We stayed at Club Quarters Philadelphia for a weekend in March. The rooms had all the amenities one needs for a hotel stay. The bed was super comfortable and everything was very clean. The building itself is old so the hallways are narrow and the room set up is interesting but everything was so clean and well maintained. It is in the heart of Center City and just right in the midst of shops, restaurants and attractions. What we loved the most was the service. We checked in at about 9 pm and were assigned a room by their automated check-in with 2 twin beds. They promptly switched us to a king bed room. Which was huge! Bigger than a regular king. On saturday evening we decided to have dinner at a popular steakhouse with hard to get seating. Their concierge made one phonecall for us and not only were we seated promptly when we arrived but got VIP treatment. This made our weekend so special. We are going back to Philly in a few weeks and booked our stay at Club Quarters the very day we got back. WE also told our friends about it and they are staying there too! I've stayed here twice on business trips. Everything went fine. The staff was friendly and helpful. The Club-size room was small but clean and comfortable for one person. There was free wireless internet. The location was great, in a very lively neighborhood with lots of good restaurants and shops. Love staying at Club Quarters. The location is always quiet. Rooms are spacious and clean. Free internet and free water bottles in hallway. I've stayed at several Club Quarters locations and have never been dissapointed. Solid choice. Hotel was immaculate! I would definitely stay here again, next time I go to Philly. My friends and I stayed here at the end of July 2008 for our annual vacation. We chose this hotel based on reviews and an idea of the location as well as the price for comparable hotels. We were so pleased!! This hotel was just a few blocks from everything and was in a perfect location! I don’t know about the parking b/c we took the train in from the airport and if you don’t have to have a car I recommend this option to everyone. I know parking in Philly is a nightmare and can be expensive-just watch Parking Wars on A&E! We had two rooms between the three of us. Two of us shared 1 room and our other friend had a suite. The rooms are small and the room I shared had two twin beds which were just fine with us. The bathroom had a shower only and a large mirror w/hair dryer. My only complaint about the bathroom was there was no place to put toiletries in the shower but on the floor. However, everything was clean and pristine. My other friend and I are freaks about checking the beds for bed bugs because they are common in many hotels so that’s the first thing we do anywhere we go-lol. I am happy to report that there were NO BED BUGS in both rooms. The one feature that we all loved about this hotel was the bottles of water by the elevators that you fill yourself-very cool idea! The staff was VERY accommodating, friendly and helpful. We didn’t eat at Davio’s but we did have drinks there and they seemed priced pretty average. As a note, we loved this hotel for the reasons previously mentioned but most importantly because it went above our expectations. We were looking for the cheapest hotel the closest to historic Philly that was safe, clean, had a bed and shower-we were not looking for or expecting the Ritz. The rooms were small but accommodating, the building is older and shows wear in some spots-but they were doing a nice remodel with a more modern look and there is no free breakfast but there is coffee! If we ever return to Philly we would totally stay here again! Hope this helps everyone. I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel, especially after reading the reviews online. Located in an excellent location for business, shopping, and dining. Very reasonably priced. CLEAN: I always bring a pillow and bed sheet, just in case. I didn't even need to bring them out of my bag at Club Quarters. You're supposed to check in and out at the electronic kiosk, but there was always someone friendly at the front desk. They offer amenities closets on several floors where you can just grab extra towels and other toiletries. Free bottled water on each floor, and coffee and tea station in the main lobby with to-go cups. This place is first on my list for my next overnight stay in Philly. My partner and I booked the hotel based on Trip Advisor reviews and the reasonable rates. We didn't expect too much but were amazed at this place. The room was big and spotless. In the hallway was a filtered water cooler with new plastic bottles that we could fill and take with us (great when hydrating before the marathon). The staff were always available, helping us find tourist spots and restaurants. Three terminals in the lobby, all with high speed internet - there was always one free. Every morning there was AMAZING, free coffee in the lobby supplied by the attached restaurant. I will definitely book the Club Quarters again when I'm in Philly again. during my short trip to philly i book a single room at club quaters. the price was 90-something dollars plus taxes and fees which ended up $110. which was the best rate i could find for a hotel of this rank on friday night. it was quite difficult to find a hotel when i arrived there but that's what you're getting for a hotel in the middle of the city. the front desk clercs were super sweet and helpful. the room was very nice and high ceilings are to die for. very good job on decorating the hotel in the lobby. didnt get a chance to try the restaurant but im sure it should be a good experience as well. i left the hotel very satisfied and i will surely stay there again next time i'll be in Philly. I had read reviews first, so I knew the rooms would be small. I told my travelling companion this, and when we first arrived he replied - the room isn't small! By US standards it is. But I've stayed in many small European hotels, and I'd say this room was as large or LARGER than most small European hotels. Everything was very nice and in excellent condition. In fact, everything looked brand new! I've had back problems at home - but sleeping in my twin bed - I had NO back problems the entire day. Everything was perfect, including the staff, who were very friendly. Room was quiet. Location was excellent - right in City Center, and only 2 blocks from the Suburban train station. But as others wrote - no fridge, and no shelf in shower to hold washcloth, soap, shampoo etc. That they should add - but certainly was only a minor inconvenience. Would definitely stay there again! as mentioned by other guests, this is a great bargain, especially if you dont need any of the "frills" that come with other hotels (which are really falling by the wayside anyhow). I was a 1st time traveller to philly so i had no idea where it was. Let me emphasize to other first timers that this is a GREAT location for many things--Rittenhouse, UPenn, Chestnut Street shopping, Market street theatre, tons of restaurants...maybe a bit of a hike to "hisotric Philly." But I managed to walk the 20-30 minutes to the liberty bell and independence hall...seemed very safe in the daytime. The rooms are great--a bit small--but great especially for 1 or 2. The furnishings are all new, or at least seemed new. Elevator IS slow, but no biggie--it eventually comes and is secure with your keycard required for operation. The staff was helpful enuf, but checkin/out is automated. Wireless is free (perk!). Dont come for the gym--its a joke...but they claim that they will bring you a stairmaster to yoru room (where will they put it?). There's a real posh restaurant downstairs called Davios that the lobby shares a bathroom with. You will get funny glances from the patrons if you walk thru in jeans and t-shirt, like I did. Liek all CQ properties it has the neato water bottle filling stations by the elevators. They also have a great menu for delivery, and will put on yoru room bill (I suppose great if someone else is picking up the tab). I recommend this place not only for business, but also for sightseers (sp?). I was able to do both, and I got a rate under a $100 per night. Cant beat that in center city! Club Quarters, Philly, is exactly what I needed for a two night business trip. It is centrally located, clean, and tastefully decorated. There are computers in the lobby with attached printers, cookies in the evening, coffee in the morning, and purified water machines on each floor. The fitness facility was basic and clean and the bed was comfortable. The front desk staff was professional and helpful. I will definitely stay here the next time I go to Philly. I'd never stayed at a Club Quarters before, but two friends of mine had stayed at the Club Quarters in Philadelphia on separate occasions and both recommended it highly. It was cheap, clean, and comfortable, and my view from the 9th floor was great! Location wise, it couldn't be better...it's right next to subway and bus stops, and on a nice day, the walk to the old city is great. It's also close to the Greyhound bus terminal and several ZipCar locations which was perfect for my trip. I spent only $100 on a Saturday night which to me is unheard of -- and kind of amazing -- especially for such a decent hotel in the middle of a city. The bed was so comfy, there was free wireless internet (although I didn't get a signal at the desk and had to use it from the bed), the carpet had a big stain right in the middle but it didn't ruin my time there. Also, the elevators were running extremely slowly because only one was in service but still not a huge deal. There was free bottled water in the halls, the gym was excellent (and they bring certain equipment to your room if you so desire), and the big heavy curtains were excellent at keeping out the morning sun and allowing me to sleep until check out! Gadgets in the room -- like the cordless phone, TV, LCD alarm clock, etc -- are more up-to-date than in any hotel I've stayed at. There aren't really any frills or luxuries at this hotel, but it's perfect for the travelers who need a super comfortable place to sleep for a few nights. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone. I read a lot of reviews about there being "too much noise" from the street, but...you're in a city. What do you expect? If you don't like it, turn on the fan for some white noise to lull you to sleep, or go back to your farm. Also -- they offer self check in/out, but the staff was great and attentive. Very friendly. If you're looking for a clean, inexpensive, safe room in a great part of the city-then look no further. Club quarters met all of my expectations. 3 walking blocks from the rail station (airport transportation) and 30 minutes walking from every attraction in the ENTIRE city. The reading lobby was comfortable-free coffee, tea, and water every day-all day long. Newspapers/books and computers for guests to use. They even lent me an umbrella on a rainy day. My only complaint was that 1 of 2 elevators was operational--so a lot longer wait time every time I went/left my room. If you're in Philadelphia on business and have a tight budget, consider Club Quarters. It is centrally located in City Center on the corner of 17th street & Chestnut. This is a Priceline participating property so you can get an even better rate than the already low rates advertised on their web site. I was attending a conference at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, which was about 5 blocks away. The walk wasn't long but the Chestnut street buses or the Market Frankford subway on Market street were other ways to get there. Whereas my colleagues were paying about $170 elsewhere with internet access as an extra charge, I was paying about half that at Club Quarters, which included complimentary internet access. To get to the lobby to check-in, enter at 1628 Chestnut and wait for 1 of 2 elevators. There is a staircase but it is roped off for good reason - it doesn't lead to the check-in area. Once in the elevator, go up one floor to the lounge. You can either use the self-serve kiosks or check-in with a staff member. By using the kiosks, checking in and out was the fastest I've ever experienced anywhere. The lounge features a spacious resting area with 3 internet stations. Coffee and newspapers are also available when spending time in the lounge. Guest rooms are accessible through the elevators located at the exit of the lounge. The hallways to guest rooms have 3 things to note: 1. there is a station of empty water bottles where you can fill your own chilled filtered water. This was very handy for me. 2. There is a closet with irons and ironing boards 3. There is another closet of blankets, pillows, and other room accessories that you may need more of - help yourself. As I was a solo traveler, I got a room with 2 twin beds, which was OK with me. The room has a closet with full-length mirror and strong wooden coat hangers, armchair, work desk, LCD TV (cable TV only, no movies for a fee), coffee maker, clock radio with iPod/mp3 input, and both a standard and cordless phone. The bathroom was shower-only, with an adjustable height shower head. A make-up mirror and hair dryer are also supplied. Standard hotel toiletries are provided, but also includes mouthwash. With all this packed into the room, there isn't much space to move around, but then again most of my time was spent at my conference, not in my room. Late check out is available. A stay up to 3 PM will cost $35 extra while leaving at 6 PM will cost $72. I got tremendous value staying at Club Quarters- it fulfilled all my business needs: a room for the night, a quick shower, a place to wash up, unlimited internet access, and plenty of water to quench my thirst (I was practicing a presentation in my room for the conference I was attending). It was a most positive experience for me. Great, safe bet for a very pleasing, comfortable stay. The Hotel is centrally located in a great location. The standard rooms are best and are the least expensive. Most are set-back from the hallway and appear to have been one large old style room divided into two seperate rooms. But that's OK- because these rooms are very quiet and cozy, being insulated away from any hallway noise. Very nice decor. And after staying in a suite this time, I will go back to a standard room again next time. Extras like a few books in the rooms, coffee maker, and a beautiful lobby with dark wood, plush sofas and internet stations make this Hotel really great. There is also a wonderful Italian restaurant called "Davio's" in the hotel. The front desk staff is extremely attentive and personable. I got a good deal on Club Quarters Philadelphia through Orbitz. They are a good value for a 3 star property. The hotel and room have the expected touches. Don't expect a large room (it's a little more European sized). The entry way off the street is not what you would expect, but the second floor lobby is above average. I spent two nights over a weekend at the Club Quarters, booked directly with the hotel at what they called a preferred rate via the University of Pennsylvania--$114 a night. The lobby area is very comfortable for relaxation, and there are two computers and printers available for complementary guest use, although they were nearly always in use when I was around the lobby. The room was a little small for the class of hotel, but quite clean and comfortable, with a desk, microwave and mini-fridge. No inroom safe, though, and the carpeting has seen better days. The bed was comfy with a generous loft to the duvet. I particularly liked the attached restaurant, an above average steakhouse with superb service. You will need a reservation, though, if you want to eat at a reasonable hour, at least on weekends, since most of their business appears to be non-hotel guests. The main downside was the tiny bathroom--no tub, just a small shower, no fan or opening window, and spartan toiletries--a combo shampoo and conditioner that wasn't very good, small soaps, and a mouthwash. No lotion at all, no shoe mitt, no cotton swabs, as you might expect with this class of hotel. Overall, though, it's a screaming bargain given the location. My husband and I spent the weekend in Philadelphia recently and stayed at Club Quarters. We had what was called a suite--outside the door it said "Executive Suite". Very spacious--a large open area with kitchenette, couch, chair, and dining table, opening to the bedroom area. Standard sized bathroom with tub/shower. Lots of windows, free internet, very clean. The bed was very comfortable. Davio's restaurant on the lobby level was wonderful. Pricey, true. But excellent. Hotel guests get a 15% discount, so that helped. The parking lot they give a discount for is around the corner and across the street. It cost about $27 for 24 hours. Kind of a lot we thought, but oh well, it's the city, right? I have heard standard guest rooms are very small--I would recommend a suite. It seemed to cost the same as smaller rooms on Hotels.com. We'd definitely go back. Booked this hotel for an overnight stay, for my husband and myself. Three other couples also joined us staying here. Nice place to stay to be close to some great Philadelphia spots, restaurants, bars, shopping, Rittenhouse Sq.Park only few blks away. Great place for a wknd getaway. We all had a good experience. Rooms are smallish, but fine for 1 night stay. Tall celings, microwave, and frig. One of my friends reserved suite, but they said only kitchenette room available. Not really much of a difference in size, bigger room included a table and 2 chairs and bigger couch. They had to pay same price as suite, but we all recieved coupons for our next visit at a big discount. I'd stay again. We paid $129 total inc taxes, very good for Phili hotel Sat. night stay. Parking across the street under Liberty Mall, that was pricey, $32 total for Sat to Sunday afternoon. Might look for other parking next time, but I'll stay at this hotel again. This hotel, almost at the corner of 17th & Chestnut, is a good bargain for downtown Philadelphia, and for those who want to be in the center of things this is a great place to stay. Keep in mind though that this is not a luxury hotel. The carpet in my room was worn and stained and felt damp from all the humidity in the city. The bathroom floor was sticky. The shower floor was a little slimy. (They did come and clean the bathroom more thoroughly after I left a note at the front desk.) There was no place in the shower to put any soap or toiletries -- you had to pile everything on the floor. After a certain hour in the evening there is no one to do maintenance: so if the lightbulb in your bathroom burns out at the wrong hour, as happened to someone on my floor, tough luck. The bathroom was well equipped with a large makeup mirror and a hair dryer but it was quite small. Otherwise the room was comfortable. As long as you are aware that in some respects you are getting what you pay for, you will not be disappointed. If you are checking out Philadelphia on foot then this location is perfect! I was able to walk to all historical sites I wanted to see and the train station was only two blocks away so was a convenient way to make it back to the airport. The rooms are very small but still very nice, they are laid out in a smart way. They held my luggage for me while I played tourist all day. My only complaint is that I had requested a crib and they didn't hold it for me. They said they only had three and had already given them all away, so that was an issue since I had my 7 month old with me. Free internet but the computers in the lobby were all in use anytime I wanted to use them. I can stay at Club Quarters with a membership through my job. They offer discount weekend rates that are given out very sporatically. I was able to stay here for $64 on a Saturday night - in town just to catch the Phillies game. The location is great for general sightseeing and accessibilty to the subway. Buses run right on Chestnut. Many restaurants/bars to choose from and lots of shopping. Felt safe walking around - even at night there were alot of people still out and about. The facility is pretty basic Club Quarters- lobby is lovely and has 2 computers. The room was generic - very small but was expecting that here. Clean and comfy. Would definately stay there again - especially if I could get such a great rate !! My boyfriend and I stayed for one night. The room was clean and bit on the small side as described by other reviews. It is located in a prime location and the price is excellent for the location. Other reviews described it as very noisy and yes it was noisy but when you stay in a large city in the center of it, there will be noise. We are heading back to Philly in about a month and are planning on booking there again and would stay there again in the future. The only downside is that there is no parking so we had to park across the street and it was a bit pricey but that is part of driving in a big city. This hotel was very nice. It had internet access for free in the lobby. The room we booked thru Expedia was very very small. (we had to remove a lampshade to see the tv from the bed). But it was very clean and they did let us upgrade (for a fee) to a kitchenette, which was well worth it. The staff was friendly, attached restaurant looked really good (didn't get there though). It is in a great location - lots of shopping and food nearby. Very easy to get to by car, and close to the Amtrak station. About 20 -25 minutes walk to historical stuff or a cheap cab ride. REALLY easy to catch a cab from this location too. I would not hesitate to stay there again - but would definitely get the kitchenette. The hotel is in the middle of the town so it is accessible to anywhere within the downtown. The room is nice and clean, but at first I was given a room without double-gazed windows so I could hear a lot of noise from down street. In addition, the walls between the rooms are paper-thin and I could hear the conversation very clearly from the room next to mine! The day after I requested to change the room and the staff was quick and swap another room for me with the double-gazed windows so I could manage to have some good sleep at night. I will stay in this hotel again if I happen to visit Philly in the near future, the only thing I want them to improve is find a way to soundproof the walls. I selected this Hotel after reading good reviews on this site and I was not disappointed. Absolutely in the centre of all the shops, historical stuff, dining and nightlife of Olde Philadelphia. Room small but totally functional and comfortable. Coffee on tap in the mornings together with newspapers etc. The price was very good, especially for a City Centre. Highly recommended for the traveller What we enjoyed: *VALUE : A terrific price allowed for us to overlook any minor shortcomings. *SAFETY: A secure environment with the rooms located far away from street level. *COMFORT: Bed was small but comfortable. Shower H2O pressure was consistent and reliable. Furninshings {including plumbing} were modern. *LOCATION: Within walking distance to many items and metro is accessible within 2 blocks to access the Historic area. Liberty Center shops are right across the street and there are lots of pleasant restaurants within a few blocks. What was disappointing: *No fridge! This was the only serious drawback for us--as any PM snacks we might bring back to the room had to be of the non-perishable variety! What was irrelevent: * room size was smaller than expected but certainly something we got used to. Kinda snug and romantic!! We would definitely return! My joke to a colleague was that it should have been called "Close Quarters." Yes, the room was tiny, but extremely clean. Plus, the place had an excellent location (near some great high -end restaurants), and was a 10 minute walk from the convention center. The staff were more than pleasant, and the lobby had a nice TV and three computers to check you email. It was a great value. If you want a bite late at night, the 24 hour diner on 18th (45 second walk) was great. Booked CQ,blind after checking websites, reviews and City attractions. Have to say we were not disappointed. Transfer for wife and self (mature couple) was 15minute taxi ($30 inc.tip) from airport.Easy to find on Chestnut Street. The stand alone clock outside the entrance is a good marker. Lobby is on first floor accessed by lift (elevator) from street foyer. Smooth and straightforward check in,with issue of door card after scanning credit card into the system. You do need your door card to operate elevator (two of these) to rooms. Rooms are small by US standards but for any Europeans, pretty standard size and perfectly adequate.Double bed was one of the best we've slept in-very comfortable with good bedding. You get a chair at the desk (more a workstation really), TV, smallish clothes closet, decent size bathroom with big shower instead of bath.Soft, thick towels-nice! All clean and in decent decorative order. Everything worked. Just off the lobby area is a smartish Italian restaurant. Didn't use it during our 3 night stay but would have had we stayed longer. There are three free PC/Internet stations in the lobby area (as well as free wireless access throughout hotel if you're on business). Also in the lobby are free warm drinks, a larger flat screen TV, a selection of free daily newspapers, comfortable soft furnishings and a few shelves of readable books. Staff were unfailingly friendly, courteous and knew what they were doing. On the street outside,we were at first slightly disconcerted by a group of boisterous youngsters a few yards along-till we realised that they were students at the next door Art Institute taking a smoking break-absolutely not a problem. Directly across the street is a large new mall, work, apartment development called Liberty Plaza. This was handy for eating, drinking and shopping. Club Quarters is a 5 minute stroll from Maceys and City Hall. It's about 25 minutes walk to the Independence Buildings and exhibitions and about 15 minutes walk to the Convention Centre. Philly is easy to walk. When we left for New York, I was wishing I'd booked Club Quarters in NYC as we found the formula to be pleasant, comfortable and sensibly priced-especially for city type breaks when you're generally on the hoof and you need comfort and functionallity from your hotel. Acid test-would you stay again?-Yes. It was clean and conveniently located but rooms were small and I was really annoyed that although I called months in advance to get two rooms next door to each other, when I checked in (and although the hotel reception is standing right there, checking in is actually the same as an airport check in with kiosks and totally impersonal) I was told I was lucky to even get rooms on the same floor and that they couldn't help me. Really? Ok. Also parking is a NIGHTMARE and you have to walk a few blocks to get to a garage that isn't even part of hotel so this is a decent place top stay if you don't have a car and don't require rooms next door to each other. Stayed here Friday to Monday for a short getaway with my wife. The Good: great location, very reasonable price for right-in-town location, very clean, beds were comfortable, nice view from our 12th floor window. The Bad (and not really so bad, considering) small room, small bathroom (shower only) nothing special about the place, just functional accomodations. The Ugly: It costs $28/day(with hotel discount) for your car to stay here, with no in/out privelege. We ended up using public transportation to get around, which is not so bad-bus and subway stops a few blocks away. You COULD take your car out, but it's gonna cost you $15 an HOUR to park in this area. Would we stay here again? If I win the lottery or a rich relative dies, no. Otherwise, $114/night is extremely reasonable. If you're looking for a fancy, upscale experience, look somewhere else; but if you just need a good jumping-off place, the Club Quarters fits the bill. my husband and just stayed at Club Quarters on saturday night. If you need quite to sleep forget it!! at 2:30am the bars across the street let out and all you heard was loud and roudy people!! then someone kept honking their car horn for at least 20 minutes!! We were on the 7th floor and it sounded like it was right outside our window. It even kept my husband up and he usually sleeps through everything!! the bed was OK but it was alittle bouncy so if you turn over the whole matteress would move. The room itself was clean but very small, OK for a night or two. Also parking is expensive, the hotel tells you to park around the corner and they will validate your parking for 15% off we parked at 9am sat we left @ 4pm sunday and it cost us $52.00. There other parking garages around for half the amount. street parking is 2 hour meter parking. The staff kept our bags for us for the day since we got there at 9am and check in is at 3. We came back to the Hotel around 5 pm and our room was ready and the bags were up there when we checked in. On sundays they will hold your bags for a 0ne dollar fee per bag. We booked this hotel after getting a good price from priceline. It is well situated in the shopping area of town with lots of bars, restaurants and shops nearby. To enter the hotel you must take an elevator up to the lobby which is fine when it's not too busy but can lead to prolonged wait times when it is busy. The check-in is accomplished by using easy-to-use electronic terminals (like at the airport) and there are friendly, helpful desk staff to help. The best part of this hotel is the lobby - it's set up like a private members club with sofas, chairs and TVs. They also have 3 public access internet computers with a free printer available 24 hours a day. It is a nice place to relax. There are only 2 elevators that service the actual hotel rooms which again can lead to delays. The rooms themselves are comfortable but in need of updating; the bathroom was clean but dated with industrial fixtures. The beds were comfortable but the linens were threadbare. The fitness room is for some reason only open from 0600-2100 daily and had a few treadmills, a bike, and some free weights. In all, the Club Quarters gave us good value for the price we paid - had we paid more, I'd have been disappointed. Somehow ended up in a smoking room despite request otherwise. Strike one. [Who still smokes?] Printer for guest use poorly maintained (toner streaking, output not acceptable for business purposes). Strike two. Attached restaurant still excellent. We stayed here for a weekend just to get away and enjoy Philly. We booked through Priceline so we didn't have (much of) a choice. I thought it was a decent hotel although I would give it 3 stars as opposed to the 3.5 Priceline gave it. My reasoning for that is that the room was small and I didn't think it was on par with Mariott or Westin's we've stayed in. However, we had a good experience checking in. We were originally given 4th floor but asked if there was anything higher and they came back with a corner room on the 10th floor which allowed for more windows and less noise from the streets. Everything was clean and I would say our room had light to moderate wear, probably updated a few years ago. Hope this helps out with your stay. If you don't mind small rooms, I think this is a good choice. I will stay there again, as it's a great location and reasonable price compared to other downtown hotels. I was traveling for business and only needed to stay one night, and this place hit the spot. The internet worked well, which was very important, and I loved being able to get as much bottled water as I wanted. I found the room layout pleasant, except for the coffeemaker being right above the toilet, which was mildly annoying. My room was quiet and clean, though it seemed that it may have been a smoking room at one point, from a faint odor (though it didn't trouble me too much and I do have a sensitive nose). My checkin and checkout was extremely fast and smooth (they have a self-checkout kiosk) and the staff was friendly. I did have to call ahead to ask about where to park (for a reduced fee), but it was pretty easy to manage and I had no trouble at all. PA PHILADELPHIA / CLUB QUARTERS . For Philly's Rittenhouse Square art fair, the artist I crew for stayed at Club Quarters last fall and liked it. This year (2008), same lodging site, but the room had an odd odor and also the bathroom's drinking glass had lots of white dried filmy gunk at the bottom --some past guest's toothpaste or denture glue residue or some such. That was both gross and unsanitary --and led to doubt over whether the glasses there are ever actually removed and cleaned or are just given a prefunctory cold-swish in the bathroom sink. Yeccch. Now considering staying elsewhere. . UPDATE Indeed, my artist has booked lodging elsewhere for the next Rittenhouse show. Wow so much work to run a hotel and details as small as maid service quality and the staff factor make THE difference between more business in the future --or NO future business. Got this hotel through Hotwire for a decent but not stellar discount, even considering it's the tourist season and the hotel is smack dab in the center of town. My room was not as small as some folks have reportedly gotten, though not as large as, say, a good Shilo or Days Inn. The toiletries were functional, the shower was good (but missed having a bathtub after hours of walking). The bed was comfortable, the housekeeping service satisfactory, and the air conditioning was most appreciated. The complimentary Internet service worked most of the time, and the desk chair was comfortable. I had no noise problem from accompanying rooms at all and the ambient city noise didn't bother me, though it might some people who are light and/or late sleepers (e.g., garbage trucks and general city traffic from below) The free refillable distilled water on each floor was a decided four-star touch. The location is within walking distance of many good restaurants and shops and, if you're up to it, a 10 or 11 block walk to the Independence Hall area. There is easy access to the subway and regional rail, and buses are everywhere. Davio's is the restaurant attached to the hotel; I've reviewed it separately (and positively), though I didn't have breakfast or lunch there). The lobby is beautiful and has two workstations with a connected printer as well as complimentary coffee, tea, ice water - all showed a four-star touch, I thought. I think Club Quarters, at least the Philadelphia version, could possibly become a legitimate 4 star hotel or boutique type if it does two things. 1. Get some front desk help who actually welcomes and assists the guests. The front desk help I witnessed ran from apathetic to belligerent; I heard one young woman berate a potential guest who wanted to take a co-worker's reservation who couldn't make the trip in a manner which was startling even in a tough-skinned town like Philly - he couldn't do it and the hotel was otherwise booked - too bad, get over it and go to another hotel. Her version of "welcoming" me was pointing me to a machine which does a sort of automatic check in. I don't remember that she ever said "Hello." Put your credit card in and pick how many hotel key cards you want - it's really a self-check-in. You half expect them to be wearing latex gloves and surgical masks so they won't be contaminated by their guests. She couldn't have cared less if you stayed at the hotel or not...just don't bother her. To be fair, I never saw her on duty again and others seemed receive better service when checking in. I would hope so. Check out was the same thing with another worker - point to the machine, do your business, and get the hell out. There are, I think, some sort of concierge services available; I didn't need them and, after the previous experience with the staff, wasn't interesting in risking it. 2. Maintain the condition of the rooms. The color scheme is terrific, but every wall in my room, as well as the door, had either a paint chip gouged out of it or scrapes and scuffs. The wood wall against the desk had two rather strange large holes (3" in diameter large) drilled in it, with no function whatsoever, as if it had been bought from an old Westin which might have used the holes for something, but not Club Quarters. The toilet seat in the bathroom did not stay up because it didn't fit under the plastic vanity; you had to sort of prop it up while you were using it. There was a large stain in the carpet. None of this affected the quality of the stay, but they were pretty obvious and I couldn't help thinking that it would take about an hour's worth of work by unskilled labor (maybe) to spiff up the joint. Average score of three on this one with easy opportunities for improvement. So much potential and, apparently, so little time. I spent two nights at the Club Quarters and found it ok. The net connection was good, the location was ok (six or eight blocks east would have been better), most of the staff were friendly and helpful (the woman at the desk when I checked out was the exception). The rooms vary in amenities offered. I visited a friend in a room that was exactly like mine in size and appearance and was exactly the same price, but hers had a refrigerator and microwave where mine had drawers. There are disadvantages if you're driving: there's no place to park in front of the hotel to unload luggage, and even with the (tiny) hotel discount, parking in a nearby garage cost just under $60 for about thirty hours. I might stay there again if flying, but I doubt that I would do it again when driving. I was in Philly for business and needed a hotel for one night (at a reasonable price). Club Quarters was the least expensive given the star rating. I thought the location was great. Right across the street from the shops at Liberty Place and near lots of good restaurants. My room was small, but adequate for just one person. The bed seemed pretty comfortable and the room was clean (although it didn't have any tissues). Unfortunately, the walls were very thin. In the middle of the night I could hear my neighbor's television, and then hear him coughing. As a result, I did not sleep very well. Aside from that, I had a pleasant experience. I especially liked the water dispensers located near the elevator. Given the price and the location, I would stay there again, but only if I were travelling alone. I booked here for a conference as my work is a member. The rate was really good for the location. It's an easy walk from Suburban Station and pretty close to some good restaurants and shops. I arrived to find uninterested staff and a woman who kind of grunted and led me to the self check-in unit. I could have skipped her interaction completely if I'd known how they do things. In fact, I'm still wondering what the desk staff do as they didn't seem interested in helping guests. My room was on the 11th floor and small. It was basically a hallway that widened to a fit a bed. There was a desk wedged against the wall and the desk chair was the only place to sit besides the bed. The closet barely deserves to be called that as wasn't wide enough to accommodate my suitcase. Which was just as well as there was no bureau, only desk drawers, so I partly lived out of my suitcase spread out on the floor. There was no remote for the TV and two requests at the desk for a replacement went ignored. I arrived on a Friday and remembered that Club Quarters offers cheap rates on weekends to fill space. At about 8, i heard loud conversation starting in the room next to me and realized it was 2 women ho would be embarking on a night of clubbing. Lucky for me, the Rite-Aid on the corner was still open and I was able to buy earplugs. The neighbors returned around 4 AM and talked in the loud voices that only drunk people can use but the earplugs drowned most of it out. The same thing happened on Saturday night. I would also hear intermittent thumping noises that I eventually determined were coming from the guest washing machine on the 12th floor. So, small room, indifferent staff and noisy. On the plus side, the location is great, there's free wi-fi (although it was slow at times. They seem to share one DSL line for the entire hotel) and free water on every floor near the elevator. I'd stay here again on business but I'd look elsewhere if I was with my wife.

This is our second visit to Philadelphia in a couple of months (see my review for Windsor Suites) as we liked it so much the first time we wanted to come back for our Anniversary. I chose Club Quarters based on location and price. When I booked, I noticed that for a bit more money you can get a Superior room, so I booked it. I'm glad I did! Room was bigger than what the standard would be, had really high ceilings (almost 20'!) and a big beautiful window. Now, some amenities might not be to everyone's liking, but this is what we got. Queen Bed Table/Desk LCD TV Kitchenette with coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator, sink, cabinets with utensils and plates. Bathroom is small with a shower - no tub. Yes, as some reviewers noticed that the check-in process is different because you have kiosks and less "member services" staff, but it works. Another unique feature is that all room items are located in closets on selected floors so if you need linens, coffee, creamer, irons, etc. you can just go to the closets. Fitness room is average, but I saw a sign on the elevator that indicates you can request an eliptical machine or stairclimber for your room! In house restaurant is a bit more upscale (in pricing), but if you are a guest and have the bill charged to your room they'll give you a 15% discount. And, all of this is housed in an historic building on a nice street corner. I'm glad I chose the room I did at a price less than the major chains. But, if you are used to 4 or 5 star hotels, this might not be for you. As other reviews note, you get a small but clean room and bathroom. Location is great, price was OK (we got it through Priceline for about $100/night). BUT--if you are a business person who needs solid broadband internet to work while you're here, forget it. They have WiFi in the rooms, and the quality of the signal is fine, but the routers lack the capacity for anything but the lightest web browsing. VPN sometimes works--slowly--at odd hours. Also service, while friendly enough, is spotty. Had to call three times to get a new lightbulb, additional shampoo was not provided when the room was cleaned, etc. The gym is a joke--creaky cardio equipment, a rack of anemic dumbells 10lbs and below. This is at best a 2 1/2-star hotel, all things considered. Before you book at Club Quarters you should know they are located on top of a nightclub called Davios. This became relevant during my stay when Davios apparently used smoke as part of their nightclub act and set off the fire alarm at Club Quarters, a little before midnight. This was no ordinary fire alarm--for 1.5 hours, long after the fire truck left, an extremely loud automated voice blaring in every room telling hotel guests that there was an "incident" and to avoid the fire exits and elevators (i.e. don't move). Sleep was not an option, and most guests just milled around the hallways and lobby wondering what was going on. No effort to inform guests was made. We later found out that the alarms were still blaring because the Club Quarters staff could not figure out how to turn them off. After disturbing the night's sleep of their hotel guests, the management did not apologize. They did not refund the cost of the night's room. I will not be staying there again. This may have been a rare event, but still, I would beware of staying there if you are in desperate need of a good night's sleep. We recently spent two nights here, and while the hotel itself was fine, there's a bit of a problem. When I checked out my bill was $237 which I put on my credit card. I just checked my card account and there are currently two different transactions pending from CQ--one for $320 and one for $319. Also, the woman at the front desk was unfriendly and dismissive--as if she had other things to be doing that were much more important than waiting on guests. There are other hotels in the area, and we'll be staying elsewhere the next time we travel to Philly. My first stay at a Club Quarters, and it was a bad experience. The set-up is screwy: you walk into the building and are confronted with an elevator and stairs. For whatever reason, there is no lobby on the first floor; you have to go up to the second. The elevator is nightmarishly slow, so I usually took the steep stairs. Good for the heart and all that, but I'd hate to be handicapped in any way and stand there waiting interminably for the elevator. The room was loud and the floorplan bizarre, and one could make the case that's just the nature of real estate in big, old Northeastern cities, but I've been in enough hotels to know that is not the case. I've stayed in two Club Quarters, this and the one in Boston (see my review of same) and found them both terribly unpleasant. Based on these two experiences, I do not recommend the chain and will scrupulously avoid it myself in future. We were in Philly for the first time and a local college reserved the room for us, so we didn't have any choices. TINY is the key word! It was like a college dorm room with a tiny closet and another tiny closet with a toilet/sink/shower. No refrigerator or microwave. Coffeemaker was in the bathroom. Twin beds just like a college dorm. Everyone around us liked to let their doors slam shut at ant time of day or night. Paper-thin walls. We were on the 11th floor with a TINY window about 12" wide which didn't open (for our safety). If you squeezed yourself into the corner, you could see a small slice of Center City. Location is excellent, but every store is closed by 7 or 8 PM - even the mall. After a long trip, we went to bed early. Room Service woke us up...repeatly knocking on our door. Then we heard the radio conversation questioning the room number and discovery that they were knocking at the wrong room. To compound that, even though checkout was 12 Noon, on the day of departure, we were sleeping in, and the housekeeping staff woke us before 10. Ask for a pillow? You are sent to the 3rd, 8th or 12th floor to search for a closet. Customer service is non-existant and the front desk staff couldn't be more disinterested. Automatic check out? My receipt told me that I had to go to the front desk. Waited in line to hear them say "You are all set." The pro's: Clean, didn't smell, many points of interest close by, free WiFi. The con's: Tiny rooms, tiny beds, tiny window, tiny customer service. I think that Philly has better options than Club Quarters. Before we got to the Club Quarters I had lost (and had replaced) the credit card on which I'd originally made the reservation. This turn of events seemed totally beyond the ability of the check-in staff to deal with, and they were officious and rude to boot --- at one point making us sit down because "they didn't like our attitude". (I swear, all I'd done is said "do you have any idea how much longer this is going to be?"). If it hadn't been about 10 degrees outside, we would definately have left. Staff, which I had plenty of time to observe were young, untrained, and unprofessional (it was a Sunday night, and there was a definate sense that the grown-ups were gone and the children were acting up). When we got to the room, it was OK for the price --- AFTER we removed a glass of juice and some dirty towels left by previous occupants (and left by staff). There are plenty of other hotels in Philly, even at this price. My advice is keep looking. First, the good news. The lobby is lovely with nice amenities such as free computer access and free coffee, tea and ice water all day. On the third floor there is free chilled water and plastic bottles with caps to take it away with you. The staff is SUPER SUPER SUPER nice and truly helpful and totally delightful. The staff is amazing! The bad news. The rooms. OMG - they are truly awful. Okay, really, really really awful. They are clean, I'll give them that but small beyond belief. My husband and I in this tiny teeny room. A desk, no dresser - so we put our clothes in the desk drawers. The bed - supposed to be a queen - not! The mattress - soft and mushy - we woke up each day with aching backs. And the bathroom - wait for this - a stall shower (which is okay) but there is no shelf or bar in the shower. No place to put your soap, shampoo, wash cloth. We were 2 people and we had one wash cloth and 2 small towels (one of which was frayed). We will never ever ever stay there again. Great staff, lovely public areas but the rooms are beyond awful. Oh, and the restaurant - super expensive. I get the impression that the rooms in this hotel vary. A lot. In January '08, they were beginning renovations. So this meant many of the rooms were unavailable and the night I stayed there all the available rooms were booked. My room was less a room than a narrow closet. The bed fit into a little nook in the wall and other than that, the rest of the room was a long hallway. At first I couldn't find the bathroom because the door was so small. (The bathroom was small and run down.) The window was in another nook so that you couldn't see out the window unless you went over to the nook and squeezed yourself into it. This is rather hard to describe -- the room was surreal in its layout and size. If you've stayed at a Club Quarters before (I have in DC), you know that the ironing board and other standard amenity items are kept in utility closets on different floors. A bit of a pain. But here it was a real pain when I had to walk through a construction zone to find the closet, stepping on boards and pushing away plastic sheeting. Late at night, when no guests are staying on the floor with the construction, it was a little creepy. To top off the night, I could hear a couple in the room next door to me very much enjoying their night, with lots of screaming and giggling. At one point, MY bed was literally shaking against the wall. I asked to move rooms at midnight, and was told there were no other rooms. I asked the front desk to ask the couple to be quieter and they said there was nothing they could do about it. As if that wasn't enough, the mattress was poor and I woke up with a stiff back. Needless to say, I will not be staying there again.
