Bad experience at the Hampton Inn

1 of 5  Bad experience at the Hampton Inn, A TripAdvisor Member, Hopkins, MN, August 23, 2007

My girlfriends and I stayed here on a weekend trip to Duluth. We had problems with this hotel from the moment we walked in.

First of all, we hadn't even been in our room for 90 seconds when my friend cut her foot on a shard of glass. We looked on the floor and found several peices of glass on the carpet. We called down to complain, and the front desk sent up some teenage boy in street clothes who vaccumed up the glass. Before leaving he said, "if you find more glass, let me know." No apology. We had to call down and talk to a manager, who apologized and gave us a discount. Later we saw that teenage boy drinking beer on the patio with his friends. Nice.

The houskeeping service was a disaster. The beds were sloppily made and wet towels were left on the floor.

The free "hot" breakfast was really just a continental breakfast.

I later wrote a letter to the Hampton Inn to complain about our bad experience. The general manager called me back and acted really rude and hostile.

I would never go back. I don't think this is a terrible hotel, I just think we got unlucky and had a bad experience.

5 of 5  Terrific Value, Nice Accommodations, A TripAdvisor Member, Twin Cities, MN, July 31, 2008

What a great place to stay-- and so reasonably priced. If you're looking for swankier accommodations, you can find them nearby-- but if you're looking for a cozy place with a relaxed atmosphere that's right in the middle of all the major Duluth attractions, this is it. There's a gorgeous verandah (with the most comfortable couches you've ever sat in, no lie) and outdoor seating that overlooks the Lake Walk, and you can sit there and watch ships and horses drawn carriages and happy people pass by. The complementary hot breakfast was terrific-- pancakes and sausage one day, ham and egg scramble another, plus homemade biscuits every day, fruit, cereal, bagels, donuts, juice, and great coffee. Plus there's fresh baked cookies in the afternoon, and coffee and apples all day...a nice touch. Everyone at the motel was very friendly, and housekeeping decorated my daughter's bed with the stuffed animals that were strewn all over the room. The pool and hot tub were nice...not super deluxe or anything, but great for kids. Oh, and free wireless too, plus a computer in the lobby. The one drawback was that our room was small, but for the price, we didn't care. The motel couldn't be at a better location--right off of 35, right on the Lake Walk, in walking distance of everything you need for a terrific stay in Duluth.

5 of 5  wonderful hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Tower, MN, May 5, 2008

We spent the weekend at the Hampton Inn in Duluth. We had reserved a city view room, but were upgraded to a Canal Viewat check in. The view was incredible. This hotel is right on the shore of Lake Superior with the Duluth Lakewalk just steps away. The first night was rainy and stormy and the waves were huge. We saw several big ships come in and leave the Duluth harbor. The weather the rest of the weekend was wonderful and we were able to enjoy the Lakewalk .

The rooms were spotless and very comfortable, with a fridge and coffee maker. Breakfast was great and available from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. All the staff was cheerful and helpful. Our only complaint was the on demand tv internet which was impossibly slow. We complained and were immediately credited. We will definitely be back and would recommend this hotel.

5 of 5  Pleasant, Good Service, and Good Price, A TripAdvisor Member, Coon Rapids, MN, August 11, 2007

Stayed for one night. Clean, nicely decorated, pleasant environment. Good view of lake (two windows, not picture window or balcony). Price about $10 less per night than Comfort Suites but very comparable to it. Breakfast was good with a hot entry. Service was very attentive: AC fan was set for AUTO rather than ON which led to alternate hot and cold - maintenance quickly responded to correct the situation (very impressed). Furthest away from Grandmas on Canal Point (closest is Comfort Suites and next is Inn on Lake Superior), but Hampton is right next door to Inn on Lake Superior. Hampton actually closer to some shopping and restaurants depending on what you are looking for and is right on the lake same as the other two hotels. For the price, Hampton is the best deal of the three!

5 of 5  Peace and Quiet, A TripAdvisor Member, North Shore, Minnesota, June 9, 2007

My husband and I have never done anything special for our anniversary, so this year we decided to spend the night in Duluth at a hotel near the Aerial Lift Bridge. We chose to say at the Hampton. When I made the reservation, I mentioned our anniversary. Our room was on the Lake side, was clean and comfortable. There was also a complimentary bottle of wine chilling in a bucket waiting for us.

The view outside our window was amazing. We had a clear view of the canal, as well as the City of Duluth. My husband and I made it a point of getting up early to watch the sun rise over Lake Superior and we weren't disappointed.

The staff were all very much "Minnesota Nice".

The Hampton is centrally located to the best of what Duluth has to offer: The Aerial Lift Bridge, restaurants, shopping, entertainment (including The Omnimax), the aquarium, and marine museum. You can't go wrong staying at the Hampton.

5 of 5  Quiet, great stay, A TripAdvisor Member, St Paul, Minnesota, May 28, 2007

Stayed here two nights (Fri and Saturday) with my husband during the Memorial Day Weekend and had a wonderful time.

We didn't plan on staying too long in our room, so our only goal was to find a relatively inexpensive place to stay in walking distance to some canal park attractions and so we can drive up to visit some of the state parks driving distance away. We saved some money and got the city view room. We figured we could just walk around the backside of the hotel and see the lake without any issues.

We stayed on the 3rd floor, city side view. The hotel room was clean and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was ok. Nothing to write home about... The usual cereal, bagels, fruit and yogurt. The free "hot meal" was ham and eggs for both nights. I was thinking maybe they would have sausage. The eggs and ham were round and flattened as if they were sliced like a loaf of bread. Never seen that before. (I guess you have to stay here to see it). The staff did a great job replenshing the food when it was low.

The hotel had a wonderful sunroom facing and just steps to Lake Superior. It is a short walk to Grandma's Saloon, the Aerial Lift Bridge and in walking distance to Fitgers.

We didn't really talk to the staff or they didn't really say much to us either. They checked us in and checked us out. The check out was quick. All in all a great stay!!! I'd stay here again.

5 of 5  Great hotel and location, A TripAdvisor Member, saint paul, mn, March 1, 2007

Stayed 2 nights for a conference and had a great stay. Room was large and comfortable. Bed was fluffy and plenty of pillows. Good selection of channels on the TV and a great free breakfast buffet. No problems at all and staff was friendly and efficient.

5 of 5  Very Helpfull Staff, A TripAdvisor Member, loretto, minnesota, August 22, 2006

5 of 5  Great Place !!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Horace, ND, April 4, 2006

We were searching for a moderately priced hotel for a wedding weekend and came across the Hampton and believe me, it was worth every penny. Great location (Canal Park)and very clean. The staff was really accomodating and friendly. The room was spacious and quiet even though it was a very busy weekend with alot of students from a local conference and a youth hockey tournament. We are planning another trip at the end of July and will make plans on staying there. My only complaint was that the elevator must have had maintenance that week because it had the aroma of burnt oil. Other than that, Great location, friendly staff, and Great hotel.

5 of 5  Great Location, A TripAdvisor Member, Parma, OH, November 22, 2003

What a beautiful place to stay. The hotel is located right on the lakeshore. We had a perfect view of the canal and lake from our suite.

Great Breakfast! We will definately be back.

5 of 5  excellent, August 19, 2002

Very nice, super clean, exceptionally friendly and accomodating staff, especially Katy & Jeff at the front desk. Beautiful solarium and outdoor patio right along the lake walk and the lake. Pool area also very nice w/jacuzzi. Highly recommend this hotel.

4 of 5  Very nice, A TripAdvisor Member, Minnesota, July 8, 2008

This hotel is like all the other Hampton Inn's in Minnesota.

It is very clean and has a great (free) breakfast in the morning.

I found it odd that it doesn't offer a senior discournt unless you have an AARP card,. I think this should be changed.

Nice view of the lake from the breakfast room and it's just a hop, skip and jump to Lake Superior from the hotel's backdoor.

4 of 5  Great views of Lake Superior, A TripAdvisor Member, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, May 8, 2008

Great hotel with a great view of Lake Superior. Have a little deck area next to the breakfast location. The little deck is very inviting to relax and have coffee or tea. Watched the sunrise from this location and it was incrediable. Some of the room also have a lake view which is nice. But it's still a Hampton Inn, the only real complaint that they didn't have automatic doors like other Hampton Inns which was inconvienant.

4 of 5  Good location right on Lake Superior, A TripAdvisor Member, Carlow, Ireland, September 10, 2007

The hotel was fine and well located. I hated the plastic cutlery and cups used for breakfast. I usually dislike clinging plastic shower curtains, but in this case because of a curved shower curtain rail the curtains didn't cling. I liked the hotel and didn't see any other hotel in the area that i would have preferred to stay in. Also liked the free coffee available all the time.

4 of 5  Nice place near a lot of sights, A TripAdvisor Member, Janesville, Wisconsin, July 15, 2007

We stayed at this Hampton Inn one night for our anniversary and I do believe it to be a superb location for your travels while in Duluth. The view from our 3rd floor room was beautiful, overlooking the harbor. At night, we sat on the back porch and watched the ships come into the harbor, people walking the boardwalk and people taking surrey rides. Our room was clean and had a comfortable bed. It was not very big in size but adequate. Pool and whirlpool nice and clean. The continental breakfast was nice and had a very good variety of fresh foods. We met a lot of fellow tourists at our stay at this Hampton Inn (as there was a Harley rally there) and I can honestly say that we have never met such nice people. Duluth is a very nice town and this Hampton Inn has a great location, near restaurants, shops, the aquarium, etc. We will be back.

4 of 5  Gotta see Duluth, A TripAdvisor Member, Central WI, September 23, 2006

Very clean and atractive with a great location. However, with such a wonderful view of the lake, I would have expected larger windows. A little disapointing. Otherwise a great property.

4 of 5  Nice place, no problems, A TripAdvisor Member, Saint Paul, Minnesota, November 18, 2005

The Hampton Inn was exactly what I needed when I was there - someplace that had a good location (right on the lake in busy Canal Park area) at a reasonable price.

All of the businesses in Canal Park are easily within walking distance. The parking is excellent. The hotel was relatively quiet. The breakfast was good. The bed was very comfortable, and the room was very clean.

I've got no problem recommending this establishment to anyone, and I'll definitely consider it next time I'm in Duluth.

4 of 5  Two thumbs up for the Hampton Inn!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, September 19, 2005

We just returned from a two night stay at the Hampton Inn in Duluth. We were there the weekend of the Northshore Inline Marathon, so prices were hiked up quite a bit. We decided to pay the extra for what had appeared to us a nice hotel upon checking it out last year. We had a continually bad experience at the other waterfront hotel we used to stay at on this weekend each year so we wanted a definite upgrade.

We were more than pleased with all the hotel had to offer. We had a clean, nicely decorated room. We had a lake side room with windows that opened to let in the lake breeze and views of the ships coming and going. We were on the second floor and couldn't hear the people outside so it was nice to have the window cracked at night. I was surprised to find a bigger sized mini-fridge in our room. No where on any websites did it mention this ammenity! It was nice to store milk, pop, and restaraunt leftovers in there. We were never able to hear anyone in the neigboring room and barely any foot traffic in the room above us. One thing that was annoying was that the doors are rather loud when they close shut. I sleep with ear plugs when I travel, so this wasn't too bad for me.

A guard patrols the lobby and pool area at night after 10, which I found nice to deal with anyone who could be come unruly. A child was with his father after kids were supposed to be out of the pool at 10. He wasn't bothering us, but the guard did ask us if we minded if he was in the pool otherwise he could ask him to leave by the rules. I though this was nice to enforce the rules.

The breakfast each morning was more than enough!!! We had very tasty sausage and eggs the first morning and french toast and sausage the next. There is always an assortment of cereals, toasts, bagels, doughnuts, fresh fruit, juices, coffees (decaf, reg, and robust!), oatmeals....etc...too much to name!!! And the ladies who stock and clean the area were incredibly friendly and always on top of it. We left stuffed and didn't need to eat again until supper! All the staff we encountered was friendly, knowledgeable, and personable. We highly recommend this place at any price!

4 of 5  Nice Accommodations, A TripAdvisor Member, May 29, 2005

We enjoyed our 3 night stay. Our room was attractive, clean and quiet. The continental breakfast was excellent. Plenty of fresh fruit, one hot dish ( pancakes+saugage or eggs+ham), yogurt, pastries, cereal, juice, milk and coffee. The front desk was helpful and friendly. The location could not be better.

4 of 5  Nice Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Mankato, MN, October 12, 2004

This was a very nice hotel in the wonderful location of Canal Park. Make sure you reserve a lakeside room because it is not much more expensive than the rooms with a view of the parking lot. Although, you won't be spending much time in the room, so it might not be that big of a deal. It had everything we needed....hot water, lots of towels, clean room, working TV, and mainly location, location, location!!!

4 of 5  Good deal, great stay!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, Owatonna, MN, August 26, 2004

My family has stayed at the Hampton Inn (Canal Park) in Duluth 1-3 times per year for the past 3-4 years. We have always had excellent customer service and always found our rooms to be clean and comfortable. I have always found the hotel and its staff to be very accommidating of any requests that our family has had--such as early check-in, etc. Booking as early as possible can sometimes ensure a lower room rate. One item to be aware of is that the hotel no longer accepts personal checks. Payment must be made in the form of cash or credit card.

Room rates are a little bit high for this 'category' of hotel but I can cost justify the stays here because we normally stay during Holidays (such as Memorial and Labor Day weekend) which are bound to produce higher room rates AND we get a free continental breakfast every morning, which means I don't need to pay for my family to eat out at a restaurant. The contenential breakfast has something for everyone...cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs, toast, bagels, doughnuts, muffins, milk, juice, coffee...you name it! I have even noticed that some afternoons the staff puts out fresh fruit and/or cookies for the folks who have been traveling and are checking in to their rooms for the evening.

The hotel itself is very clean and comfortable. There is a nice lobby area with sitting space as well as a 4-season sitting room facing Lake Superior. The 4-season sitting room has a great view of Lake Superior. We can exit the 4-season sitting room and be on the lakewalk in a matter of a few short steps. The hotel is situated within walking distance of several restaurants, bars, and quaint shops. Safety wise, all exterior doors are locked after 10:00 (?) p.m. and you must have a room key to enter. After 10:00 p.m. guests can enter via the lobby entrance. The parking lot is well lit and I have always felt safe coming and going from the hotel, even late at night.

The hotel posts a schedule of ships that are scheduled to arrive and/or depart the port and the approximate times of their arrival/departure. Although times are approximate, it allows our family to easily schedule other activities during times that we know a ship won't be arriving or departing. They also can supply you with ample information concerning "downtown" Duluth and activites to do in that area of the city.

We have our next trip to Duluth already scheduled and we are staying at the Hampton Inn yet again, and my family can't wait!

4 of 5  A very nice hotel in Canal Park!, A TripAdvisor Member, Frisco, Texas, April 28, 2004

My family and I just returned from our second stay in the last 10 months at the Hampton Inn & Suites Duluth. I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The rooms are clean, the hotel staff is super-friendly, the free continental breakfast is great, and the location in Canal Park right on Lake Superior can't be beat. And with AAA discounts, the price is always right. I'd highly recommend this hotel. :)

2 of 5  Not Friendly, Not business friendly, A TripAdvisor Member, Duluth, Minnesota, October 3, 2007

Upon Check in the staff was rude, and uninterested in my business. They were not friendly, which is funny, since they guarentee your stay based on this. My room was very clean, and the bed was comfy, but furniture was cheesy and cheap. Breakfast was great! The business center consisted of one computer, which is always being used. Being a business traveler, I found this frusterating. The pool area was AWFUL, hot and steamy (like a suana), impossible to enjoy or breathe in the area.

2 of 5  Not Very Friendly!, A TripAdvisor Member, duluth, March 27, 2006

Management was very terrible, at least at check out anyways!! Don't think we will stay here again, we will try somewhere else. There are many to choose from down in the Canal Park area.

Pool is very small, the continental breakfasts was okay, good variety to choose from.

The management there sucks. They take weeks to get back to you if you have questions and aren't helpful at all. I am very disappointed about how they communicate with young people as if they don't matter. I would never stay there.
