This Hotel was great. It was central, (opposite the railway station,) clean, the room was massive and the breakfast was gorgeous with lots of things to choose from. I think the hotel was recently refurbished, it was very comfortable and clean> The reception staff were also very friendly and were happy to help with all our quieries. The thing is that as this hotel in opposite the train station, always a noisy place, having an interior room was an advantage! Location: Despite being in the train station area (all kind of people going around all the time), the hotel was very well located because the old city center was in a walkable distance from the station! You could even took the tram, it’s not necessary at all unless you don’t want to walk! Recommendation: There is a Pizzeria just at the backstreet of the hotel entrance (the street which has the road bridge in the middle) which is wonderful for a romantic dinner! Otherwise, you can have a Kebab or so in the corner. Right opposite the train station, which has the usual problems associated with it: Loud and not really nice surroundings. No air conditioning, so it is all the louder when you keep the windows open. Rooms on the top floor (7) have a kind of balcony and overlook train and tram station. Room size was ok, bathroom was rather large and featured hair dryer and nice little shampoo portions which is not always the case in a 3-star hotel. Breakfast room recently refurbished, weekend breakfast until 11 am. Hotel "bar" just a few chairs near the reception, the bar proper obviously being refurbished. We did not visit sauna or solarium. Free coffee at reception. Minibar in room. TV guide and city guide in room. All in all much better than many other 3-star hotels I have visited. If you're not familiar with Accor Hotels, the Mercure is the middle-of-the-road brand within the group, just below the Novotel and just above the Ibis. We went to Bremen to visit the Freimarkt (carnival), which is well worth a visit by the way. We wanted to be close to the Messe where it was taking place, so we looked for a hotel nearby. The Mercure Columbus fitted the bill. As we were staying for 2 nights, we decided to treat ourselves, so we booked a suite. It was not worth the extra money we paid. All you get with a Mercure is a slightly larger room than at an Ibis. The suite did have two rooms plus a separate entry hallway and an en-suite bathroom, but it was let down by radiators that were lukewarm at best, very tired furnishings, and light switches that didn't turn any lights on. The only illumination in our living room was a standard lamp. There was a desk lamp on the desk but nowhere to plug it in. Accor Hotels like to charge for breakfast (€15 per person in this Mercure) which is overpriced. Directly beneath the hotel are 3 steh-cafes (bakeries), across the tram tracks is the station which is full of food options. For €15 you can feed a family of four in the station. However, on the plus side, the reception staff were excellent and professional and our room was on the 5th floor on a corner that overlooked the main railway station from one side and the tram stops on the other and we didn't hear a thing, so the soundproofing was very good. | ||||
