Very nice hotel just a 2 min walk from the main square. Hotel modern and very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble.

I would recommend staying here.

5 of 5  Fantastic Location!, A TripAdvisor Member, London, United Kingdom, November 17, 2008

Following a recent visit to Ypres we decided to stay at the Novotel Ieper Centrum. The hotel is in an absolutely fantastic location right in the heart of this pretty town.

On arrival we parked in the hotel car park, which is a secure underground facility and is charged at 10 Euros a day for hotel guests only. This was very good value considering that the pay and display parking on the street around the square was 3 Euros for 2 hours.

The reception staff were extremely helpful and spoke very good English. We were very impressed by the size of the rooms which had a separate shower and toilet. There was also a sofa in the lounge area, which was very nice. Our room was spotless and very modern.

We did not eat in the hotel restaurant but we did have a drink in the hotel bar, which is open until 1am. This was very nice and not very expensive considering the price of most hotel bars I have visited. We did however have breakfast in the hotel, which was both a hot and cold buffet. This was a little crowded but probably due to it being so close to Remembrance Day.

This hotel is excellent value for money and well worth a visit when staying in Ypres.

Please see my tip for tours should you be looking to do any sightseeing on your trip.

5 of 5  I love this hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Aussie in England, August 1, 2008

This is a great Hotel in a great location. We have stayed here twice now and it has not let us down. The staff are very curteous and have very good english, the rooms are spacious with a double and single bed and seperate toilet. Everything is clean and fresh. I was able to get a great deal through their website for a room that included breakfast (otherwise an expensive 17 euro each). The evening meal was also delicious. It is very close to Menin Gate and the central square. This was a lovely way to finish our tour of the battlefields.

5 of 5  JEFF SE ENGLAND, A TripAdvisor Member, kent, SE England, May 15, 2008

The hotel has good sized rooms, friendly English speaking staff and ideally located being just a couple on minutes walk from the Market Square and the Menin Gate.

Evening meals are of good quality, as are they from other eateries around the square and breakfast is buffet style offering a choice of hot or cold to suit all tastes.

Unable to associate with the prices being listed, maybe our wealthy American cousins are being ripped off?

We got a 3 nights for 2 package, travelling Eurostar from Ashford to Brussels that also provided the onward rail ticket from Brussels to Ypres (Leper) including breakfast at the hotel for £139.00 all in via Rail Bookers.

We thought the value was excellent, so much so that we have rebooked to go back in December on a 3 for 2 again to visit the Ypres Christmas Market and this time we're even taking our other halves (a reminder to forget credit cards) and for the same price of £139.00.

A useful tip; Depending on what time of year you travel it is adviseable to take quality wet weather gear.

5 of 5  Great hotel and good location, A TripAdvisor Member, Cardiff, Wales, May 8, 2008

Booked this hotel through Eurotunnel Holidays and got 3 nights for the price of 2. New, comfortable hotel with nicely decorated rooms. The rooms are clean and fresh and the maids were friendly and efficient. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room. One of the quietest hotels I`ve stayed in. Breakfast was superb and served in a light and airy room with friendly and efficient staff. There is also a bar and a restaurant on site, although prices are higher than nearby establishments. A 50 metre walk brings you onto the main square opposite the Cloth Hall and you are within easy walking distance of the Menin Gate. If you have a car, parking is available in the hotel's underground car park at 10 euros a day, but it is safe and secure and you can come and go as you wish, using an automated card. The only word of caution is that if you book a twin room, you get a double bed and a pull out couch. A guest with back problems was complaining that a bar across the couch was not good for his back and he could feel it under the mattress so if you have a bad back take note! To be fair, this hotel exceeded my expectations and is in a great location. I would thoroughly recommend it. Well done Novotel!

5 of 5  Highly recommended, A TripAdvisor Member, England, May 2, 2008

Excellently located modern hotel with underground car park.

Good modern rooms and public areas. Pleasant and efficient staff. Good buffet breakfast.

Highly recommended.

5 of 5  Spacious place, A TripAdvisor Member, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom, March 31, 2008

This hotel was a great place to stay in Ieper, it was fairly easy to find once inside the city walls, as we stumbled upon it without actually realising we had found it. The car park was charged, which was not expected, although it was under the hotel, convenient and secure and for only 10 Euro for 24 hours, it was fairly cheap.

The hotel was very close to the Menin Gate, which was one of the main reasons for our visit. It was also, just off the main town square and so Belgium chocolate and good food close by.

The rooms were of a generous size with a separate toilet to the bathroom which was quite unusual!

Overall, a good hotel, which provided value for money.

5 of 5  Excellent Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Burton on Trent, England, October 23, 2007

Stayed at this hotel whilst visiting the battlefields and was very pleasantly suprised by the quality of the accomodation.

The rooms were very spacious and modern and the breakfasts were excellent.

We found; although the bar was a little expensive, it was a good meeting place and had a good atmosphere. The restaurant looked very nice but cannot comment on the quality of evening meals as we ate in the square every night. The main reason for eating in the square was down to its close location. Both the Menin Gate and the square were no more than 5 mins walk away.

5 of 5  Ieper (Ypres) Novotel - great hotel and excellent value, A TripAdvisor Member, Olney, Bucks, England., September 21, 2007

We stayed for one night on 26th August 2007 and can thoroughly recommend it. The location is excellent, a few minutes walk from the main square and the Menin Gate, and the room we stayed in was huge even for a family of four! The hotel is modern and extremely well kept, with friendly staff and a great breakfast buffet which was included in the very reasonable price. We had an evening meal there which was excellent (the best steak I've had for a long time), if somewhat pricey. Kids are welcome and there is a childrens' playroom and a couple of Play Stations near the dining area for them to use. Don't use the hotel's underground car park though, which is 10 euro per night I think - there is free parking around the corner near the church. Ieper (Ypres) is a pretty town, easy to walk around and the Flanders Fields Museum is interesting; the Menin Gate ceremony at 8.00pm daily is also a must if you're there (but you need to arrive by 7.30pm I would say if you want to be at the front of the crowd - though this does vary depending on time of year and weather). There are plenty of bars/restaurants around the main square or nearby if you don't want to stay in the hotel and the cherry beer, Belgian chocolate and waffles are to be recommended!

5 of 5  Great location and great hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, portsmouth, September 16, 2007

The hotel is located just off the main square in Ypres and 3 minutes walk from Menin Gate

The hotel is modern and clean. The evening meal available is of a good standard and there is a comfortable bar area. The staff are all friendly and helpful

This is a great hotel for the money

5 of 5  Novotel really good hotel exceeded our expectations, A TripAdvisor Member, wantage uk, August 14, 2007

Just returned from an amazing weekend at this hotel. we are a family group and the children have already asked when we can return, it is the best hotel we have stayed in (to quote them). The staff are friendly and all speak english. Breakfast was a choice of hot and cold food with a separate breakfast table for the children to make their choices from they even got a small toy with their breakfast. The bar staff were pleasant and polite as well stopping to talk about our day and advising on where would be good to visit. Our rooms were clean and spacious. The hotel is only a short walk to the Menin Gate well worth a visit, The Flanders Field Museum again well worth a visit even the children enjoyed it.

5 of 5  Superb, A TripAdvisor Member, Surrey, August 6, 2007

Stayed here for 3 nights in August on a WW1 trip. We were blessed with wonderful weather which considering the weather we have had in the UK this summer was a bonus. The hotel is a very short walk from the main square which is simply delightful with lots of character. The Menin Gate is only a 5 minute walk and a must to see. There is also a lovely walk through a park just off the Menin Gate which is enclosed by a large moat. Ypres is full of many historical places with good museums on WW1.

We found the Novotel Hotel to be one of the best hotels we have stayed in. Good value for money, the rooms were spotless with a seperate toilet which made a pleasant change, the air con in our room was very effective and much needed with the temporary heat wave we were experiencing. There are complimentary tea and coffee making facilities in the room but it would be advisable to take extra suppies with you as they are only replaced daily. Breakfast was included in our stay with a vast array of hot and cold food. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would highly reccommend this hotel and will definately stay again.

5 of 5  Excellent location! Great value!, A TripAdvisor Member, So Cal, July 23, 2007

Stayed in Ypres for two nights. Found the Novotel to be a wonderful choice for our visit. The room was clean, comfortable, quiet, and modern (room 422). The breakfast was very good for everyone in the family - children included. Parking was very adequate, in a private underground garage. And the hotel's location was an incredibly short walk from the central market square and the Menin Gate. Ypres itself is a wonderfully charming town.

5 of 5  Excellent value at the Novetel, A TripAdvisor Member, Cleveland England, July 17, 2007

We spent three days in Ypres, staying at the Novetel, it was excellent value. The room was clean and comfortable and the buffet breakfast was very good, the staff were pleasant and helpful and we were able to park the car in the under ground car park at a reasonable fee and use the local transport during our visit.. The hotel was just yards from the main square and the Menin Gate which provided plenty of atmosphere. We usually stay at another hotel in Ypres but on future visits we will most certainly stay at the Novetel again

5 of 5  Excellent Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Ascot, June 7, 2007

Stayed her with my wife and 14 year old son for a couple of nights at the end of May. I can only agree with the positive comments of previous reviewers. Staff were friendly and the room was spotless. Excellent value - we booked in advance via the Accor/Novotel website and paid £106 for two nights in a triple room....and that included breakfast. If I was to be picky, the hotel needs to replace the carpet in the lifts which looks a bit 'tired'....minor really! Breakfast on the second morning was lukewarm (somebody had turned the hotplate off early) but overall there was plenty of choice and - as buffets go - it was fine. The hotel is popular with passing coach groups, and has a pleasant and reasonably priced bar. Car parking is fairly easy and cheap on the streets outside. The hotel is only 100 yards from the main square and little more from the Menin Gate. Ypres - despite its tragic past - is a lovely little town.

5 of 5  Perfect Location, BEAUTIFUL HOTEL, A TripAdvisor Member, N.Ireland, September 9, 2006

We stayed on 4th September 2006 for 3 nights!

OFFER: I managed to get this hotel on a '3 nights for the price of 2' , by searching through a few websites! Only £160 for 2 people, for 3 nights, including breakfast!

FLIGHT: We flew REALLY cheaply, by Ryanair -Dublin to Charleroi.

ARRIVE: At Charleroi 'Airport Ticket Desk'- we bought a ticket to Ypres (only 10.50 Euro each),

A Coach sits outside & leaves regularly for a 5min journey to Charleroi train station. We went downstairs and asked for times of the train to Ypres, they printed us out the jouney times etc (all spoke English well) We found the platform on the screen and caught the train! Journey time: 1hr 10mins, change once at Brussels Midi station.

ARRIVE AT YPRES (IEPER) station: Come out of the station and walk straight across the road, keep walking though the town (we asked someone here for directions with the hotel address), you will come to the most beautiful square. You can see The Menin Gate at the end of one of the streets into the square, just off to the right was the Hotel (signposted).

THE NOVOTEL HOTEL: Reception and dining area was open plan and modern. Staff polite, friendly and helpful. Our bedroom was quiet, big, modern, immaculately clean, kettle with tea and coffee. All our English channels on TV, there were even speakers through to the bathroom, which was spotless, modern with a fabulous shower/bath. Breakfast was a huge selection, a buffet of hot and cold food, cereals, fresh fruit, joghurts, sausages, bacon, scrambled egg, cold meats, cheese, and any amount of breads.

For travelling to different areas from the hotel, they can print you out clear, easy to follow details of trains, buses etc just for your destination.

We literally walked out of the hotel and turned right, (towards the square), at the end of the street turn right and we could see the Menin Gate! We were searching for more information on my grandfathers death in 1917, his name is on the Menin Gate. The Hotel was central to everything, cafes, shops, restaurants, tours, museum, we didn't want to leave! Book this hotel for a relaxing break in Ypres!

5 of 5  1st class!!, A TripAdvisor Member, January 19, 2006

we arrived after a VERY long overland trip by coach/ferry/ trains, from uk to a very warm, clean and central hotel only a few minutes walk to the menin gate. the hotel staff were very helpful and always had time to answer our questions. The room was very clean and comfortable, if we had one 'complaint'and that is too strong a word! it would be that,as there was only one person on bar duty who was also setting up for the wonderful free breakfast, we had to wait quite a while between drinks to get served, but other than that i would highly recommend the hotel as it was one of the best weve ever stayed in. on the travel front, i strongly urge travellers to ypres NOT to travel over land, unless it is by car as it was a long, nightmare of a journey, twelve and a half hours there, and nearly 13 back! although the trains ran on time to the minute, please fly, it truely was an exhausting journey.

5 of 5  Excellent Hotel 2mins from Main Square, A TripAdvisor Member, London, UK, June 25, 2005

Very nice hotel just a 2 min walk from the main square. Hotel modern and very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble.

I would recommend staying here.

4 of 5  Position of hotel fantastic, A TripAdvisor Member, Leicester England, November 16, 2008

Just returned. Had a fab weekend. Hotel position fantastic. 2 mins walk from menin gate.Rooms bulk standard for a novotel-clean,warm,comfortable and a good size to sleep 4(double bed & double bed settee)Tea and coffee facilities in the room. Breakfast a little dissapointing could have been a little hotter..We only tried 2 restaurants. Can recommend De Trompet and Vivaldi both in main square. The steak in De Trompet was best we had ever had! Meals in both were fab.Menin gate unbelievable The Last Post is a must at 8 o clock every night. Get there early.

Market held saturday morning only good to look around.War museum also a must.

4 of 5  Novotel well worth a visit., A TripAdvisor Member, Swansea, November 4, 2008

Stayed here with my family from the 29/10/08 for 3 nights. The hotel was excellent the reception staff were very courteous and helpful and spoke very good Enlish. The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean with all the mod cons you need. Breakfast was superb but could be busy as this is a popular hotel. The bar was too pricey for me but well stocked. One barman needed a course in social skills but when told he improved his attitude. You should be aware that you will be charged 10 euros a night for car parking which I thought was a bit much but if you have a disabled badge you can park right outside very safely for free. Overall a very pleasing stay and I will stay here again. Incidentally, we went on a tour with Flanders Battlefield Tours run by Jacques and Ginebres and it was superb, Picked us up at the hotel and did a 4 hour tour which was brilliant.

4 of 5  Pleasant Hotel for a break , Close to the centre, A TripAdvisor Member, Berkshire, November 4, 2008

We stayed here for 3 days for a short break to the Western Front and Ypres. The hotel rooms are clean, well sized and pleasant with all required things and tea/coffee making facilities unusual on the continent. The 2 rooms we had were at the front overlooking the road and by the lifts but were well sound proofed and quiet. We found the breakfast buffet busy but well stocked and very good again by the local standards having had a very contiental breakfast elsewhere in Belgium. The hotel is close to the main square about 300 metres and so the restaurants are readily available and only about 500 metres to the Menin Gate this was walkable by my elderly parents. Ypres is still a beautiful town with a tragic past, but well geared to tourists. We also visited Tyne Cot and the new visitor centre there has made this a far better experience also with parking. At the hotel the underground car park is well worth using and enables you to pack up the car out of cold or inclement weather. Along the street do use the local bakery with superb Belgian Buns and a super Halloween cake we brought back.

The Novotel is definately a hotel we will use again I thoroughly recommend it.

4 of 5  Excellent despite..., A TripAdvisor Member, West Midlands, August 9, 2008

Location, facilities, bedrooms above average, worthy of four star rating. Nice touches: tea-maker in room, and at breakfast individual tea and coffee hot-jugs, fresh orange press. Nice but smallish terrace area. Only downside: hotel popular and evidently generally busy, so at breakfast staff struggled to cope with numbers, resulting in tables not being cleared in time or properly re-set, and foodstuffs, tea/coffee ran out quickly and were not replenished promptly enough.

Michel Parfois-Sage.

4 of 5  Good location, Comfy hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, London, May 25, 2008

We've just returned from a trip to Ypres and highly recommend staying at the Novotel.

The room while basic, was bigger than expected having a double bed and a single bed (cunningly disguised as a sofa but NOT a sofa bed!) and the luxury of separate toilet to the shower room.

The staff in the hotel were always pleasant and the condition of the room was great, with it being cleaned to a high standard.

As a tip food wise, there is a fantastic bakery about a minute away from the hotel, on the same street and towards the Grote Markt. She sells all manner of goodies, but the sandwiches are beautiful and freshly made and much better value than any of the restaurants on the main square. We had breakfast from the bakery on both our mornings and it was very tasty and much cheaper than the breakfast on offer at the hotel.

Also if you are looking for a trip to the battlefields I can't recommend highly enough Salient Tours. They operate out of the Grenadier bookshop on the road that leads to the Menin Gate, and you can book online before hand. Do the morning and afternoon tours and you will be shown a massive array of historical sites as well as visiting moving cemeteries.

If you are going to the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate stand up the end which is furthest from the town as that is where the bugle players stand and is less likely to be a crush. Make sure you get there early though! Also the In Flander's Field museum is definitely worth a look

4 of 5  COMFORTABLE, SPACIOUS ROOMS, GREAT LOCATION - LITTLE TO FAULT, A TripAdvisor Member, Ipswich, May 10, 2008

Our party of 3 stayed in three separate rooms on 8 May 2008. The friendly reception received was refreshing after a previous 2 nights in France. Our rooms were adjacent, spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable, with a double bed and settee, toilet and separate shower. They also had tea/coffee making facilities which was a pleasant surprise as this wasn't advertised. Our rooms were 'inward' facing so we had no view.

It's a Novotel so you know what to expect to a degree, however, we enjoyed the ambience of the hotel and the helpful staff. We didn't have an evening meal but there are many restaurants situated close by - another plus is the location and the hotel is just a few minutes walk from the Menin Gate.

Breakfast was extra at 17 Euros but there was a very good choice so overall not bad value for money. The only downside was the charge for parking but we managed to avoid this by finding a space close by in the street. Overall, an enjoyable stay and would have no hesitation in returning.

4 of 5  You would struggle to to find a "more suitable" place, A TripAdvisor Member, Midlands, England, March 26, 2008

It is ideally located, clean, comfortable, great shower, great breakfast buffet,it is ideal.

I visited with my wife and daughter and found Ypres to be a most charming, clean and picturesque place with many interesting places to visit, be it connected to WW1.

The last post played at the Menin Gate is very moving and a must do.

Lots of restaurants around the Grote Market square, but be aware, this place can be pricey

4 of 5  Yeah fine, A TripAdvisor Member, Brisbane, Australia, January 14, 2008

About 1.5km from the train station via the main streets of Ypres. Very close to the Markt and Menin Gate. A normal modern hotel with normal modern hotel rooms and facilities. Included breakfast was good, staff helpful. Would stay here again.

4 of 5  It's A Good Pick!, A TripAdvisor Member, staaten island, new york city, December 30, 2007

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It's centrally located just steps from the town square and it's a clean, well designed and furnished hotel. we loved our spacious room with a great view of the street below. The hotal staff was very kind and helpful. We found no problems with this hotel, and I'd recommend it to anyone going to Ieper (Yres).

4 of 5  The Novotel has it all, A TripAdvisor Member, Down Under, September 14, 2007

The Novotel in Ieper was a jewel in the desert after some previous dodgy accomodation in Metz and Saint Quentin. The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of town and only minutes away from the Menin gate and other attractions in the town centre. The rooms were spacious and well appointed and very clean and the staff friendly and helpful.

Our only criticisms would be that the dining room was too crowded at breakfast time , the internet availablity that was verbally promised to be included cost another €20. Car parking in the hotel car park was another €8.00 per night but there was plenty of car parking in the church grounds next door.

Overall excellent value for € 79 per night B&B

4 of 5  Very Pleasant Stay, A TripAdvisor Member, Milan, Italy, May 16, 2007

This hotel is modern and with little character but if you are spending your days exploring WW1 battlefields (as we were) it is a perfect place to stay. Minutes from the lovely main square where there are plenty of restaurants and bars and also very close to Menin Gate making it extremely easy to attend the ceremony each evening. Our room was large and quite pleasant and the shower worked well. The staff were nice and the bar a welcome place in the evening to relax. There was plenty to eat at breakfast. We only had dinner at the hotel once in a group sitting (we were on a WW1 tour) and the food was excellent. Overall we enjoyed our stay and when we return to Ieper we will certainly consider staying here again.

4 of 5  Novotel was great, A TripAdvisor Member, London, May 7, 2007

I have always avoided chain hotels - but a friend booked me into this one - and it was great.

Incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Very knowledgeable about the area.

Rooms were big, very comfortable, quiet and clean.

Absolutely no atmosphere - but didn't matter - as Novotel in a fantastic location so that you got the feel of Ypres as soon as you walk out the door. 1 min to square.

Maybe time to review my NO-Novotel policy.

4 of 5  my favourite hotel in Ypres, A TripAdvisor Member, Ireland, April 25, 2007

Together with 2 sisters and a brother-in-law we stayed at the Novotel during our first visit to Ypres. It was excellent in all respects - the location is great because it is just around the corner from the main square. Rooms spacious and have all the mod cons. Food excellent too, and the staff were most helpful. I would not stay anywhere else!

4 of 5  I agree, A TripAdvisor Member, Cambridgeshire, October 29, 2006

I agree with all the complimentary reviews. We had a 2 night stay; the English speaking staff were very friendly and helpful. The room a good size for 2 (less so if there had been 4 of us,as there were 4 beds- a large double and a single with pull out underneath) It was clean and efficient.

I do not recommend eating there, except breakfast which was extensive, both hot and cold and never too crowde though the hotel was pretty full. In the evening service was very slow although few tables were occupied. a lot of the menu was unavailable, that meant there were no desserts at all, not even ice cream. What we did have was meagre sized portions and lukewarm.

4 of 5  Good overnight stop, A TripAdvisor Member, Dudley UK, June 17, 2006

We have used the Novatel a few times now for overnight stays while on route into Germany. Its in an excellent spot and there is ample parking in the street. There is a sauna and gym on the first floor but it does not seem to be well signed. The cost at the hotel is very resonable with 3 of us staying for around £58-£60, but the breakfast works out expensive at £9 each. There is ample cafe's in the square that offer a lot better value. We always look out for the English newspapers near the bar so we can catch up on the news

4 of 5  Well placed hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Buckinghamshire, UK, June 5, 2006

This hotel was very clean, everywhere, and it was quiet. An excellent location on a street just off of the main square, a 10 minute walk from the station and close to the Menin Gate. Whatever the Novotel lacks in character it makes up for in being a comfortable and convenient place to stay. Skip the breakfast - get a delicious coffee and patisserie in the square instead, if you have time.

4 of 5  Excellent location, A TripAdvisor Member, West Yorkshire, June 4, 2006

We stayed at the hotel on a short visit to Ypres. The hotel was excellently situated, just two minutes walk to the main square. A good selection of foods at breakfast that will suit all appetites. Very pleasant staff and not over priced drinks in the hotel bar. Would definately stay here again.

4 of 5  Good Hotel Close to City Centre, A TripAdvisor Member, London, May 9, 2006

Clean, modern hotel with English speaking staff, and only 2 mins walk to main square and Menin Gate. Ideal location for WW1 Battlefield Tours.

4 of 5  great for menin gate and salient, A TripAdvisor Member, retford, April 27, 2006

comfy, clean, meet people in the bar, good for 1.w.w. people.

3 of 5  Great Location, A TripAdvisor Member, North Essex, November 4, 2008

I have just spent 3 nights in the Novotel whilst touring the battlefields. The hotel is idealy located for touring the area and is situated just off of the market square. I used their underground car park which cost 10 Euros per 24 hours.

I found the hotel to be clean and the staff very friendly. Breakfast was plentiful and varied with both hot and cold option. It was of buffet style and you helped yourself.

Rooms were of a good size and well maintained. Tea and coffee making facilities were included and there was a mini bar. Sadly a twin room is one double bed and a sofa bed and the double bed is pretty hard - I overcame this by putting the single mattress off of the pullout bed on top of the double bed! Not ideal but it helped me sleep!

I would consider this hotel to be good value for money, especially when you make use of the 3 nights for the price of 2 offer.

3 of 5  Nice Hotel - Great Location, A TripAdvisor Member, Franklin, Massachusetts, September 25, 2008

The Novotel is located right in the Ypres town square and walking distance to numerous restaurants, shops, Flanders Field Museum, Menin Gate and the Lille Gate (walkable, but farther away).

We booked a non-refundable rate of 78 EUR, which I thought was a good rate for this type of business hotel. Our room was large with a double bed and a pull out sofa, air conditioning, and TV. The only complaint with our room, was the smoke smell, but we tolerated it for the one night.

There is secure parking under the hotel for 10 EUR, but you can probably find free public parking if you try. The front desk clerks speak perfect English and were friendly and professional.

There is a lounge and restaurant in the Hotel, but with so many places right in the town square we did not eat any meals in the hotel.

3 of 5  Adequate but in a great location, A TripAdvisor Member, London, England, August 26, 2008

Recently stayed three nights at this property at a very good rate which included breakfast.

Check in was polite and efficient but they really ought to have more staff on duty - there were long queues most of the time but the receptionist did keep cool.

The room was large but vaguely depressing, the orange and blue scheme not helping. It was good to see tea and coffee making facilities and a new flat screen TV. Unfortunately the king size bed was uncomfortable and the sythetically filled pillows were too.

House keeping was hit and miss - there were long black hairs in the bath and vanity unit when we checked into the room but everything was changed fresh each day needed or not.

The bathroom had a separate WC which is unsual but the arrangement worked very well. The bathroom was modern and module in design, quite clever really but towels were small and thin and the complementary shower gel was as thin and weak as water - take your own!

Breakfast was adequate, a hot and cold selection but the hot selection ran out quickly and was not replenished very often sometimes not at all. At EUR 17 it is very expensive and not worth it but it was included in our room rate.

The staff were very friendly and helpful - they made dinner reservations for us which was a great help. There is an underground car park which is convenient at EUR 10 per 24 hours. There is free parking near by but life is too short to start driving around looking or waiting for a space to become available.

The hotel is very central, just off the main square and around the corner from the Menin Gate.

We had a great stay in Ieper and recommend it. We learnt a lot about WW I and found it all a very moving experience. We dined at De Ecurie which was excellent, if pricey, Pacific Eiland which was not as good as De Ecurie (and more expensive) and at Grand Cru Fondu, which was great fun and also excellent.

3 of 5  good location, A TripAdvisor Member, croydon london, March 13, 2008

stayed at this hotel for three nights it was clean and tidy as you would expect from a novotel we had breakfast included in our room rate which was helpful as the breakfast works out at £13 per head allthough the buffet breakfast was adequate £13 was expensive so use the accor website for best deals we ate out in the evening so did not use the hotel restaurant which we never saw anybody use we also used the hotel underground carpark at 10 euro per day you can get free street parking if you make the effort to look. the location of the hotel is great for the menin gate which we went to each night and the town square is even closer

with plenty of places to eat and drink try old tom restaurant so a decent hotel in a good location one i would use again

3 of 5  OK but overpriced, A TripAdvisor Member, London UK, February 14, 2008

Stayed here for one night as we were passing Ieper. The hotel is very close to the main square and is comfortable enough but at over 100 Euros it does not represent good value for money. The breakfast was Euro 17 each was is a rip-off. There is an excellent bakers/cake shop just down the road which has exquisite stuff so we just bought a couple of lovely Belgian cakes and had them! The bar and restaurant are very small and don't have much atmosphere. I would suggest it's OK for 1 night but I wish i had read the reports about the Albion Hotel first,

3 of 5  Convenient Location, A TripAdvisor Member, Haacht, January 3, 2008

This hotel offers comfortable and clean rooms. Breakfast wasn't so good. There were too much guests and not enough staff to clean it up. Breakfast itself was so and so. Not much choice and the scrambled eggs were very white and absolutely tasteless. I think they used flour to mix it with the eggs. Dinner was better, but just one guy to serve, so it took us hours to finish dinner. The location however is great for visiting Ypres and the rooms are OK.

One tip: if you want to see the Last Post at the Menengate, which starts every evening at 8:00pm, make sure that you are there at 7:30 pm. Normally there are a lot of people and you don't see a thing when your are in the back rows.

3 of 5  Good location, A TripAdvisor Member, Oxford, England, November 10, 2007

A bog-standard Novotel, this hotel's main selling point is its location a few minutes walk from the Menin Gate, the Linen Hall and the attractive town centre. It offers chargeable parking, but free parking is available in a square a few yards away. This is the only recognisable chain hotel in town (Best Westerns are not chain hotels) and is heavily used by both individuals and groups visiting the Flanders First World War sites. Judged as such it is fine; somewhat anonymous, but entirely adequate for a short stay.

3 of 5  Our Stay, A TripAdvisor Member, west sussex, March 9, 2007

We stayed here in in Late December 2006,the Room was good, the Staff very helpful, breakfast was a tad expensive at 14.euros.The Hotel is in an ideal situation for visiting the Grote Markt, and the Menin Gate. The only down side of our stay that i can think of was that the Hotel was rather souless and had no atmosphere, plus the church Bells tended to wake you up very early on a Sunday Morning.

2 of 5  Not great for larger groups., A TripAdvisor Member, Ireland, September 26, 2008

First the good things: The hotel is a typically clean modern hotel, with good sized rooms, comfortable beds with fresh-smelling linen, decent-sized bathroom with a separate WC. The minibar with a good sized fridge with enough space to store bits and pieces in if necessary and plenty of storage.

The seating area downstairs was bright and airy and the reception staff were unfailingly pleasant. There was also a selection of TV channels in French, Dutch and English. The WIFI connection was good and seemed reasonable value - 10 hours for €15. It's location, on a quiet street, just around the corner from the Menin Gate and the Markt was ideal.

But, considering it's stock-in-trade seemed to be tour groups we often felt like an imposition, especially at dinnertime. Another group staying had heard the same and just booked B&B. Only one choice was provided - stew was given two nights running, which I thought was a bit unfair. Those that asked for something else, fish was given the second evening, but it seemingly arrived undercooked.

As I don't eat meat so I knew that I would be problematic. The first night I bought room service - the order was incorrect and I could eat only 2/3rds of it unfortunately. I did eat with the group one night - the spinach and pasta sauce was really nice - and the onion soup smelt lovely (it had pork stock in it unfortunately)

I was travelling with a party of mainly elderly people and they felt quite put out however. Some had booked a twin room only to find the second promised bed was actually the sofa. OK for someone my age - and those who could afford to pay for an additional room; but not for a pensioner who had been travelling since 3am that morning.

The hotel bar is expensive- but they do have some lovely wines. The food at the buffet breakfast is also *excellent* - far better than anything comparable in Ireland and many British hotels certainly.

It is a very good hotel for a place to lay your head for a few nights in the centre of town for business or to do a WWI tour, but I would strongly urge any groups thinking of booking it to do their research regarding the twin beds and be specific regarding catering requirements (e.g. request pork not be served pink, or the provision of a choice at dinnertime).

2 of 5  Handy location, was hectic with families, A TripAdvisor Member, Canberra, Australia, July 29, 2007

I stayed here with my husband while visiting the battlefields. The Novotel has an excellent location - near the Grote Market and 7 minutes walk to the Menin Gate. The lowest rates are available on the website - ours was a weekend rate with breakfast - 96 euros.

The hotel has a bright and spacious foyer with handy but limited parking in the basement. It's a fairly standard Novotel but be aware it attracts families with young children on weekends and school vacations who go to the nearby "Plopsyland" theme park. When we were there on a Friday and Saturday it was chaotic. We needed to change rooms twice to avoid the noise, and the atmosphere at breakfast (which was served in very cheerful surroundings) was fairly rowdy. Ask for a quiet room on the opposite wing from the family rooms. (Our room was 201). The dinner and lunch menus in the restaurant are limited and expensive for what they are. There's a good selection of restaurants in the nearby Grote Market.

The rooms were spacious but all toileteries were missing and our hairdryer was not working. They are also uptight about their hospitality trays. We asked at the bar for some milk sachets and were refused. It wasn't until we requested to see the duty manager that we were given some. Even then we were reminded it was a "free" service and once the items run out they would not be replaced until the next day - very petty.

Although this hotel has a lot going for it I would avoid it in school holidays and weekends if you want a quiet, relaxing time.

2 of 5  Poor attention to detail, A TripAdvisor Member, West Sussex, April 23, 2007

Stayed here in party of four guys visiting Battlefields. It looks smart and modern enough but a number of things were not quite right, suggesting that overall supervision and maintenance was a bit slipshod. Internal room security lock didn't work, neither did hairdryer. Door spy-hole had been removed leaving just a hole (Room 128 - but also noticed the same weird gap on a number of other doors.) Sheets, though clean, had holes in them. Friends also reported bulbs missing in rooms. There was plenty to eat and plenty of choice at breakfast but the hot options - bacon, egg etc - were not kept hot. None of these things were bad enough to spoil our stay - but if we'd had our wives with us it would have been another story!

1 of 5  Didn't honour the booking, A TripAdvisor Member, Sydney, May 14, 2008

I was part of a group of eighty or so who booked a tour of the Western Front. The tour was booked and payed for in excess of 6 months in advance. A few short weeks before our arrival in Belgium, a number of us were advised that the Novotel in Leper had overbooked and the alternate accomodation was the Park Hotel on Kortrijk, a significant distance from Leper. Whilst, I am advised that the hotel can provide an alternate equivalent standard of accomodation elsewhere without breaching contracts, one has to question the morality of accepting the bookings and payments in the first place. I am disappointed in the actions of the Novotel in Leper because I was deprived of the overall ambience and facility of the Leper precinct. The staff in the hotel were friendly and helpful in organising the free taxi to Kortrijk, the compensating evening meal was very basic. Very disappointed. My review of the Park Hotel i Kortrijk appears elsewhere in Tripadvisor.

1 of 5  Avoid, A TripAdvisor Member, Brighton England, October 22, 2007

We booked and paid for three rooms two months in advance, but when we arrived we were told there were no rooms available-apparently they had been given to a coach party that had arrived just ahead of us. We asked to see the manger or the duty manager but neither were on site or contactable. After a 40 minute wait the girl at reception eventually found us an inferior, cheaper hotel, 20 minutes drive away in another town.

I have written to the Hotel but have not even had the courtesy of an acknowledgement.

Avoid booking with Novotel or you may also have your stay in Ieper ruined

1 of 5  Pathetic!, A TripAdvisor Member, Canberra, September 14, 2007

We booked this hotel several months before we left and then cofirmed our booking before leaving. When we got to the hotel we were told that they had overbooked and that they had placed us at another hotel, which was nothing like the one we paid for. On top of telling us that we could not stay there, they then had the hide to turn around and say that we had two drink vouchers to THEIR hotel that we could come back and use. I DONT THINK SO! Talk about rubbing it in your face.
