5 of 5  What a gem!, A TripAdvisor Member, Riga, May 16, 2008

Stayed in this hotel over Christmas 2007. Enjoyed ourselves a lot!

Location of the hotel is superb - it's right on the Kurfurstndamm (not sure aobut the spelling), but anyway, this is one of the main streets in the centre of the city.

The hotel is a floor in a residential building. I loved the level of detailing in the hotel's attitute to clients. One evening we have found Christmas sweets and decorations in our room - what a lovely touch and how nice it is to feel that someone cares aobut you!

Rooms are old-fashioned, but certainly have charm (as well as comfort). Breakfast is superb - very good quality products and a beautiful dining room - it felt like we are having breakfast in some aristocratic villa/castle together with the royal family. :)

Would definately recommend this hotel to everyone and would most certainly stay here again and again! Special thanks to the owners/managers of the hotel for their care and attention - we felt very welcome and are very grateful for the amazing time in the hotel!

5 of 5  beautiful, characterful hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, London, October 21, 2008

To echo most of the reviews, this was one of the most beautiful, characterful hotels my wife and I (and her parents) have ever stayed in. Our sumptuous room had a chandelier hanging from the pressed ceiling, walls of soft blue and white, and a separate antechamber with a weeping fig plant and two chairs and a table at a large window, with the busy Berlin thoroughfare, almost unhearable, below. The bathroom, with classic, circular, chrome water meters, was sparkling clean. The hotel staff was as friendly as one could ever hope to encounter. The nearby square, Savigny Platz, teems with restaurants: Mr Hai and friends, a Vietnamese place, was great; as was Zwiegelfisch, a memorably atmospheric bar from the Sixties, with good, honest food. We would recommend against the extremely popular tapas place, Mar y Sol. The waitress, who was perhaps the manager, was brusque to the point of barely looking at us while we ordered. She gave us wrong dishes, forgot dishes, and allowed us only one glass of tap water each, snatching away the jug of water we had asked for.

5 of 5  A real find, but keep it quiet.....!, A TripAdvisor Member, Brisbane, Australia, July 21, 2008

We stayed at the Askanischer Hof for 3 days in mid July 2008.

I researched this hotel through TripAdvisor.com and most of the reviews are reflective of what you will find at this great little hotel.

The location is excellent - right on the Kufurstendam in the Charlottenburg district in a very up-market area with plenty of shops, food and transport to access any area in Berlin relatively easily. The hotel is on the first floor of the building and you just buzz reception from the main entrance 24 hours a day and they will let you in.

Remember, this is not your typical "brand name" hotel. You won't find 24 hour room service, pool and valet service but you will find it personalised, small and oozing character.

The room we had was just lovely - extremely clean and just a bit different. The furnishings were lovely. The room faced away from the main street. It was also of a good size.

There was some construction works being undertaken on the facade of the building as well as the exterior of the rear of the building which meant no sleeping in - they started noisily at 7.00am. This did not bother us as we wanted to make the most of each day but we were not advised of any construction works at the time of booking.

There was no air-conditioning but the room was relatively cool with the windows open (the weather during our stay was a mixed bag of fine, sometimes warm but also sometimes cool with light rain at times, temps around the low 20's)

The entire staff were excellent and assisted in anyway possible to make your stay a great one. They all spoke very good English. We even asked them to book a restaurant for us that we wanted to go to and they willingly obliged. When we said "Do you want our name", the reply was " I know your name!" - how often do you get that!

The breakfast was excellent with a wide selection of fruits, yoghurts, pastries and meats and cheeses as well as hard boiled and scrambled eggs. The breakfast room is just delightful - reminiscent of a bygone era!

There was free WiFi connection which was fast and reliable.

We will definately return to Berlin - a great city with so much to do. Three days was just not enough and we could have easily spent five to explore areas in a lot more detail. And we will definately return to this great little hotel but keep it quiet - it is a real find...!

5 of 5  Excellent Central Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Horsham, April 17, 2008

Just returned from a week stay at the Askanischer Hof. It lives up to it's reputation as a classy hotel, in a classy area of Berlin. Outlook from my bedroom was Chanel & Cartier. Dining room very comfortable and spacious with a good selection of breakfast options. Hotel staff friendly and helpful.

An hotel with real character and style. Thoroughly recommend a stay there.

5 of 5  Tripadvisor advises well!, A TripAdvisor Member, Isle of Man, April 4, 2008

We used Tripadvisor to help select this hotel for a short stay last month, and it was the right thing to do (again). Our room was a superior one overlooking the street. Noise was not a problem, but if it had been then we would have just shut the door to the little study (which was on the street side of the bedroom). The room was tall and elegant, immaculately clean, and bright with pleasant "classic" furnishings. Superb bathroom.

Staff were attentive, English-speaking, and nothing seemed to be the slightest problem to them. Lovely breakfasts too in an interesting room with photos of what appears to be old cabaret stars adorning the walls.

It's worth noting that you can take one of the frequent S-Bahn trains direct from the main airport (Schonefeld) to Savignyplatz, which is about 500m of easy walking from the hotel (or a quick taxi ride).

Also, the hotel is accessed via a shared door (the reception is staffed at all times so there's no problem), then a lift (or stairs) takes you up to the hotel itself.

The shops in the vicinity are mostly top designer shops, which gives an indication of the type of area! Head back to Savignyplatz for a selection of great restaurants.

5 of 5  Kurfurstendam gem, A TripAdvisor Member, Edinburgh, February 22, 2008

We stayed 3 nights at the Askansicher Hof, on recommendation of other TripAdviser users. Agree with everything I had read. The hotel is right on the middle of the Ku Dam, nearest underground is 1/4 mile walk. There was no traffic noise, and no noise from reception despite our room being beside the reception hall and breakfast room. Beautiful feel to hotel - it dates from early 1900s and is decorated and furnished in this style with antique furnishings, loads of atmosphere. Beds very comfy, and our room was absolutely enormous, very clean and had a view over the KuDam. Breakfast served from early until 11am, and apparently you can even have it later in your room. Breakfast very plentiful all fresh and lovely rolls, fruit, cheese cold meat as well as various cereals, fruit juice coffee etc. There was some limited room service, very reasonable price eg small pot of coffee for €3. 24 hour reception. Nothing too much trouble. The whole hotel just had a lovely welcoming atmosphere. Don't go there if you want some anonymous modern Holiday Inn type experience, but do go there if you want to experience a snapshot of what a hotel would have been like in the roaring 20s (but with modern comforts and a warm welcome). Very good value for 130€ per night inc breakfast.

5 of 5  Something Different, A TripAdvisor Member, Glasgow, February 5, 2008

I booked a 4 night trip to Berlin for my girlfriend's 30th and after getting a good deal on Easyjet flights from Glasgow to Berlin Schoenfeld, I decided to try and splash out for a memorable hotel. Rather than choose the rather expensive city centre chain-hotels option I read the reviews on Trip Advisor for Askanischer Hof and checked out their own website for pictures and further info, to discover that this would be something memorable without paying silly money (about £90/120Euros per night for B&B).

One warning about flying Easyjet is that Schoenfeld is a fair bit out of the city. Although I'm sure there are bus and train options we just wanted to get to our hotel so got a cab, which cost over 40Euros.

Once we got to the hotel it was immediately clear that this was something different. 15 rooms spread over the first floor of what looks from the front like a nice office building.. Once inside you immediately step back 100 years, with traditional decor and loads of memorabilia in the hotel reception. The reception is small but the staff very friendly and willing to assist. Quietly helpful best describes them. Also very safe because there's someone on reception 24hrs and you have to buzz-in every time you enter the building (even when you stoat home at 4am after a cracking night out at Berlin Club Felix!).

Our room was opposite reception next to the breakfast room and everything about it was great other than the bed. A huge room done out in old-fashioned styling (even with a traditional radio that picked up loads of random stations!), but with a really small and a bit uncomfortable double bed. That was my only criticism as a lovely big double bed in the room would have topped off a great hotel room.

Hotel is right in amongst the designer shops area of Ku'Damm where there are clearly many Berlin residents with lots of money. You need to walk to the left as you exit the hotel to reach the more mainstream shops and restaurants. And talking of restaurants the best bit of advice I can give is that there is an Italian restaurant just along the road towards the main shopping area, called Petrocellis. Run by Italians and superb food and wine, with a great atmosphere.

Other than that I'd recommend Berlin as a great city to visit, and most of the tourist sites are well worth a trip - best probably the zoo, brandenburg gate, reichstag & checkpoint charlie museum.

5 of 5  A hidden gem, A TripAdvisor Member, Hampshire, England, January 27, 2008

We could find no fault with this lovely hotel. Perfect location; lovely rooms; very clean; superb breakfast; friendly and helpful staff.

5 of 5  very nice, A TripAdvisor Member, new york, December 30, 2007

very nice hotel. the room they gave me was fantastic, much nicer than I had any reason to expect based on the price. an argument could be made for staying in east berlin where the action is, but there's a s-bahn stop near this hotel that gets you there in ten minutes.

5 of 5  Great value, great location, great staff, A TripAdvisor Member, Boston, Massachusetts, December 2, 2007

Good mix of european and north american guests. Very large, comfortable rooms. Very large breakfast. Even with the ascent of the euro which made this trip a bit more dear traveling on the dollar, the AH was a very well priced and delivered exceptional value.

5 of 5  A Five Star Experience, A TripAdvisor Member, Bangkok, Thailand, November 19, 2007

I had just spent seven days in Berlin in an excellent commercial-type hotel, and I wanted something different for the four nights remaining during my visit; some small place with old-world charm, with the flavor of a pension. I searched the Internet, found the Askanischer Hof, and then walked there from my high-rise hotel, and toured the premises with the very helpful and friendly person at the Askanischer Hof small front desk. I was immediately sold. I particularly liked that my reservation was recorded by hand in an old-fashioned ledger book; no computer programs involved, and no deposit or prepayment required.

The Askanischer Hof is located in a posh neighborhood on the upper Kudam. Yves St. Laurent is next door, and both Cartier and Chanel are directly across the street. The hotel is about halfway in between two bus stops (the airport bus serves both stops and is a 20 minute ride away). The Askanischer Hof is on the second floor of a building that was built in the 1890’s, according to one of the tenants I met in the elevator. Originally, the hotel was one large apartment, and then it was expanded to include a second apartment. Now it comprises about 16 rooms, all different, but with high ceilings and plaster decorations in each. My large bathroom had plumbing fixtures manufactured by Villeroy & Boch. My single room was really three rooms---an entry foyer, the bedroom and the bath. In short, the Askanischer Hof is comfortable and reeks of charm.

The breakfast, which is included in the daily rate, is served in a large room, which must have been the formal room for receiving guests and entertaining. The breakfast was very good, consisting mostly of a buffet of cold breakfast foods, breads, fruit, plentiful coffee and tea, and eggs cooked to order. I appreciated that breakfast was served until 11:00 AM, because I loved sitting in this elegant and spacious atmosphere, reading the newspaper and planning the day’s tours, for almost two hours each morning.

The front desk is staffed 24 hours a day, and guests can come and go at any hour. I was sorry to leave this wonderful hotel, and I’ll most certainly stay there again upon my return to Berlin. I don’t know why it is rated only three stars, because for me it was a five star experience.

5 of 5  Askanischer Hof. What a hotel!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Letterkenny, November 2, 2007

My family and I stayed in the Askanischer Hof for 5 nights. In summary, we found it excellent value, friendly service, well positioned, and had a relaxing environment.

The hotel was centrally located on the Ku'Damn, one of Berlin's main shopping streets. A Louis Vuitton outlet was next store for example, and 100's more either side.

The nearest bus stop was 100m away. M19 and M29 were the most popular routes, running every 5/10 minutes, taking one right along the Ku'Damn. The nearest underground stop was Uhlandstraße the on the U1 line (5/10 mins. away), following by the Adenauerplatz stop on the U7 line (10/15 mins.)

There were four of us in total, including our 11 and 14 year old children. We had a large suite, number 30. This looked down into a quite courtyard. It was beautifully decorated in a classical style. The entire hotel was full of antique furniture and had high ceilings through out. There was a large selection of books too, in English and German.

The staff were most friendly and helpful. For example, one of them actually volunteered to post some postcards, when we asked her where was the nearest postbox. In addition, they all had excellent English.

The breakfast was a large and a typically German affair. It was served between 06.30 and 11.00am, or in one's room afterwards. Everything was fresh, tasty and well presented.

Would definitely stay again!

5 of 5  Wonderful old style hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Dublin, October 18, 2007

Beautiful old style hotel, lovely big rooms with high ceilings and antique furniture, helpful English speaking staff., wonderful breakfast.

I would agree with previous comments - if street noise is likely to disturb you (it didn't bother me) then ask for a courtyard facing room.

5 of 5  Step back in time in a fantastic hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, CountyCork, October 16, 2007

Just returned to Ireland today after a three night stay in Askanischer Hof with my husband. This hotel is amazing and I cannot overstate how highly I recommend it. As previous reviewers have stated this hotel is in the main shopping district, the Ku'dam. It has Channel, Gucci and Yves St. Laurent as neighbours, as well as H&M, Zara and C&A. If one is planning a shopping trip (especially with Christmas looming), choose here.

Every part of the city is accessible from the hotel. Taxis are literally on the doorstep and Zoo Station and Savingnyplatz station are nearby.

The hotel itself is great. The dining room is decorated with dated pictures of starlets (mainly from the stage) who all stayed there. Also David Bowie was once a guest.

The staff of the hotel are extremely pleasant and informative.

The rooms are exceptionally large and very well heated. They are well furnished and impressive to look at. The ceilings are high and as aforementioned the rooms are huge. The shower is great and there is a real hair dryer in the bathroom which was a bonus.

Breakfast was great in this hotel. Loads of bread rolls, cheeses, meats, and a boiled egg. Also beautiful cake was available for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Berlin is an amazing city. We loved it and rate it up there with the very best of them as a great destination.......We are already planning our next trip and yes we would stay in Askanischer Hof again.

5 of 5  Time Capsule, A TripAdvisor Member, Hampton Court, England, October 16, 2007

We stayed at the Askanischer Hof for two nights on our first 'toe in the water' visit to Berlin and were as delighted with the hotel as with the city itself. The location on the Kudam is hard to beat. The hotel is tucked away between designer shops (Chanel etc) just west of the Uhlandstrasse metro station. The hotel building appears undistinguished but as you climb the stairs (or take the lift) and open the ornately carved first floor door to the hotel itself you enter into a haven of quirky charm. 1930s is the stylistic watchword and calm prevails. The public areas are relatively limited: A lobby and reception area well stocked with interesting Berlin literature adjoins a bar/breakfast area the walls of which are covered with interesting photographs of old Berlin and its people. Breakfast is huge (well, as big as you want it to be) and can be taken in the breakfast room up until 1100 or in your bedroom at any time. Fantastic!

The hotel does not serve dinner but has a good relationship with a restaurant/brasserie across the street (Austria Brasserie) that stays open late and offers good - if somewhat pricey - food.

The bedrooms are large and airy and are full of antique furniture and prints. Comfortable beds and a modern ensuite (shower, no bath) plus all you would expect to find in a 3 star hotel bedroom make for a relaxed and easeful stay.

All the hotel staff we met were charming, polite and helpful. I was able to check-in for our return flight online and print boarding cards using the hotel's reservation PC. Nothing seemed too much trouble.

We would certainly revisit this hotel if we were to return to Berlin as I am sure we will.

The room rate we were offered was something like Euro 145 per night, breakfast included. Good value indeed.

5 of 5  fantastic place, A TripAdvisor Member, Bristol England, October 2, 2007

Our 2nd year in Berlin and we stayed at the Askanischer Hof for 4 nights during the Berlin Marathon Weekend. What a place! It had so much character, the staff were brilliant nothing was too much trouble The room we stayed in was spotlessly clean and breakfast was excellent. They served from 6.30am until 11am so plenty of time for a lie in if like us you have had a few too many the night before. Maybe not so suitable for children as it was rather quiet but I'm sure children would be most welcome there. The year before we stayed in a hotel nearby which was double the price but there was no comparison. An absolute must to stay in, cannot fault it in anyway. Excellent and 10 out of 10.

5 of 5  This hotel has everything - even a scale in the bathroom, A TripAdvisor Member, Arizona, September 27, 2007

I loved this hotel for its down home comfy style. Our room was large and spacious. It had a TV, mini bar, desk, armoire, table and chairs...even a hat stand in the bedroom portion. The bathrom had a hair dryer, lighted mirror and the usual amenities of soaps, shampoos, shower caps, shoe shine cloths and body lotion. It even had a box of kleenex in the bathroom. And the scale measuring your weight in kilos. I loved it!

Breakfast was expansive and even cooked eggs were prepared if desired. The breakfast hours were long - I believe from 6:30 to 11:00.

The hotel was close to public transportation and many cafes and restaurants. I would most certainly stay there again and recommend it highly.

5 of 5  More like a 5 star hotel!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Carrickfergus, United Kingdom, September 10, 2007

Overall a very relaxing experience staying in this hotel, the staff are very friendly and make you feel at home. Believe me this feels like a 5 star hotel compared to a 3 star, and has a great 1930's quality about it.

The rooms are also spotless and the location is great. I've stayed in more expensive hotels and the service has been pathetic compared

to the service provided by this great hotel! Highly Recommended!!

5 of 5  Spacious and Spotless, A TripAdvisor Member, manchester, August 19, 2007

I had read the rave reviews from tripadvisor but was still unprepared for the grand dimensions of the room. We stayed in the suite (rms 30/31) and had so much space (very handy when you have two teenagers with you!). The bathroom was enormous and very clean (although smelt a little of stale cigarettes); the pictures don't really do it justice.

This is not a luxury hotel; the decor is quirky and kitsch rather than elegant, however, we enjoyed our stay here more than we have in some of the more upmarket places. The staff were friendly, the breakfast plentiful and tasty and the location was great...what more can you ask for?

There are lots of lovely restaurants and cafes nearby, we weren't disappointed anywhere. They are open until v. late and people seem to eat dinner quite late and take their time. Most people seem to smoke so it's best to get tables outside if possible.

Use the underground, it's cheap and efficient and puts London to shame.

We will definitely go back to Berlin and would be happy to stay here again.

5 of 5  Stay Here in Berlin!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Belfast, July 25, 2007

What a fantastic hotel. The staff are fluent in English and seem to enjoy speaking English to you and are happy for you to try out your German.

I appreciated the reviews I read before going to Berlin so much that I felt had to bring my own opinion to everyone.

We stayed in room 15. When we walked into the room just like from when we walked into the hotel we were stunned. I knew I had arrived in an authentic Germany with authentic style. Right down to the old style radio, the lights and the sofa. It was such an amazing experience.

A lot of reviews mention the breakfast. I looked forward to breakfast

every morning. You have a range of choice such as cereals, (I assume it is custom for German people to have) meats and cheese, basket of bread and the good old egg.

Maybe others didn't realise but you have the choice of freshly boiled, fried or my favourite scrambled egg. I loved how the breakfast waitress knew in the mornings I would like scrambed egg and some lovely coffee.

The breakfast room in itself is an experience, the decor is so original and some of the big chairs...well I felt like a king.

We took the opportunity during our stay to have a few sneaky peeks at

some of the other rooms whilst they were vacant and open for airing.

They were all amazing and no two rooms I seen were the same. So I guess I will have to go back another 15 times to experience staying in them all.

The location of the hotel is great. A stroll up the Kudamn to wonderful cafe's, restaurant's, buses or train give you access to everywhere and everything with ease.

After a few days I thought I could live here.

All of the hotel staff were great, the waitresses, room cleaning staff, reception and night porters are just wonderful people. I can't thank them enough.

What other hotel has fresh coffee and tea made for you when you are checking out at 4am for an early flight and offers to cook breakfast too? Thankyou cheerful night porter :-)

P.S. We realised we forgot to tip guy from reception after he delivered fresh coffee to the room after a long day of sight seeing.

But when we're back we'll fix that!!! :-)

I think I have some photo's which i'll post later.

Who wants to stay in a massive hotel where you are just a number?? Not me!!

5 of 5  wonderful hotel, would definitely stay there again, A TripAdvisor Member, Chelmsford, United Kingdom, April 21, 2007

This hotel is located on the first floor of a building on Ku'Damm.

I was a single room, room 22, which faced the courtyard. The room was quiet and comfortable and quite large for a single room (it is always nice to have an armchair as well as the single bed).

the bathroom was massive with bath.

As metioned in the other reviews the easiest way to reach this hotel is probably the 109 which runs from Tegel airport to the Zoo via Ku'Damm. The 109 also saves the 15 min walk from the Zoo station at the end of a long day of sight seeing.

The staff were very helpful and friendly.

The breakfast was very good a good spread of all the usually continental breakfast fare plus a boiled egg.

5 of 5  Old world style in Berlin, A TripAdvisor Member, USA, January 24, 2007

The Hotel Askanischerhof is located in the former West Berlin on the famous Kurfurstendamm (Ku’ Damm). The small hotel is an oasis amongst an upscale shopping area. As expected, rooms on the street side can be very noisy, although heavy double pane windows face the street and metal blinds may also be lowered if necessary. If you are a light sleeper, however, consider the courtyard-facing rooms as there is almost constant activity (people, cars, buses, street sweepers, drag races, etc.) on the Ku Damm, 24 hours a day. The rooms were furnished with antiques and mine was reasonably large with very high ceilings. Bedding was very clean and comfortable in the German style. Daily breakfast was an absolute highlight of the stay, with great selection and quality served in a large, antique-filled room. The closest transit point to the hotel is a couple of bus stops to include bus # 109, which goes to and from the Tegel airport. Also, the major Zoo Bahnhof station is about 15 minutes on foot from the hotel, and is a major hub for the bus system, U-Bahn, and S-Bahn, and is the best way to access the former East Berlin from the hotel. The Savignyplatz is also nearby, with many good restaurants and another convenient S-Bahn station, slightly closer to the hotel than the Zoo station. This hotel is recommended for business or leisure stay in Berlin.

5 of 5  look no further, A TripAdvisor Member, Eindhoven, January 22, 2007

Wonderfull place to stay. Especially for romnantic weekends. All the other reviews are right; super atmosphere, high ceilings, delicious breakfast and small-scale charm. Very nice, safe part of the town. Good connection to by Metro (5 minutes walk over the Ku-damm).

5 of 5  Trip advisor reviewers find another little gem, A TripAdvisor Member, San Francisco, January 4, 2007

Cannot add much to all the other glowing reviews except to agree. From the moment you ring the front door bell you enter an old world of charm and quiet. We stayed for three nights in a suite. Loved having breakfast served in the room overlooking the little inner courtyard. The staff were helpful friendly and unobtrusive.

There are many nice restaurants close by. If designer shopping is your thing you are surrounded by high end shops. One tip for visiting the Reichstag book tea or lunch to avoid the queue. The staff at the hotel have the number and made the reservation for us.

5 of 5  1st Class, A TripAdvisor Member, Manchester, United Kingdom, December 23, 2006

This is just a great place to stay. Our double room was spacious, spotlessly clean, with lots of hot water and a power shower. We were facing onto Ku'damm (West Berlin's principal shopping street), but the room had a conservatory (!) between the bedroom and the on-street windows and so we were completely oblivious of any road noise. Breakfasts are ample and served in a wonderfully eclectic room in which Sally Bowles might have held court. The staff are unfussy, but very friendly and extremely helpful. The hotel is on the bus route from Tegel airport (nearest stop 200m ), between two U-Bahn stops (for lines U1 and U2), and a short walk through an up-market residential area (with plenty of bars and restaurants) from Savigny-Platz S-Bahn station. So, with Berlin's excellent public transport system (a travel pass is a great buy), anywhere in the city can easily be reached day or night. Highly recommended.

5 of 5  Return visit..., A TripAdvisor Member, Smokey Mountains, Tennessee USA, December 6, 2006

I had previously stayed here and made it a point to make reservations to stay again on my return to Berlin ! Small hotel that is perfect in every way... helpful, courteous staff. Well worth the price. With the location of the "new" Train Station in Berlin, this hotel is a little harder to get to (you formerly could walk from the Zoo Station) but I wouldn't stay anywhere else! After all, if I stayed anywhere else, I would miss the honking wedding cars on the Kurdam and it wouldn't be really Berlin !

5 of 5  Just perfect, A TripAdvisor Member, Belfast, June 8, 2006

As a family group of 5 we stayed in 3 rooms for 5 nights. This hotel is just perfect. Charming staff, great decor - amazing high ceilings - great location. Two of our party were over 90 years old and it was fine for them.

5 of 5  Great Hotel with lots of charm, A TripAdvisor Member, Boston, Massachusetts, April 29, 2006

I LOVED this hotel. I took my daughter to Berlin and to avoid too close quarters reserved the suite (room #30-31). What a treat. The rooms were huge. There is an entry hall off of which was a gigantic modern bath. Separate tub and shower. Even an antique dressing table and bench. Then there was a very large living room with full size sofa, two tub chairs, large desk, coffee table and antique bookcases filled with books. Finally a large bedroom with a very large wardrobe and french doors to open wide and look out on the courtyard. The ceilings were very, very high in the entire suite, probably close to 15 feet. I loved this place and thought the 165 Euro's per night, which included breakfast buffet and even eggs cooked to order, was a very good deal. Location is excellent and the staff helpful, giving us great dinner recommendations. Ask for directions and/or help with reservations to Ottenthal, an Austrian restaurant within walking distance that was excellent or try Enoteca Il. Calice, an italian bistro/wine bar that also had excellent food and great service and is very close to the hotel. I am going to try and post some photos of our room.

5 of 5  Great place to stay in Berlin, A TripAdvisor Member, Florida, March 29, 2006

We now eschew the large hotels in Germany for small intimate well located hotels. The Askanischer Hof is run by a very lovely staff headed by the owner who lives just across the street and is very hands on. The rooms are well appointed, and quite lovely. We stayed in the suite which faces a small courtyard. Some of the rooms face the Ku'damm, and might be a bit more noisy. The breakfast is authentic German, and great. There is a small bar with hand picked wine by the bottle available. The location of the hotel is perfect with easy access to virtually everything. I recommend this hotel without reservation-but please don't spread the word since we want to go back!

5 of 5  Stepping back in time with all the comforts of the 21st century, A TripAdvisor Member, London, England, February 17, 2006

I stayed at the Hotel Askanischer Hof in October 2005 with a group of friends (all women). We chose this hotel after reading Trip Advisor reviews as we were attracted by the unusual description of the decor. We were not disappointed and our stay at this hotel was FIRST CLASS. It is situated about 10 minutes walk from the SBahn Savigny Platz in a rather smart district with small boutiques and restaurants. The hotel itself if on the main Kufurstendamm with all the swanky designer shops such as Gucci and Chanel, but inside it is not over smart or intimidating and has a very pleasant ambiance. It is about a 15 minute walk to the main railway station and the Gedanknis Kirche. There is also a UBahn station about 5 minutes walk away. Despite being on the main road the hotel is very quiet - our room was at the back overlooking a little courtyard garden and we did not hear a thing. As there were four of us we requested a room together and were given the Suite which was amazing - hallway entrance, a large bedroom, huge living room with stately furniture, and a bathroom which could fit a football team! The sleeping arrangements had been changed around for us so we could have four single beds. The room was warm despite the high ceilings and ceiling to floor windows. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English although were happy to listen politely to our stumbling attempts at German! Breakfast is served in a large dining room, where we were seated at a table which resembled something out of a stately home. As remarked by other reviews, everybody spoke in whispers!! Breakfast was excellent and lots of it, with a copious self-service buffet as well as waitress service. The only drawback was a table of heavy smokers next to us. Everybody in Berlin seems to smoke, so this is something you have to accept I suppose. The hotel decor is quirky, lots of stuffed toys, photos and strange knicks knacks, but this adds to its charm. All in all a very good stay and we would recommend Askanischer Hof highly if you want a reasonably priced hotel that is slightly different. Other recommendations whilst in Berlin - go on a Berlin Walks (it has a website) walking tour which was fantastic and excellent value. Also ask the receptionist at the hotel to direct you to the Zwiebel Fisch cafe just off Savigny Platz if you want to eat authentic German fare in an atmospheric environment(it is close to the university). Enjoy it!

5 of 5  Eccentric but fantastic, A TripAdvisor Member, Cardiff, South Wales, September 3, 2005

Spent four nights here with my family. Quirky hotel with an almost Gothic feel to it. Our room or rooms were enormous. The adults were in a suite which had the largest bathroom I've ever seen in a hotel. You could fit at least six people in the shower (if you really wanted to!) and every where was spotlessly clean. The bedroom had a huge bed with brilliant white starched linen and a ceiling to floor windows that overlooked a small courtyard/garden. Its like an oasis of calm in quite a busy shopping street.

Breakfast was a rather strange affair as nobody on the other tables spoke above a whisper but the food was excellent.

I'd definitely stay here again as it was such an off the wall sort of place and the rooms are so comfortable in a "shabby chic" sort of way. The staff are extremely helpful and courteous as well.

5 of 5  Amazing & Charming, A TripAdvisor Member, Belmont, California, August 6, 2005

My family and I occupied 3 rooms over the course of 4 days. We loved this place and I will definately return every time I'm in Berlin. My aunt, who grew up in Berlin, found this gem after personally checking our several other hotels in the vicinity prior to our arrival. Cozy yet elegant. The price is one of the greatest values you will find in Europe! Rooms were charming old world style, clean, beautiful. We had #25, #28, #29. Wonderful personal service by the friendly staff and owner - all of whom spoke english. After the first morning, they knew my passion for enjoying coffee in bed and expected me - ready with a tray in hand. They also knew that I liked mineral water with breakfast, and after the first day, I didn't have to ask - it was brought to me promptly. A luscious European style breakfast buffet (included in room price) in the main sitting room was a great way to start the day. One rainy evening, I sat in the main room and enjoyed a quiet drink from the little bar in the corner and looked at the collection of Helmut Newton books. Great location - Chanel, YSL and lots of the best shopping ever all right there, plus public transportation. Don't miss KaDeWe down the street. The Kudamm and the side streets off it, are loaded with great places to eat too- loved the outdoor garden cafe at the bookshop on Fasanenstrasse, all within a walk or a short bus ride.

This stay was truly more like staying at someone's amazing house-one felt like a cherished guest.

5 of 5  Excellent hotel!, A TripAdvisor Member, March 2, 2005

Just back from a 4 night stay at this hotel. Room was large and quiet, despite being right on the Ku'damm. Very good buffet breakfast. Staff were definitely first rate - polite and welcoming. Quirkily decorated, with antiques and stuffed toys. Old style German hospitality with a very convenient location. Perfect for a relaxing stay.

5 of 5  So at home at the Ashkanischer Hof, A TripAdvisor Member, Santa Cruz, CA, March 28, 2004

The Ashkanischer Hof is a little German gem of a Hotel (16-18 rooms) that has a rich history. If you enjoy feeling like you've stepped back in time this is the hotel for you. Each room is unique and decorated impecably. Our room, Room 15, at 92 Euro a night, was an absolute steal! We had a view of the Ku'Dam from our bay windows, a huge bedroom with adjoining lounge and desk areas, our own foyer and bathroom, and a shared community lobby with room 16 (separate from the main lobby)decorated in circa 1940 style. The breakfast room (breakfast is included in room price) is quiet and relaxing and the buffet is fresh, tasty and oh so German. A word to the wise--the hotel doesn't have much of a room service (you can only order cold-cuts) but there's a great number of restaurants along K'Dam within easy walking distance so you don't really mind. The staff is very professional, give you plenty of privacy, are very friendly and helpful but don't speak much English, so it's a plus to have some high school German under your belt (or a good phrase book). This was one of the most pleasurable hotel stays anywhere ever.

5 of 5  1920, A TripAdvisor Member, New York, NY, September 17, 2003

the Askanischer Hof is an absolutely wonderful hotel. a group of us rented out five of the sixteen rooms over four days, and felt almost as if we had rented our own little private mansion. it is as elegant as it is eccentric, and retains a marvelous 1920's Berlin aesthetic. as well, the staff are as friendly as any i've ever encountered. that it draws a more interesting brand of celebrity, such as David Bowie, Helmut Newton and Tilda Swinton, is hardly a surprise. i myself write about travel and stay in some of the most interesting hotels throughout the world--the Askanischer Hof is now near the top of my list. brilliant!

5 of 5  Hotel Askanischer Hof, A TripAdvisor Member, Richmond, VA, June 18, 2003

I stayed at the Hotel Askanischer Hof for three nights in early June, 2003. I loved the hotel, located right on the Ku'damm. It's a quick walk to the metro and there's lots of shops and restaurants close by. Our room was lovely, quiet and spacious. The breakfast was the best we had while in Germany, some buffet items, some cooked to order and included in the room price. The service was outstanding, all in all a wonderful experience. I am definitely planning to stay here again and recommend it highly.

4 of 5  Olde world with character, A TripAdvisor Member, Melbourne, October 7, 2008

Our initial reaction was what have we done, as the decor is certainly old fashioned and cluttered. Felt we were in someone's home, but we were pleasantly surprised. Our room was large and very clean, although uncomfortable "european" pillows. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfasts were fantastic! The location is also excellent in a very nice part of Berlin. Could have spent longer in this great city. Next time we would hire bikes as the bike baths look very safe, however public transport was a breeze.

4 of 5  Another thumbs up, A TripAdvisor Member, Fabriano, May 21, 2008

Yes, another positive review for this fine wee hotel in this marvellous city - it's a doddery sort of old-worlde place that's maybe not perfect for wild clubbing kids perhaps, though they might appreciate it in a kitsch sort of way, but otherwise it's a great place to relax after another exhausting day of sightseeing, the rooms are indeed spacious and sprawlable, and the breakfasts are of a suitably Germanic substantialness. Only two very minor grumbles: when I ask for a double room, I like a real double bed, not two singles in a double frame, so that every time I roll over to kiss the wife I get stuck like a shoe in a tramline, and when I ask for local restaurant advice I don't want to be told "oh,they're all good" when the first night's mediocre fare amply disproved this. But all in all a great stay.

4 of 5  Very nice Berlin Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Norway, May 8, 2008

We stayed at the Askanscher Hof for 3 nights together with 3 other couples (friends). We all got very nice rooms; and some of them were really spacious. They were all spotlessly clean. Our group also had our own oval breakfast-table every morning, with great service. Order an egg – just to get the cute little egg-warmers!

We did not have the largest room, but one of nicest. We had our own little “garden-terrace” (see pic) facing the boulevard.

Kurfürstendamm (or Kudamm, as the locals say), is former West-Berlin. If you want to stay at this part of the town the location is great. Kudamm is a nice boulevard with a lot of great designer-shops. If we go back to this part of town I would certainly try to get a room at the A. Hof.

But; I think that the most exciting areas of Berlin today are in the former East parts of the town. We will probably rather stay in one of these areas next time. Having said that – it is easy to get to these parts of town from the Askanischer Hof using the S-Bahn, that takes you right to Alexanderplatz or the Museum Island.

We loved Berlin – and we will be back!

4 of 5  old style grandeur, A TripAdvisor Member, belfast, March 4, 2008

we recently returned from berlin, having stayed in the askanischer hof hotel for 3 nights. this hotel is is a great location in the middle of k'damm. there are 2 underground stations nearby, and the bus service is handy.

the hotel itself is something out of the ordinary. my first thought was that it was a touch of faded grandeur- but in fact the hotel is a touch of class. the room we were given was right next to reception- yet we never heard a noise. the room itself was enormous- and very comfortable. the bathroom was modern and spotless, with a better shower than we have at home!. there was even a little library in the corner of the room . the staff were extrememley courteous and the breakfast was great- its worth asking for a boiled egg just to get the little egg cosy it is served with.

berlin is a fantastic city- and really friendly- which i wasn't expecting. the highlights were the holocaust memorial and museum, the reichstag, brandenburg gate and the topography of terror- which would make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

eating out was reasonably priced and delicious. i would recommend reinhard's restaurant particularly.
