We were somewhat reluctant to stay due to reviews, however upon arrival we spoke with the staff, had a look a around and thought we would give them a try. My husband and I were treated exceptionally well by the management, staff, and restaurant employees. All of the rooms were exceptionally nice, new mattresses, clean, and we were even given a room upgrade at no additional cost. As frequent travelers, this is one hotel we will definetely return to. This is in a great location with lots to see and do, good food, a must stay! It was the best hotel I ever stayed at! Anywhere! The free food was the deal clincher for me, though it wasn't exactly free considering we had to catch the crunchy delights as they leaped from the curtains to the table in our room. But what made it even better was the snacks we were able to remove from the walls on our way down to the pool. Sometimes they were fast, though, but that only delighted the kids as if in the middle of a great game. A wonderful bonus as well was the bathroom in a central floor room, it was for the whole floor! My wife and I got to meet SO many new people waiting in line to use the lavatory. Having to 'jiggle the handle' now has a whole new meaning to me. There are so many great things about this hotel that I can't mention them all here, but I think my favorite part of my trip to Saint Joseph was the tour of Benton Harbor with 'Popcorn', a sweetly-sour smelling black man who was nice enough to ride in our car and show us the wonderful sights down Pavone St., Euclid Avenue, and Territorial Avenue where we could find more escorts any time we wanted. And he did all of that for just a bottle of NightTrain! What a wonderful soup kitchen you have Benton Harbor, perhaps we'll find more crunchies on your wall next time we visit! We were attending a wedding in St. Joseph and stayed here for one night. The room was clean, bright and comfortable. I had read the previous reviews and was a little worried. However they have made major upgrades here and it was an enjoyable stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Only negatives- They add a $1.50 daily charge for the room safe which they will remove if you do not use the safe., but you have to tell them . Their breakfast buffet has a good selection but they need more attention from the staff to make sure the entrees are kept stocked. We are out of town boaters who have used this hotel many times over the years. Previous times when we have stayed here we noticed the place going down hill. Yet this last summer we saw them doing some remodeling of the exterior by adding small balconies to each room. We decided to meet a bunch of boaters here for New Years Eve and we were pleasantly surprised that they have made major improvements since the last time we stayed. The rooms were cleaner and I believe have been remodeled. We did notice our bill was charged a fee for having a safety deposit box in our room but they removed this charge if you tell them you did not use it. Seems kind of silly. All in all our stay was much better than we expected and we are glad to see the improvements. We have already planned another stay over Feb. 16th for the Ice Carving Festival. My husband and our two kids stayed for an extended weekend. We were a bit weary after reading various reviews. I have to say, Im confused by some of the comments. Maybe things have been fixed but we saw no evidence of faulty anything. The room was clean and bright. The mattresses were huge pillowtops and the view from our room was priceless!! The front desk staff was very friendly and housekeeping polite. We stayed for three nights and we really got to know the staff. The Manager introduced herself and she told us a bit about town. After staying at six different hotels in the past four weeks, we all vote this one to be our favorite. They even have dog bicuits at the counter!! How cute!! We will be back. I'm a bit baffled by the other reviews here. We stayed one night at this hotel, and found very little to complain about. Our room was on the 6th floor, for $89 it was excellent - clean and neat, large with a nice balcony with a partial lake view. No strange smells that we could detect! Bathroom was above average. The only downside would be the front desk - one girl was being trained by a rather surly man, which made check in slow and laborious, but apart from that, everything was absolutely fine. I would recommend this hotel for its excellent location and good value. After a very friendly and efficient reservation, I had checked out the ratings on this site, I became apprehensive to what we would find. Upon check in I found a clean attractive lobby and a helpful front desk. The room proved to be clean, all items in working order. During our stay any problems (MINER) were resolved quickly by helpful and friendly staff. Our golden retriever enjoyed the dog biscuits provided at the front desk. It’s true that the views are less than ideal; however the only other hotel in the immediate area provides true beach views from a very limited number of rooms. My 17yo daughter and I enjoyed our stay; we even extended it for one night. The beach is wonderful, the shops fun, many restaurant to choose from. For a quick weekend get away from Chicago, I can't think of a better bargain than this. Angelique St. Joseph has so much going for it and for us the Clarion is part of the big picture. We love the fact that we can drive into the Clarion lot and not have to get back in our car at all. This is our third trip to this Clarion in a six year period. I was very concerned based on some of the internet reviews that the hotel had gone downhill. Not so. In fact when I reserved the room I even asked about the poor reviews and they said a year or so ago they had had problems with their cleaning staff but that it had been resolved. We had an adjoining room with our family. Immediately upon entering the room I checked to make sure all the mechanicals were running properly and they were in both rooms. Yeah! To our surprise there were small refridgerators in both rooms. Everything was very clean. True the hallways feel old and have a faint smell but not the rooms. The staff were unbelievably professional and helpful. I totally give them 5 stars. You can't beat St. Joseph if you want to relax, shop, beach, walk piers, bike, take in the children's museum, etc. I'm not a dog person but I was very impressed by the number of people with dogs and that the shop keepers let the dogs in the stores. I will keep going back to St. Joseph and the Clarion. I was really worried when my sister and I could only get reservations at the Clarion Hotel in that area of St. Joseph's for the last weekend in July because of reading many negative comments people had written in their reviews. But since we wanted to be close to the lake, beach and shopping areas, it was a perfect location for us to stay. And, I'm glad we stayed there. Our room was very nice and very clean and the staff is very friendly. The hotel is an older hotel, but that doesn't make it a bad hotel. It just means it has had a lot of people that have stayed there over the years. Also, the bar was nice and the lobby has been updated making you feel very welcome. And, I don't see why people have problems paying $150 for a room that is so close to the beach. You would pay a lot more to stay anywhere else and I think we got exactly what we paid for. If you are looking for a fancy hotel, don't stay here. But if you are looking for a place to sleep in a great location, I would recommend this hotel. I am sure I will return. For a 1950s vintage concrete block hotel that began as a Holiday Inn, this one does pretty well. The staff is friendly and courteous, the rooms are clean and in working order, and the rates are moderate. The view from the Lake Michigan side is nice. The location is within walking distance of the beach and excellent restaurants. Drawbacks include an antiquated elevator system that continually breaks down and a continental breakfast that is dull and unappetizing. Also, there is no outdoor pool, patio, or any sort of facility. They should use the roof of the indoor swimming pool for a magnificent outdoor deck. Stay here, but eat and enjoy the outdoors someplace else. This was our second stay here. Maybe my thoughts about the Clarion were influenced a bit by the discount rate we got, but I thought it was just fine. The room was clean and comfortable. The staff was helpful and friendly. We didn't visit the pool area, however, so can't review that. The location of the place in downtown St. Joseph is excellent. You can walk around town and down to the beach. You may be able to do better in St. Joseph, but without spending more money I don't think you will find a better location with a decent room. Friendly hotel staff, breakfast attendant needed a little help keeping food stocked. The room was small but comfortable. Parking in hotel lot when it gets late is tough because they have a lounge which non-hotel residents attend. Hotel located downtown, many things in walking distance including beach. After reading previous reviews was skeptical, but stay was pleasant. Had issues with my charges, but the GM was on duty and resolved them. I will agree with others who said that the website made this hotel look MUCH nicer than it is. The outside is horrible and gives you a bad feeling going in. Staff is very nice but doens't make up for the fact that you have to wait for 10 minues for an elevator and it is over priced. We booked on their website and got their "lowest" rate of 179.00 a night. A total rip off. I heard someone else saying their rate was 119.00 per night and we were able to have our bill adjusted. The bathroom is terribly outdated and was not so clean. Towels are like postage stamps and were so rough. When our room was cleaned, we did not get enough towels to replace the few we had to begin with. Our light in the bathroom went out and it took them over an hour to figure out what the problem was. I will say that the beds are very comfortable and that was the only positive thing I found. I will never stay here again and would not recommend this hotel to ANYONE. The Silver Beach Hotel (former Clarion) is only 1 of 2 hotels in downtown St. Joseph. It's all about the location, you are in walking distance of EVERYTHING, including the beach and some amazing places to eat and shop. We had a room that overlooked the lake, can't wait to come back next summer for Venetian Fest or the art fair. The view to watch the fireworks would be awesome. The prices are low and the location is great and the staff was friendly what more could you ask for? If I could give this a 3 1/2, I would. It is an older hotel in need of more updating than has been done. Because it was the last available room, we stayed in the Presidential Suite which is actually a business or conference hospitality suite with large wet bar. The bedroom was ordinary. The sitting room was huge, but the bathroom was the size of a broom closet. Some fixtures had no bulbs and we couldn't find the switches for them anyway. There were lamps--one floor lamp between two chairs, and the lamp on the desk--that were not plugged in because there were no outlets for them anywhere nearby or that would not require running the cord across the floor. Our room did not get made up the second day (of three) of our stay. The ceiling had some ugly patches. Now all of these complaints are fairly minor and did not detract from our stay. It's just less than I would expect from the flagship brand of this chain. If this were the Econolodge, I wouldn't even mention it. On the other hand, the bed was fine, the staff super friendly, the lake view outstanding (but not all rooms have a lake view), and the location unsurpassed for convenience. I will stay here without hesitation every time until something better comes along. I started going to St Joe when my kids were 4 & 5 and they are now 17 & 18. I have stayed at this hotel every summer. It has been in a steady down slide for years. Every year it is a little shabbier, a little dirtier. When it went from Holiday Inn to The Inn at St Joe I venture a guess that the owner was told 'clean it up or lose our name' and they chose to lose the name. When Clarion took it over a few years back, I was hoping for a big remodel. Not to be the case. All this being said, I wouldn't stay anywhere else. It's like going on a cruise and complaining about the size of the room. You're missing the point of the trip. GET OUT OF THE HOTEL! Why would you even want to eat in the hotel when their are so many great restaurants within walking distance. One poster complained there is no outside pool. Silver Beach is why people go to St. Joe - not to swim at the hotel pool! The pool is a good fall back for families with kids on rainy days or night time. Let me state again - the hotel is lacking...but for families, based on it's location...it is the best. Everything is walking distance - the shops, the children's museum, the restaurants, the beach...well, ok, if you have little kids, drive to the beach - but you can easily walk there. In my opinion, people chosing the Holiday Inn Express, which is down the road about 10 minutes by car, because it's cleaner/newer are putting too much emphasis on the ROOM and not on enjoying St. Joe. The staff was pleasant all throughout the hotel. The room was clean and comfortable enough. The hallways (on the fifth floor anyway) were extremely hot and stuffy, as were the extremely slow elevators. The halls and elevator were also considerably more dirty than the rest of the hotel. Probably because it was too darned hot in them to stay in there long enough to clean! Overall, for the price and location, I found it to be a good deal. When we checked in we asked if there was a room available with the view of the Lake Michigan. She told us there was, the room wasn't ready so we went ahead and made the reservation with the assigned room and when we came back to check in she (hotel clerk) had changed the room but told us it also had a view, a view of the other buildings no lake in sight. It was only for one night but we will stay somewhere else if we go back to St.Jo . Silver Beach is beautiful. We had never been to Lake Michigan and didn't realize we had such nice beaches so close to home.

Reserved room and requested a lake view room over two months ago. When we checked in we had to "convince" the representative that we were getting what we asked for. Upon entry to our room I explored the previous reviewed complaints. Shower head was EYE LEVEL- I'm a 5'6" female. Patched holes in through the wall paper throughout the room. Old old room, furniture, decor, t.v., bed, carpet, sink & shower. Pulled back the bedding-yellow stains all over-no joking. Complained to hotel management and they were VERY courteous and apologetic. They offered an upgraded room. Same bedding stains in the upgraded room-no lie. Cleaning staff seemed as perplexed as to the source of the stains and said many/all the sheets seem to have them and they've repeatedly told management. They remedied the problem by providing brand new sheets-straight out of the package...again very accommodating. At this point we settled because we had a wedding to get to within the hour. The upgraded room had a semi-updated bathroom with a fancy paint job, lighting fixture, beveled door mirror, OLD as heck shower head (plastic sunbeam brand that had two speeds-harsh and ouch with no water pressure), and ceramic tile. Tub itself is still old (rust stained, cracks in caulk and grout) and the sink and tub both backed up with water. The "view" is an absolute joke. I had to look for the river in order to find it. You basically have a great view of the parking lot, so it's a good bonus if you want to watch your car closely. The "complimentary" breakfast is a bagel, mini muffin, or stale cereal stored in tupperware containers. Great chandalier and furniture upgrades in the lobby-but as said earlier grossly misrepresents the rest of the building. Sports bar is very cool. All the t.v.s get really bad reception. The towels are bought in bulk and it is very apparent (sand paper). The don't give you very many towels and remind you to use the ones you have very wisely because they are "going green".....(or cheap.) If you're just looking for a place to lie your head for a few hours this place works. If you're looking for anything new, modern, or exceptionally clean-move on. Thornton's breakfast rocks-they're around the corner from the hotel. Definitely check them out. Town and people seem very nice-this is strictly a reflection of the hotel. Again, very friendly and nice staff. Can't review the pool, didn't have time to visit it. My family (wife, kids-10, 8, 7) planned to stay here for 2 nights after reading the recent reviews and seeing the hotel's website. We had never been to St. Joseph and thought we would check out the town for a few days. The exterior of the hotel screams "Old Holiday Inn, Old Clarion, Old Best Western!" or some other outdated mid-priced hotel. The check in was fine, front desk people were nice and no problems checking in early. Lobby was okay, it looked like the owners were trying to make the place look nice but it just seemed dated and stale rather than old and charming. We reserved a suit and again it reminded me of an outdated, mid-priced Holiday Inn from 20 years ago. Not terrible, but a fresh coat of paint and nice bed linens don't cover up dated furniture, small tv, old cabinets and a stale smell in the room. Again, nothing horrible, just nothing special. When we found out the indoor pool was out of order, we decided to look elsewhere. The indoor pool for the kids was one of the main reasons we chose this hotel. I will say that the desk clerk was very pleasant when I told them that we were not staying and he did not charge us for the night's stay since we checked in only 3 hours earlier. We agreed to charge my credit card a $50.00 "cleaning fee" since we did use some towels in the room. Overall, not a bad hotel (I have been in much worse) but a little disappointing. I think the website makes it look much nicer than it actually is. We drove to New Buffalo, found a room at the Grand Harbor Hotel for the same price. If you want to check out this area of Michigan, I would suggest New Buffalo over St. Joes. We were looking for a dog friendly hotel in St. Joseph and had stayed here once years ago so we booked a king jacuzzi suite for our anniversary. Really should have checked the reviews first! Our room is huge but has a weird smell to it. The bed is HORRIBLE and there are holes in the blankets and the pillows are awful. This is supposed to be one of the nicest rooms in the hotel and I would swear that the towels are at least 10 years old. And when we asked housekeeping to just give us fresh towels instead of cleaning the room she apologized that she only had white towels, not the "fancy" ones from the room! The hot tub is huge and works great. Besides the smell the room seems very clean. The staff seems unprofessional but friendly. But I find it ridiculous that I am paying $149 per night plus an extra$25 per night to have my dog here. It's an off weekend in September and so run down-really not worth this much money. Now all that said it's dog friendly and that's not so easy to find here. If you are traveling with your dog I say this place is fine for a night or two. Just up the road there is a park called Hagar Beach that allows dogs. We had a great time playing with our dog and swimming there. When we checked in they told us 1 of the rooms booked (namely the room with the hot tub) was unavailable because the walls had been scraped and the hot tub didn't work. Another suitable room was found but had only 1 king size bed, the original room had 2 separate beds. We also found the hotel to be dirty and the tub did not drain nor did the toilet flush. On the day we were to check out a shouting match ensued because the girl that checked us in the first night in did not charge us for 1 of the rooms, when it was time to leave at 6:30 am 3 days later the desk clerk assumed we were lying not realizing that it was the desk clerks fault . I realize people probably do try to pull the wool over their eyes but I wasn't one of them and didn't like being treated like a criminal. The attached photo is the view from our room. When I checked in I had the impression that the staff really didn't care about the hotel and with what I observed that evening I can see why. What I assume to be a manager there was yelling at the front desk clerk about something right in front of all the guests. I found this to be very unprofessional. The next morning when I came down for breakfast there were stains all over the tablecloths and the food containers looked like they hadn't been washed. When I asked the young gentleman about the state of affairs he informed me, in not so many words, that it wasn't his job to change table cloths or wash dishes. Besides the fact of the dirty food containers the food looked like it had seen better days and the napkins that they place under the juice container to catch the drips looks tacky. You would think for the price this hotel is charging they could have something a little better to catch the drips on. The rest of the hotel was alright considering its age and it does look like there is some remodeling going on. Okay, I stayed at the Clarion Hotel during Art fair weekend in St Joseph. It was the only hotel open for a wedding we were attending in the area. We paid $150 a night and it was NOT worth it, even with a nice view of the lake. My husband put it best when he said, "It was probably a really nice hotel 20 years ago." The hotel is old! The tile was chipping in the the bathroom, all the rooms and hallways had a strang odor like mixed cleaning fumes, and the carpets were stained every where! I didn't want to walk barefoot on the carpet. Don't get me wrong, the staff was friendly and the rooms were clean, but the hotel needs some major updating. I didn't want to spend any time in my room due to the odor and the horrible King mattress that was broke down in the middle. It looked like a V and my husband and I kept rolling into each other in the middle of the bed. To make matters even worse the hotel was booked up and there was only one elevator working in the entire hotel for all 7 floors. Sometime had to wait 15 mintues for the elevator. Of course, we were on the top floor and ended up getting our exercise. I recommend skipping this hotel and pay a little more to stay at the Boulevard Inn. We spent only one night in the Clarion. In all fairness, I have given this hotel a 2, based solely on the location and attitude of the staff. The location is excellent for shopping and the beach. The staff were great, especially considering what they have to work with. Were I to rate only the hotel, I would give it less than one. This hotel is in dire need of some serious renovation! It is my understanding from talking to the staff that some renovation has taken place and more is scheduled. However, until such time that the management brings this to fruition, I would definitely not recommend this hotel. I was excited to stay at the Silver Beach Hotel. I'm originally from St. Joseph, and many of my friends from home said that the hotel was completely renovated, and looking great. I had contact with the manager, James, early on. I wasn't going to be arriving to the hotel until 3 am, and he gave me a discount for the first night so that I wouldn't have to pay as much for half a night. James had me thinking that my stay would be fantastic.. as he was fantastic! My boyfriend and I arrived to the hotel around 4 am, after a full day of flying and driving. James had promised me a lakeview room. The woman at the counter said there weren't any lakeview rooms available, and that there was nothing she could do about it. I showed her my email from James which clearly stated that I would have a lakeview. After about 20 minutes, she somehow all of a sudden found a room with a view. We were on the 7th floor which was fine with me. When the elevator door opened to our floor, we walked out onto VERY dirty and old school green carpet. I couldn't believe how dirty it was. We entered our room, and at first glance it seemed to be satisfactory. As we prepared for bed, we realized that our bed didn't even have a comforter. No comforter in the winter in Michigan makes for a verrrry long night. The bed consisted of a sheet, then a light thermal tan blanket, then another plain sheet. That was it! It was nice that they added a small balcony area to each room, but the balcony was dirty and not appealing. The next morning, I needed to get online to check my work email. In order to log onto the wi-fi, you needed to get a password and login name from the front desk. After calling the front desk for over 20 minutes with no answer, I decided to go downstairs, still in my pajamas, to get the information. The front desk clerk was apparently too busy with her boyfriend to answer the phone.. Later that afternoon, we got in the elevator to leave. The elevator went down one floor to pick up another customer, then down another floor. At the second stop, two of the hotels house keeping crew got into the elevator with us.. I think thats VERY unprofessional. It became even more unprofessional when one woman leaned up against the corner of the elevator, and started cussing about how bad her teeth hurt. The other housekeeping man jumped right on into the conversation, so that we would know how miserable he was as well. By the 4th night of our stay, we were still using the same 2 towels that we had when we arrived. Our room was never even serviced! If you're one of those people that care about location rather then professionalism, service, and overall care of a hotel, then this place is for you. Unfortunately for me, I like to sleep with a comforter on my bed, I demand good service, and professionalism is a must. Pay the extra $30 a night and stay at the Boulevard Inn downtown St. Joseph.. The location is better, and it's professional! That's for sure where I will stay next time. Old, musty, tacky......etc. I am not sure were to start with how terrible this hotel is. The thing that makes it even worse is the front desk people were soooooo nice. Please do not that fool you into to booking a room. Go somewhere else!!!!!!!!! A total fire trap...elevators stick between floors...electrical and plumbing that does not work, and maintenance of critical equipment is performed by cleaning staff. Numerous safety violations exist, but owners use duct tape and paint to attempt to correct leaks. Buckets fall out of ceilings when they overflow with the drips. Prices fluctuate up to $199 per room, with ventilators and ac equipment that does not work....excuses..excuses are all you will hear from staff, except when they are screaming at each other in the halls. This place should be condemned. I have photos, but not worth the time to post. We have been going to this location for many years. It used to be a Holiday Inn, then St. Joseph Hotel, then a Clarion...We watched this hotel go "down hill" after a few years as the Clarion...We selected this hotel even with problems, simple because of its very convenient location. However, location is no longer important when everything else is horrible. Stained linens, bedspread..EK!, bathtubs that don't drain, toilets with broken seats, etc....Additionally, the last couple of times that we were there, one or the other elevators were not working. But the last time, two children under 11 years of age were stuck in an elevator. The staff did nothing (no call to Chicago owner nor call to the fire department). Guests were infuriated. Breakfast??? Forget it! Cost! Outlandish! There too many problems with this hotel. We are no longer a client. I stepped into this hotel this past September. Please, do not let the Lobby area deceive you...the problems are still there. Remember, this is NO LONGER a Clarion Hotel... I have been staying as this motel for 5 years, one or two weekends a year and it has gone way down hill since the last visit. I was receintly married so we decided to take a short honeymoon before our trip to California. Here is a list of what we encountered- -hairdryer did not work -comforter had large holes in it -The bedframe stuck out 5-6" past the mattress and my wife gouged her shin on it and went through a lot of pain and bleeding -The jacuuzi was not properly cleaned. -Water stains on the ceiling. -Crappy patches on the wallpaper to cover holes. - Bathtub would barely drain so you had the pleasure of standing in 6" of dirty water. I spoke directly to the staff at the front desk about the issues that needed to be addressed and was told that it would be taken care of right away. We left for the day and here we are at 6:00 pm and nothing has been touched. Oh, do not ask the staff for anything like a replacement hairdryer or and ashtray all you get is lip service. The room was 179:00$ per night and I had to pay up front!!!!! Now I know why-everyone would leave after the first night. Totally ruined our short honeymoon-BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!! The website for this hotel is so misleading! When we finally found the hotel (You can't read the sign @ night because they flipped the Clairion Inn sign over to write Silver Beach Inn) the looks of the place made me cringe. The staff @ the front desk looked like they were taking turns running to the bar and coming back to the desk . As we were checking in the music was spilling out from the lounge/bar and the women behind the desk were doing the "Tootsie-roll" while we were waiting to get our room. (Not very appealing). They were not professional and were dressed like they were going bar-hopping...in ghetto bars! The room was disgusting and it's scary to think of the things on the comforter - which was covered in cigarette burns. Please drive a few more miles away from the beach to have a decent stay. This hotel is absolutely terrible! Don't let the new lobby and great location decieve you!! We stayed here after a day on the wine trail and we're still recovering from the back pain those awful beds caused. The room was dirty, sheets were stained, there was a hole in the bathroom door and the shower head was about 3 feet too low- we had to duck down to wash our hair! We so badly wish that this hotel was even remotely tolerable because of the perfect location in St. Joe's, but after that last stay we will NEVER stay here again!! So please do yourself a favor... STAY AWAY! I gave it 1 because I couldn't find a way to give it zero or a minus number. Forget the location; it ain't cheap and it's grungy and it's run by the cleaning staff. The following are just some of our experiences at the Silver Beach Hotel in St Joe MI recently 7/07: - Upon arrival we were told our room was ready, by the time we brought our luggage in we were told that our room had been given to someone else and we would have to now wait in the lobby with all our luggage. - When we finally got into the 2 rooms we had booked we found that the beds were absolutely horrible to try to sleep on - The housekeepers did not clean our room even after our personal intructions to do so - The hotel only had 2 extra pillows to give us even tho we only had 2 pillows for three beds - The lobby in the hotel is nice but the owner is aloof and condescending - counting his $ at the front desk, in sight of all - The dumpter outside was overflowing with bags of trash twice its capacity - the hotel only has 1 ice machine on one floor of 8 floors - there is no ventelation or AC in any of the hallways.... - I could go on - All in all this was the worse hotel experience I have ever had, and I will never set foot inside that hotel again ! I was doing the wonderful art show (Krasl) here and decided to split the room with a good friend of mine. She had already booked this room well in advance and couldn't cancel. I had already had a reservation at the Hampton down at exit 23 (for much less.. $74 a night) and could cancel mine, which I did. WHAT A MISTAKE! Upon my arrival, she had informed me she had to move 3 times before finding a suitable room.... suitable?? Suitable for $152 a night?? Your kidding right...? well.. The one she found suitable had a broken bed, stained sheets, dirty towels and a foul stale smoke smell. Room 306 She said if I didn't like it we could try moving again.... I thought the whole place was a wreck... no need. The only thing this place has is location, so if you plan on staying outside and have alot to drink (alcohol that is)maybe you won't notice it too much. BTW..She's still my friend This place has issues and it is very dirty. New management trying to get the place in order but the offerings are very deceptive. Don't book the rooms with hot tubs, the tubs are disgusting. Room 225 was so bad they upgraded us to the presidental suite, big room, non working plumbing in the bar, frig was unplugged, no hot tub, drain in tub backs up but they only charged me $100.00 for two nights. This can be a nice hotel if they ever get it together. If you are looking for a hotel in St. Joseph, MI, PLEASE spend a little extra money and stay at a different hotel! I was in St. Joseph for a wedding this weekend and stayed here because it was an option for our wedding's block. If I would have known what the hotel was like, I would have spend a little more money to stay somewhere with some class. This used to be a Clarion hotel, and I can see why Clarion no longer wants to be associated with this hotel. First of all, the hotel wasn't even labeled with the Clarion name nor the Silver Beach hotel name. Not until we drove around back and saw "parking for Clarion hotel guests only" did we figure out this was our hotel. The hotel lost the reservation of one of my friends. One of the elevators was broke when we checked in, and by the time we checked out the next day, both elevators were broke and we had to use the stairs that didn't even connect to the hotel lobby (they only went outside, and you would have to walk outside to get back to the lobby.) The room itself was crappy. There was a dried worm on the ceiling, the TV wasn't clear, there were other guests' receipts on the floor, the bathroom had mold on the ceiling, the tub had mildew around the edges, and the beds were uncomfortable. And I can't forget the yelling of the staff at 8am down the hallway at the top of their lungs. Do not stay at this hotel--spend your money elsewhere! The location is good, but the hotel is in pretty bad shape. The free breakfast was a joke. The staff was not that friendly. You are better off staying someplace else for the money. Brochure says Hotel is completely renovated. We found a Hotel that needs urgently to be renovated. The photos in the brochure do not show the reality. The continental breakfast is a robbery, friendly speaking. There isn't any place you can even sit down and enjoy a breakfast and start your day. Save your money and have a nice breakfast in one of the very nice caffee very close to the Clarion. The rooms are acceptable but close your eyes on your way to your room. Not one of the ice machines was working on any floor. We have been traveling with two kids and and we will never ever put one foot again in this what tehy call a hotel. St. Joseph is very nice but the next time we are using an RV. This hotel has not been kept up at all. All of the rooms on our floor had no smoking signs on them, but when we stepped off the elevator you could see the smoke. One room had there door open with chain smokers sitting in there. When asked about this we were told that the rooms had been changed to smoking but the signs had not been taken off the doors yet.The hallways and door were dingy and dirty. We had to fix the toilet after it was flushed each time. The ice machines were not working on at least two floors and our daughter had medicine that required refrigeration. We booked two nights there but only stayed one. The deal breaker was when we returned to our room for the third time after 3:00 this time to find our room still not made up. The maids had been on our floor since 11:00. The only positive thing I can say is that the staff is very friendly. We ended up at the Holiday Inn Express, it was wonderful. The Clarion St Joseph is one of the worst hotels in which I have ever stayed. It was dirty, many things were broken, and our room was infested with spiders. I am NOT exaggerating. We would have sought a different hotel, but it was 11pm when we arrived and we were traveling with a young child. Save your money and stay at a Super 8, or for the same price stay at the Holiday Inn Express Saint Joseph.
