5 of 5  Great hotel, great personnel, A TripAdvisor Member, Atlanta, June 21, 2009

Stayed at the Ritz for four nights. We arrive late at night and were dog tired. The staff at the front desk went out of their way to welcome us and accomodate us as quickly as possible. The concierge staff is excellent, even the front door personnel are helpful. The room itself was what you would expect - first class.

We have stayed in other European cities at The Four Seasons and consider the The Ritz Carlton Berlin to be of the same quality if not higher.

5 of 5  Berlin Ritz is Perfect!, A TripAdvisor Member, California, USA, June 17, 2009

Just stayed at the Berlin Ritz for 5 nights (two rooms) in early June with my family of 4. Everything was just perfect! I have logged 2+ Million miles traveling the globe and this was a top hotel stay experience for sure.

Contacted the hotel prior to arrival and were quickly connected with the very capable Concierge Torsten. In addition to arranging arrival transportation, etc., Torsten’s recommendation of reservations at Restaurant Kafer on the roof of the Reichstag was fabulous. . . avoided the long lines and enjoyed a great meal with a fabulous view. The rooms were very spacious (especially for Europe), furnishings comfortable, the rain shower divine, and the public areas tranquil and elegant. Especially at check in and throughout the stay, the staff was attentive, efficient and welcoming. My family and I were remembered and addressed by name as we were welcomed back into the lobby each time as if coming home. The location is ideal, walk to the Brandenburg Gate in 5 min, subway around the corner to anywhere, big mall just across the street. Last but not least, breakfast was simply the best. Concert at the Charlottenburg Palace is also an absolute must.

5 of 5  Best service... ever, A TripAdvisor Member, Leuven, Belgium, April 26, 2009

From the minute you arrive to the moment you leave, the personnel make you feel like a real V.I.P., greeting you by your name all day long and going out of the way trying to make your stay an unforgettable experience albeit being discrete.

The most friendly hotel personnel I have ever met in a top class luxury hotel.

The "no-limits" breakfast buffet is served in an authentic French bistro offering a very cosy atmosphere and although service is closing down around 10.30AM to prepare for lunch, every demand is being answered to please your wishes.

Book this breakfast in advance with your roomrate or else be prepared to pay a hefty 38€ for this unlimited breakfast.

The standard room is a... standard luxury room, in nice shades of beige and brown. With a heated bathroom floor and luxury (Bvlgari) amenities. The bath butler offers a service only immaginable in your dreams.

The hotel is situated bang in the middle of Berlin with connections to all directions right on the doorstep (S-, U-, and DB-Bahn).

Liked : being pampered like royalty (incredible service)

Disliked : nothing but for the price asked for extras (internet, minibar,...), but as these are optional, it is entirely your call

5 of 5  Perfect - you get what you pay for, A TripAdvisor Member, London, March 31, 2009

Just returned from a weekend away with my boyfriend. We are regular visitors to 5* hotels but were still blown away by the Ritz-Carlton. The beautiful lobby makes an excellent first impression and from the moment you arrive you are provided with teh most impeccable service.

We had requested a king sized bed in a non-smoking room and were immediately shown to a beautiful room. However it became apparent from when we entered the room that a guest had smoked there (it was barely noticeable but not ideal) before we had the chance to say anything the concierge was on the phone requesting we be moved. Within minutes new key cards were brought up and we were taken a to another room down the hall which smelt fresh and clean.

The room was impeccable and the mini bar and bathroom were very well appointed. The hotel offers a pillow menu from which you can select your prefered pillow(s) if you are not happy with the quantity or selection offered in the room.

If you decide to stay heer I can not recommend the bath butler service highly enough. You need to give the desk about an hours notice but then a maid will come up and run the most luxurious bath for you leaving you with a selection of fruit and champagne to indulge in whilst you soak. Truly the most amazing bath I've ever had!

We came down late and missed breakfast so we were invited to order in the curtain lounge instead, the food was excellent and once again the service we received was flawless.

In summary what some of the negative reviewers say is right , yes you get exactly what you would expect from a 5*, this does mean that some of those quirks (and disappointments) you get in other hotels which make for funny or eventful experience are (thankfully) missing, but if what you are looking for is a beautifully appointed hotel with impeccable service then this is pretty much as good as it gets.

5 of 5  A real Perfection, A TripAdvisor Member, BoraBora, March 16, 2009

Everything was just ideal starting from our arrival - very friendly and helpful staff, clean room (not too big, but quite OK), excellent service, and lavish buffet breakfast. When you book your room make sure that breakfast is included in the rate, you will save your money this way. SPA was great too. Would love to be back there one day!

5 of 5  Excellent break, A TripAdvisor Member, Northampton, March 5, 2009

We arrived for the last throw at celebrating my 50th birthday. I had been to Berlin a number of times before but this was as I expected the best hotel I had stayed in in the city. The location was especially poignant as more than 20 years earlier on my first visit I had viewed Potsdamer Platz as part of the no man's land between East and West. It was now a superb location for this vibrant city.

Prior to my arrival I received an email from the hotel with some general arrival enquiries and as a result of responding we were given an extended check out on the Sunday.

We were warmly welcomed and relaxed in our room. The staff were genuinely friendly as opposed to just doing a good job.

Our room looked out at the front of the hotel and was as anticipated comfortable and luxurious, we were on a good value weekend break.

Breakfast was slightly over busy but the quality was ok.

Only complaint was the weather but even the people of the Ritz Carlton cant regulate that.

5 of 5  Superb service, A TripAdvisor Member, Donegal, Ireland, February 24, 2009

The service from all the staff is superb, everyone were very friendly and helpful. Rooms are of the highest quality and comfort. The breakfast was excellent but expensive if not included in the price of your stay (make sure it is before you go). The Hotel is centrally located near to Brandenburg Gate and fantastic Underground and Train network. Highly recommended.

5 of 5  Fantastic!, A TripAdvisor Member, London, February 11, 2009

Loved this hotel. The room was spacious, quiet and immaculate.

Service was efficient and polite. The breakfast buffet was the best we had experienced at any hotel, and it's worth staying just for that.

Location-wise it's walking distance to the jewish holocaust memorial, a must-visit, and has a metro station directly opposite.

Hard to criticise anything, but if I had to I would only say that it is a bit weird that such a modern hotel has chosen a kind of colonial style for its decor. The swimming pool was also smaller than the photos suggest. Otherwise, top dog. Would love to stay there again. Highly recommended.

5 of 5  The perfect hotel., A TripAdvisor Member, London, UK, January 25, 2009

This is, quite simply, the perfect hotel. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, the service was perfect. The hotel is stunning, and in an excellent location. The (club) rooms are of a good size, with very good bathrooms (we loved the size of the bathtub) and wonderful beds.

If you can, go for a club-level room. The club is fantastic. Not only are the staff wonderful beyond belief, but the food presentations (although too few) are very good and the choice of drinks excellent.

5 of 5  Simply the best hotel anywhere, A TripAdvisor Member, Palm Springs, January 23, 2009

We love hotels. The best ones are life experiences and the awful ones can ruin trips. I should say that one of my life's goals is to stay at every Ritz Carlton in the world. In my opinion they are the absolute best in the hotel business.

This trip we added the Ritz Carlton Berlin to our list and I think it is the best hotel in the world. (Not resort, just hotel) Everything is new as the property opened only a couple of years ago standing right on top of what was the Berlin wall.

The lobby, lobby bar, team room, restaurants and common areas are full of luxury. The hallyways and rooms are appointed with beautifu furniture, but what gives the hotel its most amazing look is the polished laqured finish on all of the woodwork.

The rooms themselves are very spacious with an entryway, floor to ceiling windows, flat screen TV's, automatic blinds and of course mable bathrooms and heated marble flooring.

We stayed on the club level and had an amazing breakfast each day along with evening cocktails.

Their staff is incredibly warm, friendly and will do anything to help.

Truly, the best hotel stay in my life and I'm 30 week per year traveler.

5 of 5  Magnificent hotel in a superb location, A TripAdvisor Member, Dublin, January 9, 2009

I had a good feeling about this place the moment I walked through the door. The front-desk staff take you in hand the moment you arrive and ease you gently into a more comfortable way of living. In this regard, I would expecially like to thank both Maya and Louisa, two of the Ritz Carlton staff who embody the highest standards of customer service.

The bedrooms in the Ritz Carlton are of the highest calibre, havens of comfort in a frenetically lively city. Only the sound of the New Year's firecrackers could permeate the soundproofing of the windows. When the time came to say goodbye to this marvellous hotel, I left it reluctantly, secure in the knowledge that I would return in the future.

I arrived in the Ritz Carlton on the evening of the 31st of December, just in time to see the fireworks display in the Tiergarten close by the Brandenberg Gate. After the show had ended, I got back to the hotel in about five minutes, ready to sample a few glasses of their champagne. The atmosphere was very convivial, with everyone willing to imbibe the "gemutlichkeit".

The hotel is just across the road from the Sony Film Theatre (which shows all its films in English without German subtitles). The young, mostly German audience, are so knowledgeable that, for the most part, they have no difficulty in understanding the nuances and witticisms inherent in the English language. They were laughing out loud at Woody Allen's "Vicki Christina Barcelona".

More importantly, however, the Berlin Philharmonic is about 600 metres away from the hotel. It accommodates about 2,000 concert-goers and, although I didn't get to see the Philharmonic itself, I saw superb performances of the "Ode to Joy" and "Carmina Burana" by the Czech Philharmonic and Choir. Some of the tickets for the Berlin Phil are very reasonably priced and I intend to return in March to see Sir Simon Rattle and his orchestral colleagues in action .

The Ritz Carlton is famed throughout Berlin for the quality of its buffet breakfasts. Though they're not inexpensive, Berliners travel from far and wide just to partake in the sophistication of the repast on offer. There's a bakery in the restaurant itself and, needless to mention, the selection of breads is out of this world. They also offer a wide variety of cooked dishes, as well has hams and cheeses from all over Europe. Avoid this hotel for breakfast if you're obese or have a sweet tooth, because the temptation to munch on some of their fruit-based pastries is simply irresistible.

As for Berlin itself, I think it's right up there with Paris, London and Rome as a uniquely inspiring European city. You can't help but be conscious of the old East-West divide when you're there. Echoes of the bitter-sweetness you experience when you see Venice for the first time. (I was moved by the photograph, on the railings of the Tiergarten, of a young eighteen year old East German girl, who had been mown down by bullets when trying to escape to the West in 1989. Incredible to think that these atrocities were perpetrated less than two decades ago.). But, emotionally, it's also difficult not to be moved by the immense transformation that has taken place in the city over the past two decades.

Whilst there, I took the ninety minute double-decker bus ride through the main attractions of the place. An excellent way of getting an instantaneous snapshot of the overall layout of this uniquely moving and vibrant city.

5 of 5  Almost perfect, A TripAdvisor Member, Dublin, January 4, 2009

This hotel is one of the best hotels I have seen, and I am traveling a lot. I have to emphasize the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. Food is brilliant in the Brasserie and the Curtain Club. Rooms are exceptionally nice.

Here are my critics:

There is no smokers lounge. Guests have to smoke outside which looks a bit cheap. I was told that they used to have one but it was closed after complaints from guests

A charge of 5 EUR for 15 minutes internet in the business is a rip-off.

My experience with the overnight shoe shine service was clearly not 5 star worthy: After leaving my shoes outside my room the night before I had to find them unpolished in the morning. They just put the shoe polish on but didn't give it a shine. At reception I had to argue with the shoe boy and listen to excuses, like there were a lot of shoes to clean that night. My shoes got a shine in the lobby and I got a shoe bag as apology.

5 of 5  Ritz Carlton Berlin, A TripAdvisor Member, Miami, December 24, 2008

Of course, the Ritz was beyond my expectations. Beautiful facilities, gorgeous spa, gym, and lovely rooms. They had anything I needed at any time. Everyone who worked there spoke at least 3 languages so communication wasn't at all a problem. The concierge hooked us up at the best German restaurants and the food at the hotel restaurant was outstanding. Try the quiche and lobster bisque! The hotel is in the business district so I walked everywhere. They have bicycles for you to take out, which I did. I rode through the park and into the zoo which didn't take more than 10 mins from the time I left the hotel. The room was pretty and the bar was exceptional!! You can see and experience soo many wonderful attractions in this area just by walking to them!

5 of 5  WOW WOW WOW, A TripAdvisor Member, Prague, Czech Republic, December 22, 2008

I booked this hotel as the christmas surprice for my husband. We were in this hotel before christmas day, because of christmas market. One market is just in front of the hotel, also metro station is near by. Hotel have very good location.

Entrance to the hotel is very nice, with big christmas tree. Door man was very nice to us and parked our car.

We booked club level room, which is in 10th floor with lovely view.

Staff in the club is very kindly, pleasant and polite.

In club lounge you can have champagne or coctails like bacardi cola, campari orange etc, several food, canapes, sweets.

Room is amazing, with bvlgari amenities, slippers, bathrobes. We have in the room complimentary water and lovely donut with name of the hotel, which was very kind. Room is very big and comfortable, with nice decoration.

Breakfast was amazing , best what we ever had. With all what are you thinking, exotic fruit ( maracuja, blueberry, strawberry, grapewine, pinnaple etc), many kind of cheeses, ham, salami, eggs, best pastry what we ever had and many kinds of sweets.

I highly recommend this hotel, specialy to romantic stay or as the present to someone. We come back to this hotel for sure.

Thanks to all staff for unforgettable stay in Ritz Carlton hotel :)

5 of 5  Loved it!, A TripAdvisor Member, Holland, December 18, 2008

We stayed 3 days in this hotel, booked with http://www.vakantiewegwijzer.com.

It was very good, the people were very nice to us.

5 of 5  Stately yet comfortable and welcoming, A TripAdvisor Member, Detroit, November 22, 2008

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights in October. It is a lovely hotel and you can connect conveniently to anyplace in Berlin, using the subway or walking. Lots of restaurants and things to do right across the street at the Potsdamer Platz, where there is also the subway. The door man (wish I knew his name) was incredibly helpful with recommendations for places to go and things to do. The room was large and comfortable. The spa was wonderful - the massage was the best.

5 of 5  je ne sais quoi, A TripAdvisor Member, nyc, November 10, 2008

I can't put my finger on it but this hotel has something special. The service was great, the room was large, breakfast kicked butt and the spa and pool were terrific.

The location on Potsdammer Platz is great. Most of the subway lines, the U and S trains, are across the street. The Matte district and Museum Island is not too far by cab ( 5 euros at the most).

For a quick bite I recommend Vipiano the place next store. It's really good for pasta, pizza and salad. And it's cheap.

Beleive it or not the Ritz was a good value even at 225 euro a night. The Sofitel at Gendarmenmarkt was just as costly and half the hotel.

Book through Amex for a better deal.

5 of 5  Absolutely Fantastic Experience!, A TripAdvisor Member, Aberdeen, Scotland, November 5, 2008

The Ritz Carlton Berlin was a truly fantastic experience. My wife, 10 year old son and I had a four night stay in the hotel in mid October and the hotel and staff were truly first class. We had booked adjoining rooms on the club level and the hotel and staff from check-in to check-out were truly outstanding.

The rooms were immaculate with all the usual amenities you would expect in a 5 star property.

My son and I ate breakfast in the club lounge every morning and the presentation and service was superb. My wife had coffee / tea sent to the room most mornings and again the service was prompt and presentation also great.

We had dinner in the Brasserie twice during our stay and on both occasions the food was of a very high standard. It also seemed to be very popular with non-hotel guests which is a good indication.

We also had the most amazing dinner in Vitrum, the hotels michelin star restaurant. This was our sons first experience at this level of dining and he loved it from start to finish. The service was attentitive without being entrusive. The food was truly spectacular and if they can keep their team together the next star will surely be on it's way. The restaurant manager was extremely good and the professionalism of his team was a credit to him. The sommelier was the best I have experienced and you could see the delight in his eyes when we decided to let him match the wines to our individual dishes. We were given a tour of the kitchen and were delighted to meet the head chef and his team. His food was breathtaking and a true memory that will last a long time.

The bar on the ground floor level was very nice and we enjoyed the ambiance very much. Again the service here was excellent. On my first night I spotted Michael Schumacher and his brother there so it's definately a bit of a celeb spot.

My son and I used the pool one morning and although it was a bit small it was still a pleasant space to relax.

The club level staff and front of house were all excellent and as we were departing several of them were at the door to wave us goodbye. We will definately be back!

Berlin as a whole is a great and fascinating city. There is so much to do and see that you would need at least a week to pack in your top ten spots. The people on a whole were also very corteous and polite and should be very proud of what they have acheived with their city since the cold war.

5 of 5  Rare luxury experience, A TripAdvisor Member, Los Angeles, October 29, 2008

Luxury is a word that has been much abused in today's hotel industry, but it has been my experience that the Ritz-Carlton Berlin delivers true luxury. Most of the credit in what makes the difference between a luxury hotel and a true luxury experience goes to the staff. Indeed the Berlin staff had the ideal blend of deference and appropriateness, always very professional, impeccably clad and always prompt to help with intelligent responses. The staff was neither too pompous or overly ceremonial (which is often an issue with staff of luxury hotels) nor unprofessional/inappropriate as is too often the case. Of course the hotel itself was perfectly located within walking distance from the Brandenburg gate and the start/finish of the marathon, the reason of our stay there. The rooms and bathrooms were very spacious, a bit heavy on the mahogany and marble for today's decoration tastes, with superbly comfortable beds/linen. The bistro-style restaurant and breakfast were perfect and the spa appropriate, but felt a bit claustrophobic with no outside windows.

Lastly, the added touch that made the difference was when we came back to the hotel after finishing the marathon, the entire staff in the lobby stopped and applauded to congratulate the runners.

this hotel is the business. Rooms are beautiful and fully kitted out. The staff are unreal!! Would totally recommend this to any person.

5 of 5  Great Luxury Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, usa, September 29, 2008

Best Hotel in Berlin. Beautiful Rooms, fine furnishings, Great comfortable bed and down comforters. Bathroom is luxurious , fluffy towels, turn down service.

Breakfast is delicious, fresh fruits , exotic main courses, delicious baker, truly a wonderful experience for dining. Location is superb, just a splendid hotel to stay in.

5 of 5  Amazing Property-- Do Not Miss This Hotel!!, A TripAdvisor Member, McLean, VA, September 12, 2008

We travel frequently and have stayed at some highly rated hotels in both larger cities (Georges V - Paris) and in smaller cities/towns) in the past, but our recent visit to this property was our best hotel experience ever. The room (Club Level Suite) was superb and the service levels -- from the Front Desk to the Concierge to the staff in the Club Lounge -- consistently were superlative.

We were traveling with family and they provided adjoining rooms for us, something none of the other hotels (including other 5 star properties) were able to do. They went out of their way to cook special foods for my daughter (age 2) to ensure that she had plenty of things that she liked. Even when things did not go perfectly at first, we received an apology and they "made things right."

We had an amazing stay in Berlin thanks, in no small part, to the extraordinary staff at this hotel.

5 of 5  Regular Business, A TripAdvisor Member, Germany, September 1, 2008

Best Value for your money in Berlin! Nothing better when comparing rates to other five star hotels in the area.

Excellent services, very helpful staff in all situations (once with my daughter, her camera had an empty battery - they brought us new ones five minutes later into our room - of course without charge).

5 of 5  Wonderfull, A TripAdvisor Member, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, August 24, 2008

Stayed for just one night in the Ritz Berlin, arrived at 21.00 so didn't had much change to check everytging out. But what I saw was simply perfect.

Very nice and warm welcome, quick and efficient check-in.

The standard room itselve was simply perfect, the best bed I've ever slept in, 2 blankets and 8! pillows. The room is equipt with several chairs, a large desk and an art nouveau home cinema set.

The bathroom is very large, offering a separate shower and tub. Classy amenities from Bvlgari.

Extra's like minibar and roomservice is on an acceptable price level, the roomservice menu offers very great dishes for little ones and grownups.

Definitely worth staying here, altough if you really want to be in the citycenter a bit far away...........

5 of 5  Excellent stay, A TripAdvisor Member, ealing, August 8, 2008

Excellent hotel. All the major Berlin sights are easily accessible either on foot, by U or S Bahn or City Tour Bus. Check-in and check-out effortless. Room immaculate. Buffet breakfast had plentiful choice. Concierge extremely helpful. Delicious apples in lobby. Pool cannot cater for lap swimming but as I had it to myself two evenings running, can't complain.

5 of 5  Impressive attention to detail, A TripAdvisor Member, Munich, July 25, 2008

I stayed just short of a week and it was a pleasure. Courtesy was not too contrived - to a pleasant level. The room immaculate and very well presented.

The location is great, just out the front door and down the steps to Potsdamerplatz. There is even a convenient shopping center adjacent to the hotel itself.

As the title suggests, the attention to detail from all levels, from initial greeting by the doormen to checking in is impressive. A smooth ride all the way.

I'll be back. Anyone spare me some change? =)

5 of 5  Gorgeous Hotel, prime location, A TripAdvisor Member, NYC, July 25, 2008

Upon walking into the lobby, the supreme elegance of the lobby set the tone for our 2-nt stay. The room was equally elegant and spacious. Incredible bathroom/ shower with hidden ceiling speakers. Location is perfectt -- on Potsdamer Platz with multiple lines crossing through. Staff helpful as one would expect at a R-C.

Advice: Take a bike tour -- Berlin is flat and has bike paths throughout the city. We took the tour that met at the Hackescher Mkt , and were led to the hostel around the corner to get the bikes. Excellent tour guide, and with the bikes, covered so much in little time.

Restaurant Rec: Malatesta -- Italian restaurant with much better fare than most Italian places and with honest prices; run by passionate Italians who go out of their way to take care of you. Lovely outside tables w a view of the Gendarmenmarkt square.

Restaurant Rec #2: Cafe am Neuen See -- a Biergarten

Gorgeous setting in a park-like setting. Will need a cab to get there probably.

5 of 5  Perfect, A TripAdvisor Member, Switzerland, July 21, 2008

The hotel is completely renovated.

The breakfast is absolutely wonderful. (A lot of choice)

The service of the breakfast is sometimes a little bit slow.

(notice that it is a reccurent comment in my review...)

The check in was quick.

Nevertheless the room we had asked ( high floor) wasn't available.

That wasn't a problem but when we came back (december 2007) we still didn't obtain it. And no upgrade for coming back twice.

The Pillow list (you can choose!) is not very true. Actually the housekeeping never heard from this "pillow list".

The fitness center was a mess. (see pictures). But the swimming pool (with automatic waves) is very beautiful. Perhaps a little bit small for a (renovated!!!) 5 star hotel.

There weren't any chocolate or flowers in the room.

That is a normal criteria for a 5 star hotel in Germany (www.hotelsterne.de)

The amenities, food and furniture are amazing.

The problem is ALWAYS the serivce. (for example the room service, you seem to annoy them!!!)

I hope his review could have helped you.

Don't hesitate to contat me. I speak French, German and Italian too.

5 of 5  My Favorite Hotel in the World, A TripAdvisor Member, NYC, July 7, 2008

I have been lucky enough to stay in some beautiful hotels around the world. But the Ritz Carlton Berlin is by far my favorite hotel I have ever stayed in. I often find excuses to schedule myself layovers in Berlin when I travel just so I can try to book a room. I always stay on the Executive level as I find this is well worth it. Their breakfasts are massive and luxurious with increadible selections of fruits, cheeses, meats, nuts, and pastry items. Fresh orange juice and grapefruit juice is there as well. During the day they can make small sandwiches and salads which are excellent. Between breakfast and lunch I usually save mone eating in the lounge.

The rooms are really spectacular for both business and leisure. Each room is equipped with a large flat screen telvision as well as an all region DVD player, so I could watch DVDs I brought with me in my room. From a design point of view, a wood-floor entery way with substantial closets, armoirs, and minibar give way to a carpeted living area with great space lovely furnishings and one of the most comfortable beds in which I have ever slept. The large marble bathroom has the best rainfall shower as well as seperate tub (this is one of the few tubs I know is clean enough to take a bath in). The staff are always excellent, while valuing professionalism over overt warmth, they are friendly and get the job done. Concierges (particularly Cairina and Thorsten) are excellent.

There were some disappointments on my last stay. First, the quality of the food from room service was hit or miss and I really preferrred the food from the executive lounge. Furthermore, I could not get internet access in rooms on one side of the hotel as the design of the building blocks the WiFi signal. I had to change rooms to deal with this problem. I was then awoken at 8 o'clock in the evening say they needed to do repair work on my room (what I don't know). However, I was upgraded to a grand suite which was spectacular and a half bottle of Moet and Chandon was waiting for me with a hand-written note from the concierge apologizing for all the problems and thanking me for my continued busienss.

One other disappintment: I was scheduled to leave the hotel on the day that President Medvedev of Russia was scheduled to arrive at the hotel. Despite the fact that German Federal Police began to close various parts of Pottsdammer Platz from early in the morning, the hotel would not tell me what was going on as they did not want to give away the "secret" of their VIP guest. His security etc., shut down Pottsdammer Platz and the lobby of the hotel for roughly 45-75 minutes. As I attempted to leave i was stopped. I very nearly missed an imporant connection to Munich for a business meeting because of this. Traffic around the Square was paralyzed and only because my train was delayed 45 minutes at Hauptbahnhof did I make it in time.

While the hotel did send a bellman in a hotel car with me to the station to try to ensure I made it (which I eventually did), I was disappointed that staff were so secretive. Had they simply sent a note to all guests that an event was taking place which could cause delays during certain periods I could have changed my plans and avoided such problems. I have come to expect more from this lovely property.

While it is difficult to discuss value when you are paying 300-400 Euro a night, comapred to what other hotels charge in Europe I am always happy to pay the roughly 350 Euro it usually costs to get a club room.

5 of 5  WOW! Amazing service and rooms ... I'm going back, A TripAdvisor Member, Madrid, June 25, 2008

Quality, quality, quality. That's the Ritz Carlton in Berlin. I have been priviledged, in that I have stayed at 3 other Ritz Carlton hotels before and they were all excellent. This one proved to be just as good.

Front desk attention was brilliant, the room was very large with calssical design, all very new, superb details in the room, exceptionally comfortable bed, massive bath, lots of towels, brilliant toiletries (Bulgari), etc etc.

Breakfast next day was very, very good - they had everything you could care to mention and MORE!

Next time I'm in Berlin, this will AUTOMATICALLY be my choice.

5 of 5  Excellent all round, A TripAdvisor Member, belgium, May 14, 2008

After staying at the Regent, I found the Ritz Carlton to be in the same league but with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere.

The room was large and very comfortable, with the details expected from Ritz Carlton. The bathroom was also superb, with one the best showers ever (after the Amstel in Amsterdam) and toiletries from Bulgari.

The restaurants were all good, and I enjoyed the tea lounge (very large selection of loose-leaf teas) and the Curtain Bar. While I did not like the decor of the Desbrosses Brasserie, I had a good lunch there, and the breakfast buffet is fantastic (but the jams and fruit juices were better at the Adlon).

The spa was, as in so many luxury hotels, underground, so you could not enjoy natural light and a nice view. The fitness and the sauna are very good but the pool is too small to swim laps.

Overall, one of the best experiences in a European city hotel, although, for my taste, it lacks the authenticity and patina of some of the older palaces (Bristol Paris, Sacher, Amstel, Baur au Lac, Ritz Lisbon).

5 of 5  A stunningly suberb hotel that touches and exceeds all the bases, A TripAdvisor Member, Colchester, United Kingdom, April 23, 2008

This was our 2nd stay at this hotel and we chose it as the venue to celebrate my step-parents wedding anniversary. We had previously stayed on the club floor and again booked a club floor room for us and them and were pleased to find that standards were as good as before. Service in the Club Lounge is the best in its league in our experience and the staff are utterly friendly, welcoming, and professional. The daily food presentations and drinks cannot be faulted and the entire experience left us wanting more. The rooms are very well appointed and furnished to a very high standard, while the amenities are again without fault. We can recommend the Curtain Bar on the ground floor for both pre and after dinner drinks and the live music (piano and singer) set the right note for a relaxing end to both our evenings there. We took dinner on the first night in Desbrosses restaurant and with pre-notification from us they had prepared a menu of versions of their fare suitable for my mother-in-law who suffers from wheat intolerance. How's than for attention to guest needs?

We are regular visitors to Berlin and will return again and again (budget permitting).

5 of 5  Deservedly number one..., A TripAdvisor Member, Aylesbury, UK, April 22, 2008

I picked this hotel based on the reviews here as this was a special birthday trip to be combined with running the Berlin half marathon. The excellent service started a few days before arrival when I was sent an email asking what time I was landing in Berlin and did I want my room early. We arrived at the hotel at our predicted time and were promptly and efficiently checked in and escorted to our room. The service and courtesy from all of the staff really made this hotel stand out - including the reception staff struggling with the Ryanair web page to check us in online for our return flight (obviously not many guests at the RC demean themselves by travelling on such an airline, and I have to admit this is the last time I'll use them). The contrast between Ryanair and the service at the RC really does show you get what you pay for.

The room was large and comfortable, with all the luxury touches you expect from a 5 star hotel. The gym was good, and the breakfasts we had were good quality, but typical city hotel prices. For a city centre hotel, the whole experience is one of calmness and an escape from the hustle and bustle outside.

The other major plus point of the Ritz Carlton is its location - right on Potsdamer Platz, making it close to transport links, food, shopping, entertainment and the excellent Gemaldgallerie along with several other galleries and museums. There are plenty of dining choices all around in all price brackets. I can thoroughly recommend 'Vox' restaurant at the Grand Hyatt nearby for a special occasion. Superb quality at reasonable prices (for the food) but €11 for a bottle of mineral water was a bit steep - especially since the £ has slumped against the € in recent months.

Having previously stayed at the Marriot and Radisson SAS in Berlin, this was worth the extra for a special occasion, or just to experience service at a level not often found these days, even at other 5 star hotels I stayed at.

5 of 5  SUPER with a little but, A TripAdvisor Member, London, March 29, 2008

The hotel is luxurious, staff are polite except on our last day! The staff at the reception was either hung-over or on something high - she did not listen to what my husband had told/explained to her, in the end it went wrong and she had the ordersity to return to my husband asking him what he had already explained twice. Luckily enough there were sober fast-thinking people around to fix the problem quickly. We asked for hot water on a regular basis for heating up our baby's food, on one or two occassion the hot water brought up was brown. We ordered food from room service all throughout our stay because of our baby, we were not impressed with the room service menu and some of the food that was brought up. On one occassion, the wrong order was brought up but I was too hungry to notify them.

I personally felt insecure on entering the building because of all the staff at the door, but all in all very clean, sheets & towels were changed on a daily basis. The breakfast crew were very polite and on top of things.

I stayed here in the last few days. This is an excellent hotel , beautifully presented and well run. The staff are very attentive and the rooms are at the top end of the range. The cost is reasonable given the quality of the hotel and the location excellent. Recommended.

5 of 5  Great Hotel!, A TripAdvisor Member, Portugal, March 23, 2008

Great hotel!

Been there last year with my wife and we simply loved every minute of being there! Starting with the main entrance and going to the restaurant and the rooms evetyrhing is surrounded by exquisite good taste. One of the best hotels that I´ve been no doubt!

5 of 5  Pure relaxation in Berlin, A TripAdvisor Member, Ireland, March 16, 2008

Stayed in the Ritz-Carlton Berlin for one week in early March, and had a great time!

I stayed on the club level, and was thoroughly impressed by both the attentive service and relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel. The room itself was flawless, all rich colours and chandeliers, and very quiet. I also ate in the Brasserie Debrosses for breakfast each day, which was a pretty epic affair.

Having previously stayed nearer the Ku'damm, the location of the Ritz Carlton was probably more appropriate for tourists, being near Potsdamer Platz, Under den Linden etc.

I also found that the concierge and club lounge staff were excellent at providing good restaurant and travel recommendations.

To summarise, the Ritz Carlton Berlin is the ideal case to explore and enjoy the delights of fantastic Berlin.

Four of us stayed at the ritz-carlton for a 3night brake just before christmas. The very good location was an added bonus. The rooms were large with beautifully appointed bathrooms and the staff managed to be friendly without being "cheesy". I tried hard to find any fault, but this is just a great place to stay. I tried to book again for an easter break, but left it too late; so if you want near perfection- book early.

5 of 5  Superb service in every way, A TripAdvisor Member, New York, November 10, 2007

My wife and I spent a week in Berlin staying at the Ritz Carlton.

Our upgraded room (courtesy of American Express Platinum) was very big, beautifully decorated, and with a large bathroom with separate shower and every amenity. Towels were changed twice a day, unless you asked not to. The included buffet breakfast had everything you could possibly want...all kinds of breads, fish, fresh fruit and juice, dry cereals, etc. In addition , they made any hot dish you wanted, eggs, pancakes, etc. to order.

The concierge (Marc and Thorsten) desk was fabulous. They made all of our restaurant reservations and the recommendations they added to our selections were excellent.

They gave us perfect directions with clarity to all of the places we wanted to see, including Potsdam (Sans Souci)...via train and connecting bus.

My wife had left a brooch in our hotel in Dresden. The concierge desk called the hotel we had stayed at; when that hotel, the Taschenbergpalais Kempinske, also excellent ,found the jewelry, they arranged to have the brooch sent overnight mail to us in Berlin without any expense to us.

Lunch in the Debrosses Cafe/Bistro was superb. Everyone on the staff was pleasant and cheerful. We have stayed in many deluxe hotels, but the Ritz Carlton Berlin was one of the finest experiences we have ever had........and they had no attitude!

4 of 5  central pleasant hotel, but expensive, A TripAdvisor Member, kent, June 22, 2009

as expected with ritz-carlton this hotel is smart, well appointed and upmarket. Breakfasts are excellent but pricey. Location is very good. Downside would be this is a conference venue

4 of 5  small faults, A TripAdvisor Member, Luzern, Switzerland, April 22, 2009

As most reviewers have already told you, the Ritz-Carlton Berlin has a perfect location. We've found the standard rooms 820/822 to be spacious enough, clean and well fitted. The safe is large enough for a laptop. You get both a bathtub and a shower. Inter-room sound insulation is mediocre. The staff was very corteous and made us feel welcome. However, there were a few minor issues: The pool/whirlpool are tiny. The room rates were very reasonable, but the food and beverages are pricey - € 6,50 for 20cl coke. You'll get a cotton handtowel (the one you usually get in Italy, I call them "non-absorbing" - we use such towels to dry dishes) and a large terry cloth bathtowel. Obviously no one thought of using a towel to dry one's hair, so there is none

4 of 5  good but not great, A TripAdvisor Member, new york city, March 23, 2009

i value the ratings on tripadvisor and i've been to berlin a few times in the past few years, but i don't really understand why the ritz carlton berlin got such raves. the location is as good as other luxury hotels, but it wasn't effortless service like the adlon or the regent. at the price i was paying, the staff shouldn't be trying to pinch every extra penny from me, like wanting to charge extra for an english newpaper? or charging me to access my email in their business center? no luxury hotel does that to my knowledge. my room was beautiful, the amenities were nice, the breakfast was incredible! but the hotel was half empty (probably from the economy) but wouldn't i be more likely to spend more at the hotel if i got a room upgrade or even an english newspaper?

4 of 5  Great Location - Wonderful Hotel - STANDARD services !, A TripAdvisor Member, Hamburg, Germany, February 23, 2009

The Ritz Carlton Berlin is the 2nd Ritz Carlton’s hotel in Germany (after Ritz-Carlton Wolfsburg), which opened its door in January 2004, shortly after 1 ½ year of construction.

Ritz Carlton Berlin stands as one of the main competitor for Berlin’s Luxury hotels market - along with other “Old Grand” like The Adlon Kempinski, The Regent Berlin (managed by Four Seasons group), Schlosshotel im Grunewald - or even the new comers such Hotel de Rome (Rocco forte group) and the Mandala Hotel (part of or design hotel).

One thing that most agree about this property is – THE LOCATION – which is conveniently located at the prestigious Postdamer Platz – simply just a step away from the business and government district, shopping, cultural venues and other popular attractions.

As we arrived in from of the hotel entrance street – I noticed the lack of immediately assistance at the front entrance – probably because it was Friday (week-end) and there are many arrivals – with a short wait - we was able to gave the car key for to the valet person (who seems in hurried) – and a doorman assisted our luggage immediately as we approached the check-in desk.

The check-in went smooth – the agent is professional – scored only 80 points, as the agent missed to inform us regarding our room package benefits and our requested arrangement. On the other hand – the agent was successful fulfill our request regarding the 2nd room booked for our guests. The curb side check-in was provided as the agent guided us to the elevator (unfortunately did not mention regarding facilities hours – ex. Breakfast time, spa etc.).

Our room is located on the High floor – overlook to Beisheim Center. In the room I found a welcome card well placed next to a chocolate amenity . The room lavish with wonderful dark red wood panel mixed with the golden sand colors – along with yellow, green and gray tone fabric – giving a bit a bit Prussian style feeling of USA glory 20’s art décor. The Bathroom has a good size – with separate standing shower and a bathtub (all in sand brown/pink marble). A small walk-in closet was well design - making it looks lovely even for its small narrow size.

The highlight of the hotel facilities is the “La Prairie” spa – adjacent to the gym and small sparkling heated swimming pool. The spa is small but lovely – I managed to have a massage treatment, which I rated it “acceptable” - 70 points. The spa is well put – include with the sauna and whirlpool – one thing that I noticed clearly – they only have one agent in the morning – who is also a spa therapist – so there is only limited treatment time available.

The breakfast was served in Brasserie Desbroses – which has lively, casual ambience. Breakfast is buffet style – the food quality and options are great (life cooking station and pastry counter). There are few downsides. First - the services were a bit slow, (ex. in replacing the coffee or removed used plates). The staffs appear professional – but missing the WOW factor “smile and attention (abilities to fulfill guests need in advance). Second - I understand that it is a brasserie style setting – but, for the luxury hotel standard I think a table clothes/wears are necessary. I rated 85 points for food and 70 points for services.

Overall – I did enjoy the stay at the Ritz Carlton Berlin. Overall services provided just right on the standard. Certainly they are some rooms for perfection. I certainly recommend this hotel – especially for its location, the food quality, and their wonderful spa facilities.

4 of 5  NIce and stuffy, A TripAdvisor Member, Vancouver, Canada, August 16, 2008

Stayed at the Ritz Carlton for 5 nights at the beginning of August. The hotel is very nice and makes a nice first impression, staff very friendly and helpful as would be expected. We stayed at this hotel after staying at 3 different Four Seasons in Eastern Europe immediately before (reviews posted). We love the Four Seasons and this was our first Ritz Carlton and were excited to see how they compared. While the Ritz Carlton is very nice it is decorated in an over the top stuffy style, my grandma would have LOVE it! The staff were very nice but there was just something missing compared to the treatment we had received at the Four Seasons but it is hard to put your finger on what it was.

On one occasion we had had in room dining (which came with a card that said the "trolley" would be picked up in one hour.) Upon leaving the room we called to let them know that we would like our turndown service while we went for an evening walk. Upon return we came to a room which had had its turndown service but they had left the stinky trolley sitting there to greet us when we got back a couple hours later.

On another occasion we were lounging in bed with the "do no disturb" light on and had a knock on our door. I peeked through the peek hole to see a hotel employee standing there.

Overall though this is a nice hotel and from what I understand standard Ritz Carlton style. We did have a nice stay and the location is perfect.

We booked our stay through the hotel website at a rate of 350 Euro per night for the lowest category room (we did get a slight upgrade on check-in though).

4 of 5  Old-World Luxury, A TripAdvisor Member, San Francisco, California, December 14, 2007

November 2007, paid ~250 Euro/night.

Travel agent was able to get us bumped to Club Level at no extra charge which allowed drinks and finger food gratis. Style of Club lounge area was hunting lodge with dedicated concierge who were always helpful, friendly, and attentive.

Room was nice size - very comfortable for two. Bathroom had separate shower and large soaking tub. Marble everywhere.

"Pillow menu" was nice touch and appreciated.

Great location near Tiergarten, Holocaust Memorial, and both U- and S-bahn.

3 of 5  Really Good....But the Adlon is Much Better, A TripAdvisor Member, Dallas, TX, March 15, 2009

The Ritz Carlton truly is a very good property, loaded with polished wood, great marble, Bulgari toiletries, and all sorts of luxuries, but I found it well short of the Adlon, both in style and in service. At both properties, I booked standard rooms, but at the Adlon, my room had heated bathroom floors, choices of bath salts, a mini-library in room, and even a live plant. Likewise, the gym and spa were exceptional and service faultless.

In comparison, when you enter the Ritz Carlton you can easily think the entry rug in the lobby was borrowed from most any Marriott or Renaissance property. If you go to the changing room at the gym and spa you will find it quite cramped and compact unless you are alone, and while the noise isolation from the exterior is excellent, the interior noise from adjacent rooms and from doors closing wasn't top of class.

My three service requests were either unheeded or done incorrectly, I was given German newspapers which I couldn't read each morning, and one evening I called service 3 times and let it ring 10 times each call without an answer. On going to the desk, I was told that they share customer service with the Marriott late at night.

We all know you can experience service snafu's in any property, but what was most disappointing is that when I expressed them to the woman at the desk, she was painfully indifferent, which is out of character for Ritz Carlton properties.

I had recently returned from a stunning and memorable stay at the Four Seasons Gresham Palace in Budapest and because the Ritz Carlton had a similarly high Conde Nast Gold List rating, I chose it over the Adlon, but was disappointed and won't return nor will I recommend it to anyone. I will recommend the Adlon, however, and will suggest if you travel further east, don't miss the Gresham Palace in Budapest.

3 of 5  Unspectacular stay at The Ritz Carlton Berlin, A TripAdvisor Member, Germany, February 19, 2009

I stayed at The Ritz Carlton Berlin from December 26 - 28, 2008. The rate was company based and included breakfast.

At arrival I was welcomed by a doorman who also took care of the luggage and guided me to reception. As I was the last arriving guest that evening, the receptionist knew my name before I could tell her and checked me in very friendly. I was told that I got a very nice room and was guided to the elevator, only - not the room.

Room 629 was a standard room with no special sight and quite far away from the elevator. According to the floor plan it was the same size all standard rooms had. I couldn't imagine why that room was a special one. However the room was very comfortable and spacious, the bathroom had a walk in shower, bathtub and a separate toilet. Turn down was already done and a complimentary bottle of water was given. A welcome notice of the management or fresh fruits were not in the room. The luggage transfer to the room was short in time. I wasn't informed about the breakfast times from the staff so I searched for a directory, but didn't find any. After requesting one, it was delivered to the room.

A paper was brought to the room next morning and shoe shine was done correctly. One had to get up not too late because breakfast was offered until 10.30am, only - even on saturdays and sundays. The breakfast was served in Brasserie Desbroses and both days it was an annoying experience. It seemed as if the Ritz Carlton philosophy ends when entering the breakfast restaurant: One first was asked for the room number (not the name) and had to sign a bill before entering the restaurant. As I told the staff that breakfast was included in my room rate and I would not like to sign a bill, I was told that everyone has to sign it and it will not be charged if breakfast is included. This dialogue wasn't friendly at all, the restaurant was overcrowded and the staff seemed a bit confused. A guidance to a free seat was missing as there were problems with the service in general (used plates were not brought away, used cutlery wasn't replaced and on sunday the ordered hot chocolate wasn't served). There was no table wear, just a paper placemat which informed about the breakfast price (38,-- Euro; one of the most expensive breakfast rates in Germany). The breakfast itself was very good, there were plenty of choices, a life cooking station and the products were of high quality. At 10.30am the staff did start to prepare the restaurant for lunchtime.

All in all the lodging aspect was acceptable - but The Ritz Carlton Berlin is one of the most expensive hotels in Berlin and there might be higher expectations at the service level (especially at the breakfast restaurant). That's why I rate this hotel "neutral" - nothing special - with three Tripadvisor stars.

2 of 5  Better than the RC Powersocurt, not as good as the RC Osaka, A TripAdvisor Member, United Kingdom, August 5, 2008

Last week I spent two nights in the Ritz Carlton in a Junior Suite ( 410 EUR per night, breakfast an extra of 28EUR). The hotel is part of the new Beisheim Center, built in elegant american architecture style and it includes the Ritz Carlton, office spaces, apartments and a Marriott Hotel as well. The Beisheim Center is owned by Otto Beisheim (80 years old German billionaire, founder of the "Metro" trade group) and located on the Potsdamer Platz, the former nomansland, where the Berlin Wall went through.

I arrived at the hotel around 11:45am, albeit the early time, my suite was however ready. The problems started when I tried to enter my room - the keycard didn't work. So I asked somebody from the hotel staff, who was walking by, to open my room. I entered the room and had the intention to phone the reception desk to bring me a new card - unfortunately the phone didn't work. None of the 3 phones in my room. And 20 minutes already passed by and I was still waiting for my little piece of luggage to arrive in my room. So I went to the reception desk and asked for a replacement of my keycard and the whereabouts of my luggage and told them to get my phone working. After 10 more minutes my luggage arrived and I decided to try the spa and fitness facilites of the hotel. The swimming pool is rather small, just enough to refresh yourself. Two hours later I was back in my room and the phone still wasn't working. I got dressed and left the hotel, stopping by the reception desk, and told them again to fix the phone - which they did at an unknown time later that day.

Some other annoyances: No LAN/Fax/phone/electric socket right on the writing desk in the room - it's all on the floor under the desk, so you have to crawl around. And no WiFi in the room. I think this is unacceptable for a brand new built 5*+ hotel.

The suite itself is really nice. They did a great job in building this hotel but the service and some other details need improvement.

F&B

We ordered in Room Service for dinner as our dinner plans fell apart at the last minute. We ordered very simple food -- a cheeseburger with fries, french onion soup, a chicken panini, and caesar salad. The food was decent if not again aggressively salted. The meal was fairly timely (late by 7 minutes) but was not very hot by the time it arrived.

Breakfast:

The quality of the breakfast was decent but nothing mind-blowing. Service was awkward and not particularly attentive. Eggs were cooked to perfection and the coffee was excellent.

Service

I understand that we visited at a terribly busy time but fundamental service gaffes pervaded the hotel part of our stay. I think the hotel cannot handle the volume of business for its size and it most certainly did not handle the chaos very well.

I had to prompt the hotel at almost every step -- the service was not effortless or intuitive; at best, it was reactive and only when prompted. We had requested turn down at a certain time, but housekeeping came at their convenience. When we asked her to return later, we were told that she could not come back.

Such issues marred what could have been a wonderful stay and should not have happened at a hotel of supposed calibre as the Ritz Carlton.
