Very average hotel but Great location. | Read all reviews
Stayed at the hotel for two nights. Really I don't see this as being a 4 star hotel at all much more a three. We didn't want much from the hotel other than a bed to sleep on really. However, we were put into a room that didn't back onto anything and appeared very glum and dingy. The whole room was very out-dated and worn. The quilt and pillows were wafer thin and the bed springs knackered. There was no information inside the hotel room about what the restaurant menu was or about breakfast etc - not that this mattered to us as we were looking to eat out anyway. Bathroom was the best bit of the room but still average. The receptionists were ok but not great, there was no smiling involved but, again were efficient enough. On the plus side this hotel was cheaply priced and is in a great location. Within 1 whole day you can literally see all the historic sites . The hotel is down a less busy road but is 1min walk from the hussle and bussle - which I would say is perfect We managed a drink at the bar on arrival which was very nice and was in contrast to the room. There is a great Aussie restaurant in the Sony centre and also a cafe on the TV tower that revolves that is worth a visit. The Rheistag and Brandeburg gate are a 10 min walk from the hotel.

Visited for two nights on a "Stag night" and had a great time. The hotel is an ideal location as described by the many advisors who've already posted. The hotel has the ability to cater for all types of guests, and the central location makes it easy to get around this City. The tube network is excellent, but so to is the taxi service. Although there for a Lads weekend I would not hesitate in staying here with my young family, or for a weekend getaway with the wife :) Stayed here for four nights. Very central location, and underground station a stones throw away. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Our room....amazing! We were on the cheaper end of the spectrum and couldn't believe our eyes when we walked in- a top floor room with huge windows all along one wall- amazing views of the city. Lovely spacious room and very clean. Had dinner twice- very nice. Breakfast also very good! A really great hotel, would definately stay here again. I really loved this hotel. It had a brilliant location near to Checkpoint Charlie. The room was great, and the staff friendly and helpful. The bar was absolutely fantastic, with cocktails and deeply sophisticated surroundings, and it was good value too! The hotel's restaurant was very quiet, but it offered brilliant sophisticated food at reasonable prices. Even if I didn't stay in the hotel I'd make a trip to the restaurant next time I'm in Berlin! You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay at the Angleterre. The Angleterre is conveniently located in the centre of Berlin (a block or two from Checkpoint Charlie). Pretty much everything you'll want to see is within walking distance, or the U-Bahn/S-Bahn network can take you there (the Kochstrasse station is right by the hotel). The room was of a good size, clean and tidy, with good storage space etc. We didn't eat or drink in the hotel, but the menus looked to be good value, especially the room service sandwich menu. The staff that we spoke to were helpful and efficient. Being a chippy Scot, one small issueI had was the inclusion of an "Edinburgh" room in the hotel "Angleterre", but apart from that, this was an excellent hotel. Great value for money. We went for a stag weekend and were really impressed with the quality of the hotel and the location. Suitable for any occassion. We spent three nights at the Hotel Angleterre; our arrival was greatly delayed by a late arriving aircraft. despite the late hour the staff were charming and efficient and this set the tone for the remainder of our stay. The room was large and very comfortable with an immaculate bathroom. the only item that we would have welcomed would have been tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast was generous and well presented. The staff were efficient, charming and always happy to help. The position of the hotel in Frederich Strasse made movement about the city very easy being close to the U Bahn and the busses and not far from the S bahn. This visit was for us a trip down memory lane as we had both lived in berlin previously, my wife as a young girl and me as a young officer when the wall was erected. I have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel Angleterre to anyone. We arrived after 11pm following a delayed flight and found the hotel very easily - literally across the street from the Kochstrasse U-bahn station. The reception staff were very friendly and professional, happily letting us check in with basic German and throwing in helpful bits of English where needed. The room was brilliant - quite typical 4* to be honest. Our "Double Room" did consist of two single beds pushed together with single bedding to match, however the free bags of haribo left on the pillows began to make up for that! The maid service was so unobtrusive that we never saw them despite them clearly having been in every day! The location is relatively central - excellent for Checkpoint Charlie, the Wall Museum, Jewish Museum etc. The Reichstag building and Gendarmenmakt are both walkable if 15 - 20 minutes isn't too far for you. The u-bahn is very easily accessible anyway (there's a lift for wheelchair users at Kochstrasse too). We didn't use the hotel bar or restaurant, as (similar to what other reviewers have said) there are a wealth of these all around the local area and the rest of Berlin. The red fronted cafe directly over the road to the left is perfect for breakfast, and there's a Starbuck's on the corner in the other direction if that's more your thing. Very nice and very inexpensive restaurants - "Appetito Italiano" - turn right after Checkpoint Charlie as a previous reviewer noted (thanks for that!), or a little further away walking is "Cafe Mohring" on Charlottenstrasse at the Gendarmenmarkt. The hotel staff were friendly throughout our stay; we were greeted every time we were passed in the corridors and lifts. When we asked about where to buy stamps for postcards the receptionist charged us for stamps and took our postcards to post himself. As we had a very late flight home after checking out, they also stored our bags for us until we were ready to collect them in the evening. Overall, an excellent hotel in a beautiful city, neither of which would I hesistate to return to! We had a very comfortable stay in this excellent centrally located hotel, right by the former Checkpoint Charlie. A metro station is located directly outside the hotel making all sights easily accessible. We found a great deal on Expedia for a Suite for £60 per night whch was fantasic value. If you're looking for a great priced, top quality hotel in the heart of Berlin city, then this is the place for you. Located just a few doors from landmark Checkpoint & literally across the road from a U-bahn stop, the hotel was also within very easy walking distance from many other key locations such as the remains of the Berlin wall, Alexander Place, etc. etc. I can't say anything to fault my stay here. Room service was excellent, room itself spotless, fully stocked mini-bar, lovely restaurant. I had the flu whilst I was there & staff even brough me a pot of hot water one night to add to my hot lemon cold medicine! Although it charges typical tourist-rate prices, this hotel is far far superior to your typical tourist hotel. While in Amsterdam we decided to go to Berlin for a week. Online the Angleterre was cheap and looked really good. We paid 69 Euros for a single room (we each got a room). Our only hesitation was that it wasn't in the neighbourhood that we wanted and seemed that it was in a very commercial part of Berlin. The cab ride was quick enough. The hotel lobby was simple but nice with wood accents. The staff was a bit reserved but friendly enough. The rooms were really excellent. Single rooms had two single beds side by side. The room is all wood and the bathroom is slate floors that are heated. It is all new with very clean appliances. There was also a wall of sliding doors to store your luggage with a safe, again all in wood. I felt in the lap of luxury. A friend we met who was travelling as well came over for a drink and couldn't believe how nice the place was and the deal we had. We like that kind of reassurance ;) About the area: The subway is right across the street and it is very efficient. We loved the subway in Berlin and wished it were like that back here in Chicago and Toronto. Stuff like time display showing the time for all in-coming trains, motion censored escalators, no huge power sucking lcd screens, the fact that you can drink on the train and they sell beer and wine right in the station, the list goes on and on (I digress) The point is that you can get around until about 12:30 a.m using the subway, and later on the weekend (I believe 2, but maybe later) And there is also an all night street car that brings you close to the hotel, but I dont remember much from that night so no details. The food in the area is bad, do not go to the touristy cafeteria down the street. The mexican place was good and the restaurant hotel is good (but expensive). Anyway, go to Berlin and enjoy and stay at this hotel cause it's a deal. stayed this week for three nights found the hotel a great base to see berlin, the hotel was very clean, very warm, and really nice to return to in the evening i found the staff great they will not be all over you but if you need help on locations maps not a problem we had one meal in the hotel and it was well above standard a good way to describe the hotel is location /clean /warm/ and staff not in your face which can some times be great, i have no problem walking miles but if you cant the metro is right outside the hotel which will carry you anywhere in berlin at a very reasonable price alan 23rd October 2007. We stayed here for three nights. The hotel was fantastic. The staff were very polite and helpful. The breakfast was of a high quality and quantity. The hotel is in a perfect location for sight-seeing as the metro station is only a few yards away and is fast and efficient and clean. The best way to explore the city is on foot as many attractions can be reached without having to walk miles. The city is ideal for anyone with mobility problems as it is all flat. We would recommend seeing the Reichstag ( government building ) which is free to enter. Take the lift up to the dome and walk up the dome were you will see fantastic views of the city. The architecture in the city is superb, lots to see and do. The people in the city were extremely helpful and polite. One thing to bear in mind is the weather at this time of the year is very cold so remember to pack your winter clothes. Go on give berlin a try. We think you will enjoy it. ( family from St Helens Merseyside ) My mum and myself have just returned from three day short break at the Angleterre Hotel. Hotel was excellent. Good location within walking distance of main train station to airport. Right next to check point charlie and close to many other tourist sights. Sightseeing bus also stops next to check point charlie, great way of seeing the city. Hotel room was clean and smart slightly small but great value for what we paid. Breakfast could not be faulted, fresh salmon, meats etc. All staff very friendly. Hotel bar prices much the same as other hotel bar prices. Lots of resturants close by. Great little Itallian called Lungomare, close to hotel on Krausenstr, food great and reasonable price. Berlin itself very intresting and people very nice. Would return to this hotel without hesitation. Have just got back from two nights in Berlin. I have to say that the Angleterre is one of the most comfortable hotels I have stayed in for a very long time. We had a suite on the 4th floor (only £100 per night) and it was easily worthy of a 4-star rating. Having also spend two nights in the Lake District in the same week, the value for money in Berlin hotels puts some offers in the UK to shame. I would recommend this hotel to anyone (indeed a colleague who stayed there at the same time was of the same opinion). Nice hotel and good location, right by the U-Bahn which can take you to any of the clubs, cheap and luxurious and overall a nice place Superb hotel, well situated for Checkpoint Charlie and shops in Freidrichstrasse. We walked to Kurfurstendamme for designer shops; also to the Reichstag, Bundestag. Just fifty yards way was the U - an efficient clean German Underground, at Kochstrasse. The land is flat and easy to walk, very interesting history of the 2nd World War and the events thereafter, The erection of the Berlin Wall and its eventual partial destruction. The hotel was well staffed, efficiently smiling. Everything we were supplied with worked well. Our favourite meeting place was the Cocktail Bar at Happy Hour! What a bar-man, you name it - he could mix it - White Lady, Tequila Sunrise, Marguarita Gimlet,Kyperenia. Lovely restaurant, romantically lit, well presented food, hot and interesting - good wine list. Super service. Rooms warm on one cold night. I would definitely make this my first choice for another three days in Berlin. Underground parking was secure and useful. Val a wonderful hotel, very close to checkpoint charly. I also recommend the hotel bar!!!! nice service, nice cocktails, nice style... I will come back next time! Steve Excellent hotel, in a great location, in Berlin. We were slightly worried when we first got there as the front of the building looked really old, however the hotel is extremely modern. The rooms are very comfortable. Breakfast is extremely generous and varied. It is within a walking distance from checkpoint Charlie, the museum island and many other touristic destinations. For other attractions, you need to take a subway, but the closest stop is almost in front of the hotel. The staff is very professional. We got a great deal online (90 euros, breakfast included) and we would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Berlin. We've just returned (May 2007) from Berlin staying at the Angleterre and wouldn't even bother looking up another hotel in future. The hotel is a one-minute walk from a U-bahn station, 5 from Checkpoint Charlie, 15 from the Brandenburg gate and the amazing shopping at Friedrichstasse, and 20 from the Unter den Linden in the heart of former East Berlin. The staff are very helpful and polite. The rooms are fairly large, clean, comfortable and quiet. Breakfast is served till 10.30 and is superb. The hotel is, not only excellent value for money, it has all that a tourist or businessman needs. I was part of a large group (40 of us) for a meeting and some of us stayed on through the weekend with partners. All, without exception, were thoroughly delighted with the hotel. The layout is a little strange- you feel you've missed the lifts as they're right at the back of the building past the meeting rooms but that's the only "negative" comment to make. You can also purchase "Welcomecards"- travelcards (very inexpenxive) with money off coupons for main attrtactions from reception and staff are happy to advise on restaurants- there's an enormous choice of excellent choice restaurants within a 5-minute train/15 minute walk of hotel. Just got back from celebrating my 50th in Berlin on 28th April 2007! Must say the Hotel Angleterre was totally brilliant: the staff were very helpful and attentive, the breakfasts are a gastronomic feast and the location is near perfect being just metres from a U-bahn station and Checkpoint Charlie!! True the rooms are small...if you are a football team, but if you are an ordinary couple they are excellent!! And those reviewers who give it zilch must have had 12* accomodation on Pluto!! I would recomment this hotel to anyone wanting a short stay in Berlin. GE Chester UK We stayed here in February and would recommend the hotel to others. We caught the train from the airport and found the hotel with no problems. We arrived at about 10 in the morning but were able to leave our bags with the very helpful staff before we set off to explore the city. It was just a short walk to Checkpoint Charlie and also a remaining section of the Berlin Wall. When we returned after a full day of sightseeing and having dinner we were greeted by a very friendly staff member. Upon checking in we were warned that the restaurant had been hired out and they were sorry for any inconvenience from the noise that may occur. Luckily we didnt experience any problems and had a very peaceful night. Our room was lovely...very comfortable, clean and newly renovated. The only complaint I would have about the room was the shower and how it tended to fluctuate from warm to very hot for a few seconds every couple of minutes. In the morning we enjoyed a great breakfast in the hotels restaurant. The staff were not the slightest bit friendly but the food was fresh and plentiful. Great hotel in an excellent location for sight seeing. About 80m to the nearest underground station of Check point Charlie (Kochst on the purple U6 underground) We came from Tegel airport and it really is VERY easy with the public transport system. At the airport buy a City Tour Card (1 to 3 days) this gives you unlimited travel on buses, trams the U & S bahn as well as extra discounts into tourist attractions. We got a 3 day one for our visit for zones A-C around E22. From the airport to the hotel you only need zones A - B but for the sake of E2 we opted for all zones. Take the 128 bus to the U6 station of Kurt- Schumacher-Platz , and then the underground staight to CPCharlie (heading towards Alt-Mariendorf direction) Make sure you validate your ticket the first time you use it - they have the little machine on the bus that you frank it in. You dont need to do it again. The hotel we found to be excellent with the all staff we came into contact with helpful and polite. The room was modern and clean. The beds were comforable and the bathroom was lovely. We were on the 6th floor and it was quiet the 3 nights we were there. In the reception there is a computer and printer available free, so we were able to check in the day before for our flight home and print off our boarding cards, saving us another hour wait at the airport. The total travel time from hotel to airport was 40 mins but i would allow 50 to be on the safe side. The service in the bar (Speakers Corner) was friendly and its a relaxing place for a night cap. We only ate breakfast in the restaurant which was plentiful but at E15 we thought a bit pricey. Right opp the hotel is a nice coffee house with lovely cakes and sandwiches for half the price. One last recomendation - a lovely Italien restaurant called Parlamento on Bergmannstrasse 3. 2 stops on the U6 to Mehringdamm and a short walk down the main road 3rd road on the left. The food was delicious, service freindly & fun and you can even watch them cook your meal. The meal was extremely good value for money and if i ever go back to Berlin I will be making a bee line there again along with the hotel Angleterre Stayed here 1 night prior to a Hearing at the European Patent Office. Taxi form Schonelfeld Airport is 35euros and takes 25mins. Arrived late: the hotel bar and restaurant (Speakers Corner) serve food until 11pm but there are some restaurants up the street near Checkpoint Charlie. Rooms are very clean modern and comfortable. I upgraded to a bigger room when I got there for 10euros. The broadband for 24hrs costs 15eur which is a bit expensive. The nice buffet breakfast was15eur. It's in a quiet neighbourhood and there seemed to be free on street parking if you rent a car. Alexander Platz, the Bradenburg Gate and Potzdamer Pl are all 20 mins walk. You can pick up a hop on/off bus tour at Checkpoint Charlie, which a good wat to see the city 15eur. Would definately stay there again. We have just returned from a 4 night weekend stay at the Angleterre which apart from the names of the seminar rooms is not at all English. We had a comfort room which was large, airy and very clean. The bathroom was excellent and there were clean towels everyday and the maid service was very good. All the staff were very helpful. The hotel is about 200 yards from Checkpoint Charlie and 100 paces (yes it's sad I know but I did pace it out) from the nearest U bahn station. The bar is a nice place for a nightcap. We walked a lot as it's a great city for getting around on foot but the U + S bahns, buses etc were cheap and easy to use. One minor point - we had a late flight and left our bags with reception thinking they would be kept in a closed room but they were left at the side of reception in the open. Just something to be wary of if you do the same. Thoroughly recommended. We spent three pleasant nights at the Angleterre. The hotel is about a block or two from the old Checkpoint Charlie. It is a fairly long walk to "Unter den Linden"; but my wife and I like to walk and had no problem covering this distance at least three times. The hotel appears to reside in a building that actually survived WWII, but has been renovated such that it looks nice on the outside and is clean and modern on the inside. The room was about the size of an average U.S. hotel room, and was clean. The bathroom was modern and looked brand new. The service at the front desk was friendly and helpful. We would not hesitate to book our next Berlin stay in this hotel. I booked 3 rooms for a group of friends who were spending the weekend in Berlin, so we wanted to get a decent, central hotel, but at a reasonable price. I made initial checks with Tripadvisor then phoned Hotels.com to make the booking. During the phonecall, the total price of my booking dropped by over 100 euros, making it cost only £60 per person for 2 nights. This was excellent value given the location and standard of the hotel. It is very close to Checkpoint Charlie and is on one of the main streets in Berlin. The rooms were very clean and everything was as you would expect. The facade of the hotel is old and attractive, but the main section inside feels more like a business hotel, with the rooms conjuring up a feel of a classic capital city mid-range Hilton or Marriot. There is another section of the building to the left of reception which is decorated in a much older and more interesting style, with a grand staircase leading upstairs. We had a room in this part of the hotel for the 2nd night and it was far bigger (we needed an extra bed, so it had to be), with high ceilings and far more character. The bathrooms were identical in all rooms. There is a lovely Turkish coffee shop opposite the hotel that sells delicious cakes and wonderful lattes. The direct area that you are in boarders on one of the less safe parts of Berlin, so keep to main streets or get taxis if walking here late at night. The hotel is nice, that being said the lobby is a bit lacking. I am used to the larger American lobbys but the lobby here is nice and clean with a helpful staff. I will break this review down into three sections, location, price and hotel. Location: The location is very good however it is about 2 blocks away from everything, a bit quite and darker. This isnt to say its unsafe, I drank 1 euro beers and ate brats at the food cart on the corner and it was so fun. They were very nice to americans and had great beer and food for cheap. Being from a city that doesnt have food carts i was a bit hesitant but the food wa cooked and rpepared safely. Price: The suite is the best deal, I paid only 190 US Dollars per night, it was up to 3-700 when I checked in. It must be at least 800 sq feet with a reading room with seperate tv etc. Being on the second floor the view well it isnt good, request the 4th floor suite, at least it wont be loud. The suite itself is very nice with comfortable chairs, free internet ,a nice tv/reading area and a great bathroom. The bathroom is great new tile new appliances and floor to celing marble. Hotel: The overall hotel is a bit like a maze, I couldnt imagine the 0 floor rooms or non view or suite rooms would be that great. It seemed like a pain to find other rooms ( i walked each floor). I would reccomend a higher floor or a suite, dont accept floor one. Floor one for suites is really floor two but for normal rooms it is floor 0 and i assume a terrible terrible view. I would reccomend this hotel, its very good and for the price cant be beat. Have just come back from Berlin and stayed at the Angleterre. Caught a bus from the airport then a metro straight to the hotel. Could'nt have been easier or cheaper - 2 euros each. Metro is a few metres from the hotel. Rooms a reasonable size, very clean and had a recentley been decorated. Breakfast was 15 euros and was ok but the hot food wasn't good, kept on running out and not very quickly being replaced. We then decided to eat in a coffee and pastry shop opposite the hotel. They did croisants pastries rolls etc. Much better value. Hotel staff were ok, gave us the info we needed but not many smiles. Typical germans!!!!! All in all would definetely recommend it. We have just returned from a fabulous weekend in Berlin staying at the Angleterre. It was easy to find - a taxi from Schonefeld airport cost 33euros but it was only a 45min train ride (airport to frederichstrasse station and then U bahn to Kochstrasse which was over the road). We arrived late at night (10.30) and were worried we wouldn't be able to eat anywhere. If you walk towards checkpoint charlie and take the 2nd street right, there is a lovely italian restaurant which was open late and did MASSIVE pizzas for 5euros each (our meal for 2 cost us 20euros). Service was fab and food was lush! On the saturday we found it easy to get around - Frederichstrasse is 5mins on the U bahn from Kochstrasse and it's a main station. We got off at Tiergarten and walked down to Brandenburg gate (where i was proposed to) passing the siesegaule monument. from there, the holocaust memorial and reichstag are a 2min walk - and there is a lovely beirgarten near the memorial which does lovely currywurst and chips for 5euros. It's a 15/20minute walk from the gate to Alexanderplatz where you can see the television town and you pass some lovely old buildings - the Berliner Dom is also a must!! (5euros for entry and it was breath taking - although i would question the "270 steps" up to the gallery of the catherdral dome, it felt like 800 steps!) From Alexanderplatz, the U bahn will take you straight back to Kochstrasse. On the saturday night, we had a short walk towards checkpoint charlie for a meal in "bradaros" steakhouse. The steak was superb and the service was brilliant. 40euros for a 2 course meal with drinks. On the sunday we took room service breakfast - we only ordered for one person and this was plenty for the both of us. The scrambled egg looks a bit odd though!! and it was expensive (there is a bakery over the road from the hotel doing lovely croissants and fresh juice which is open 7 days a week). when we checked out, we were offered a free late check out of 2pm if we needed it but 12o clock was fine for us. They also have a luggage room for people, like us, who are flying home late where you can leave your bags free of charge (it's all secure and they use a ticketing system). The had some spare time to visit the zoo which we were going to miss out but it was BRILLIANT! The bad points - the breakfast was expensive but the bakery over the road made up for it. The "still" water in the minibar was slightly fizzy for "wellness" which we didn't find out until we opened it - luckily reception took the 6euros off of our bill. The male staff in reception were more helpful than the female staff! The major negative for us was that we had booked a comfort double room and our king size bed was 2 single beds pushed together - with 2 single bed covers (not ideal when you are celebrating your anniversary and engagement). The rooms were clean, it's ideally located and the bed was very comfortable (if not a little lonely) Hotel Angleterre was a good base for a winter sightseeing tour. The location is excellent for all the main tourist attractions - the hotel is next door to checkpoint charlie. The jewish museum, topography of terror, under den linden, the reichstag, alex platz, holocaust memorial, brandenburg gate, potsdamer platz, are all within half an hours walk. If you're not a walker there's a underground station next to the hotel and the underground system was fast and efficient. One thing that was missing nearby was a bit of nightlife. It's a business and retail area and while there are a few decent restaurants nearby, you have to travel further afield to find busy pubs and clubs. Having said that the underground and bus system made this easy. We didn't eat in the restaurant at the hotel. There are number of places nearby that do a cheap and delicious breakfast if you're on bed only basis like we were. The hotel bar was really comfortable and welcoming although the cocktails were a bit inexpert! The rooms are very comfortable, quiet and cosy. They were very clean and the maid service was good and unobtrusive. We booked through travelocity, who had good rates. The hotel was advertised as a four-star, but when we arrived we discovered the rooms have different ratings and our comfort double was actually a three-star room. (There are lower starred rooms in the hotel) The comfort double was quite small but very recently decorated and quite plush. I conclusion, this hotel is maybe a bit big impersonal and not in the best location if you're after the city's nightlife. However, it is in a brilliant location for tourists and is a really comfortable retreat after a long day's sightseeing. We stayed at the Angleterre for four nights and found it to be an excellent hotel. A great bar "The Commonwealth" with friendly staff and great food. The hotel was spotless and the staff at reception friendly. Although ,unfortunatley we had need of a doctor and the receptionist on duty was unaware that there was one in the street directly opposite the hotel, we got that bit of info from the chemist next door (very, very helpful). But besides that everything was excellent, the breakfast buffet is the best I have ever seen and the hotel is close to a lot of the main tourist sites, five minute walk to Checkpoint Charlie on the same street. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone going to Berlin. As the Alfa Hotel was overbooked, they booked me a room at the Angleterre Hotel. As I had a good rate (same rate as at Alfa Hotel, which is a less good hotel), it was a nice stay at the Angleterre. Spacious rooms and nice staff. Good breakfast. Location, close to Checkpoint Charlie, is great. Great location right beside metro and Checkpoint Charlie. The hotel was perfect for a weekend break in Berlin and everything was exactly as you would expect. And maybe because it was January, it was great value too. Stayed at the Angleterre the weekend returning home 15/01/2007. Must say I really enjoyed it. The staff were very friendly, the rooms were very clean, the bathroom was perfect, the hotel bar was very good, and even the restaurant was very good. The hotel is just a few meters up from the old check point charlie crossing, and underground station, so easy to find. We flew from easyjet Berlin shoenfeld airport, and caught a taxi, who when we mentioned the road Friedreichstrasser (a very long road) knew the hotel from the check point charlie focus point, worth remembering (thank you to a previous reviewer for the tip), the taxi fare incedently for two people was 22 euro. Berlin is quite a sprawling city thus the hotel location is fine, as if you stayed anywhere you would probabily want to go see check point charlie in any event. The price of the hotel for three nights was 241 euro's, which I thought was exceptional value. The only critical comment on the hotel, and all restaurants visited was the smokers. Ok, I dont smoke, so I find it revolting to be in a non segregrated enviroment for smokers, well.... all Berlin seems to be full of smokers, ash trays everywhere, in the hotel reception, bar, all city eateries and after EVERY meal we smelt like a bolivian cigarette convention member, horrible, but you cant aviod it.... Location is excellent with the U ban right on the door, very easy to get to from Shonefeld airport. I had booked through Hotels.com and booked an economy room, when we got there we were offered a suite for an additional €20 extra per night. We'd a look at the room and decided against- spend the money on a nice meal instead. Considering it was a suite there was nothing 'suite like' about it. It looked excactly like the economy room but just had an extra room with chairs in it and we felt we would't use. We didn't opt for the breakfasts there which are €15 each - this is very expensive especially considering across the road there are numerous little restaurants offering very nice breakfasts for half the price. Overall rooms are VERY CLEAN, our room was right at the top - 6th floor, it was extremely quiet - not once in the 4 days we were there did we hear others. Maid service was excellent- gave clean towels everyday. Reception staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel rates themselves as a 4 star which I would not say! Its the little things like no tea making facility in the room and water was overpriced in the mini-bar etc. One evening we opted for one of the movies they offer as there was limited english speaking channels (1 had no sound) Video cost €15 Would I stay there again- probably not (personal choice). Don't get me wrong- the hotel really is fine and you should have no problems - I can't really fault Hotel Angleterre in specifc. its okay. If you are just looking for a base then its perfectly fine. Poorly decorated. Average hotel, ok for a few days. Nothing much to write about.... My partner and I visited Berlin for Valentines day and booked a 'delux' double at the Angleterre as a treat for our stay. Firstly on arrival we were greeted by a less than cheery receptionist who seemed to resent our poor attempt in German. He proceeded to book us in to our room on the eighth floor, with no help with luggage etc. On arrival in the room it was far from 'deluxe'. We were greeted with a modern room, slanted roof windows (which curtains did not fully cover) and a 3 single beds, two of which had been put together to form a 'double'. The 'city view' was nothing more than over looking some slightly dingy buildings nearby. We were also given several strange looks coming in and out of the hotel, presumably because we're a young (21) couple and their primary clientele consists of middle aged couples/families and businessmen, as such we were put off from trying the restaurant or bar, both of which appeared over priced for their menus. The good points of the hotel were that it was within comfortable walking distance of all the main sights and 2 seconds from a metro station giving you access to the rest of berlin. I'm sure plenty of people have had good experiences here - but as i've said, owing to our age i think they decided to take the mick just a little... This hotel is pretty central to most things in Germany, It's just down the road from Checkpoint Charlie and there is a train station right outside. The rooms are nice and the breakfast was above aveerage for Europe. The only thing was that they had a private function on New Year and you couldn,t even get a drink at the bar. Also the noise in the early hours was very loud, so if you're a light sleeper ask for a room on a high floor. All in all it was good value for money but I'd rather stay at the Mercure Checkpoint Charlie which we stayed in last year. I couldn't fault this hotel at all. Central with excellent connections and within walking distance of many tourist sites. Most staff are friendly and helpful, some are rude and cold. Overall you're just another punter was the feeling we got. It's a bit of a rambling place with many corridors, mezanines, stairs, fire doors and subterranean passages. (For example, even reception directs you to the bar via an external route as the internal one is so complicated.) Under no circumstances accept a room below the third floor and avoid those facing the inner courtyard above the extremely noisy and very late night frequently used function centre. This is the biggest drawback to this hotel. There are choke points between 0830 and 0930 at breakfast and you might find yourself in the "overspill room" which, speaking frankly, is like a work's canteen. The bar is expensive and although well appointed, small. It keeps very peculiar (short )hours. Berlin has a definite whiff of "fleece the tourist" creeping in. The general picture however, is that there are many pleasant very reasonably priced events and facilities but most will be discovered by serendipity. The Angleterre is OK but if we go again we shall get nearer the Ku'dam where things are a bit more modern and the architecture and surrounds are a lot more vibrant. On the whole the true Berliners are very polite, pretty friendly and helpful. But, as with the hotel, stick to your principles if you feel you're not being treated fairly. I booked this hotel through last minute.com one of their "top secret" hotel bookings. I requested a non smoking room as i know in general europeans still smoke heavily!! I then reiterated this in their special requests box. You can guess what happened on arrival at 2230hrs we were told that they had no more non smoking rooms as all the guests who had arrived on that day had requested non smoking rooms. It would seem they only have a few rooms allocated to non smokers. The upshot was that we had to pay an extra 45 euros to upgrade. There was no other option. The hotel itself was clean and the bathroom was spacious with a great shower. We had what i would class as a family room there was a double bed (two beds joined together) and another single bed. (We had initially paid extra for a deluxe room with last minute). We did not do breakfast as per the other threads but we were eating later on in the evening so didn't feel up to breakfast first thing preferred a longer stay in bed! The location is not ideal if you want to be in the thick of it however there is a Ubhan station two minutes away and in 5 minutes you can be in the centre of berlin. There is also a little newsagents next to the hotel that sells day tickets. You can also buy them on the train platform itself which has an english option to guide you through. Whilst we were there on at least three occasions there were plain clothes ticket inspectors on the trains so make should you stamp your ticket on the little machines that are next to the ticket machine. You only need to stamp it once. The majority of Berliners speak English but as everywhere it always pays to try and speak the lingo and you find they are more responsive to you. This hotel is in a great location for site seeing - just down from Checkpoint Charlie. We found the staff friendly and helpful and the rooms were modern and comfortable, if a bit small and lacking some of the facilities you might expect in a 4 star hotel. The buffet breakfast is fantastic and includes everything from cereals and toast to smoked salmon and cooked breakfast. However, breakfast does cost 15 euros each if it's not included in your room rate. Unfortunately, the hotel has a well used function room and there were parties at the hotel 3 out of the 4 nights we stayed. This would have been fine if they'd finished at midnight but they tended to go on until 3am. We complained after 2 nights and we were immediately upgraded to a better room on a higher floor and on a quieter side of the hotel, however, we were already shattered by that point. One of the parties had such tight security that we weren't even allowed to use the public areas in the lobby, including the lift - we had to use a service lift. It did seem that holding functions is the hotel's main priority and the comfort of its guests comes second. We picked the Angleterre because of its location being very near a U-Bahn stop and other tourist sites. We got a great deal on Expedia, approx 80 US dollars per night. For the price it really worked out great, the hotel was near public transportation, shopping, and other sites. The room was very clean too. We ordered room service one night, I'd say for what we paid it was not worth it. We also ordered breakfast the following morning, it was so late we sent it back, but the front desk made sure it was not charged to our room, but I do agree with the comment about the staff never smiling, it was a bit odd. I don't have any reason not to stay at the Angleterre again, but I'd make sure to get a decent price. Booked this hotel after reading several reviews on TA. They didn't have the rooms we had booked through an agent but they showed us their confirmation with the agent and the wrong rooms had been requested - not the fault of the hotel. The rooms we had were standard ones and they were fine. Clean and plently of hanging/storage space. Not much in the way of bathroom toiletries though. The breakfast was good - large range of items to select from - although I agree with a previous review that they weren't particularly friendly. There was nothing wrong with the curtains as remarked by a previous reviewer. Yes the curtains were too small for the windows but behind the curtain was a black out sheet you just needed to pull across - no light to wake you up too early! The location was excellent for sightseeing. Many sights were accessible on foot. Few hundred yards from checkpoint Charlie. Also very close to a u-bahn station - 50 yds so very easy to get around to places further afield or to get back easily to the hotel after a long day of sightseeing.

Hotel was nice and clean, didn't have any problems with noisy parties or anything like that (mentioned in previous reviews). In one of the reviews I had read someone mentioned fake minibar charges so I was paying a little more attention to what was in the room and realised that things were added to my room on my second day. (bottle of wine and some crisps from what I could tell) which by itself is no worries at all since the maid might have forgotten. HOWEVER upon checkout I was presented with a 6 item bill for a total of 24EUR which I refused to pay. Interestingly enough the receptionist was very quick at cancelling the bill and making me sign that I hadn't taken anything which makes me believe that this wasn't the first time that happened. The hotel is very nice and central but I don't expect 4 star hotel staff to try and rip me off. BE CAREFUL and REFUSE to pay for stuff that you haven't taken. We stayed at the Angleterre Hotel Berlin in September, the location was good. I felt the hotel was a bit pricey on some of its services. It seemed anything other than the bed was extra. In this day and age I consider the internet to be available either free of charge or at a reasonable rate. Their rate was 3 euro an hour despite advertising it in their room directory for 3 euros for 3 hours which I thought was reasonable, but they said that was not this hotel but others in the chain. There was only 3 English speaking channels on the TV all news with 1 having no sound. Ant other movie or sport channels were pay for view. Once again the hotel was well located right near check point Charlie, but don't expect any little extras from this hotel. If I return to Berlin I think I would look elsewhere but in the same area. I stayed here last week for ITB. I picked it for few reasons, one being the reviews here on TA. I called up about 4 days in advance to make sure they had my internet booking, i have had experiences in the past. They did, and i asked to confirm after booking a deluxe room if i could have a double bed, non smoking and quiet. This was confirmed. On arrival ( you see where i'm going here ) my room was a twin, right next to an elevator. I called down immediately, and boy what a comical conversation. Firstly i was total they had no double beds in the hotel, at all!! Then they hada few but, my room had a zip and link bed. Later to find out it wasn't. Manager said i could get a large sheet to cover both the beds. Not ideal. In someones wisdom the curtains were not large enough to cover the window, so every morning was woken up through a half drawn window. Staff were so not interested. I stayed for 5 nights in total and after a couple of days, i decided to let it go and try and enjoy the city and hotel. But my god, is it difficult to get a smile or even hello out of anyone in the hotel. Afteranother couple of days i gave up on that as well. I only ate in the bar one eveing, it was fine. Disappointing, since the website is appealing, the building is great from the outside, the entrance hall is enormous & the staff ok - I expected the room to be cosy, "gemütlich", typical berliner - instead, it was only just a bit better than many 2-stars in terms of size & much worse than many in terms of facilities (no extra pillows, no coffeemaker, soap dispenser broken, oldie curtains, etc, etc). I'm surprised by what I've read here about only recently being a hotel - the general impression was of an old hotel needing renovation. This hotel needs to decide if its for travellers or locals wanting a party. I am writing this while wide awake due to a massive birthday party being held immediately below my room, though I think the noise would be making its way throughout the hotel. When I asked reception if I could move they said the hotel was booked out, and offered me earplugs (somehow I think this has happenned before!!). The party goers are spilling into the stairwells to smoke and chat, thus exascerbating the noise (I dont think they are permitted but I'm not gonna argue with them). The gym is a joke - dont be fooled by the photos on the web site. The 2 positve points are the hotel location and the breakfast was fine, but neither strong enough advantages for me to ever contemplate recommending this place to any unsuspecting (and tired) fellow traveller. Hotel d'Angleterre , Could be a great hotel but they prefer to throw away customer who have reserved 3 month earlyer. That a shame ! and unbelievable !!! First you make a booking witch is accepted, because hotel is on freidrich strasse front of u bahn station and seems very nice and you agree to 89 euros. that 3 month earlier !! Second You arrive the rigth day friday a 2 pm very early and they say there is no place for you you have to go to another hotel five km from there. NO further explanation ! they tell you it's a nicest hotel 5 stars maritim hotel a postdamer platz . third you are obliged to accept and you discovered they book for you the ugliest rooms 2sd floor with no view eccept a wall 3 meters away in front of you ( and not the berlin one ) . Four the hotel is not at potsdamer platz but 2 km further with no bus no ubahn station except at postdamer 15 minutes walk. And worse there nothing around no restaurant no cafe nothing so you're oblige to pay for the fruhstuck means : 22 euros / person that's crazy when you knows. you it very well for less than 15 euros / everywhere . i think is not fair when you booked and you engaged your credit card you should sleep where you have choosen and not middle of nowhere . shame to hotel angleterre who [--] and lie and practice such quantity of overbooking . my advice if you decide to sleep in the old center of berlin avoid Hotel Angleterre they could throw you directly to Tegel .
