2 of 5  Beware, A TripAdvisor Member, North Yorkshire, September 29, 2005

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Amathus Beach one week of which was certainly below our high expectations of this 5* Hotel. We had been there for 4 nights after which to our horror a large group of about 80 people arrived from a company in the UK. We heard varying stories why they were there ie a seminar (highly unlikely) or a treat for some shareholders. The week they were there was a nightmare. It was extremely difficult to get sunbeds and even more difficult to get served in the bars and restaurants and even around the pool. The pool bar was impossible to use as they monopolised it for hours using up all of the tables throughout the lunchtime period. Whenever they arrived in any one place the other guests were totally neglected as the waiting staff congregated around them giving them a wonderful first class service. We tried complaining even asking the Reception staff if we could see the Duty Manager but this was declined and we were told we would more or less have to put up with it.

The 7 nights they weren't there the hotel reverted back to normal and our stay was pleasant but we will not be returning and we would advise anybody wanting to stay there next September- DON'T!!

5 of 5  First Class Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, UK, June 22, 2009

This is my first stay at the Amathus Beach, hopefully, it will not be my last. We had a Twin inland view room on half board. The room was good and well maintained. Food in the La Terazza and Luna Rosa restaurants was excellent with plentiful choices. Breakfast choices catered for every taste.

This hotels greatest asset is its staff; they are courteous, friendly and efficient with one minor exception - the reception staff. We asked for a late checkout to 6pm and was given conflicting advice by the reception staff. One told us it would cost €90. We were prepared to pay the extra but when we went to pay, another receptionist told us it was free until 3pm. When the last day arrived we were told we had to vacate by 12 noon as our rooms were required. This left us wandering around for 6 hours until our departure and though they allowed us 1/2 hour use of a courtesy room to shower and change, we lost most of this time chasing up clean towels and toiletries. The lesson learnt was that if you have a late flight home, make sure your travel company arranges a late checkout - do not rely on the advice of the reception staff as we did.

Overall, an excellent hotel well worth it's 5 star rating.

5 of 5  pure bliss, A TripAdvisor Member, coleraine northern ireland, June 3, 2009

this hotel was amazing, all staff pleasant and helpful, the ladies who cleaned rooms always smiling and so kind to my 20 month grandson who was with our party.we went for my son and daughtrr in laws wedding and none of us in a party of 20 could have asked for a better venue .a little pricey but worth the extra we paid as far above any of the other hotels we saw in the area. my one and only complaint was even in a 5* hotel people still left towels on sunbeds near the pool in early morning one day i watched towels put down at 9am and no one came to sunbeds until 12 i think management should clamp down on this selfish behaviour

5 of 5  If you want a relaxing holiday and genuine service visit this hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Monmouth, May 29, 2009

May seems the perfect time to visit for great weather and if you want to visit Paphos I would recommend you stay at the Amathus Beach Hotel. Great facilities, outstanding service and a genuine warm welcome.

5 of 5  Best hotel in Pathos!, A TripAdvisor Member, Essex, May 21, 2009

I don't usually write reviews as I've never experienced an exceptional stay or dreadful hotel to bother advising others on, however I had such a wonderful stay here that I thought I'd give rave reviews on Paphos Amathus.

My wife and I had a 10 night stay here for our honeymoon. As a honeymoon couple we were upgraded to a full sea view room (from side sea view), a bottle of champagne (and sandwich snack) waiting in the room after check in, flowers and vouchers for use of the spa. The first morning we were also given a champagne breakfast in bed! We were also given a 5 course meal with a bottle of wine at the La Luna Rosa restaurant - all of which was complimentary.

Overall a very generous honeymoon package and made our stay that little bit extra special.

This is my third stay in Pathos, I have previously stayed at the Aloe and the Louis Imperial Beach hotels (both 4* and very nice) but the Pathos Amathus is worth the extra cost.

The room was spacious and spotless, in fact the whole hotel was very well maintained. Beautiful pool area and gardens, plenty of space and lots of sunbeds. There is also a small private beach (with water sports nearby- not part of the hotel though).

We were lucky enought to have a free upgrade to half board and the food in the evening was fantastic. Choice of open air italian buffet, changing buffet daily in the classy La Luna Rosa restarant or you can choose the 4 course set meal, with various options for each course (changes daily). There is also a oriential restarant (with you get an allowance towards if your half board). All the food we had (breakfast, buffets and at lunchtimes) was top quality and certainly better than al ot of the restaurants I've tried outside the hotel (as my third pathos trip we have tried quite a few!)

The only negative thing I can say is that the cost of drinks is quite high, however you come to expect that of 5* hotels and as the setting and service is so nice it is worth the extra cost.

In summary its a great location - on the beach and a 25 minutes stroll along the front to the harbour, great service and great food. A little bit more than some of the other hotel in Pathos, but in my opinion its well worth it. My best beach resort hotel by far, I'll be coming back.

5 of 5  Lovely hotel - ideal wedding location, A TripAdvisor Member, Hampshire, May 19, 2009

We stayed at the Paphos Amathus Beach Hotel in May 2009, we had our wedding here. On arrival we were met with our welcome drinks, a welcome pack for the wedding which included vouchers for a complimentary meal, Spa vouchers. We had booked an inland view room due to a spiraling wedding budget but we were upgraded to a seaview room with a half board basis on arrival.

The room was lovely, although a little bit dated compared to the rest of the hotel. The room was exceptionally clean with maid service every day.

The hotel staff were very accomodating. We had 65 people travelling with us and not all were staying in the hotel, this meant we had to arrange our reception elsewhere but the hotel did not seem to mind that at all and were helpful with the wedding arrangements and made the guests feel welcome even though we would not be using the facilities for the wedding reception.

The pool areas were lovely, and was definately appreciated after a week of manic wedding planning.

Throughout our stay we received complimentary gifts from the hotel, champagne and chocolate dipped strawberrys on the wedding day, complimentary breakfast in bed the morning after the wedding, champagne and canapes on our last night. They went out of the way to make the whole two weeks really special.

The restaurants were lovely, the breakfast buffet was amazing and the buffets which were available on the halfboard basis in the evening were fantastic. The only thing I didn't rate very highly was the free meal we received, the setting was lovely but the food was not that special - can't complain though - a very lovely evening was had.

My husband and I are in our late 20's and the clientele of the hotel is definately predominantly older unless you are with a wedding party. This only added to the nice relaxing atmosphere but I did get a few bad looks whilst sitting in the bar area arranging my wedding on my phone!

We hired a car and on our honeymoon travelled arounf the island. Paphos is a lovely place but there are so many things to see it is definately worth getting a car.

There are numerous restaurants outside of the hotel. The best definately being Ficardo's Taverna. This is a very traditional restaurant where the food is resonably priced and absolutely lovely - an ideal location for a wedding reception as well as it is off the road and only a couple of doors down from the hotel.

I would definately stay in this hotel again or another in the group.

5 of 5  Wow - A one off, A TripAdvisor Member, Western Isles, May 17, 2009

We went to this hotel a bit last minute as our Honeymoon to Maldives fell through. We wanted to treat ourselves so booked a top class room with its own pool. We paid alot of money for one week but let me tell you we were no disapointed. The room was first class as was our private pool. The hotel service was first class although i found the main evening restuarant a little pretencuios... a lot of flaffing and protocol for not a great choice of food for the average customer. The hotel was very quite at that time which was fine for us. A few older German couple who love all the dressing up in the evenings with dresses and dinner jackets etc which is not really us. Because the Hotel restaurants were not open (only the main one) we had to use it for our half board flexi dine tickets and i felt abit tacky handing our tickets over ( i guess it was just that type of place). Rather than pay a fortune for lunch (£30 for cuppa and tasted sandwich for two) we went over the road to a lovely cafe most days. All stafff were well turned out and very pleasant other than a female in the restaurant that I felt looked down on us when we declined to order champange at extra cost. The very small sand/ beach area was out of use as it was full of seaweed and not cleared. The weather was nice and cool for us which was great but it was a shame about the beach area but i suspect thay dont have much call for it that time of year. All in all we enjoyed this hotel and loved our room. My main critisism was our last day we used out last flexi dine ticket at theor only open restaurant and were told after we had eaten that we had to pay extra as we had gone over the amount the ticket was worth (17 euros each apparently!) This upset me as i we had paid £2000 to Honeymoon at this hotel for a week and we had no choice of were to eat as the're pool bar etc were closed that time of year. I complained and they waved it on that occassion but the young girl in the restaurant who served us was not customer friendly when i objected until i pointed out some facts to her she realised i was not a push over and soon changed. I know i sound as if i'm moaning but these wee things make such a difference. I would love to see this hotel in full swing as it is stunning and all in all we would go back because most of the staff cannot do enough for you....however you do pay for it. Paphos itself was lovely but again i would love to see it during the season as it was very quite in December. We did enjoy our Honeymoon as we spoilt ourselves and we would return to the hotel when it was fully operational.

5 of 5  If you are planning a wedding abroad this is the place to do it...., A TripAdvisor Member, Wales, April 29, 2009

We have just returned from cyprus, staying at the amathus beach hotel in paphos, where we recently got married. From the moment you arrive at the hotel you are treated so so well. The porter greeted you with a smile and immediately you feel relaxed. Reception staff were very helpful and prompt at checking you in. We had upgraded to a junior suite and the view was fantastic let alone the sun set photos we had. If your thinking of getting married abroad this is the place. The wedding co-ordinators, Marios & George were excellent and took all the stress of the wedding off your shoulders. The day was faultless and so was the rest of the holiday. We were served canipes and champagne every other day and by day 9 of 10 we had so mucgh champagne left we had all the family in our room to help us drink it!! The wedding night is just as they promised, rose petals on the bed, chocolate covered strawberries, pink champagne and a romantic setting in your very own room all provided by the hotel. Following morning was breakfast in bed and you guessed it.......more champagne. We really were treated like special people. There were other weddings going on through the time we were there and on our day we only saw the other bride & groom because they had sun set photography done (by the way, if your looking for a fantastic photographer try... (--) - he is awesome & amazing value for money too). We left the hotel with a big smile on our faces knowing that everything and i mean EVERYTHING went so perfect. Already booking again for either later in the year or April of next year. Ps The weather was better than what the internet says so ignore what they say.

One other thing if your going here, a must restaurant for you is called ATRION (out of the hotel, turn left, about 400m on the right hand side opposite the Alexander the great hotel), 3 courses for 15.00 euros and the food to die for. The owner Matthew is great, his son the bar man is bonkers and great fun and you cant forget old Frank who greets you there everynight!! Good on them, what more can i say that dont take my word for all we have written, just go and visit................

5 of 5  Fantastic hotel, perfect wedding location, A TripAdvisor Member, Scarborough, April 14, 2009

My wife and I have just had a lovely weeks holiday at the Amathus Beach where we married in the hotel grounds. We booked our package through Sovereign and got an excellent deal that included flights transfers etc. for around half the price of the hotel website price for the room on its own !! Our room was a Privilege Junior Suite with private pool which was very well appointed. cleaned and tidied twice a day and it seemed that every time we left the room and returned there was another little treat left in the room – fruit, canapes and sparkling wine cocktails, bottles of mineral water, chocolates on our pillows etc. etc. The room had everything we expected including a free to use electronic safe a mini bar fridge with prices that were not too bad considering !! The Bvlgari toiletries in the bathroom were lovely, soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion all replenished daily along with bath, beach and hand towels.

The arrangements for our wedding were handled between our Sovereign wedding planner and the hotel management and our wishes were fully catered for and nothing seemed too much trouble although some things were a little too expensive for our pocket !!

I think that the hotels best asset is the staff and their friendly attitude and attention that they show in all areas of the hotel and grounds.

As part of our half board deal we ate in the Luna Rosa restaurant each evening and had the set menu on the first night, the food was very good with plenty of choice – 4 different starters, soups, main courses and deserts to choose from, all served with that attention to detail that the hotel prides itself on, however each night after that we enjoyed, and would recommend, the buffet – a different theme each evening – Chinese, Italian, Mediterranean, Flambe, BBQ, Carvery and all were equally delicious 4 courses including soup and nobody seemed to mind if you had more than one desert lol.

As with anything in life fault can be found if you look critically enough but we have already booked to go back to this hotel and are counting the days as well as saving like mad.

5 of 5  Relaxing 5* Hotel - Great Location in Paphos, A TripAdvisor Member, Southampton, April 11, 2009

I stayed in the Paphos Amathus for a week in March and had a great time. I booked a package hotel on a B&B basis and got a very good deal.

On arrival - we were checked in very efficiently, were handed a complimentary cocktail and were given information about special offers available. The porter collected our bags and showed us around our room. The foyer was quite impressive.

The room itself (overlooking the front of the hotel and the tennis courts) was clean and very spacious. At no point in the week could I fault the cleanliness of the room after the maid's had been in. The room came with complimentary bathrobes, slippers, fruit and local alcohol. The minibar had a good range - but was quite expensive!

Breakfast in the hotel was great - a huge selection of food was available from various buffet areas places around the room. Toast, tea and coffee is made to order - otherwise it's a case to help yourself to whatever you want. Other than breakfast, we didn't eat in the hotel - as with most 5* hotel, the price of food (including the set menu in the evening) is quite expensive. Just across the road from the hotel is a vast selection of bars and restaurants which offer a good selection of food at a fraction of the price.

The hotel has a large range of spa facilities available - for an extra cost. The tennis courts and small but well equipped gym are free to use.

The hotel is situation on the beach - although the beach was covered in seaweed given the time of the year. The outside pool was also too cold to use (even on the hot days) but the indoor pool was heated and is just large enough to have a bit of a swim in. There's a costal path that takes you almost all the way into Paphos Harbour - when I was there they were still building it. Otherwise the path by the road takes you all the way to the Harbour - about a 20 minute walk away. There's a bus stop just outside the hotel with a good service to the harbour and the old town. It took about 30 minutes to walk to the old town - but it is uphill most of the way.

Overall, I can't fault the hotel, apart from the expected 5* prices. The staff were all very friendly and efficient and the public areas were always kept very clean.

The only downside about the hotel - which had nothing to do with the hotel - was the many British reps trying to sell time share. We got stopped several times on our way to the harbour by people asking if we wanted to enter a competition... having experienced this type of thing before... take their scratch card and look at the terms and conditions on the back. If you're under the age of 30 or over 65 - you are not eligible - although they will try and convince you otherwise. And there will be something on the card that says the competition relates to a holiday ownership promotion. The reps tend to act a bit stupid if you point this out - but if you're on the ball then they'll leave you alone!

5 of 5  New Year's Eve Treat! We had a lovely stay., A TripAdvisor Member, Paphos, Cyprus, March 7, 2009

We have been to this hotel many times for wedding receptions and to visit friends whom stayed at this hotel. So I decided to book a room for New Year's Eve. We did not celebrate in the hotel but elsewhere, however we did stay for one night only.

We first had coffee. I had a cappucino in the their cafe. I found this to be of top quality and I give this thumbs up. Came with a complimentary sweet.

We booked a junior suite room which had a small garden at the back. This had a gate which opens out to the swimming pool.

The room was so nice, airy and spacious. It oozed luxury as a 5* hotel should do! The bed was large, comfortable and that night we slept like babies! There is a sofa with a coffee table with a basket of complimentary fruit accompanied by a bottle of wine. The TV was of great quality but we didn't use it.

The bathroom was clean and had marble all over! The bath and shower were just great and we loved the power pump. Lots of space.

When we were at the hotel for a wedding reception, the canapes/buffet were of marvellous quality.

I would suggest the hotel to anyone I know!

5 of 5  Perfect Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Larnaca, February 19, 2009

I stayed at the Amathus hotel for 3 nights with my boyfriend in February celebrating his birthday and Valentines day. I have only good things to say about this hotel.

The location is perfect. On the beach, indoor and outdoor pool, hotel within walking distance from everything, the service was one of the best I ve ever seen, breakfast with plenty of choices, staff polite, rooms and puplic areas sparkling clean, nu bar with live music everynight. We didnt try one of the hotel restaurants or the indoor pool in the spa but I bet that are great.

Our room was a junior suite with sea view and exactly as the one seen on the hotel internet site and including everything mentioned (bulgary amenities in bathroom, fresh flowers in room, sleepers, bathropes, coffee making facilities in room, daily newspaper in room, fruits and a bottle of champange upon arrival and a taste of small delicacies to acompanie the champange). Cleaning lady wice a day.

One of many things that left us speechless about the service of Amanthus hotel was the complimentary bottle of champange with gourmet snacks from the hotel's puplic relation manager for my boyfriends birthday and and another bottle of champange with chocolates for Valentines day.! We also had complimentary small bottle of olive oil the last day with our newspaper.

I would recommend this hotel to everyone.

We had a great time and sure we will be back in the summer!

5 of 5  Beautiful hotel with feline bonus, A TripAdvisor Member, Cheshire, January 9, 2009

I have just spent the Christmas and New Year break at this hotel with my husband, and it was brilliant. The hotel and the grounds are beautiful, and the food is excellent. In particular, the gala dinners on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve were among the best meals I have ever eaten. I am a vegetarian, and I was extremely impressed that the menu planner had gone to just as much trouble over the vegetarian menus as the ‘normal’ menus. The only tiny negative comment I have is that the main restaurant, the Luna Rosa, is staffed predominantly by young, inexperienced staff who would benefit from a little more supervision and training.

An added bonus about the hotel for cat-lovers is that a family of 8 or 9 cats lives around the hotel. They are well-fed and very affectionate!

5 of 5  Great yet again, A TripAdvisor Member, Skipton, Yorkshire, England, October 30, 2008

This was my 8th visit to Cyprus and my wife and I's 4th visit to the Amathus. As always, we had a great time. The hotel is smart and the grounds superb. Tons of sunbathing room and enough sunbeds and umbrellas for all even when the hotel was very busy in our first few days there.

We had a pool and seaview room on the 4th floor and it was excellent and the maid service kept it clean and towels changed twice a day.

We ate in only a handful of times as we were on B & B.Enjoyed the themed buffets in Luna Rosa and enjoyed the Asian restaurant. The Italian outdoors was a bit disappointing. Breakfasts really good with vast choice. Lots of places to eat out both nearby and on the way to the harbour. All those we tried were good with choice of Cypriot, Italian, French, Tex Mex etc.

As always the hotel staff in all areas were excellent with many who have been there years and recognised us from previous visits.

I do not understand critical comments about them in other reviews or about the hotel pool, lobby area etc. The pool was spotlessy clean as was the whole hotel and the lobby area is beautiful. The only people who may have a problem are those who do not like cats as the grounds have lots of them roaming about which we like.

We will keep going back. It is probably our favourite hotel anywhere and the weather in Cyprus is perfect, especially in October, and the people are so friendly.

5 of 5  A fantanstic Hotel & great holiday, A TripAdvisor Member, Essex, October 6, 2008

We stayed at The Amathus Beach Hotel in Paphos from Sept 1st-8th 2008 where we got married. We got married on the hotel grounds and I can definately say, the wedding was beauitful & we are so glad that we choose The Amathus.

I'm 24 years old & my husband is 29. The hotel is sutiable & caters for all age groups. Couples, groups & families.

It is right on the beach, although the beach is quite stoney, it is still a nice view.

This was our second visit to Cyprus but our first stay at The Amathus but will definately not be our last.

We booked our wedding package with a seperate wedding company " Cyprus Dream weddings" but recieved lots of freebies which were arranged by the hotel itself.

A Gorgeous A la carte breakfast on the morning after our wedding day, served with champagne which was delivered by room service at 9.30am.

Chocolate covered strawberrys with pink champagne on the day of our wedding, in our room whilst I was getting ready with my mum, all complimentary (Free)

On arrival, we were very welcomed with our luggage being taken to our room. All staff were very friendly. We were given a fresh juice drink on check-in, along with a freezing cold face towel to cool down.

We were given pool cards for fresh, clean towels everyday around the pool.

We were upgraded to a sea view room which was great. Very clean, tidy and very nice.

we had maids in every morning, after we left the room who changed our towels, made our bed and basically cleaned the whole room. This was also done EVERY evening throughout our stay. Chocolates were left on our pillows every night and the room had slippers which were placed by our bedside with bath robes.

There are several different restaurants at The Amathus but unfortunately we did not get to experience these as we choose to eat out every night somewhere different & because we were getting married, we had 20 guests with us, all who stayed at other hotels but we all liked to meet up for dinner each night.

The hotel has a gym, hairdressing salon and a beauty treatment salon for spas, massages etc....

We were given a free hydrobath spa.

The hotel is definately a 5*. It really is a stunning hotel. We would 100% recommend any couple to stay at The Amathus either to have your wedding or honeymoon if you choose Cyprus or just a holiday. although a little more pricer than other hotels, it is definately worth the money.

I could seriously go on forever. It is the best hotel I have ever stayed in & I have been to quite a few different places.

Cannot fault it at all and basically had the best holiday/wedding ever and that was hugely to do with The Amathus.

5 of 5  Excellent Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, London, October 2, 2008

Can't understand and dont agree with the review below. I found reception to be helpful and the general service to be first class. The food in the hotel is some of the best I've experienced in any hotel. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. The only downside to whole experience was people putting their towels down first thing in the morning. This is a problem at this hotel and many others. Before people start jumping to the conclusion that it's our German cousins that are doing this, I hardly heard any german accents during my stay. No this was the Brits and Greeks. If you want a chair by the pool, you got be down by 8.

There's good local restaurants and a fairly nice harbour to walk around. Would definitely go back.

5 of 5  Another Great Holiday, A TripAdvisor Member, Leeds, UK, October 1, 2008

This was our 8th stay at this wonderful hotel, it was better than ever. The changes in the restaurants especially the new Luna Rosa are outstanding and the food and service provided are wonderful, definately 5 star.

Every member of staff are always warm and friendly and have a smile for everyone.

We shall definately go back again next year

5 of 5  Great Hotel!, A TripAdvisor Member, thessaloniki, August 29, 2008

We (wife, 14 month son and I) went to the Paphos Amathus for a weekend break. Though not the best weekend to be in Paphos (they humidity was breathtaking- literally), the hotel and most importantly the service made it all worth it!

Upon entering the hotel, our luggage was swiflty taken care of and we were offered (much needed) welcoming drinks while filling up the necessary forms.

The whole lobby area seemed recently renovated with some impressive elements, yet you could still see some nineties touches left there in the mix...not sure the mix worked particularly well but in any case the result is by no means unpleasant.

Entering our room we were at first a bit thrown back from the late eighties/ early nineties decor, but the size of the room and its cleanliness more than made up for it.

We headed down to the swimming pool, where we actually spent most of the weekend anyway, and there you see where the value of this hotel really lies...The whole pool area and the surrounding gardens ARE the hotel... And all this without the snottiness you find in other luxury hotels.

What really impressed me though throughout our stay was the level of service which was faultless...Though admittedly a cute toddler always helps, every member of staff was friendly and helpful and made us want to go back again....

I also want to mention the food there. Although we didn't have the chance to try the restaurants in the hotel because of my son's weird sleeping hours, we ordered room service. Food was out of this world! A bit on the expensive side obviously, but the prices were at par with other 5-star hotels. Breakfast was also fantastic and the buffet seemed endless!

5 of 5  Just excellent!, A TripAdvisor Member, Prague, July 21, 2008

This is an excellent Hotel!! Before we stayed in Amathus Limassol several times but this time we decided to explore Paphos and of course we choose Paphos Amathus since we trust a lot this hotel group. The hotel is quite different from Amathus Limassol but everything was just perfect as well. We had a Sea view room and it was just lovely! I think if we come to paphos next time maybe we shall take even a suite. They have very good cousine and all restaurants have something different so you may choose what you like the best. I like Amathus Spa very much and this time I also took some treatments. So in general everything was excellent but this is what we expected from this hotel. I higly recommend this property to evrybody!

5 of 5  Fun in the sun!, A TripAdvisor Member, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, July 17, 2008

What a hotel - booked with First Choice and our rep Kate was really nice, everything ran really smoothly, can't fault them at all!

Fabulous lagoon style pool and the swim up bar is just wicked, the cocktails are amazing, tried a few I hadn't before, which is always good.

There were lots of kids there when we were over there but I guess seeing as this hotel isn't adults only (shame); and am used to adults only all inclusives so a bit of an eye-opener really!

Rooms are top quality, very comfortable.

Nu Bar has an excellent Elton John tribute on Tuesday evenings, don't laugh but he really is quite good and the bar was always packed. Don't bother going any other time as it is pretty much dead and the other singers are not that good!!! ha ha. The drinks are yummy in this bar, especially the pink moet, the Alina wine and the Long Island Ice Tea. Don't mix them though, like I did, or else you can end up very drunk indeed!!! lol!

The asia chi restaurant is top draw but quite expensive, if you venture outside to the right hand side of the hotel there is a nice thai called 'Koi' which is lovely. Again all restaurants seem to have a good selection of imported wine and champagne, which is always a bonus. They even do Ruinart over there which I was impressed with. Also the italian restaurant is nice there too.

The hotel also has some cats that hang around which are lovely, they are so cute, and sit on the sun loungers.

The Spa is great, I had a facial there and bought some Decleor products, top treatments and very kind staff.

Met some nice people around the pool and in the bars in the evenings, were very friendly, but that depends on when you go I guess!

The breakfasts were ok, didn't bother going down everyday as it did get really busy and the staff were a bit thin on the ground and a bit rude....It was a buffet but hit and miss as regards if you actually got asked if you wanted coffee/tea/toast etc. As we booked BB we got a free HB upgrade which was ok for lunch or dinner but to be honest the best food is to be found outside of the hotel....I have a serious food allergy and when asked what some of the dishes contained the staff didn't know and made no effort to find out. One night i had to take medication as one of the olive oils wasn't labelled correctly and contained basil/pesto which iam allergic to.......fun and games!

The decor of the hotel is very modern and like a boutique hotel, would definately return, going to book again for 2009 with my girlfriends for a party-time week away!

:)

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Amathus I can honestly say It was the perfect holiday.

The food was great with various restaurants to eat in and all the staff were very happy, helpful, polite and friendly.

The seating in and out of the hotel was very good and the room was very nice we had a side sea view. drinks were a little on the expensive but this is a 5 star Hotel.

People who give this hotel negatives must be looking for UTOPIA.

We are going back next year as many of the guests return year after year.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at The Amathus Beach Paphos.

Can not praise it enough the perfect holiday for my wife and I the food was very good with a wide choice from various restaurants all the staff were polite and very obliging nothing was too much.

The grounds were very well cared for and the outside seating was the best we have had.

We will return next year all being well

A good tip we paid 90 euros to keep our room until departure which was 19.30 much better than being a Refugee for the day.

5 of 5  A Wonderful Holiday!, A TripAdvisor Member, Dingwall, United Kingdom, May 16, 2008

We have just returned from a wonderful fortnight's holiday at the Paphos Amathus Beach Hotel. The rooms are large, comfortable, modern and clean. The domestic staff are dedicated, careful and pay great attention to cleanliness. Ok, so they sometimes forget to replace the soap or tissues, but they are always in the corridor somewhere and are only too happy to provide you with whatever you want - we couldn't fault them. The quality of the soaps, shampoos and shower gels etc is not great, but they're perfectly adequate unless you really expect a brand or label of some sort. We simply ignored the silly notices saying you couldn't eat or drink anything you'd brought in and it was never a problem, despite the bin being full of empties, wrappers and peel etc every day. The prices of wine and drinks at the hotel are extortionate, so we would have a drink in our room before dinner and confine ourselves to water and a glass of house wine in the restaurant. The AsiaChi and Rotisserie are also outrageously expensive and are best avoided, as there are plenty of excellent restaurants available within easy walking distance outside, if you want to eat out. We were on a free half board upgrade and this made all the difference, as the food in La Luna Rosa and the Byzantium was excellent. The buffet menu changes every night and we were really spoilt for choice. The restaurant staff are also excellent and make a big effort to make you feel special. The breakfast selections are sensational, the best we have ever had. The entertainment varies and was always pleasant, with the violinists in the Byzantium being particularly good. The outdoor pool and facilities are first class - we had no trouble at all getting loungers wherever we wanted at any time - the pool attendants are terrific and will help you or get you whatever you want at any time. The loungers are the most comfortable we have ever had and the layout of the whole poolside area, right down to the sea, is exceptionally well designed, maintained and serviced. We used the gym every day, more or less, or went to the classes at 10:30 every morning - there's a new Hungarian fitness instructor there at the moment - Monica - and she is so enthusiastic, encouraging and happy with her job - we were sorry to leave her at the end. There was no charge for the classes. The gym is a bit small, but the equipment is modern, well maintained and perfectly adequate for our needs, though it lacked a rower. The indoor pool and the new lap pool is heated and was sometimes too warm for our liking, but very pleasant none the less. Some people have complained about Reception, but we always found them to be helpful, pleasant and quick to help us whenever we had a query or problem, which wasn't very often. The pub on the corner outside the hotel was a godsend, as they showed all the footy that we would otherwise have missed, though there were others showing the footy further away. The local beer and wine is cheap and excellent, the owners are very welcoming and friendly and we had lunch there quite often. The Amathus claims to be one of the Leading Hotels in the World, but it doesn't quite live up to this expectation, in my opinion. It is a genuinely first class hotel, the facilities and services are excellent, but it is let down by the exorbitant prices they charge in their bars and restaurants. The strange thing is that if you're on half board and want to eat in the Rotisserie or Asiachi, then you get a 19 euro discount and pay the difference, but if you have to pay for the buffet in La Luna Rosa or Byzantium, then it costs you 34 euros! All in all, we had a great holiday there and I would very happily go back. I think it's very good value for money if you can get a deal that includes half board, otherwise it looks a little expensive.

5 of 5  I will return..., A TripAdvisor Member, Sutton Coldfield , UK, December 31, 2007

As one of the organisers of a golfers 'exploration party' ,the PABH was an excellent base for our visits to the three golf courses ,all within 30 minutes travelling distance away.

The welcome at the hotel , the location by the beach and yet handy for the town, the friendliness of the staff, the rooms, the bars and restaurants , could not be faulted.

Early breakfasts were required , and the most amazing spread & selection were provided.Four nights were perfect for a golf break , but more would be needed there for a relaxing beach & historical/archeological visiting holiday. Without doubt , I will return....

5 of 5  Agree with the Member from Yorkshire, A TripAdvisor Member, England, October 25, 2007

Like the member from Yorkshire we really like the Paphos Amathus. We have been four times but unfortunately didn't get there this year as we went to the Oceana in Hammamet and the Four Seasons in Limassol. We have always received a warm welcome and would agree that the sunbathing areas are very nice. It is a hotel we would always return to for relaxation in comfort with good friendly service. Yes you can say that Paphos is tacky but there are a number of very nice restaurants in the immediate area and if you take a trip

a bit further afield to the Troodos mountains or surroundng villages you will see the real Cyprus which is wonderful.

5 of 5  Incredible experience, A TripAdvisor Member, Toronto, October 10, 2007

My husband and I stayed here for 1 week of our honeymoon. From the minute we arrived the staff went above and beyond our expectations. We booked a room with a private plunge pool with a jacuzzi function. When we checked in there was already a bottle of rosé bubbly on ice for us as well as water and a fruit platter. 3 times during the week we had canapés and apperatifs delivered to our room. We would often come back to our room and find a bottle of sparkling on ice and more fruit. The staff were so polite and went out of their way to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. I was especially impressed with one manager whom I saw speaking at least 5 languages with different guests throughout our stay. The grounds were beautiful and the food was great. I hope we will be able to return for an anniversary!

5 of 5  Great service and friendly, trusting people, A TripAdvisor Member, Hampshire, September 27, 2007

We have just returned from a ten night trip and had a great holiday. This is largely made up by the staff's attitude, the wonderful weather and the quality of restaurants and bars outside the resort.

We found the general age of guests was quite high with only a few young families - which is probably due to the time of year. Children have a seperate pool area, so it was a very peaceful and relaxing holiday.

The only issue we had was a fairly noisey family with young children next door to us, which was made worse by the interconnecting door. Once we asked reception if we could move, another room was found and we were moved within a couple of hours. The porter moved the majority of our belongings so that we did not need to repack.

The hotel grounds are made up of two main areas with a large immaculately presented pool area with plenty of bed chairs - though to pick an all day sunny would it's best to reserve before 10am! A further lawned area led to a man made beach with views over a rocky, pretty cove with a quiet water sports hut. You could walk in either direction from here in the evenings to find further restaurants and bars outside of the hotel.

As mentioned, it is a man made beach, we are usually beach lovers and took a couple of hours to drive to Ayia Napa to find one. However they were very busy with loud parents, screaming children and cigarrette ends everywhere. Which was a shame as the beaches were pretty. However the pool and lawned area makes up for the lack of beaches as do the freindly staff walking around all day serving you drinks. (At a price!)

The food in the hotel was great. Breakfast is a buffet with outside terracing overlooking the sea and pool area. Lunch is very good and there is a varied choice of restaurants in the evening. We only ate supper at the hotel a couple of times, exploring the massive variety of restaurants outside. There are two excellent restaurants just 50 meters after turning right out of the hotel, The Gabor, a French restaurant and Cavallier, an Italian restaurant both are priced fairly compariably to the UK and if you choose local wines in the restaurants (which are under £10) you can keep the bill under £50 - for two eating a three course meal with plenty of wine and beer!

Perfect if you need a quiet, lazy holiday with excellent service and quality food. If you want something more lively there are bars and clubs just a 20 minute walk away or a £4 taxi journey.

5 of 5  Great hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, UK, September 21, 2007

This is a great family-friendly hotel. Staff are excellent. The rooms have been recently refurbished and are in great condition. The babysitting service was fantastic. No need to rush for a place by the pool as the pools are huge. A great 5 star experience.

Highly recommended.

We have just returned from 1 week half board( free upgrade to full board ) and enjoyed a luxurious and pampered week at Amathus Beach Hotel.

Food was superb, facilities excellent, and service 5 star.

We recommend this venue and advise you to enjoy fully by taking advantage of their wish to serve

4 of 5  Lovely hotel but very pricey!, A TripAdvisor Member, Surbiton, June 21, 2009

I have just returned from the Amathus. My husband and I have stayed in Pathos over the past 8 years and this was our first time in the Amathus. We usually stay in Alexander the great.

The hotel is lovely and the food and restaurants is 5 star definitely. The only problem is the price of everything. They want to charge for anything and everything. I guess it is down to the exchange rate pound against the euro. The rooms really need upgrading.

I will have to consider next time which hotel to stay in. The great thing with Alexander is you chose which sun beds you want at the beginning of the holiday and they are yours for the duration and this does take the whole pain of getting a sun bed, particularly as they appear to allow non residents to use the sun beds.

We got free half board with our package but residents didn't, if you have not got this confirmed, push your travel agent to upgrade you. It is worth it, to eat there is 39 euro per person. There were varying stories of people being phoned before and offered and some people who booked early not receiving half board.

I have never known it so quiet in Pathos, lots of bars and hotels are empty and the locals say it is since they changed to the euro, which is a great shame as the people are lovely.

4 of 5  Lovely hotel with great facilities and fantastic food, A TripAdvisor Member, Surrey, June 17, 2009

My husband and I stayed at the Paphos Amathus with our new born baby. The hotel is lovely, excellent and friendly service from all the staff, a warm attractive pool and variety of bars and restaurants. We stayed half board and found the food outstanding with so much selection of well cooked and pepared food. The hotel can be quite busy at times, particularly with Greek and foreign weddings and also families so it would not be ideal if you wanted a quiet romantic getaway. My only criticism would be that the rooms are a little dated although very spacious. The beds are very comfortable although the cot provided by the hotel for our baby was very old and if we were to return we would take our own travel cot. Apart from this, it was a lovely hotel and we would definately stay again.

4 of 5  Amathus Beach Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Hertfordshire, June 11, 2009

We visited Paphos on the 16th May 2009. Booked via Tui / Thomson and would not do it again. They obviously have problems with Amathus Beach Hotel as we were told by thomson that we had a free upgrade to Half board but when we got to the hotel we were told it was Bed and Breakfast. This happened to other Thomson clients we found out in the morning. The room Thomson had reserved for us was limited side sea view but not on the side but tucked around the corner near the front under the noisy service entrance and side road with a very distance side sea view between the back of four other rooms facing the road and some unsightly unfinished shops. The hotel was full due to the holiday makers who had cancelled their holidays in Mexico due to the swine flu so there was not the usual upgrade as in the other three visits to the hotel and the people visiting for marrying. Relatives who were staying elsewhere were also using the pool and bars. We had a disco blaring out under our room.

The food was great even compared to Tenerife Riu Palace and the staff are great apart from the front desk. Book your holiday with it written on your booking that you do not want rooms 3350 to 3364 for a resticted side sea view. The swimming pool is still the best in Paphos and they have nearly finished the two km promanade from just past the Amathus all the way into the harbour. We had great weather 23 to 28 deg.C and missed the two times it rained, once in the morning at 6am and once in the evening when were eating at 8pm and were told it had only just started to pick up with tourists the week before we arrived. The other bad thing is that the Paphos police are not clearing away the time share sales people approaching everyone in the harbour. The trick is pretend you do not understand them but at least ten of them will approach you in the harbour which is looking better with new cafes. Prices have gone up by some 25%. The locals will tell you this. Shoes that were 15 euros are now 23 euros which is even more of a rise. We enjoyed that super swimming pool but will travel with another travel company in two years time.

4 of 5  Excellent Hotel but..., A TripAdvisor Member, limburg, June 8, 2009

The Cyprian personel is not so good and sometimes arrogant, also the cleaning of the room as not not 5 stars, the food is average while the reception and the pool excellent are..

4 of 5  Good hotel but maybe you should never go back ??, A TripAdvisor Member, April 23, 2009

Four years ago I posted a review for this hotel entitled ' best med hotel

I have ever stayed in' , however since then the world has moved on , Hotels of this type and price (this is not a cheap hotel) are now competing with luxury hotels in Dubai and even the the Canarys , The hotel is still very good but standards are slipping, service was not as quite as good round the pool , standard rooms are ok but bathrooms are very dated and gloomy , shower is very average . The pool area is still very nice, spa looks good and the restaurants still look classy but the rooms need a total makeover . It did not help that the aircon failed for 2 days or that there was building work taking place in the beach area , that said its still a very nice hotel , maybe you should never go back ???

4 of 5  Great hotel for relaxation, fair place for a conference, A TripAdvisor Member, Aachen, February 3, 2009

In January 2009 I had the chance to spent five days in this hotel while attending a scientific conference, for which the Amathus Hotel was the host location. The hotel is situated right at the beach (there is a great sidewalk for the morning run and the afternoon walk) and in walking distance from Paphos port, which is a nice mediterranean port where you can get good seafood. The hotel provides a lot of relaxation offerings at a price point that you can expect in this class. Around the hotel one can easily find nice restaurants and plenty of shopping opportunities.

In order to host a conference with 100+ people there are better places available. The main conference room had no tables and only few power outlets, which does not meet today's standards.

4 of 5  Nice Luxury escape, A TripAdvisor Member, Nicosia, January 28, 2009

I booked the hotel through Thomson as it was the cheapest internet rates I could get.

Amathus was the only luxury hotel in Paphos that I did not stay therefore I found an opportunity and I did.

Very clean and luxurious reception area with nice restaurants and cafes. We were greated and given the room keys and a juice refreshment.

Room was very spacious and fully stocked with mini-bar queen bed, lcd tv with sat and movies on demand, internet, games, big balcony, safe etc. No wifi in room and overprised per hour internet use. 24 hr use more decent priced.

Best mini-bar rates i've seen in a 5star hotel. We ordered room service that was also value priced if you consider 5star service and quality.

Bathroom was cleaned with some amenities etc.

We used the spa facilities of the hotel that was basic and prices the same.

Breakfast was enourmous with sparkling wine and stations for nearly everything.

The beach is not good at the area but the swimming pool in summer is okay. Heated indoor swimming pool was good but full of people.

Junior club was closed, I did not see the hairdressing open, but it was the month like that... so I wouldnt expect much more anyways.

Had a good time though

4 of 5  Very nice - but expensive!, A TripAdvisor Member, Tallinn, January 3, 2009

We booked this hotel for our wedding/honeymoon. It was only the two of us and it was also over Xmas, so would be a nice time of year to get away. I booked it directly and got a good deal, plus loads of wedding freebies thrown in, that some "wedding planners" tried to charge us for. Great communication throughout.

Hotel was very luxurious with a fabulous lobby and pool area that I am sure is very busy in the summer. Its also right on the beach. Its a 15min walk into the cente of Paphos, but there are bars and shops on the doorstep.

Room was upgraded to seaview, and was ok. Wouldnt exactly say it was 5 star. That said, it was clean and was cleaned twice a day.

Wedding was good and well organised. Spa facilities nice and cake, pink champagne and petit fours waiting in our room when we went back. Also had a nice meal for free.

The hotel restaurants seem ok, but are very expensive. We had to attend the gala dinner on Christmas Eve and this came to 110 Euro per person without any wine. They also charged me 16 euro for my welcome glass of champagne! Its much cheaper to eat in the town - but saying this at the time of the plummiting pound, Cyprus in general is expensive. £5 a pint in one of the awful Irish bars in the town!

I would go back, and I would recommend this hotel. I'd like to see what its like in the summer. The level of service is excellent and we were well looked after.

4 of 5  Great Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Aberdeen, October 16, 2008

Just returned from 2 weeks staying at the Amathus. we were a party of 6 aged between 2-60 years old.

The hotel itself is very impressive, lots of marble in the lobby with water features and multi coloured mood lighting.

The pool area is amazing, wonderfully shaped surrounded by gardens. The poolside staff were very helpful wether you required a drink or your parasol moved nothing was to much trouble.

The rooms were fine, (room service twice a day). Would definatly recommend paying that little bit extra for a sea view as you geat a great view and also an amazing sunset. If you are at the front of the hotel you get a view of the high street.

We stayed B&B but ate in the hotel a couple of times for dinner. Very classy restaraunts, shirt and trousers required. If you choose to eat outside the hotel there is loads of choice right outside the entrance, and a lot cheaper too.

If you are into watersports there is plenty of choice on the beach. The beach itself is very rocky and abit rough round the edges. I love a good beach but only went in twice. I think they are trying to improve it as there was a digger pushing sand about. Have a day out at coral bay up the coast, it has a great sand beach.

All in all a great hotel and a great place for a holiday.

4 of 5  Fantastic hotel but Important read for parents........., A TripAdvisor Member, Essex, August 15, 2008

We went to Cyprus for a family wedding and decided to stay at a really good hotel based on some other reviews on Trip Advisor.

I was worried initially as some of the reviews of the Amathus were scathing but i can honestly say that we were very pleased with our experience. Of course you can always find things that need improving but overall we had a really great time.

We have two young children 3 yrs and 1 year and we were pleased with our inland family room as it was much quieter than the Pool/Sea View Rooms. We did however find meal times a bit of a struggle as the hotel was unsure of their half board policy for children and the room information was contradictory. We got there finally, so just to clarify for anyone else......

* Children under 5 are not allowed in the Asiachi, La Rotisserie or Nubar.

* Children can eat in the Byzanthium Cafe from 6 - 7.30pm (remember to tell the staff it is their half board allowance though!) Parents can eat then too but you only get a 19 Euro allowance each.

* Children can also have room service for thier dinner if earlier than 6pm again remember to tell the staff it is their half board allowance.

* Children can eat indoors in the Luna Rosa from 7.30pm or outdoors at La Terrezza but this only opens at 8pm.

* You can opt to have lunch instead of dinner and eat out too.

We went to the kids club (from age 4 not 3 as in the First Choice brochure!) but there was no way i was going to leave my child there! There was an unsecured back gate which was open whilst we were there and the exit leads straight out the back of the hotel - I shut it myself but there was no lock! The Kids Club supervisor spoke broken English and was very pleasant but obviously lacked enthusiasm to get the children motivated and involved in the activates. I also counted 9 children at one stage with just one supervisor, this might be ok for some but not for me I’m afraid. I reported it to Kate the Rep but she wasn't interested.

Most of the staff were wonderful, especially with the children but some were standoff-ish and rude - hit and miss really. The location is great - not too far from the harbour and the hotel grounds are very nice, especially the poolside. Get up early though as the sun beds go fast - before 8am!

Food superb! (not so good in the Byzanthium between 6 - 7.30pm though). Drinks are very expensive but you expect that and you do have to pay for the Champagne Aperitif offered in the Luna Rosa at £35 for 3 glasses!

Don't be put off by some bad reviews, this was definitely one of the best hotels in Paphos from what we saw on our travels.

3 of 5  Nice hotel but needs a serious make over, A TripAdvisor Member, Prenton, June 23, 2009

We have just returned from a 10 day holiday at the Amathus Beach Hotel in which we also got married although i can not say too many bad things about the hotel other than it is mega expensive and the rooms were old and in need of a make over. i can say a few bad things about the company (Thompson) who we booked our wedding package with. First of all do not be fooled about what Thompsons are offering you, they gave us two options in doors or on the terrace, why would anyone want to travel to Cyprus to get married in doors is beond me, so we opted for the terrace. God where we in for a shock the terrace if thats what they want to call it was a small corner at the side of the hotel next to the tennis courts, its some where you would expect to find people having a quick ciggy break also there is no sun as it it constantly shaded by the hotel. After my wife to be stopped crying we had to fork out an extra 200 euros to have it near the gardens, to have it on the gardens was an extra 350 euros. Oh plus you have to pay an extra 6 euros pair chair cover so if you have a large party i would start saving. We were also told that only two weddings take place a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon again a lie there could actually be one every hour in fact we had one take place 90mins before ours which kind of takes the icing of your special day. Breakfast in bed the day after was a joke they try and charge you extra for the same breakfast you can go down to the restaraunt and have for free. So we decided to just have tea, toast and strawberrys we got the toast and tea which was stale and cold and no strawberrys. After the ceremony they supply you with sparkling wine to toast with the guests, i was disapointed to hear that the brides father did not get a drink as there was not enough to go around but the Thompsons wedding rep was spotted in photos with a nice large glass. Why was she was even in the photos. Other than that the wedding went well. The Hotel is located in a good place with just a 20min walk to the harbour. Everywhere is exspensive now but if you look around you can get some ok prices. We did enjoy our time in Paphos but it has changed drastically since i was last there 6 years ago. A good few points about the hotel are.... The hotel did not seem to mind when friends and family visited for the day which was a bonus. The rooms were constantly cleaned and the staff were very friendly.

3 of 5  Tale of two attitudes, A TripAdvisor Member, Alcester, May 6, 2008

The hotel is set in beautiful and very well-tended grounds on the beach. Our room was spacious with glorious views over the pool and the sea. The staff were friendly, caring and helpful with altogether the right attitude to make for a pleasant stay. The management, however, showed a different and rather prescriptive attitude ranging from instructions not to put anything in the minibar which had not been purchased in the hotel (would that include milk we bought outside for morning tea?) and not to consume anything in the room which had been bought outside the hotel "in accordance with international hotel regulations". What regulations were these, we wondered. There were too many small mistakes made in the way the room was serviced - non replacement of used items, for example - the fact that the mini-bar was only serviced six days out of 14 and on two of those days it was restocked with the wrong items.( One result of this is that you have to order the replacement items from room service and pay an extra room service charge). Drinks were served in the wrong glasses. In one section of the breakfast room diners helped themselves to juices etc from dipensers. Try that in another section of the same room and take orange juice from a jug and you risk a sharp reprimand "I'll take that to your table if you don't mind, sir". Some inconsistency here.

We booked half board which was a mistake as there are many restaurants nearby. The hotel has two expensive restaurants - the AsiaChi and La Rotisserie where the food and service were excellent and you get a discount for being on half-board. But the other two restaurants, the Luna Rosa and the Byzantiumn coffee shop which are included in the half-board terms, usually have the same menus which feature buffets which seem to differ from night to night in name only. There are few dishes which distinguish the flambe buffet from the Mediterranean buffet, or the BBQ buffet, or the carvery buffet. And once the food has been put in chafing dishes it is left to dry out and go hard. We never saw any dishes being refreshed. There is a set menu as an alternative which is passable. Breakfasts, however, are spectacular. A huge choice, dishes constantly being refreshed, eggs and omelettes cooked to order , vast quantities of fesh fruit, pastries, juices - even sparkling wine.

The pool is excellent, the weather was terrific, the staff helpful - but it doesn't add up to "Leading hotels of the world" status from our point of view.

3 of 5  Honeymoon at the Amathus, A TripAdvisor Member, Belfast, October 22, 2007

The hotel was lovely - although - leading hotel of the world status - I may reserve judgement on until I have stayed in a few more! We are away to another in Jan - so I'll update on how that compares!

Pros

The hotel basically has a private beach and it's own mini harbour - which an independent company - Nick's - runs watersports from. ( if you are feeling bored - pull up a lounger and check out the soap opera - that is Nick's Watersports on a daily basis - very good light entertainment!)

The breakfast is amazing!! Everything you could imagine!

Very Clean hotel - with lovely seating area outside for lounging after a hard day watching the crazy antics at Nick's!

Offered a free meal at the Ambrosia Restaurant, free pink sparkly wine on arrival, 4 free - sauna, hamman or jacuzzi vouchers and a free champagne breakfast - as well as complimentary upgrade as we were on honeymoon.

Cons

Well I suppose you guess when you book - but it all v.v. expensive here - a regular coffee is about £3.50 - never mind anything else!

The Spa - is in major need of updating - we had free vouchers to use with our honeymoon package and used just one - as a bit of a Spa addict I was not impressed!

The new Asian Fusion restaurant looks lovely - but the staff are so snotty we did not go for dinner - even though my husband is addicted to sushi!

WATCH OUT - they overcharged us on our debit card for our lunch on the last day - by £25 - and I had signed for it before I realised that it had happened!

When we were checking out we heard another couple complain of the same thing!!??

There is a major holiday resort on the exterior of the hotel walls - everthing you would expect from timeshare sales people, inflatable sunbeds, pubs showing the footie, tacky, tacky tatt for sale and those annoying reps - flying up on their scooters to try and get you to go to their club/buy a lottery ticket/share a shot etc!

So - hotel OK - def not leading hotel of the world status! Surrounding area - oh lord crazy zone! With little to no local culture to be recognised! The UNESCO sites are great mind-you and worth a visit - esp. the mosaics - just walk to the harbour - they are right at the start of that area.

If you are going to this area and want a quiet, romantic break - stay at the Columbia Beach Resort in Pissouri.

Enjoy - whatever you get up to!

Mrs Butter Buns!!

3 of 5  In need of room insulation, A TripAdvisor Member, uk, October 2, 2007

I agree with many of the other comments. all in all this hotel does not merit to be included in the leading hotels of the world. it is overpriced and in dire need of better insulation. Anyone coming here please bring ear plugs or expect to get little or no sleep.

3 of 5  Nice hotel but not 5*, A TripAdvisor Member, Derby, UK, September 21, 2007

I'm nearly seven months pregnant and wanted a last luxury holiday before the baby's born. We stayed for 6 wonderful nights at the Four Seasons in Limassol before heading to Paphos to stay at the Amathus Beach Hotel. We booked directly with the hotel and paid approx. £200 (UK) per night bed and breakfast.

First impressesions were good. We were offered a complimentary drink in the Fortuna Bar whilst we waited for our room to be cleaned (we arrived slightly before the 2pm check in time). Afterwards we had a nosey around the communal areas, which are lovely and I'd definately class as 5*. The pool area and comfy setats just outside the Fortuna Bar are particularly impressive. I loved walking around the pool area at night, it was very romantic.

If you like cats, there are some really cute ones which live in the hotel grounds. Three of the cutest kittens you'll ever see have taken residence on the comfy chairs outside Fortuna Bar and are star attractions at the hotel at the moment! The hotel feeds the cats so they don't beg for food all the time, which is good to see.

Other positives...

- The Elton John impersonator in the trendy Nu Bar (Tuesday nights at 9pm, I think) is brilliant. Get there early else you won't get a seat. We had to listen to him from outside the bar.

- The hotel's in a good location - there are lots of good pubs and restaurants just outside around the 'triangle' - our favourite meal was at Cavallini (very friendly service but book a table in advance as it's VERY popular) but we also enjoyed Les Amis (approx. 5 - 10 minutes walk away) and Ficardos. Paphos town centre is walkable, although we didn't attempt it, or you can catch one of the buses which run frequently from outside the hotel.

- It's worth attending the management cocktail party; you get free drinks and canapes.

However...

When you scratch beneath the surface, the 5* rating falls to 4* and sometimes even 3*. Mostly this was due to lack of attention to detail, which I think is vital in a so-called 5* hotel that costs £200 a night for a standard room. Here are some examples:

- The bedrooms are okay but nothing special and certainly not 5*. We booked a pool/sea view, which is worth paying extra for. However, the furniture in the room looks cheap and the bathroom is small and dark. After having a huge jacuzzi in our standard room at the Four Seasons, I was very disappointed with the tiny little bath in this hotel.

- The staff are okay but again, nothing special. The first night we stayed at the hotel we didn't get the turn down service at all. On the second night they knocked whilst we were getting ready to go out and we asked if they could come back in 5 - 10 minutes, which the lady obviously didn't want to do judging by the look on her face.

- There aren't enough staff on at breakfast. We'd nearly finished our breakfast before we were served tea/coffee on the first morning. Other people were being shown to tables that hadn't even been made up.

- If you want a sunlounger next to the pool, you need to be down there by 9.30am or you won't get one. They have a big problem with people getting up early and reserving loungers on mass and not using them until many hours later, and sometimes not until the afternoon. I really think that the management should be doing something to stop this happening.

- We saw six weddings (all British) in the three days that we were there. In my opinion the hotel staff spend too much time dealing with weddings to the detriment of non-wedding guests.

To sum up, don't get me wrong, this hotel is nice but I'd question its 5* rating. If you want real luxury and want to stop in a geniune 5* hotel in Cyprus, go to the Four Seasons hotel in Limassol - it's pure class and walks all over the Paphos Amathus Beach. It's also cheaper to stay there...

i have stayed in better 4 star hotels the grounds around the pool are the only good thing the senior members of staff do nothing but run around for the old skool who have been going to this hotel for years the rooms are in need of upgrading stayed half board only ate in 3 times due to the looking through the nose attitude of the staff if might have 5 stars but the staff need to look at themselfs everyone pays to stay there so there money is as good as the rest its not all about old ted bob etc and the bumuda shorts gang who do nothing but moan about anyone who dare try and enjoy themselfs try the st george instead

We are one of the many 'Sovereign' brochure junkies! Having 2 children what is important to us is 'if they are happy so are we!'

Therefore when the Amathus was highly recommended to us by Soverign as a child friendly hotel we had no hesitation.

We have 2 moans which we feel should be taken into account by anyone considering this hotel with children.

1. Child faciities

Kids Club located in a small bedroom with few activities on offer. Our children are 8 and 9 so therefore didnt stay long in the 'creche!!!!!'

In the evening thankfully there are plenty of cats to keep them occupied,(as no other entertainment is provided) good job they dont have an allergy! In a nutshell this is not a child friendly hotel. Unless you are taking them to be your bridesmaid, I suggest you look elsewhere.

2. Rooms

We paid extra for a side sea view. DONT do it. Basil Fawlty eat you heart out for this was not a sitcom but real life. Yes indeed the see was visible between the land and the sky!!!!!!!!

However it was the 'Macain' food deliveries which started at around 6 am, the recycling of glass at 7 and arrival of staff on motorcycles (I could go on ) which interrupted our view. Basically we overlooked a back road filled with the hotel bins and the generator which did give some relaxing background tunes!!!! These were especially welcome once the adjacent hotels nightly karaoke session (aound 12-1 am) terminated. £17 per person per night for that extra luxury (yes we pay adult prices for the children to have an adjoining room).

Also on the rooms take all your own cosmewtics have stayed in the 'Hilton' chain hotels for an overnight with more tempting shampoos and bubble bath!!!!! Speaks volumes!

Oh and for you tea lovers room service only at a premium for a morning cup of char!

All in all spending 10k on this hotel holiday was definately NOT worth it.

PS If you want a sunbed then set the alarm for 4 am. 6 am is too late!!!

There was an incident when some bored teenagers found it amusing to throw towels from beds into the pool at 3 am. When residents arrived later expecting their reserved beds to be free they found them occupied, not knowing what had taken place, pistols were drawn and that was a trip to casualty for 2 unhappy holidaymakers!

Check out the Punta Prima in Menorca if you have children. We always say never again due to the apparent lack of 5 star (advertised as such) but its so good for children up to the ages of 18. Food crap, rooms in need of overhall but we have been back 4 times and it s luring us again!!!! As we have pretty much exhausted the brochure!!!!

2 of 5  what a disappointment, A TripAdvisor Member, cheltenham, September 18, 2007

I read the reviews but not well enough. The Elysium was full and I cancelled the Almaya for this. What a mistake. the staff in reception were awful and our room at £164 a night was shabby and looked out onto a car park, the sea view was almost there! The towels discoloured and frayed, the toiletries were cheap and I would not wear the bath robes!! The Hotel had one wedding after wedding and the holiday makers suffered.

The gym was good and the pool was ok, plenty of beds but very close together. You had to wait for a table at breakfast and often you could not get outside, food was just ok.

This is not a 5 star, maybe a four but the Elysium is a true 5 star, they could take some lessons!!

I will not be going there again.

2 of 5  Very Disappointed......Not a Leading Hotel!!!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Lancashire, September 18, 2007

For our honeymoon my husband and i decided to try somewhere we hadn't been before, so Cyprus it was, and what better way to spend your honeymoon that in a leading hotel......

.....It all started well, the hotel looked lovely and the bar was very modern and chic, the rooms were nice, although, we booked a Junior Suite with a Plunge Pool and it was only slightly larger than the normal rooms.

The longer our vacation went on the more disappointed we became with the hotel. The evening entertainment in the bar was poor quality...singers who didn't know the words to the songs they were singing and sounding more like those on a Karaoke machine than in a top hotel.

We thought one night we would try the Asian Restaurant in the hotel, which is meant to be the best there.......my husband ordered Chicken Skewers and i had Chicken in Blackbean Sauce, with Noodles to share, there is a reason i'm telling you this....my husband ate a piece of his chicken and said it tasted wierd, he cut open another piece of chicken to see that it was raw in the middle, there is no excuse for this and as we were so disgusted we asked for the bill, me not wanting to eat any of mine (if they can't cook his properly then they may not have cooked mine properly either and i wasn't willing to find out!!!). After five minutes the bill had not arrived so we left the restaurant. The Food & Beverage Manager tracked us down in the bar to discuss our meal, after offering us a meal in the restaurant the next night (which we refused) he offered us a meal at the Poolside Grill the night after (which i must say was fantastic).

After a few drinks we decided to go back to our room, where i found a mouse running over my clothes, after jumping on the bed whilst reporting this to reception we moved rooms. The day after we were told they were sending pest control in, but understandably i did not particularly want to sleep in that room again, so asked to move, they upgraded us to another room, which was more like the room i thought we had booked anyway, a proper suite.

For the next few days all went well and after thinking we would never return to the hotel, we had been talked round and would have considered coming back.

The final nail in the coffin was when we checked out and had our bill, we were slightly confused because we had been charged for the meal in the Asian restaurant, when we queried this we were firmly told that only the raw chicken had been taken off the bill but we had been charged for everything else......due to the fact that i didn't have one mouthful of my meal, being completely put off by the chef's obvious incompetance we were completely gobsmacked. We did say that we thought it was unreasonable, but we were knocked down by the receptionist saying we had been upgraded, the upgrade was down to a mouse being in our room...it may be that this mouse came in whilst we were there but given that i am completely paranoid about things flying in to the room i always shut the patio doors behind me, also my husband thought he saw something a few days before but thought he must have been seeing things i feel that it had been there for the duration of our stay!!!

All in all we were both very disappointed and complained to our rep about the whole saga. It certainly wasn't the end of the world but it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth....we will only ever have one honeymoon and we thought it would be perfect, company was, hotel wasn't!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 of 5  Overrated and overpriced!, A TripAdvisor Member, London, June 22, 2009

We were all really looking forward to this break to Cyprus for months. We booked directly unlike everyone else who was on a package/ tour operator deal. It was supposed to be a leading hotel but don't let the website fool you (it's pure PR) the hotel is tired and old like the staff which is only surpassed by their arrogance when speaking with you.

Clientale is mainly british,German and Russians and ranges from older retired people(60+) to weddings everyday by the pool and what can only be described as the chav wanabee, gangster types who used to go to Spanish costas!. (I could have spent my holiday in Basildon instead and saved a fortune) dresscodes in most outlets (which in a resort is unheard of) and children most certainly are expected to be hidden and neither seen nor heard. Charging 5/6 star prices with 2 star service!

This is one to be avoided at all costs!!

Paphos is disappointing also, no charm or character left at all- full of bars, clubs, english breakfast cafes and pubs! like any other mediterranean resort.

Any feedback was given lip service, staff are ill-informed of local area and disinterested unless something in it for them.

Needs a major overhaul of the rooms.

If you use the Spa, use of jacuzzi, sauna etc incurs a 15 euro charge for hotel guests- unbelieveable!

I cannot tell you how disgusted and upset we all were- start to finish it was a nightmare.

Never will return to Cyprus purely because of this experience.

1 of 5  3 Star Hotel with 5 Star Badge, A TripAdvisor Member, London, September 3, 2008

I am writing this hoping to shed some light about this hotel to help travelers just to beware what to expect: First the people at the reception are inefficient and unhelpful as they do nothing with a customer's complaint (take it or leave it attitude!). Second, the lobby is definitely Not 5 star standard (more like a three star hotel). Third: The rooms are cheaply furnished and run down even if they claim that they are refurbished. Fourth: The usable part of the pool is roughly 1/3 of its size namely the shallow part where people can actually stand; the other 2/3 is deep water, so most of the crowd is gathered in the shallow part, while the deep area has maybe 1 or 2 people swimming. Fourth: Fungus is growing on the sides of the pool from inside (imagine seeing this myself, and I didn't want my family to see it because I did not want to spoil their vacation) anyway that didn't work as the rest of the time we went to beaches nearby. Fifth: The beach is a rocky beach with hardly anyone swimming! Sixth: As we wanted to move out of the hotel, we informed our travel agent, but he said to check with the hotel, so I did, and they penalized me with a 3 night charge for 2 rooms which comes out to about EURO 1800.

Last year we stayed at the Elysium, as it was fully booked this year, so we had no choice but to stay at the Amathus!

I will never recommend this hotel even to my enemies!
