would have a good walk. Check in was easy and friendly. Room was very basic - definately nothing special. Until I saw a roach on the bathroom towell getting out of the shower. And another one in the hall on the acitivity pamphlets. Room service was good. The happy hour was over crowded and the pool area completely crazy and packed. Wouldn't use the pool - way too many people. The beach was very simple - not much too it. No real pretty sandy beaches to hang out on. From the water to the grassy dunes for the most part. Breakfast was actually tasty after standing in line for a good 20 minutes to get the waffle. The lobby/dining area was way overcrowded. May have just been the weekend too. The second morning I just went down and got food and brought it up to avoid the masses. Hotel located at the very end of the island, good for non crowded beaches and more secluded. Overall the hotel was very average...but for that rate I was very disappointed. I haven't been to Padre in years and with the overall condition of beaches and hotel I won't be going back.

2 of 5  Not as good as adverised., A TripAdvisor Member, Houston, TX, August 31, 2008

Stayed 21st thru 24th Aug, booked 3 rooms. This motel is pet friendly. There was a musty smell in the downstairs hallway. The rooms were comfortable & clean, but were in need of more than just a coat of paint. The elevator permit had expired in Oct 2007. We booked the rooms 5 mths in advance & were givien good rates, w/confirmation number. We called 1 week before our arrival & were told our rate was now $215.00/room/night. When we quoted the confiramtion number we were told that in order to rcv the quoted rates of $75.00/room/night we would have to have coupons for all 3 rooms, my wife spent 1/2 a day obtaining 3 valid coupons. When we checked-in, no coupons were required. Most of the staff were helpfull & courteous, 2 on the front desk required a lesson in "how to be courteous". The breakfast was good, but the area is too small for the amount of guests. If you are going to pay the summer rates, check other motels first.

Try Amberjacks & Jesse's (Mexican) on SPadre & Gabriella's (Italian) in P Isabel. All had good svc & food.

2 of 5  LaQuinta Inn--needs some serious remodeling and cleaning!, A TripAdvisor Member, Florida, July 24, 2008

We always try to stay at LaQuinta because we travel with our dogs a lot. This LaQuinta looks so nice from the outside but in the upstairs hallways you can smell cat urine so strongly that it will make you sick! They have obviously put some time and money into different upgrades and remodeling but need to do a lot more. Eventually our room started to smell better after running the A/C on high constantly. The pool was always very crowded and it's too small for such a large hotel. The breakfast was always stocked well but the breakfast area was so small that after 8 am there was standing room only with huge crowds and lines!

On a positive note, the beach is right there just steps away and there are showers available to use before going back into the hotel. That made it so nice and convenient especially since we were traveling with young children.

Don't expect to get your room cleaned up at all until after 3 or 4 pm, which is usually the time you're getting back in from a day on the beach!

I was glad to have my dogs with me but this LaQuinta does not meet up to the standards that most LaQuintas do. I hope they can make changes soon so as not to spoil their name!

2 of 5  Great Location, everything else- not so great., A TripAdvisor Member, Texas, June 11, 2008

We stayed for 6 days. The room was not in the best of condition. The front door was damaged, it was really hard to close. The balcony door would not close, the doorknob was broken. The closet did not have a door. The beds and sofa were not very comfortable at all. The internet NEVER worked. A maintenance person was sent twice and made attempts to repair it to no avail. So then he just gave up and never came back. The room was not in the best of shape or the most comfortable, but the location and views were absolutely wonderful. The location was very nice because we could just take the elevator down and walk right onto the beach. They also have little showers right past the pool by the beach for your feet or your body. Nice! Plus in the front of the hotel, you can get discounted tickets to just about anything on the island. The hotel is on the far end of the island and you have to drive a bit into town where everything is. Overall we didn't get a comfortable room, but we got a great location.

2 of 5  Kinda gross, A TripAdvisor Member, Houston, May 2, 2008

We got to the hotel and had to wait in line for an hour only for them to tell us our room wasn't ready because high school kids had terrorized it the night before. We showed up right at arrival time and didn't get a room until 6 hours later when we had payed to check in at 3pm. Other things that bothered me, we were put in a handicapped room and their was feces splattered in the toilet. I saw a huge garbage bag dripping with nasty water they had just thrown into one of the hotel cribs..BABIES SLEEP IN! That's just gross.

2 of 5  Good price, need improve the cleaning of the rooms and spa., A TripAdvisor Member, Monterrey, Mexico, December 20, 2007

We went to this hotel during our spring-break and we choose it for their accesible price, even for a suite with jacuzzi, this is one of the few hotels that have direct access to the beach in the island, and their location, away from the hotel strip invites to relax.

The good points of the hotel are that their rooms are wide and comfortable, their pool has adecuate size and they have Happy Hour in the afternoons, they give you drinks (wine, beer and coke) and nachos. The hotel has a good beach area, although something reduced, and its very comfortable to walk in the beach at night.

What I don't like of this hotel went the service to the room, mainly the cleaning of the same, was not made with care. Also the spa water was very dirty and it was not seen that they made something to clean it. Also the water of the pool was very cold and the climate was tempered, for that reason, one pool with heated water had been ideal.

Even so, we enjoy our stay in this hotel, and we would return, only to see if they have improved.

2 of 5  Location great, service mediocre, A TripAdvisor Member, San Antonio, Texas, October 17, 2007

The most important part of a beach vacation is location and the La Quinta does have that. Its end location provided a level of privacy not found at some of the other beach locations. However, and this is a big however, the location does not mediate their customer service--the worst I have ever experienced on SPI, even worse than the mediocre level of customer service found at your typical La Quinta. This property advertises itself as a “resort”…beach location, free breakfast, and a cheap beer box wine “happy hour” does not a resort make. The only beach service which the city of SPI allows to service the La Quinta due to a new beach permit policy elected to stop providing service because of the “slow” season. We had to resort to having a beach service provide us umbrella and chairs if front of an adjoining hotel approximately 200 yards away. The hotel staff was not even aware of how guest could get beach equipment and they weren’t aware that the service had stopped. When I advised the on-duty manager about this she said, “Oh, that might be a problem, I don’t know if we’ll be able to fix that.” Well, I can fix it—book at the Sheraton!

2 of 5  Overrated -however worth a second stay, A TripAdvisor Member, Texas, October 13, 2007

The Laquinta South Padre Island "Resort" advertises itself as a new hotel - new maybe a couple of years ago, but it is clearly showing it's age. It is important to acknowledge that a hotel on the beach can get some heavy use, and this is probably the case with this hotel, but it is not NEW so don't expect it. In addition, some shoddy construction detracts from the overall feel (minor point).

The pro's- and there are quite a few -- right on the beach, balcony's with gulf view, nice sized rooms (we had 2 queen beds with sofa) fridge and micro, nice breakfast area.

Con's --none really except as mentioned above.

Note about the gulf view rooms - we considered it, boy are we glad we didn't pay the extra $$ - it is a pool view/cabana room more than a gulf view , and the pool area was very noisy while we were there - we think the standard rooms were just fine.

2 of 5  Doubt if there will be a return trip, A TripAdvisor Member, San Antonio, Texas, August 15, 2007

Stayed at this property a few months ago and what a difference a few months can make. The hotel is probably not more than three years old but you would never know it. Very worn down and not kept up. Loose bricks in the walkway, filthy, filthy pool, dirty carpet. If you want a place that is right on the beach, this place is for you. But if you want a clean, well-maintained hotel, go somewhere else.

2 of 5  Hit or Miss there are better options, A TripAdvisor Member, Austin, Texas, July 8, 2007

This hotel is right on the beach, and is probably the most affordable “new” property on the island. I think the hotel is less than 2 years old. Walking distance to the beach is very easy and short, compared with other hotels. The service is horrible hands down. The front desk staff is not very nice or attentive and always came off as bothered probably because they are always trying to solve management and facility problems (more on that later in the review). Overall this is a hit or miss place and I would probably not stay here again, as the Radisson or Sheraton are your better options.

Facility in general:

Although new, the developer definitely cheeped out with the quality of construction, which has lead to many problems and maintenance nightmares. There are two VERY VERY slow hydraulic elevators. The center elevator also serves as the house-keeping elevator so you stop at every floor to let a staff person in thru the back elevator door. The one on the east end is quicker because it is only used by the guests. There are icemakers on all four floors, but only one was working at the time, and was usually empty. Washing machines were broken on the third floor and 4th floor hallway AC was out of order and HOT. Parking is difficult and although there is a large long parking lot, when the hotel is full you have to park in the fire lane. The parking lot is very long making your haul to the room very cumbersome, although they do have a golf cart to shuttle people to and from the front door. The breakfast area is spacious and has an okay offering of foods. I would recommend getting there before 9:00 as this seems to be the busy time and all tables are taken, even the overflow spaces.

Rooms:

The rooms were nice in appearance mostly because they are new. Try and request a room on the north side of the building as these rooms have way better views of the ocean. I originally started out on the south side of the building, which overlooks a 1960’s nasty looking building. I was then moved to a room on the north side which had great views. The balconies are very shallow and hard to navigate. Each balcony has 2 cheap plastic chairs which had broken backs. The balcony doors are hard to lock, mostly because the strike plates are rusted and the doors are cheap. The beds are horrible and flatten to 1/3 their original size when you lay down. The pillows are cheap and provide no support and in my opinion need to be replaced. During my first night the AC system was leaking condensate water onto the floor and it smelled like dank mold, fortunately I was moved then next day. Also 3 light bulbs were out and this made the room dark at night. Being there with two other families they had similar problems with their rooms; broken patio chairs, ceiling fan did not work at all, phones did not work, sink drain stopped up. This place really needs a maintenance overhaul if you know what I mean.

Pool area and Snack Bar:

The pool area is on par with other hotels on the island. Small pool, but good for a La Quinta. All pool furniture is PVC tubing and they are shaky and some were broken and needed to be thrown away. The pool area has a snack bar that serves hot dogs, nachos, beer, soda and ice cream bars, this was a nice feature. The pool area does have a fence but the locks on the gates did not work very well.

Beach:

Access to the beach is easy and is probably the best part about this hotel. The sand was great and had many seashells. Since you are positioned at the end of all the hotel development, the crowds are less and leaves a lot of room to spread out. There are umbrella and beach chair rentals, I think operated by someone other than La Quinta. The cost is $25 per day for one umbrella and two lounge chairs

Summary:

In my mind, the hotel developer took a joe-blow anywhere La Quinta building and dropped it on the beach. They failed to realize that beach hotels get a lot more use and abuse than a hotel on any old interstate and is shows. Because of the poor service and continual facility problems I would not stay here again. I wasted a lot of time at the front desk and waiting for maintenance people which detracted from my vacation. There are better options on the island for beachfront lodging.

2 of 5  NEVER AGAIN WILL WE STAY HERE, A TripAdvisor Member, texas, April 17, 2007

We usually stay at the Sheraton, (which I highly recommend),

but this visit we stayed at the La Quinta, which was a BIG mistake, and will never do it again. We tried to check in at 2:30, 3:00, 3:30 , and finally got our room by 4:00pm,, maids were running late , or some excuse like that. The people in front of me, were given wrong room type they requested, so there were a few upset people at front desk. When we got up to room, we saw a plastic white bag sticking out from under couch, and I left it there to see if maids would get it...in four days, it stayed there.

The deodorizer in the room after they cleaned was so overpowering, our eyes watered when we went in. On the last night, we came in to find a pillow thrown on the desk, not even put on bed when they made it up. The sheets had a black stain on therm, they never changed the sheets in 4 days, we checked the stain was still on the same sheets. When we would leave the room and walk to evelvators, the hallways were soooo hot, you were sweating before even making it to lobby. also, the hallways were always dirty with trash, bits of paper, trash bags laying at the end of hallway, roll a way beds up against the wall for 3 days . The parking was the worse, cars were taking up two spaces and the hotel was not even fixing that problem, there must of been 6 cars doing that, so parking was limited, the hotel was sold out.

The continental breakfast was okay, but the seating was the worst, too many people and not enough tables. No patrol over how late kids stayed in pool at night, so if you wanted to sleep, the noise would keep you awake, or the running up and down the halls by the kids. Terrible, Terrible experience, and will not stay here again,,,will go back to the peaceful luxury of the Sheraton. Definitely not here at the LaQuinta, and I suggest you do the same, It's higher in price , but well worth it, believe me !!!!

1 of 5  Filthy, Roach-infested dump, A TripAdvisor Member, Texas, May 27, 2009

Went there for business. Walked in the front door and a man was asleep stretched across the only lobby sofa, directly in front of the main desk. I should have taken that as a bad sign. Check-in was OK. Got to my room and all appeared OK except for someone's trash left on my balcony.

I understand my room was recently "remodeled" and it did have a new toilet , coffee maker and fridge.

The carpet was filthy and sticky. During the night, I felt something crawling on my arm. I turned on the lamp and found roaches all over my bed and pillow. I went into the bathroom and found roaches in the tub, on the counter and all over the towels. I opened the cabinet where the fridge and micro were and found the cabinet full of roaches. I mean FULL, at least 25 or 30. Had it not been 3 am, I would have left immediately. I have stayed in cheap hotels from Frankfurt Germany to Quito Ecuador and never had a room as disgusting as this.

1 of 5  Terribly Disappointing, A TripAdvisor Member, New York City, November 3, 2008

I booked this place based on the positive reviews and it turned out to be a terrible disappointment. The place smelled musty, it was run down, and the rooms were very worn. The swimming pool was small and filled with lots of screaming children. This place is a motel - NOT a hotel. The lack of service one expects at a hotel is notably absent. This property is in dire need of remodeling. If you are looking for upscale accomodations, this is not the place - try the Radison or the Sheraton. On the other hand, if you have kids, and just want a place to throw your bags down, and let them run amok, and you don't care about sleeping on a worn out bed and can ignore the "smell" then you may like this place - though they charge way too much $$$ for this.

1 of 5  Billing Nightmares!, A TripAdvisor Member, dfw, August 25, 2008

Made a reservation for my daughter and her friends on Travelocity.com. upon arrival the clerk told my daughter she did NOT have a prepaid room and that she would have to pay. When I contacted the hotel later, the manager refused to credit the extra charge saying that my daughter stayed in 2 rooms which was not true. I was forced to dispute the charges. Luckily I contacted Travelocity and they were nice enough to credit their charges even though they were not at fault.

Beware of prepaid bookings to this hotel because their customer service is horrible.

There are much better places to stay in South Padre.

1 of 5  View the hotel before accepting a room, A TripAdvisor Member, TX, August 4, 2008

We decided to make reservations at the hotel based on the positive reviews from this website. When we arrived at the hotel, we found it NOT to be as described. It smelled horrible, was not clean, etc; so we bought lysol to endure the odor until we could check out the next day. We wanted to check out immediately but would have lost our money. Since we gave notice that night that we wanted to cancel the rest of our reservation, no other charges were incurred. However, others who decided to wait until the next morning to cancel due to the horrible environment of the hotel still had to pay another night's charge for cancelling.

View before buying a night there.

1 of 5  Very disappointed..., A TripAdvisor Member, San Antonio, July 11, 2008

I booked the room for my family well in advance for the 4th of July weekend. I was told that the room WAS oceanfront as I requested and called to confirm weekly. When we arrived, we were given a room near a facility closet. The "oceanfront" view was visible IF you hung yourself over the balcony. The windows leaked water, the bed ruffles were melted/burnt with holes all around it, the bathroom smelled horrible and the door did not have a security bolt. I went immediately to the front desk and was told in a very rude tone that the rooms were booked. Period. I went back several times to change rooms but not once could move. We checked out a day early but was also told that their policy was not the same as their corporate policy for cancellation. I explained again about the room and even made mention that we stayed although it rained the entire weekend and could not stay another night in the nasty room. The attitude given to me and my family was more that we inconvenienced them and nothing more. I am saddened and disappointed and would NOT recommend this hotel due to our recent experience. Not only was our room nasty, but the hallway to our room was dirty and I constantly picked up trash coming out or going into our room.

1 of 5  Very Disappointing, A TripAdvisor Member, Lawrence, July 11, 2008

This is definitely not what is shown on the internet. The staff was great and very helpful. However, we stayed one night and left. We met another family that checked into their room and left immediately. The place was very busy. The pool and hot tub were so crowded we were unable to use them. They are too small for the size of the hotel. The rooms show a lot of wear. There was actual mold on the shower mat. The exhaust fan was so loud you couldn't talk over it. We didn't want to touch anything. Unless this gets a total remodel, including an additional, or larger, swimming pool and hot tub, we would never stay here again.

1 of 5  Like staying in a frat house, A TripAdvisor Member, Texas, July 6, 2008

To give my family a treat, I decided to spend more on a "family suite" and just stay fewer days. With high hopes, we checked into the La Quinta. To begin with, the parking was ridiculous. The property is located on a long narrow strip. If you are unlucky (and we always were), you will get a space at the far end of the parking lot. It is uphill to the lobby. The parking was extremely crowded. I observed many families showing up with swim gear and no parking permits, passing through the hotel to use the beach access.

Next, check in was a long process. There was a long line and the lobby was hot due to the frequent opening of the lobby doors.

The worst part was the room. The kids opened the door with great anticipation.....and it was like entering a frat house. the front room had the oddest furniture placement. There were holes in the wall, and the "kitchen" refridgerator hit one of the beds in the "family suite". The couch did not face the TV and a mirror was placed in the oddest location. The walls were dirty and in need of paint, and the furniture did not match. The balcony was narrow, and difficult to sit comfortably on. The room's window looked out upon a rooftop full of trash. When I went to the desk, I was told there were no rooms available and that all the "family suites" looked like that.

Other downers: The hotel was extremeley crowded. The wait in line for breakfast waffles was 20 minutes and we had to split my family up to eat. The pool was wall to wall kids. There was no room to just relax. It had at least 50 kids in it every time I looked.

Waits for elevators were long. Good luck trying to find a rolling valet when you check out. We waited by the front door for 30 minutes when we were checking out. We needed a rolling valet because we had a long downhill walk. We went back to our "suite" for an afternoon rest after the beach and before Shlitterbahn. The room was not made up or cleaned. I could live like that at home for a lot less. We left for the water park at 4, and still no room cleaning.

Checking out was a long process also. I stood in line for about 15 minutes. I lodged a formal complaint with the La Quinta. I was contacted by a manager on my answering machine. I called back and was told she was on vacation, and then I never did hear from her again.

The beach access is nice and the hotel did not smell musty. I don't know what the regular rooms are like, but they looked decent from the hallways. Beware the "family suite".

I also have suspicion that family and friends use the hotels facilities. I sat in the lobby waiting to buy tickets to something. I noticed several families enter the lobby from outside carrying all of their beach gear, wave hi to the people at the desk, stop at the lobby bathroom to change, and then proceed out the backside of the hotel to the pool and beach.

Overall, it was too crowded and not worth the money. I'm still looking for a comfortable place in South Padre that does not have a musty smell.

1 of 5  The very definition of TERRIBLE, A TripAdvisor Member, Austin, June 12, 2008

Where to begin on how pathetic this place is. First, we made our reservations months in advance for a wedding. The price we were quoted was $170 per night but that turned in to $190 upon check in. I guess inflation? We ordered a room with a jacuzzi (which, by the way, the jacuzzis are just small bathtubs with jets, so don’t get any false impressions of luxury.) SO, I’m at the front desk for 20 minutes while the person working typed feverishly on the PC – I knew there was a problem. I got a non-smoking suite. When we got in the room, I was immediately hit by the smell of smoke. I returned to the front desk and was told sorry, they were booked and couldn’t help me. When I threw a bit of a hassle, the manager promised he’d find me a non-smoking suite (so I guess they weren’t booked, just holding out?) However, the only non-smoking suite they had was a two bed queen with no jacuzzi (no big loss there). The manager had the audacity to tell me he had to charge me more because the room was larger. After a glare, he decided not to charge me. We got to our room and it was far from impressive. One reviewer said “cookie cutter” hotel – great description. It felt like I was at a Northeast El Paso budget inn. Nothing beach-like or resort-like about it at all. The parking lot is a terribly long walk. When it’s booked, you literally have to park a mile away. The internet was down, also. The worst part about this trip, however, is not what this hotel did to me. It’s what this hotel did to the bride and groom. After venting my frustration to the wedding party at dinner that evening, the groom explained his and his wife-to-be’s nightmare. They booked the honeymoon suite months in advance and when they arrived, the staff had mistakenly put someone else in the room. Because of the sorry nature of the staff, their lack of organization and their incompetence, he and his bride got the same room as we did. A plain piece of crap. Nothing to mark their special occasion. They didn’t offer to compensate or anything, just a repeated apology knowing that we were all stuck there for the experience and had already paid. On top of this, they supplied the catering and the dance hall. The food was terrible, cold and took about 2 hours to serve to everyone. The staff was rude and refused to make exceptions for people with certain allergies or non-preferences to meat, etc. This on top of the fact that it was a wedding party and between our friends and family, half of their sales for the weekend were to us. Collectively, we all felt robbed, but none of us could fathom the treatment of this La Quinta Inn and its staff toward the groom and his bride. I will never stay here again. I would never recommend this place and in fact, I would go so far as to say it’s my goal to cost them as much business as they cost my friend and his wife on their wedding. It’s jaded my overall view of hotels in the southern portion of South Padre (I have a great review for the Sandcastle Resort in Port Aransas – that place is classy.) My recommendation to anyone visiting the area that is unfamiliar – stay up in north padre where everything is cheaper, there is less of a “tourist trap” mentality and resorts are far better maintained. La Quinta South Padre, you are the very staple of terrible. Have a great summer ruining your reputation and losing your customers.

1 of 5  Find Another Hotel! Too Gross, A TripAdvisor Member, Texas, May 28, 2008

Well here we go...... First the issues you won't like. We stayed on the first floor in a jacuzzi room that was gross to say the least. The carpet was so dirty/stained you wore shoes to keep your bare feet off the floor. The bed had a mattress from circa 1978 on it that bowed in the middle so you woke up with a sore back every am. The bathtub had rust stains here and there.

There was a big roach running around the room and a small dead one inside the clock, yes inside the clock on the face of it. The hotel is pet friendly if you enjoy hearing barking dogs wake you up at all hours of the night not to mention stains here and there on the OLD carpeting from dog "accidents". Oh did I mention the pet odors if you know what I mean? The room would not stay cool to our liking either. At night you could see mice running around outside the hotel that terrified the ladies. The beach was dirty and not cleaned or raked as well. The pool is tiny and gets overcrowded easily.

The good...... The staff seemed friendly.

Summing it up find another place even if it cost more, you will be doing yourself a favor. The hotel needs to spend some money refurbishing the place starting with the gross carpeting.

1 of 5  WARNING! Beach Re-nourishment Underway, A TripAdvisor Member, Dallas, Texas, March 2, 2008

NOTE: There is a large beach re-nourishment project underway -- they had the beach all messed up and you could not even use it up in this end of the island. I read in a local paper the project will last through April - it has to end before the turtles come to nest.

We stayed only 1 night of our planned 3. This hotel is really getting run down and is already in pretty rough shape. Our "ocean view" room was very disappointing and on the 1st floor with only a view of the apartments on the next lot. The room was damp and smelled very musty and the bed sagged in the middle -- not a small sag, a full roll to the center type sag. Needless to say, we moved to the Radisson further south and it was MUCH nicer and the beach was open and no issues. The Sheraton is also nice and the construction at the new condos is moved mostly to interior work from the looks of the site, so there would be minimal disruption from construction there.

1 of 5  Don't waste your money on this Dump, A TripAdvisor Member, Houston, July 11, 2007

I had heard nice things about this hotel. We visit SPI at least once or twice a year and this was our first stay at La Quinta. Based on what other people had told us about this hotel we were excited about our stay. Let's just say, we were wrong.

This hotel, while only a few years old, is used and abused. It shows the wear and tear of frequent use and the ever popular Spring Breaker. We got a family suite, what an odd configuration. The front room, assumed to be the sitting area, had two double bed and a small couch right in front of the door to the hallway. One of the beds was right in front of the refirgerator so you could hardly open the door. The back room had one king bed. The room smelled musty/moldy and led to an allergy reaction for my two children and myself. The sheets were very worn and uncomfortable to sleep on. There was trash under the sink in the bathroom, hair on the floor, old food under the microwave on the counter. All in all the room was awful.

The pool area was dirty and had broken, old chairs around a small pool. The small room they served drinks in near the pool was dirty and the door looked as if it had never been cleaned.

If you don't mind a dirty room, old sheets, dirty pool area then this is the place for you. We will never stay at this La Quinta ever again. The Island has much new development. There are other choices to investigate before choosing this motel.
