We were looking for a clean, affordable, safe place to stay in walking distance to some restaurants and that is what we got! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, beach was clean. This hotel would not meet the expectations of someone who wants to stay at the Riu...however those just looking for an affordable, nice place to stay wont to disapointed. We just got back from Jamaica and I just realized I never wrote a review for this hotel when we stayed here.I just wanted everyone to know that this hotel is very clean, on a great beach and walking distance to so many shops and restaurants. We stayed here once in January and 9 months latter again in September.( Jan was the better month, Sept too humid) Both times we booked the Ocean Front Room. We watched the beautiful sunsets from our balcony. We never ate at this hotel because I heard Aruba had great restaurants, and it does.We ate at Smokey Joe's, Tony Roma's ,Texas De Brazil( great all you can eat Texas De Brazil). I also recommend Amici's across the street for breakfast(great) and El Gaucho's for Dinner (The Best). Also the Italian place at the lighthouse.(Even better). There is even a pier right by the hotel with great lunches and 2 for 1 happy hour drinks. We liked this holiday Inn because the price was right, which let us come back again, the hotel clean, staff very friendly and it enabled us to do many tours and eat at all the best restaurants. We did the atv tour and snorkeling tour and jeep tour. All three were great! They take you to see the church, the natural bridge , the caves, the natural pools and baby beach. The second time we were there we did the private island tour(De Palm Island). For 100.00 per person you get Breakfast, lunch and dinner, all your drinks and the best snorkeling on the island.Huge blue fish.(We love to snorkel). Besides Tahiti, Aruba was the best trip we ever took.Thats why we went twice. The holiday Inn might be a 3 star hotel but book the best room and see the island.I loved it so much I want to go back again but I forced myself to go to Jamaica instead because I cann't just keep going to Aruba. You could spend 200.00 more per person and stay at the Playa Linda resort right next door but if you plan on going out to eat and do tours stay at the holiday Inn.Just eat out at the 5 star restaurants and have the time of your life! Well, flying was very squished on Canjet Boing 737 carrying just under 200 passengers. I would perfer not the travel with them again if I could help it. They forgot to give us the tourists cards to fill out on the plane before landing in the Oranjestad, Aruba airport. When we got in this pretty big airport there was only two counters open, but they would not let us to the couters for checking in because we all had to stand there and fill out our tourist viisas. Then getting our luggage was a bit scary and time consuming, it was chaotic. Hotel transfer was good and fast by Nolitours, tour buses followed by a cube truck with our luggage.. Checking in was fast friendly but not organized was given a room, but then 15 mintues later a couple was unlocking my door and entering. I sent them down as I was there first so they can get another room. The restuarants were easy to find, however after check in we found out that the dining room would be closed because of the slow season there was apparrently not enough people in the hotel to open the buffet dining room.. There was lots of swimming pool areas, little kids areas, bars, beach chairs, cabanas, clean beach towels, food... The hotel is incredibly safe, clean and quiet, they have the BEST duty free and souvenir shops from most of the surrounding hotels. There is an atual hello kitty store down the lobby! There is an internet cafe, also if you brought your laptop you could have WIFI in your room or lobby or martini bar. However it's NOT free, you must go to the gift shop and buy a $10.00US card scrastch the pin then enter it into the Holiday Inn site. This only gives you 24 hours, so if you use it for 2 hours at 9:00am the next morning the same time it expires. The beach is beautiful and is practically layed out for spending all day. With a beach bar and grill called seabreeze and a beach bar that even serves up blended drinks such as pina coladas. There are always plenty clean beach towels to trade in when you need it and the hut is right on the beach. In that same hut you can book a cabana for yourself or family/friends, you simply pick from the map on the walll where and it goes by numbers, they will write down your hotel room on the board according to the cabana you choose. To get the best pick go early in the morning, this is reccomended especially as you plan on spending the entire day at the beach. This was you can move under the hut as the sun gets extremely hot, and you are able to keep you cell phone and camera away from the sun. Lots of beach chairs but people don't keep it clean, but these chairs are comfortable. On the beach there are several piers and manny water sport activities, paddle boats, jet skies, single canoe, catamarans etc... Shopping in Aruba is a shopprs paradise, but pricy so be careful. They only take American or Aruban Florans. There are bank machines everywhere down the hotel strip including inside of this hotel directly across hotel Casino which is inside the hotel at the very end. For example $6.00US gives you $10.10 Florans, their cions are pretty neat one of them in fact is squared... No nightly enertainment in this hotel, you can either check out the local talent down the street at the restuarants and the plaza or go to the Occidental, but you would have to pay $20.00US. They tend to play Country Western Music at this hotel, they do play latino music at the beach bar. Nolitours rep, tours and guide, Christian is quite friendly and informative he will assist you as much as possible in choosing your additional tour attractions. I must warn you that all tours in Aruba are quite pricy. It was $95.00US to book the De Palm Island tour you leave at 8:00am come back 4:00pm, I travelled by myself and paid a pretty price for each tour. I did the all day jeep safari, I booked and requested to be one of the drivers, however a family cancelled so I trekked with Tony the tour guide. Very well mannered and nice boy he actually is the guy that shows up at the airport when you checked in and gets your luggage on the truck to the hotel. Aruba has no crime, is very clean, friendly, acessible by local city bus, the public city bus stops in front of the hotel if you pay $2.25US and ask for a return ticket you can visit the downtown area yourself and return when you want because the bus shelter is in the middle of the shopping district except Sundays it runs every half an hour. To do this via taxi, one way would cost you $25.00... Down the hotel strip, Restuarants...Wendys, pizza hut, dunkin donuts, baskin robbins, Taj Mahal, Maharaja, Lots of cafes, bars, pizzarrias, more names also that you would recognize. Lots of chinese restuarants, japanese, italian etc... Shopping, Guess store directly across the street, gold jewerly stores are like crazy. But just to warn you although I really like my pure gold its very pricy there in fact so is silver... The flea market near the bus terminal get your crafts, souvenirs and trinkets much cheaper than the stores inside the hotels or across the street at the plaza. However they will only bargain if you buy more than one of the same thing, ie. costume jewerly sets. The staff at the hotel they are just incredible, it would not be fair for me to mention names as everyone at this hotel are truly awesome people! Concierge, front reception, bars, restuarants, maids, maintenance, managers, waiters, waitresess, maityr d, chefs, ....You know they maintain their peacefulness no matter what and get the problems or situations resolved. There is no way you could leave the Holiday Inn Sunspree and not feel rested, renewed and stressfree... The atmosphere of the island is true to what they claim, Aruba one happy island! I can't actually wait for another vacation so I can book again at the Holiday Inn Sunspree! If you need more info ask me, if I continue I can write a book... Or go see for yourself! Everything about this hotel was excellent. The hotel was worth every dollar that they charge to stay here. This is a great FAMILY hotel. There is so many activities for the kids to do. The beach is basically right outside the lobby. My family would definitely stay here again if I we were to come back to Aruba. There are shops and restaurants right across the street. FIVE STAR resort without the cost. When we arrived in aruba we had an enjoyable experience since the minute we landed. When we got to the Holiday Inn we waited to checkin and were moved into the Bonaire Tower. The Holiday Inn has a great location and the staff is very welcoming. The rooms and the overall hotel is very clean. The only downfall is that you must wake up early to reserve a hut and or a dinner reservation. The food was always good and there was a wide variety. The beach is beautiful and was mostly clear. The kids club was always welcoming to our children. There is also a laundry matt on every other floor which was very useful. Overall a great trip and we hope to go back soon! Fabulous holiday - this hotel had the best part of the beach. We had a beautiful view, fantastic food, (not to mention the cocktails!) and the staff were brilliant. Children's activities every day kept my daughter happy too. Just got back from a week at the Holiday Inn in Aruba. After reading many reviews I was a little hesitant to book this property, but figured that I would have to find out for myself. Aruba is a fantastic destination - beach is gorgeous - the local people were not as friendly as I thought they would be - and very slow (mexicans are quicker). At night it was nice to go for a walk and have a coffee or dessert in one of the many restaurants/Cafe.. Upon arrival was very impressed with the hotel - check-in was arrived at 12:45 p.m. and was dressed and in the ocean by 1:30 p.m. Lobby - clean - airy - cozy and very friendly Beach and Pool - fantastic - what else is there on vacation! Rooms - ok this was the most disappointing part of our vacation. The rooms need serious work. The rooms are outdated - very moldy - bathrooms are falling apart - we stayed in the Curaco Section ground floor - our room faced the Playa Linda and I guess there was a garbage dump so we couldn't stay outside on the patio. Towels were very rough - showers were gross - my kids did not want to take a shower bc they were so dirty. Food/Restaurants - fantastic - variety of food and very tasty - absolutely no complaints. Entertainment - Casino - other than that the "shows" were very poor and very boring. Overall I would not rate this hotel a 4 1/2 star - perhaps a 3 1/2....there is alot of work to be done - alot of updates to be made.....to get to Aruba its a great choice! We decided to go away for spring break 2009. We went to a travel agent, gave our requirements. He recommended the Holiday Inn Sunspree Aruba, (HISA). We booked the trip in November, 2008, and very excited. After booking, I looked up reviews for the resort. I became very concerned of our choice. Many reviews I looked at showed very poor ratings and opinions of the resort. Were we going to be satified and happy with the vacation? Well, those reviewers don't know what they were talking about. The stay at the HISA was excellent! The facilites were wonderful. We didn't have to wait in lines for towels. The resort is in a perfect location close to shopping and restaurants. It has the best beach on the island. Lastly, facilities, service, rooms, food, and activities couldn't be beat. We din't find any rude or unhelpful resort associates, or dirty rooms. My family can't wait to go again next year. To our travel agent, great choice! To the resort, thanks for the great time, and keep up the great service! We just return March 6,2009 from the Sunspree resort, there were 12 in our group and not one of us would give a bad review. We all had a great time Food: My husband and a couple friends are very fussy eaters, they did not have a problem with any meal. You have to try the omlets they are great and the jerk chicken hut.If you do not like spices ask for the chicken or pork with no sauce still good. Rooms: Our room was 1123 on the ground floor it was great. Clean large beds very comfortable. Resort ; Lots to do on the resort itself , this is the first place we have gone to where the employees are not aloud to accept tips, if they are caught taking tips they will lose there job. When we wanted to tip a waiter or bar tender husband would palm the money and shake hands. Tips: There is a flea market across the street from the resort , When going over to do a little shopping you will be asked if you need any form of drugs and I mean everykind under the sun. We just kept walking and the words "NO thank you "They do not follow you but they do ask alot.At this market there is a woman named Bobby not bad prices at her store but she likes to get you drinking there hoping you will buy more. If you want your own private tour guide and bus ask for HOMAR , he is usually in the front lobby. Took us to Montego bay and Negril very reasonable and fun.Alot cheaper than what the tours are asking. Email me if you have any questions , love talking about this vacation fiirst of all me my wife and child of three and a half had a great time,we met lots of great people . it was sunny and 30 the whole week, are rooms were cleaned everyday, the maid service was great, the place was always clean hallway, elevator etc, the outside grill has something for everyone, that you can go munch on something all day. i would go all inclusive you get your moneys worth.the resturants have excellent food options what ever you want fish ,beef, pork,or pasta great merlow wine. and dont be a tight as.s tipp a little you wont go broke by tipping the odd buck or 2. there s always shade you can pull a lawn chair to so dont get caught up in fighting for a shaded hut you have better things to do with your time. the place across the streets was pretty cool we usualy went there after dinner for a walk and get an icecream and there is also a little water show. the staff was very nice at the holiday inn and respectful. if you gamble wait till your second last night cause if you go early and loose big it might ruin your vacation i didnt do much gambling but i talked to a guy that did and he was frowning the whole week. anyways my son loved the pool and food and sun, if you have kids re apply the lotion the sun is very hot there, well anyways im jelous that who ever is reading this is going there i cant wait to go back again with my family. im not going to bother to spell check this message you should get my point. have a good time. mango tango great drink try it .ps if you can sneek your way into the timeshare hotel nextdoor they have a cool lazzy river but hide your wriste they got security on the briges looking for the bracletts. cheers rob from toronto I booked a vacation through Expedia, which by default comes with the Superior room--MAKE SURE it says Superior. I was very concerned about prior bad reviews, but everything worked out, maybe because we were placed in the Bonaire Tower. The room was very clean, everything functioned well and was in good shape. We had a garden/ocean view and it was absolutely lovely. Bartenders, concierge and housekeeping were all friendly--I did not interact w/ other staff. The check-in desk staff were not butt-kissers, but I wouldn't say they were unfriendly like other reviewers indicated in their reviews. Everything is expensive, but the hotel has great souvenir shops, where you can get a $10 wi-fi card for wireless internet use if you bring your laptop. I was able to catch a wireless signal and go online from my room in the Bonaire Tower and parts of the Garden (I could not get online on the pool/beach side). The mall across the street is good, too, but too pricey. The only complaint I have is that while the beach was lovely, after our 2nd day, there was a lot of seaweed on the sand and the hotel did not clean it. There was also some garbage (empty cups) which other guests left behind. The water was very calm and great if you prefer not to get knocked down by salty waves. Aruba's weather is great because it's not humid and feels cool despite temperatures of 85+ due to the breeze & dry air. It rained one day while I was there, but it quickly cleared up and the locals told me it's very, very rare for rain in Feb at all. Holiday Inn's location is great since there are lots of stores & restaurants nearby. They had plenty of great TV (HBO, Sho, Cinmax, etc.) to watch in the rooms, also. Aruba is now my new favorite destination bc as a female, I actually felt safe--I did not get harassed or gawked at and everyone (guests & locals) was very friendly & well mannered. No one bothered me, which usually always happens when I go anywhere in the Caribbean. Dining: I recommend breakfast/lunch at Cafe Roma next door & Benihana for dinner. If you go downtown, the Old Fisherman is fantastic for dinner. Everything else is a rip-off. Airport: If you're leaving Aruba for the U.S., go to the airport early! U.S. Customs checkpoint is actually IN ARUBA, & you have to reclaim your baggages for U.S. check after check-in. This could take awhile, so don't try to go to the airport 1/2 an hour before departure. just returned from a one week all inclusive, stayed in curaco tower room was clean thanks to Luz Mary who was very nice. had breakfast in main dining area every morning staff excellent, food good, had dinner every night in the da vinci restaurant and it was excellent. special thanks to Eddy, Cecicilia, and Karel who made our evening dinners memorable, food was very good and service excellent. if you want to have a nice time then have a nice time attitude and everything will work. i found that showing your appreciation to the staff ( $2 here and $5 there went a long way to getting looked after very well at this place and they will not forget who you are ) the iguana bar was nice Hamilton was very attentive to our needs and you can grab a steak on a bun from there while lounging by the pool or the beach. everything is right there. it was our anniversary and they treated us to a bottle of champagne at dinner on our special night. Rented a car at the car rental desk beside the casino for a day and put a 147 km on it saw the whole island it was pretty nice, did the submarine thing it was also pretty cool. This trip was great value for the money and the people were fantastic. We are going to return to this location again soon. Mr. E. Giles, Barrie, On. Canada My two daughters and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Aruba June 13-20 on the all- inclusive plan. I have traveled to the Caribbean extensively over the past 10 years, and have visited 27 different islands. I have stayed at numerous resorts, sailed on cruise ships, and small sailing ships. Aruba is one of the most beautiful islands I have visited, and the Holiday Inn Sunspree was an excellent value, especially when travelling with an 8 year old and and a 22 year old. When we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and friendly attitudes from the staff. The bellman remembered our names and greeted us each day. We were given a free upgrade to the Aruba tower (the nicest building on the property) without even asking. The room was very clean and comfortable, and did not smell like mold. It was no different than our room at RIU Tropical Bay Jamaica, and much less expensive. The housekeeping staff did a great job cleaning our room everyday. We had a refrigerator, coffee maker, safe, television, alarm clock, which is pretty much the "norm" for most hotel rooms. The houskeeping staff kept the hotel public areas very clean. The food was pretty good. Corals (buffet) offered cereals, fruit, eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, french toast, breads and omelettes each day. We ate at Sea Breeze (casual dining) for lunch and dinner often. The shrimp, tilapia, and ribs were very good. We ate at Da Vinci's (Italian dining) twice, and the pasta and desserts were very good. Having stayed at several RIU properties, the RIU's food was only slightly better. It is not "gourmet dining", but it wasn't nasty, and I didn't expect it to be gourmet because the Holiday Inn is in a lower price range. From my travels, gourmet food, and premium liquors, cost lots more $$$$$. We did use the non-motorized water equipment (free) daily. The cost of kayak from local vendors was $30.00 for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Both of my girls really enjoyed the paddle boats and kayaks. The beach in front of the hotels is absolutely beautiful. It is also shallow, calm, with very little surf. Plenty of chairs and huts for shade. We really liked the fact that the pool faced the beach. It was nice to be able to be at the pool and still enjoy the beautiful view. The pool had a kid side, and an adult side that is seperated by a small bridge. The kids were pretty good about staying at the children's side. The highlight of the trip was the excursion on the Jolly Pirate ship. They took to three different snorkelling spots, including the wreck of the Antilla. My kids especially liked the swing, and swinging out to the water. They let us swing at Malmock (excellent snorkelling), and the water is beautiful and clear there. We also, enjoyed the Discover Aruba tour offered by DePalm Island tours. We made a stop at Baby Beach which was awesome. I walked the beach and looked at the other properties. I did a lot of research prior to booking this trip, and found that the other properties were much, much more expensive. Yes...they are nice, but you'll being paying much, more $$$$$ to stay there, and some don't even offer an all-inclusive plan. We very much enjoyed our stay at the Holiday Inn, and both of my children ask if we could go back there next year. The hotel is very clean, and comfortable. If you want 5 star gourmet, there are other properties on the island that fit that criteria, just be willing to pay for it. For us, we were very happy with our stay at the Holiday Inn, we would definately return, and it was great to use the extra money we saved by booking this resort to shop, and do the other things we wanted. If you are looking for a great value, this is it. We (my husband, myself and 2 daughters 17 and 14) stayed at the Holiday Inn from June 4 - June 11. This was the 2nd time we stayed here (stayed 2 years ago at same time). I have to say that the food and the staff was so much better this time. We had the time of our lives. The weather was great. The last time we were here they were building the strip mall across the street. The strip mall is finished and if you go there, you must see the water show. It was fantastic. Won a litte in the casino and won at bingo. It was great. Last time we went, I won at bingo also, so it was well worth it to play there. Met alot of nice people there. We stayed in the Bonaire tower again and were completely satisfied. The maids did an awesome job of cleaning. We were there for the Stanley Cup finals (we are from Pgh) and wanted to watch part of one of the games in our room, but our TV reception was terrible. I mentioned it to the front desk and within 1 hour, we had a new TV delivered to our room. What service!!! Now the food. The food was awesome and much better than last time. The desserts were to die for. Both the Seabreeze restaurant and DaVinci restaurant had delicious food. Please do not go by alot of the reviews you read here. The Holiday Inn is a great place to stay. The beach and pool are great. Please think about staying here. For the price, you can't beat it. I can't wait to go back!!! I loved Aruba and the Holiday Inn and would go back again. Location was the best on the island, beach was perfect and food was excellent. Only gripe I would say was our First Choice holiday rep Andy was not very helpful and when he could tear himself away from the Riu Palace he spent 1 hour of his time from 8.30 to 9.30 at the Holiday Inn ! It turned out that the brouchure was misleading. We paid forr an all inclusive package which included 2 Al a Carte restaurants and an all you can eat buffet. This turned out not to be the case as the buffet was only open for breakfast and the odd evening. This caused some upset for some people as the choice of food was then not as good. When people complained he did nothing but make people feel silly for complaing or patronized them. But enough about Andy he would be the only complaint I had about the holiday !!! Snorkiling was fab and we saw a turtle !! I would recommend the jeep tour as well. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree from May 4th to 11th. We were also on the same Canjet Plane and agreed very cramped and them forgetting our Papers for immigration did not help, but once that was over the party began. First impression was the friendly staff when we arrived from handing out fruit punches in their open air lobby and cheerful check in people. While we were checking in someone was giving one of the check-in people a hard time and she handled it very proffesionaly. I travelled with my husband my two daughters in there 20's and their boyfriends. Our rooms were very clean and kept clean every day, I also have to say how impressed I was with the washrooms around the beach area, have stayed at a few different islands before and never have seen this. My one daughters boyfriend who is a chef said if the washrooms are this clean then you know the kitchen is lol. Because it was low season they moved us to the Aruba tower because originally we were to be in the Curucao Tower, the only complaint from some people because of the low season now the buffet was closed at night, but both ala carte restaurants were open and the food was good. They had a Texan bbq by the pool on Wed night which was fabulous, on Mother's day they had a bruch in the Buffet, also the Iquana bar was open for snacks till I think 11:30 The beach was absolutely beatiful they had huts that you could reserve we did get up early because there were 6 of us to get a bigger hut, but some of the people we met said they were able to get a hut no problem when they got up for just two people. The pool area was nice may be a little small to some standards, but for me I rather have the beach. We did a snorkeling trip with Octopus which brought us to Catalina Bay, there are others that also bring you to a ship wreck, but being my first time i didn't want to do both. Had a great time doing this it was so relaxing. They gave you a lite snack and also there were drinks on board. We also did an ATV tour with Pelican travels which was a blast took us to the natural bridge, then the ruins and finally the natural pond which was unbelievable, they also did horseback riding with the same company which I would recommend. The cons. desk helped us with again they were most helpful. I know I could go to the other fancy hotels on the island but I didn't get the same caribbean feeling as I did at Holiday Inn Sunspree they all hugged us goodbye when we left and made us feel like we needed go back again. The other travelers we met there were also so much fun to talk to, this experience was very much One Happy Island. Just so you know I have traveled to St. Matin's 3 times Panama 1 time and Cancun 2 times and never felt more comfortable as I did here. Will diffently go back again April 25th -- May 2 Our 5th time back and 4th time at the Holiday Inn...I wouldn't go anywhere else now. We were upgraded free to Ocean Front in the Curaco Tower, which I was reluctant at first due to previous reviews about the renovation not being complete. However, when we saw the view again it was the perfect choice. The Holiday Inn is probably the closest hotel to the water and it's not so big that it takes forever to get out of your room and to the beach. An added plus was that the workout room, which had some fairly good equipment, was right next door. Yeah, the hotel is old, but it still has that Caribbean feel, not like those stuffy new hotels where you pay bigger bucks to stay. I still would never do inclusive at this Hotel...we had lunch at the Seabreeze and I had some chicken quesedilla's and the chicken was horrible! There are so many good restaurants across the street now...that it's a no-brainer. Smokey Joe's is a must and we tried a new restaurant called Scala's which was absolutely to die for. Best Crab Cakes and Mahi Mahi....you must check this one out. Wish we had tried it sooner! Also, if you don't do inclusive, don't waste money on those $6 beers at the bar or in the Hotel party store...go to the mini market directly across the street on the outside of the mall...you'll pay half the price...same with snacks, water and sports drinks. Also bring a cooler with you to the beach, so you can fill it with ice on your floor and you'll be set for a long beach day. Enjoy your next visit to Aruba...we can't wait to go back!! Kevin & Debi, Michigan My husband and I, along with my sister and her husband, in our 40's returned from Aruba April 12/09 after a one week stay. Our past travel experiences include 4 cruises aboard Royal Caribbean and NCL in ocean staterooms, and twice at the 5 star Gran Bahia Principe in Mayan Riviera Mexico. We have always wanted to go to Aruba but found the price to be a litte to high for our liking. When the opportunity came up to go to the Holiday Inn for the great price that we paid we decided to give it a try. I started to read the tripadvisor reviews and after reading some started to get a little concerned. After arriving we soon realized we had made a good choice. Room - Curacao Tower, dated but very clean. Bed very comfortable. Bathroom in the room definitely nothing fancy, but I slept like a baby every night. The room is nothing you are going to lose sleep over. It's the Holiday Inn. Public washrooms around the resort - spotless and updated, definitely 5 star. Lobby - Has the casino at one end and has a small bar close to check in area and approx. 8 shops for personal or souvenier shopping. Pool - We are not pool users when we travel, but the pool looked clean and considering it's size did not seem over crowded. Beach - Excellent. According to the regulars that we spoke to, the seaweed problem was last year and no one is sure why there was such a problem but remember you can't control nature. Just wish we did not have to line up at the towel hut to reserve a shady spot at 6:30 am every morning. They come at 7:30 am to assign the shade huts and hand out towels. We did notice that if you got out there at 7 or 7:30 you still got a shade hut as long as it did not matter to you where it was. We even checked one day at 9 am and you could still get a shade hut. But upon walking the beach and reading signs, we noticed some other hotels are adopting the same rules. On the positive side it was a great opportunity to meet people from other places or read the paper or a book. You can grab a coffee or tea from the lobby bar or Dunkin Donuts down the beach to enjoy while you wait. When we have cruised or stayed in Mexico if you have a favorite spot you had to be out there early to reserve it with your towel (just not 6:30am). We only save a spot when we plan on using it, not like some others (we will leave for breakfast and lunch only). While in Aruba there were 2 days that we knew we had other plans and did not reserve a spot, and when we returned from our outings later in the day (approx 3pm) we had no trouble finding a place to sit. Food - The buffet is buffet. We only ate there for breakfast and maybe twice for lunch. Yes the scrambled eggs are cold and wet :( . But here is a tip, if you ask one of the waiters or waitresses for eggs to order ie. omlette or over easy, they will go and get it for you from the cook. We were not told this until Thurs of our trip. After that breakfast was great, hot eggs :). The Sea Breeze is open for lunch. For dinner every night we ate at the a la carte restaurants DaVinci and Sea Breeze. The Sea Breeze is excellent for the ocean side, sunset, romantic dinner (request a table up top and be there for about 6:30pm to catch the sunset. You won't be disappointed). These are the only a la carte the Holiday Inn has and they alternate being open, you can eat there every night, unlike most all inclusive hotels where you can only book the a la cartes maximum 3 times. Just remember to make your reservation every morning, although we forgot sometimes and did not reserve until later in the day we were always able to get a reservation, just not prime time. Our only critisim is that although each restuarant had its own menu, it never changed and therefore became a little boring by the end of the week. One evening we decided to try the restaurant across the street from the hotel called Smokin Joes. It is a very relaxed atmoshphere. They serve chicken and ribs and were lined up everynight to get in. My husband and I shared the combo platter which was $40.00US and it had a sample of everything on it, the ribs were excellent. If you want a late night snack you can go to the Iguana pool bar and get a drink or food I think until 12 or 1 am. The buffet closes at 10pm. Location - Excellent and safe. We loved being able to go for a walk everynight (to wear off dinner) outside of the hotel. There were shops across street and down the street and a little concourse across from the hotel where they had shops and restaurants and a water show every evening. You could wonder down to the other hotels and enter their casinos. We did not check out the bars and nightlife but many people were dressed for it and waiting for taxi's in the lobby. Sightseeing - We rented a jeep from National located in the lobby down by the casino and we did the 4 wheel drive around the island. The jeep cost $75.00 for the day. We saw the lighthouse, the chapel, the fallen natural bridge. We tried to find the Natural Pool and we know we were close but the area seemed treacherous and we turned back (did not want to risk a flat or 2 in the middle of know where). We finished up going to baby beach to snorkel, and there was good snorkelling at baby beach. The whole day was a lot of fun. A couple of days later we wanted to try some other beaches for snorkelling. We rented a car ($60US) and drove 5, 10 mins down the road and went to Malmok beach, Arashi beach and Boco Catalina beach for snorkelling. Great snorkelling. That evening we took the car and went Mini Golfing at the Joe Mendez Mini Golf centre, I would definitely recommend this if you are travelling with children. They are open until 11pm. One afternoon we took a taxi into Oranjestad for shopping and that cost $11.00 each way. The guys went deep sea fishing one day with another couple. The boat owner did not show up at 6:30am as arranged (it's a he said she said issue) The Air Transat rep was to have everything arranged. Anyways, they did get underway at 9 am. but only caught two small baracuda in 4 hours. That cost $75US each person. Hotel Entertainment - Not much, we saw some dancers out by the pool one evening, another night they had the guy from the lounge/disco out singing and he had a good voice and was fun and tried to get the crowd going. We checked out the casino a couple of times and came out ahead. A couple of nights they played some movies under the stars for kids and adults and that was located next to the childrens pool. Speaking of children, a lot of people on TA complain about the unruly children at this resort. We did not have a problem. There was the same number of children on this holiday as there was in Mexico and any cruise I have been on. Communication - we used the internet located at the opposite end of the lobby away from the casino, you inserted your bills into the slot $1.00 got you 3 mins I think. The first time you have to set up your username and password. In conclusion - We had a really good time and now that I am home and had time to reflect more on the holiday I would definitely go back and probably have a better time the 2nd time around as I know where to go and what to do and some stuff we missed and I would like to give a try. Would I stay at the Holiday Inn again? Yes. Would I try another hotel? Yes if the price was right. If you don't go all inclusive you should plan on breakfast $5 - $15 per person, lunch $10 - 25 per person and dinner costing you about $50 - 75 US per person, and these prices are per day. You do not get harrassed on the beach by vendors and when you go shopping you get a nice hello how are you today and that's it. Very relaxing. We met people who have been going to this resort year after year (one couple said 15 years) these people seemed to be well off and well travelled so that says something. Just go, relax, take it slow, you don't need a marble bathroom to have a good holiday you just need a good attitude. Barrie, Ontario Cabs to the hotel are $20. Take a cab if you want to be first in line. Check in was fast as they had a special line for Priority Club members that are Gold / Platinum level. The Aruba and Bonaire Towers are recently renovated. They look nice, especially by 3 star standards. Keep in mind that the ratings I gave this hotel is by comparison to other 3 star hotels. All the Family Suites are now in the Curacao Tower, which had not been renovated as of December of 2008. The Family Suite allows 2 adults to stay in the same room with 3 kids. There is one Family Suite on each floor and they are all right next the elevator, which is old and noisy. My biggest complaint about our stay is that the elevator woke me up several times a night. You had to make reservations for the 2 a la carte restaurants but it was worth it! Book your reservation at guest services in the lobby. Food was the most improved part of the hotel. Service was faster then in the past. The buffet breakfast was similar to before. They had just about any item you could want including made to order omelets. For lunch you had three choices: Iguana, SeaBreeze or buffet. Corals Restaurant this casual restaurant facing the beach that serves buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Café Da Vinci is an Italian restaurant. Dinner reservations and proper attire (no shorts, jeans, sandals or tank tops) are required. Sea Breeze Restaurant is outdoor next to the beach. Iguana Bar by the pool served about 12 different items including: three types of pizza, steak, chicken wings and grilled fish. This meant that one could eat without leaving the beach. The beachside fitness center has windows overlooking the ocean. Our kids (7, 9,and 11) enjoyed the Kids' Club. The zero-entry swimming pool is nice. The kids pool and adult pool are adjacent to each other and kids are often in the adult pool. We kept our kids out, but no one else seemed to. The Holiday Inn is not near downtown, but across the street there is loads of shopping for gifts and pretty much anything else right there. We found that to be great, being that we only went downtown once. The trip to downtown is 15 minutes by bus and is only $4.60 for a round trip ticket. The driver gives you a ticket for the roundtrip fare. To get downtown, you can take a taxi for about $20US or a bus for $2.30US. We chose the latter. Very easy to travel to downtown from the hotel, just hop on the bus (stop is practically right in front of the hotel). The hotel is clean and well kept. We went All-Inclusive and enjoyed it. Food is very expensive on the island. The kids got cokes by the pool. The All-Inclusive would be a lot more attractive if signing for each drink was not required. That slows down the service and makes you feel obligated to tip for slow service. We enjoyed our stay very much and we have reservations to return this December. Just got back from our stay at the Holiday Inn. The Palm Beach hotel strip is beautiful and the Holiday Inn has one of the best locations. I rented a windsurfer for the week from the Vela High Wind Center which is a short 8 min walk up the beach. The beach was very clean and water is calm. The Holiday Inn was less than half the price of it's neighboring hotels. You gave up a little in the luxury department and the rooms were dated, but they were certainly adequate. My only complaints would be the cost of the meals (what's up with the 15% service charge that the waiter claims is not a tip) and too many indifferent (borderline surly) staff. Was reluctant to go to this hotel as many of the reviews I read were not pleasant. WRONG, this hotel was fabulous. The buffet and restaurants were 1st class all the way. I have travel to many parts of the world and this one is one of the top places. My 1st all inclusive and I must say I was shocked at how wonderful everything was. I felt like royalty the way I was treated. The entertainment, the beach, the staff, everything was super. Would and have recommended this hotel to everyone and anyone who will listen. My buddy and I just returned from our week long stay at the Holiday Inn Sunspree, Aruba. Everything was comfortable and hassle free. Our room was cleaned everyday, even on the days we didn't wake till 3:00. :-) Check-in was a 10-15 minute wait, but going by Aruban standards, a 10-15 minute wait is short. I'd secured a price of $95 a night by finding a cheaper rate on Orbitz than what the Holiday Inn site was advertising. They will price match it, plus deduct 10%, I just called the 800 # and it was done. The location is probably the best on the Island. Holiday Inn is close to most everything. Although, it is a good idea to rent a car, they are inexpensive and allow you to see everything. We have been home a week from our trip to Aruba and our stay at the Holiday Inn and it is one of the few holidays I was really sad to see end. I have to say, the reviews made me very nervous about what I was going to encounter. We have never been to Aruba, but chose the Holiday Inn based on the referral of my brother who spent his honeymoon there. We are use to holidaying in timeshares, so we have been to many high end resorts over the years. This was the first holiday for my husband and I without kids in 22 years, so we wanted it to be special. We had an absolutely perfect time. We found none of the complaints in the negative reviews to be an issue. We went on March Break, which usually is the busiest time of the year for sun holidays. We stayed in the Aruba tower which was exactly what we booked. We never waited in line for anything...drinks, meals, front desk....Service was prompt and courteous. Bartenders were attentive and fun. Our room was well cleaned every single day. Not only cleaned, but tidied as well. We were very impressed. We ate in the buffet for breakfast everyday. Yes, it's like a cafeteria, but it's a buffet. We got what we wanted, and the service by the staff was great. We ate at the Iguana bar, or Seabreeze for lunch everyday...Food was awesome. We had no trouble getting dinner reservations at the DaVinci or SeaBreeze every single night. We loved the location. The Holiday Inn beach is the largest, and is always kept clean. We never lined up for a hut, and always got one by noon every day. We loved the highrise section because you could walk everywhere for dinners, at night, to various casinos. We loved the energy of it. It did not seem overcrowded to us. Overcrowded is Disney at March Break in Orlando or the beach in front of the Marriott Surf Club! The drinks were fabulous with lots of fun options and certainly strong enough. We actually enjoyed signing for our food and drink because we went all inclusive and wanted to see if we were getting our money's worth and indeed we were. For us, just the two of us, we liked going all inclusive because we didn't have to worry about where to eat for dinner, or if we had money on hand. Certainly if I were going with the kids, I would probably not do the all inclusive but it was a real holiday for us. We would absolutely go back to the Holiday Inn, and can't really understand the negative reviews this hotel receives. Don't let them stress you out. It is a wonderful place to begin your love affair with Aruba! This was my 3rd stay at the Holiday Inn ( 8th time in Aruba ) and all I can say is you get what you pay for and a little more. Yes if i wanted to pay another $700-1000 I could stay elsewhere but the is nothing wrong with the Holiday Inn. They have one of the best beach areas on Palm Beach. The pool area is well kept and spacious. The rooms are typical Holiday Inn rooms ... comfortable beds and bedding, tv with all cable stations, safe, refrig, etc. I've never gone all inclusive due to so many good restaurants and bars in the area. If youre trying to watch your $$ ( especially when you really dont need your room other than to sleep ) the Holiday Inn is the way to go. I'd rather spend my $$ saved on good food, drink, and gambling. Enjoy Just got back from Aruba.. 3rd time. First time staying at the Holiday Inn. A little leary from reviews, but honestly, we did not have one complaint. Check in was a little slow at 2pm- we were the only ones in line, but took over 15 minutes. She upgraded us to an ocean view room after I asked at no extra charge. We stayed in the Bonaire tower.. great rooms with big refrigerators, safe and iron/board. Rooms were clean and made up on a timely manner. We ate breakfast at the buffet every day but one and it was good. Dunkin Donuts located within walking distance on the beach too. Very expensive for everything. Ate dinner at Old Man and the Sea and it was excellent. Go there if you are not in a rush as the kitchen is too small to accomodate high levels of tables. Taxi is about $35 to get there. Overall Great Vacation! We stayed in the Curaco tower, I think it was called, which is supposedly newly remodeled, but further from the lobby and the beach/pool area, so there is a walk to get to these things...they are not just at your feet. You pay a bit more for these rooms, for some reason. This was not a huge deal because my kids are older. We arrived really late (after midnight) and were surprised, (and dismayed) that there was no room service after midnight. That was a big problem. We had 8 hungry teens and nowhere to feed them. That was therefore the low point of our stay there. But somehow we found some cookies in a vending machine, and after buying enough of them, they shut up. The exterior and interior halls clearly show the age of the hotel, and that was daunting as we arrived. However, the rooms we reserved were all very clean, new carpet and paint, a bit on the small side, but adequate. The bathroom tiles were pretty worn out, but again clean and adequate. Housekeeping was outstanding! Came early and often, very attentive!!!!!!!!!!!!! There was loads of hot water and it smelled like normal US water, not like some places in the carribean which are heavily sulfured.. We had a no-frills room, and we overlooked a parking lot with garbage bins. But you could also see the pretty water. We didnt spend too much time on our balcony! The hotel staff was very helpful. I did not encounter any rudeness at all. They probably could use more help at busy times at the main desk. I loved the beach, even though there were some episodes of seaweed that dotted certain spots for sections of time. Seaweed was easily avoided and you could swim past it in a few strokes. The seaweed was everywhere on palm beach when we were there...it moved up and down the beach, depending on the time of day. Our hotel was very diligent about cleaning it up.. They did a phenomenal job of clearing the sand daily! The palapia thing is always annoying. To have to get up before 7 am on vacation to get a hut is truly aggravating, but on the other hand, how else can these things be distributed? So for an investment of 45 minutes most days, i got us a little hut so we wouldnt totally bake in the sun. The one day i decided not to get a hut, we were still ok with lounge chairs, and by 3 pm someone had vacated a hut we could claim. There were a lot of fun activities for the teens and they were kept busy! Silly games and contests engaged all of the kids and us parents! We played rounds of volleyball, as well. And some of us went to the tennis courts and were only put out by the high wind one day. Roasting hot, though, if you went past 9am. The food was barely average both poolside and in the two restaurants we ate in. There was no beachside wait service. The italian restaurant stood out for the service and the food. The drinks poolside were potent and very reasonable...and a very nice 2 for 1 happy hour! Finally, the selection of stores in the lobby were very nice. A "delicatessan" where you could get anything to eat or drink..like chips, cookies, cereal and milk, cheese and crackers, etc...as well as (high priced) liquor...if you buy local stuff it was actually cheap. The sundry shop wasn't bad either. The gym was sorely lacking and hot as the dickens... wonder where the air conditioning was! I managed to sit on a stationary bike for an hour, but had to go at half speed due to the intense heat of the place. They should have common area free wi-fi but they do not. But you can buy a day of internet for 10 dollars. Or a week for 35 dollars. So, with all these kids, we did that. It works for one computer at a time. So all in all, I have decided I will be back again. This is a very reasonably priced hotel and totally meets my needs. Very clean, nice employees and a great location. Yes, it is a busy place and the palapas fill up quickly, but it is worth the money. Easy walk to many casinos and plenty of restaurants nearby. Our only complaint is all the kids in the adult pool. But, what ya gonna do.......they're kids!! We will stay here again. Oh, the bed was wonderful!! It is not a fancy place but we didn't want fancy. The buffet was ok but pricey, $18.33 for one breakfast. Iguana Bar has a real good lunch and drinks are great. Was at the Holiday Inn Jan18-25. Had read the reviews on this site for over a month and was not sure what to expect when I got there. Well I had a GREAT TIME!!!! Paid only $998 plus taxes for all incllusive and boy was it worth it. As in some reviews, its true $1 here a $2 there goes a long long way. My son and I tipped about $120 the whole week, from the bars to the restaraunts and we recieved nothing but the best service. We never once booked for the Sea Breeze or Da Vinci as they always found a table for us. We ate dinner only at those two (3 nights at the Sea Breeze and 4 nights at Di Vinchi) Special thanks go to Mr Kelly At Da Vinci for all his great service! I found the food to be good to great depending on what I ate. Only ate at the buffett for breakfast and found it to be ok, never had a problem of long lines or mothers stuffing away food,(as 1 review mentioned) there was always meat and cheese and I was at the busy time of year. Also special thanks to Hamilton and Roland at the Iguana bar for the great service we got from them!!! Iguana bar was also a good spot to grab a burger, hotdog, wings nacho, steak on a bun. Was in the Curacao tower and it was a little dated and was not the most polished room , but the sheets were clean and I had a great view and I never saw any bugs at all. I was also on the side where there was a bar next door (again reviews complained of noise) and never once was bothered and I was with my 10 yr old son. I was however on a higher floor down away from the ocean. Rented a Jeep for a day and it was only $109 total including all taxes and insurance. Great way to see the Island on your own pace, and only burned $18 in gas. Did the Jolly Pirate and this is a must for all !!!! Not much for snorkelling, but it was amazing. Saw a baracuda, ship wreck and rope swing and all you can drink for 1 great price(did the 3- 6 pm trip).Did the tube ride which was tons of fun for my son but jarred the hell out of me..lol 43 is getting old! Took the bus downtown one day to buy t-shirts and gifts for family and friends and found it to be all jewellery shops, but got to see a large cruiseship. For anyone looking for 5 star this is not the place. But for bang for the buck it is the place to go and I would definately go again. If I were richer I would be at the Hyatt.lol.. Well I seemed to have bonced allover in this review and will sum it up, go in with a good attitude and a smile and tip a little and you will have a great time!!!!!!!!!!! Pictures to follow soon. Overall the week was great. Air Transat needs to sort out the hotel registration with Holiday Inn-it was appalling. Almost 300 of us waited in line for 1.5 hours to register when we arrived at the hotel. No refreshments were offered and for people with children it was difficult. The rooms themselves were clean and the staff very friendly. We were in the Curacao tower which has not been renovated but our room was lovely. There is a good variety of food and the buffet usually had a theme at dinner which was fun. You have to sign up to get a shade hut and the hotel does not explain this well. One or two arguments on the beach proved interesting to watch but I blame the hotel for the confusion. We did not have any problems as we lined up daily and went through the process. The beach is lovely but if you want to snorkel you need to go outside the resort to another beach. The water is too cloudy and sandy to make snorkelling possible. As I wanted to just relax and read it was the perfect situation to do this. We went to Aruba Holiday Inn sunspree because the price was right. All I can say is if you go away to Aruba stay all inclusive the food there is soooo expensive. The resort was nice the room was not to extravagent but it worked. The food was amazing with alot of selection. Staff was great and very friendly. I would totally recommend this resort if you were looking for something nice and low key. We stayed at the Holiday Inn for 2 weeks in May, the weather was perfect and Aruba is an amazing island. We had a lovely beach, probably the best on the island and the pool area was also very nice and perfect for young children. However we were very dissapointed to find out that the main buffet restaurant would only be open for breakfast and the odd evening throughout our stay, leaving us with very limited choice of food especially when travelling with a 4 year old! we only had the 2 al a carte restaurants to choose from, one of which was italian that I dont eat so that left us with the sea breeze that had an option of about 5 different meals to choose from for the whole 2 weeks we were there. My daughter literally lived off chips and my dinner consisted of mainly chicken and chips every night! We didnt bring money to eat out as we were all inclusive and didnt think we would need too, its also very expensive to eat out. There was also no evening entertainment unless you enjoy watchin some sport on a tv screen every night at the bar. The main bar that had evening entertainment was also closed throughout our stay, so most nights we were back in our room by about 9pm watching tv!! I can't complain about the staff at the hotel tho they were all great and the hotel was very clean. the rooms were nice and had everything that you needed. Aruba is a lovely place to visit and I would recommend going there but stay at a different hotel. I have vacationed with Holiday Inn before and found the hotel to a nice and clean. The rooms are basic, like the rest of the resort. The staff are very friendly in all levels. The beach area is great!!!!! But the beach seats do full up fast; So go early!!!! The hotel is located within waiting distance of all local restaurants and stands in front of a small mall with a movie theater. The area is safe (I felt that way), one walk can up and down from the Holiday Inn to the Occidental Hotel Resort see the local shops or take the public bus down town which nice to do for couple of hours. This was our fifth year in a row going to the Holiday Inn Sunspree so I guess we kind of knew what to expect. This was the first year that they put us into the Curaco Tower which is the only one that hasn't been revonated but the room was clean and we had a great view of the beach and the ocean. The only complaint I had was the bar next door that hosted a rock concert one night thay kept my family awake till midnight. Other than that we had a great time, good was OK, not great. The hotel wasn't full and this was the first time that they alternated the closure of their two main restaurants, the Da Vinci and Sea Breeze, too bad. Overall, there was a good value for the money we paid and we'll probably go back next year. Check in was easy, no wait, got right into our room. Had the all inclusive plan, the food really was only so so. I am not a fussy eater either. The buffets got tiresome, the Italian restaurant had some great dishes. The drinks were good, bar staff good but not so happy if you did not leave a tip which was included in our rates. The hut situation is ridiculous, never got one while we were there. Some activities, but a little disorganized. The beach was nice but could be cleaned up a little better. In our room which was pretty decent, in the Bonaire tower. There was food under the refrigerator and under the beds, a little gross. Bathroom was newer and very clean. Had my watch stolen out of my room, I guess my fault for not using the safety box, but I was told since the housekeeper did not claim to see it, the insurance company would not be held responsible. I am quite certain the housekeeper would not claim to see it before she took an 1100.00 Movado watch. Live and learn, gives the staff more reason to steal if no one is ever held responsible. Great activities across the street at the center of the mall, my son enjoyed the water shows and the tons of iguanas. I would probably try another hotel or not get the all inclusive package because of the food, plenty of other places to eat. Did not dislike the hotel but did not love it either. This was our third stay at this hotel in 3 consecutive years. Compared to the two previous stays we found it to have improved. First, on our arrival we were checked in promptly we did not have to wait for the 4 p.m. check-in. Our room at the Curaco Tower was clean and comfortable. Suprised as we have read reviews prior to our departure and some of the previous guests have given some very unfavorable reviews. We did not stay in the main tower this time as I guess we got what we paid for. But as a frequent traveller (ages 63/71) we did not mind. Our main concern was a clean bathroom/room which we did receive. As we were repeat customers at the hotel we were treated with a very warm welcome by the staff and made to feel at home. We found that the meals and services have improved from last year. We were provided with a buffet restaraunt(Corals) where international meals were served everyday as well as the two all-a-carte restaurants(Seabreeze & Da Vinci) which alternated each evening. One must keep in mind that this hotel is a family resort and also that a lot of European Tourists are staying here, namely this time we found a lot of Italian Tourists. We had no problem with them. There were some families with smaller children but again no problem. The only thing that we can honestly complain about is the set-up for the cabanas. People were able to reserve their places early in the morning, when I mean early approx. 7:30 a.m. people were lining up but left the cabanas unattended till later meaning mid-morning or before noon. We had no problem as we had our own reservation - under a big umbrella tree. No one wanted that place as it was little further from the bar but for us it was perfect. The actual beach surrounding the property could have been cleaned up a little better each day as we did find cigarette buts and plastic glasses thrown away unfortunately this is due to the inconsiderate tourist with no consideration to the rest of the tourists. The other thing that perhaps bothered us somewhat is the waiters/bartenders expecting a tip each time they served you and if you did not oblige they somehow tried to ignore you or slow down their services however, we were recognized by the staff both in the restaurants/bars so it was not so bad for us. This hotel has some of the longest staying employees some with more than 20 years on the job. We had a good time and I look forward to going back, but of course at a reasonable price as we are both pensioners and have to live within our means. Don't be scared off by all the negative reviews go and enjoy your stay and if your room is not to your liking they will gladly change it for you, of course in the same tower upon availability at no charge. The other two towers Bonaire, Aruba are more recently remodelled but they come at a higher price so if you can afford stay their if you are on a budget the Curaco is fine, all the rooms have balconies. The pool area is clean and very accomodating for families with smaller children and they have daily activities around the pool. The other advise I can give you is don't visit their casino in the hotel as they are one of the tightest in town, they are nothing but banditos..ha.ha.ha. we had better luck at the Hyatt which is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel, somehow they seem to be a little loser. My family and extended family (10 total) stayed at this hotel over the Easter Holiday and found it somewhat disappointing. We have stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree in Panama City Beach, FL and loved it. This hotel was run down and very unorganized at checkin. It took almost 1 hour to check in with only 1 family in line ahead of us. Once we headed to our room, there was someone in our room so we moved across the hall and that room had not been cleaned and then we moved to our final room and it had a beautiful view. Yes we moved 3 times. The hotel has a great kids activities crew and they did seem organized. The location was great. I had heard that the Holiday inn was done over so I figured for the money it would be a good choice. We stayed in the Curacao Tower and it was in need of a remodel ( We heard from another guest that they demanded to be moved to one of the other towers and that they had been remodeled and were much nicer.) The bathroom had mildew and the shower head sounded like a freight train. The air vents also had a lot of dust or mold on them and were in need of cleaning, it was tough on the allergies. Although the pools were done over and nice to look at, they need to put more umbrellas for shade as people were searching for shady spots all day. One day we managed to get up at the crack of dawn to reserve an umbrella on the beach but that section of beach was gross. There was a trench on one side of the umbrella in the sand so we both had to stay on the same side of the umbrella(cramped). There were also wires and conduit sticking up out of the sand. Not quite the picture of paradise I had in mind. Also, the drinks at the bar by the pool are watered down. Try as I might I could not catch a buzz and I am no drinker! My advice: Spend a little more cash and stay someplace else. Although if you are travelling w/ kids, they did have events for them everyday and some at nite. We just returned from a week in Aruba and stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree. This was our second time there, and we knew what to expect. We had a seven year old and a 3 year old with us and they had a great time. The hotel itself is not bad. I recommend the Bonaire tower. It has been recently renovated and it is close to the front lobby. The beach was not a clear as we remembered it 5 years ago. There was a lot of seaweed in the water but you could still swim. In order to get an umbrella on the beach, you needed to be up and in line by 6 a.m. or earlier so we never had one. When you're on vacation, you shouldn't have to be up that early! The pools were nice and clean. The staff was friendly, but would not go out of their way to speak to you. The food was alright. The breakfast buffet was boring. They had the same things each day and no one there to make you a fresh omelet or fried eggs. The restaurants for dinner were packed but the food was good. The kids club was also good. My girls liked going and made many crafts with other kids. Aruba is a quiet island with no nightlife. If you are looking to relax with the family, this is your place. All in all, we would go back to this resort. The hotel itself is not too bad considering the price. I think it is one of the lower priced hotels on the beach, so you can't expect too much. I wouldn't recomend it for a romantic getaway. Better suited for families with children since they have events, games, etc. designed for kids. The pools are very small and also designed for kids. They do have a small room with a tv and some games for kids to play. They also let you borrow beach toys which was nice. Beach area is good and fairly large...be sure to reserve a hut by 7:00 am. The line starts forming at 6:30 or 6:45 am. Good location as well with a Dunkin Donuts, TGI Fridays, Sbarros within a block, plus a number of other better, higher priced restaurants. Do not eat at Tony Romas - horrible! Front desk staff is not very friendly or helpful - they make you feel as if they're doing you a favor by checking you in. They are very slow, so don't expect a quick check-in. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree because we were on a tight budget and it was the least expensive resort in Aruba... and we saw why. "No Frills" is a term many reviewers have used to describe this place and I think it is the simplest and most accurate description. The food was good, not great. The service was friendly, but very slow. The building we stayed in (there are three available) was very basic. The Curacao Tower where we stayed had three elevators in it: one was out-of service the entire time, another kept having problems (it got stuck with people inside on more than one occasion) and the other was fuctioning properly, but since it was the only one working properly, you often had to wait a while for it. The beach was nice, but very small for the amount of guests the hotel accepts. You feel like people are on top of you. The rooms were clean, but as boring a hotel room you can find. We flew Air Transat and were told that all Air Transat customers received automatic upgraded rooms. If our room was an "upgrade", then I'd be very afraid to see what the standard room looks like. We were all-inclusive, yet still had to sign for every single drink we ordered. This hassle was only made worse by the bartenders who watch you signing and checking if you're assigning a tip to them. Many guests there are not all-inclusive, hence why the do it supposedly, but then why the different-coloured bracelets? Makes no sense. Some have talked about reserving the beach hut. I didn't mind that as I feel it's a lot better than the potentially awkward/confrontational issues that sometimes occur when more than one party claims "ownership" of a hut at other resorts. This system makes it much better, but there was clearly some favouritism (no doubt bought and paid for) as you are only supposed to reserve one hut per room, yet there was one guy who was booking multiple huts. When one guest caught this and complained, she was unfairly ganged-up on by him and his friends and the staff called security on her, even though she wasn't doing anything wrong! It was absurd and unfair. I've seen many people say that it's suitable for families with small children. I would disagree because there are so many smokers. Now that obviously is not the fault of the hotel, but perhaps given that it is a "family" hotel, they could designate non-smoking areas and huts to make it better for the children and non-smokers. Very frustrating to line-up at 6:30 a.m. to get a hut only to have someone smoking like a chimney just four feet away from you. I have stayed at a few resorts in a few locales before. of them all, Aruba might be the nicest location, but the Holiday Inn Sunspree is the last one I'd ever go back to. Next time I vacation, if the Holiday Inn Sunspree is the only hotel I can afford in Aruba, then I will not go to Aruba. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Aruba for one week at the beginning of March with my toddler daughter and with a friend and her 9 year old daughter. The resort is certainly clean and the staff is very friendly but the resort as a whole is definitely no frills. I didn't pay luxury prices so I was satisfied, but I could image some people might be disappointed with the spartan surroundings. After reading the reviews on the upgraded buildings, I paid an additional $150 and stayed in the Bonaire Tower while my friend stayed in the Curacao Tower. It was worth $150, but in all honestly I would not pay the $50 USD per night that the front desk quotes for an upgrade. The only difference between my room in the Bonaire Tower and my friend's room in the Curacao Tower was a fresh coat of paint, new carpet and an updated bathroom. The renovated rooms didn't provide more luxury, just newer faucets and curtains; although it is located in the hub of the resort while the Curacao Tower is located off to the side of the resort. So worth $150 but not much more. The children's pool is excellent for toddlers and small children but is a little too small for bigger children and I think that is why so many children swim in the adult's pool. The beach is spacious with nice sand (albeit not as nice as some other islands we've visited) and is only a few meters away from the pool which is perfect for children who want to go back and forth between the pool and the beach. Again, based on previous reviews I didn't go with the all inclusive package (my friend did) and I am thankful I decided to go with the European Plan. The quality and quantity of restaurants across from the hotel is wonderful so why settle for mediocre hotel buffet food when you can experience a variety of delicious restaurants within minutes. I did eat lunch at the Iguana Bar on the resort everyday simply because it was convenient, but again the food was pretty mediocre. For dinner I ate at Smokey Joe's (lively outdoor restaurant that serves finger licking ribs), Sushiya (yes, I ate sushi in the Caribbean), Dushi Bagels/Burgers, Sbarro (that was for my daughter not for me) and Texas de Brazil which was our best night out and a restaurant I highly recommend if you don't care about price (especially if you add wine to the bill). I brought granola from home and then purchased yogurt and juice from the minimarket across the street for our breakfast and then at lunch would buy the fruit platter from the Iguana Bar ($10 USD while Dushi Bagel had the same platter for only $5.50 USD that I discovered on the last day) along with a meal (Iguana Bar serves pub food like hamburgers, fish and chips, nachos, pizza, steak sandwich, etc). Since we were there in prime time (i.e. winter/March break) the hotel seemed to have many activities during the day for guests and some activities at night which seem to end around 10 pm, but I would have to agree with some of the reviews in commenting that the nightlife was pretty much non-existent. Obviously this wasn't an issue for me and my friend since we were travelling with children, but I could imagine the resort would have been pretty boring for a young couple. I would say that the vast majority of guests were over 65 years old which surprised me since I was expecting more youngish couples with children since the Holiday Inn bills itself as a family friendly resort. Those that weren't part of the retired crowd seemed to be part of the tattooed and cut off jeans crowd (I have two tattoos but I gave up on cut off jeans back in the 80s) who used expletives unnecessarily. I suppose when you have a beer drinking contest twice a week at 2 pm in the afternoon that is the type of guest who will patronize the Holiday Inn. My only real complaint about the resort was the sheer number of people (and I suppose the type of people). I didn't realize how big the resort was so having to get up every morning at 8 am to secure a chair by the pool (not even a hut as people lined up at 6 am to reserve those - thanks but no thanks) was a bit of a nuisance. And many of the guests smoked by the children's pool and then discarded their cigarette butts on the beach. Nice. Would I return? I definitely enjoyed Aruba and found it to be very safe and pleasant. No one is there hassling you to get your hair braided or to attend a time share presentation or to buy poorly made souvenirs/sunglasses/towels/etc like some other islands I have visited. So I would return to Aruba but I must confess I probably would try a nicer hotel like the Radisson the second time around (the Radisson seemed to have the nicest grounds). Stayed at the Holiday Inn Feb.7-16 . First time in Aruba, already been to Curacao. My first impression of the holiday inn was the amount of elderly guests. I think this a popular hotel for older guests because the lobby is ground level and seems very well suited for disabled also. That is a plus for those who need this. The majority of guests were Americans. We stayed in the Aruba tower 4th floor superior room and over looked the parking lot. Ugh! That was a disappointment for me because I love to sit on the balcony to read in the am and around dinner time but I never did that in the 9 days that we were there. The workers park on that side of the hotel and the only thing I used that balcony for was to dry my bathing suits(if you are looking to travel light, Aruba is a great place for drying clothing outside. The dry winds do a good job very quickly.) The room itself was tiny as was the bathroom. Air conditioning very good. And the beds and pillows were excellent. I slept wonderfully every night. Refridgerator was very cold and we had plenty of goodies for the week. We shopped at the supermarket and stocked up on beer and wine , yogurt, milk, cereal and fruit.( Bellhop at the door loaded our groceries on the luggage cart by the front door and brought our bags up to the room for us.) Very nice of him. Annoying getting up in the am for the hut fiasco. I would hop out of bed to stand 3/4hr on line to get an assignment. People working the beach are very nice. But what can I say about this beach? any of you who have been to the ABC islands know that they are not known for their soft sand. And add the amount of people that are packed onto this beach and well... I wouldn't call it peaceful. Or pretty. They spent alot of time bulldozing the seaweed(seems to settle right in the center of the beach front, in front of the pool area). But I never saw anyone raking the beach itself. Straws, cups, and butts litter the beach and that was really disappointing. The sand is quite packed down and well, doesn't hold a candle to the beaches of Punta Cana. The water is comfortably warm and calm, but getting in could be tricky for anyone not steady on their feet. There was a drop off as you enter, a step down anywhere from 1-2 feet and that you must be aware of because you cannot see it through the water( water is pretty cloudy at this particular beach.) Pool area: 2 very small pools and well, no shade in the pool at all. There is no palm trees to shade you and not too many people used them. Lots of Kids. 2 hot tubs with lukewarm water which was just fine for my husband and I. Casino: My husband seemed to like it, but he did comment on locals at the tables distracting guests with constant chatter. A couple nights locals got quite drunk and it seemed that the casino hesitated taking action until guests started complaining. Guess they know them and are tolerant of the behavior. Car Rental: We rented 2 cars for our stay. 1st from All-Drive we got a Suzuki Vitara only thing left at the only rental left. What a hunk of junk. Though it did get us to the supermarket and back and to Baby Beach and up to the California Light House. We returned it within 24hrs . couldn't lock it up...missing the plastic snap on windows. Next rental was the toyota rental on the street between Playa Linda and Holiday Inn. Got a Prius. Able to drive it 1 day and the next am found the battery dead so we returned that one early too. Restaurants: We love Texas de Brazil. Right across street. All you can eat salad bar(not typical iceberg lettuce and cheddar cheese). Nice selection of Cheeses, Olives and Spring mix. Dinner consists of skewered meats offered for as long as you want them brought to the table. And Plantains and Potatoes. Yum. Also Benihana down the street. They carry cold water Lobster for us Northerners.... Food cooked at the table and very good. Best ambiance dinner was at the restaurant at the California lighthouse. Italian Food that rivaled any of the best New York Italian Restaurants. Outdoor seating with the most gorgeous view of the northern tip of the island. Fun night: The Black Hog: eat with your hands bbq dinner, rolls of papers towels on the tables and silly entertainment that involves the whole crowd. Miniature golf and Harley Davidson Rides for the ladies. Barstool go cart races. Lots of laughs and I would go again. One mistake we made: took a taxi into town one morning and could not find a place for breakfast. Dunkin Donuts.... There was not one place that opened before 11:30am and served breakfast food. Eat before you go. All in all, we had a nice vacation. If you want to go away in the dead of winter, ABC islands are a given, great weather and water warm enough to swim in. But the hotels are very pricey, the holiday inn being at the lower end. Food selection is great. Dunkin Donuts on almost every corner. Safe environment. Downside: crowded everywhere. beach packed. We take our 3 20something kids and many of their friends on vacation every 2 years and I really wouldn't call this a happening destination. Not many young people at all. I think the average age at the Holiday inn was about 55... maybe the all-inclusives would be a better choice for the younger crowd, but I really didn't see 20 somethings anywhere on the island ... I would not recommend Aruba to the partying crowd... geared more towards the retirement crowd. And would I go back? Yes, if I was looking for a dead of the winter getaway, otherwise, I'll stick to Playa del Carmen or Punta Cana. Just returned from a week stay at the Hoiday Inn in Aruba. I love to travel and always read tripadvisor for hotel choice so thought I would share my experience at the Holiday Inn Aruba. First of all if your looking for a luxury resort this is the wrong choice, but if your looking for a clean resort in a great location, and good service for a good price, stay at the the Holiday Inn. We stayed in the Curaco Tower and its off to the side of the main entrance, needs a bit of work but it's very clean, the elevator is super slow though, but your on vacation and everyone chats you up in the elevator which is nice. This hotel had a lot of families and older couples during our stay I dont know if thats the norm though? The entertainment was a bit hoaky, Karoake night, bingo by the pool, aquafit classes and movie nights by the pool, but Aruba is very safe, you can feel free to leave the resort. Every night they had a flea market outside the resort where you could buy souveneers and designer knock offs and there's a bus that runs right in front of the hotel every 15 minutes that will take you into downtown for $2.30 return (the downtown core is really nice lots of high end shopping, restaurants, the marina, its a must see if you get a chance) Right across the street theres an outdoor shopping arcade with restaurants, a movie theatre and a liquid fire show. There are 2 pools and a 2 hot tubs which was a nice way to end your day. We had an all inclusive package and there are four places to eat on the grounds, a seafood restaurant which we never ate at (I dont eat seafood) an Italian restaurant , a snack bar on the beach, and a buffet. We had lunch everyday at the beach snack bar, they have burgers, pizza, chicken wings, nachos...I ate at the buffet on the first night and it didnt sit too well with me, I got pretty sick,I'm still not sure if it was the buffet or the heat but I didnt take any chances and never ate there again for the rest of our stay. The Italian restaurant Davinci's was okay but nothing great. The restaurants are only open during certain hours and you have to make reservations but the snack bar is always open, some of the food on the menu had an extra charge even if you had an all inclusive which I thought was odd. Across the street in the shopping arcade theres Iguana Joes(a really good Mexican restaurant) and The taste of Belgium (which is the best food I have ever eaten), if you eat out at all try it-you wont be sorry. If I ever go back I wont do all inclusive the food outside the resort is great and not very expensive. The beach is beautiful clear blue water but theres a lot of broken shells at the shore you have to walk into the water a bit before you stand on soft sand. We never reserved a palapa at 7 in the morning like I read in other reviews, I'm on vacation and not getting up at 7 in the morning, but we never had a hard time finding a shady spot and around 2 or three in the afternoon people start leaving the beach and its easy to grab one. By the way if you take one piece of advice from me dont let the nice breeze or the dry air fool you, the sun in Aruba is killer protect yourself with sun block and stay in the shade as much as possible. Lastly, Aruba is a paradise you wont regret vacationing there. By the way watch out for the jeep tour to the natural pool, the ride down to the pool was the scariest experience of my life. We arrived back on Feb 15/09 after 2 weeks at the Holiday Inn. This was our 3rd time at the hotel and in Aruba. We have always got a room in the Bonnaire Tower, however this time we got the Curaco building. We were told that if you go Air Transat that is what you get. If we wanted to change to what they now call a" Superia room" we would need another $50 a day . After waiting in customs for 2 hours and then the hotel for 2 hours to book in I was not impressed. The Curaco building is in much need of repair. We felt like second class citizans!!! Lucky we had a great maid that did keep the room nice and clean for us. The next day my husband asked to see the rooms in the Bonnaire tower to see what they told us had been renovated in them. Ther was a new coat of paint and the bathroom had been done. I find it really strange that they would even renovate something that does not need doing but leave the Caraco building the way it was 2 years ago when we were there. They said that when they renovate the Curaco building all the prices will go up!. It seems that they now have flights once a week coming in from Italy and they get the Bonnaire Tower. The beach was not as nice as it used to be and not as clean. There used to be a man that cames in a tractor every morning and cleaned the beach very early before anyone set chairs up. Now they do not have him. There was cigarette buts all over the place and plastic cups. People who smoke should take care. We used to smoke but kept a cup for our buts away from the beach. I say one guiy out in the water with a smoke who just threw it in the sea when he finished. Well that was my negative stuff!! I still love Aruba it is safe and the people are great and we did have a great time. The street outside the hotels are very busy now Lots of new places opened. Good night life for young people, however lots of traffic so watch your kids. We would go back to Aruba but not for a while and would try a different hotel. Many regulars were not there this time and the beach has changed not for the good. Oshawa Sally We moved to the Holiday Inn after staying 2 nights at the Marriott on points. The Holiday Inn gave us early check-in in a more expensive room than we paid for. She tried to charge us an extra $50 per night, but we said no to that. She went and talked to her manager and came back and said it was ok and gave us the room keys. The room was typical Holiay Inn. We weren't expecting much, but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. We had a great view of a garden and the ocean. The beach was much bigger at the Holiday Inn and less rocky than the Marriott. There were also fewer kids here. There were 2 pools, one for adults and one for kids. The location was great. The boardwalk connected to all the hotels down to The Westin and there were malls, restaurants and Dunkin Donuts across the Street. We went to the Iguana Joe's Mexican restaurant right across the street twice. They have Happy Hour everyday from 5-7 and the Margaritas are $4. They were pretty strong too. We walked all the way down to the other hotels and checked them out. The Hyatt and the Radisson were the nicest and if we ever went back to Aruba we'd stay there. The Holiday Inn granted us a late checkout at 2pm and I think we could have gotten later if we really pressed it or asked for a manager. But 2pm was ok for us. If you stay here make sure you are a Priority Club member. You get 15% off food and drink at the hotel with a card they give you.

I was so excited about staying in Aruba. Except, it took FOREVER to get checked, and when I checked in, my room was sort of clean. As the days went on, I noticed many many things wrong. my patio door was very difficult to open and shut since there was a dent on the bottom frame, the shower head did not dispense much water, it sounded like a train or someone screaming, there was mold and mildew in the shower, in the sink stopper, and on the floor, my room had NO COLD water (all warm and hot water!), my sink was clogged up, my sink was leaking underneath, and there was tons of dust on the air vent. I was truly disappointed! The only thing that was good about this hotel were the bellhops. They helped us with our luggage and was very nice. Also the entertainment there at night was great! They had great activities for the children, BUT could be a lot more organized and upbeat. Some of the activities staff were not upbeat and happy that they were there. They had great ideas for games, but very unorganized! The hotel was in a great location. Let me start by saying, you can't beat the location of this hotel. It is one of the best there is. So close to everything. Besides that, it was a dissapointing stay. We stayed at the Wyndham, now the Westin, last time and we wanted to try somewhere new. We chose the Holiday Inn for price, location and recommendation. We even upgraded to one of the newer towers, the Curacao. Not worth it. As others have said, why we paid more $ was beyond us....Supposedly these were just redone? Not at all what the pics on the website show the room to look like. The rooms were neat but VERY dirty. My sons hands and knees were black after crawling on the floors....It really was gross. There was mold in the bathroom....and the crib they brought up was filthy...We knew we weren't staying at a luxury resort but weren't expecting these beat up old rooms....The ocean front view is breathtaking though. Highly recommend upgrading for that alone! The beach was dissapointing as well. I heard one woman describe it as Ashtray beach...and she was right. Not that the hotel can be blamed for people not disposing of their butts in the trash but it was loaded with cigs....a dozen or so in every shovelful. Not an issue for adults but for a child friendly hotel, we were surprised. A raking now and then may have helped....Other resorts did that every morning. You do need to get in line for a hut by 6:45....We didn't find that to be a big deal at all. Grab a coffee and get in line...you'll see the same people every day and have some good conversations. And if you want shade, you need a hut. It's hot by 11! We didn't do the all inclusive. The drinks were good but expensive. They do charge the service fee and aren't really upfront about it! You will not see it on the receipt you sign, so you add a tip, then sure enough, it's on the one they give you after you've tipped! We fell for that one only once... The pools were nice and clean. The kiddie pool was great for the little ones. Of course the ocean is beautiful.... The Casino was small but that's how we like it. Never an issue getting on a table. We had a great trip but we would never return to this hotel.... I just returned from a 10 day stay on Feb 2,09. The Curaco building is nasty, outdated, tubs in rooms, odors, mold smelling, I had to stay 3 nights until they finally moved me to the A- Arubian tower which is much nicer. Tear that Curaco building down!!!!!!!!!All inclusive but you have to sign for everything, time consuming, they do cater to the Europeans Italians etc. They have a contract with them. Tipping will get you better service, 2.00 5.00 goes a long way. Long waits at the bar, then signing it gets old. No music in pool area, boring at times. Food is ok, Lot of Italian food. Never could get a Hut long wait lines in am. Long wait at desk, Expensive stores, bring your meds, swimmers ear med etc. overall I probably would not go backk, rain everyday odd for Aruba they say, rent a jeep yourself and explore the island. Nice breeze all the time. just don't stay in the Curaco building you will like A and B towers much nicer trust me............... I just got back from a week at the Holiday Inn, Aruba. It was my 5th time to Aruba over the last 19 years and my 4th time at the Holiday Inn. The check in was incredibly slow, I was given a partial ocean view room in the Curacao tower. I have stayed in this exact room before and had no complaints. This time however the carpeted floor was constantly wet which required us to wear our shoes in the room, a problem with the air conditioner leaking was fixed by Thursday and mostly dry by the time we left. Not a big deal really. Other people complained about cockroaches (I didn't see any) and the noise from the bar next door. The speakers next door are only 7 feet tall and can be a little loud if you are in a room on that side (the even numbered rooms). There was a lot more walking this time, as you can no longer enter through the old lobby. If you have a rental car and park out back you then have to walk all the way around and through the main lobby, that's plain stupid. One of the 3 elevators was out of order the whole week making for long waits for the remaining ones. I had to go to other floors for ice, as the ice machine on my floor didn't work. The buffet is indoors now and was barely passable with all the serving spoons left sitting out with dried out food caked on them. Food safety did not seem to be a big consideration. The food itself was Ok, not great. I did not get sick, thank goodness. The bar in the outdoor restaurant near the Curacao tower is gone, so if you are on the beach near the Curacao tower you have to walk over to the other outdoor bar to get a drink. I could go on and on but I think you get the idea. In short, this hotel has gone downhill since I was there several years ago. I would have rated it a solid 3 star back then but now 2 stars. Not even a chance of 4! I'm sad to say it because I really enjoyed my previous visits, now I will have to find a different place to go. Just got back from the Hoilday Inn Sunspree Resort in Aruba. We stayed there for six days. The following are the positive aspects of the resort. The resort is a decent size. The pool and beach area is really nice. There are plenty of beach chairs in the resort and never ran out of towels. The location of this resort is great. There are some really nice restaurants in the area as well as shops and a movie theater across the street from the resort. Just a piece of advice...if you are going to rent a car dont rent it from the hotel instead go across the street from the hotel, there is a Avis car rental booth there. The cars are much cheapier. We spent $50 with tax to rent a car for the 24hrs as compared to the hotels car company National which cost $100 a day. There is a Tony Roma's near the hotel which was excellent. Now for the negatives of the resort. My main disappointment was the food. Absolutely nasty. I went there with an open mind but honestly i dont even think a dog would eat this food. For example for breakfast @ the buffet all the food was horrible except for the fruit, hard boiled eggs and coffee. That was my breakfast for the 6 days i was there ... pretty pathetic. Dinner there was no different. Oh and the drinks!!!!! ......Really bad!! They gave you these tiny cups in two seconds you had finished your drinks. The rooms smelled like mildew!! Overall the hotel sucked!!! But we did walk down to the other hotels in the area and if we were to go again we would stay at the Occidental which is also and all inclusive... it look beautiful or @ the Hyatt. We loved this restaurant in Eagle Beach called the Screaming Eagle it was beautiful really romantic setting. You can literally have dinner lying in bed. Service was amazing!! ;) Ohh and stop by Senor Frogs we had so much fun there. Aruba is a gorgeous island definitely go and see it.
