Having read most of the reviews here before we traveled, we were expecting this hotel to be awful. It wasn't! The staff were friendly, the room was clean and comfortable and the restaurant served good, honest food at a very reasonable price. The surrounding country is what we were there for and to spend any more time than necessary in a hotel is to miss the point of being in this part of Arizona. That said, we had a good night's rest here and feel that the hotel is very different to what we expected. It was good, and close enough to Monument Valley to be able to see sunset and sunrise there comfortably with one overnight stay.

we allways stop in kayenta on our annual motor cycle trip to usa and have allways stopped at the best western where the staff are unfreindly and the rooms very small and commercial, and no resurant we decided to try somewhere different this time and glad we did.the holiday inn is the best, freindly staff, excellent clean rooms with aview across the desert and mountains, nice pool and sunbathing area, has its own resturant which is a must in this area,i cannot understand how we have missed this hotel in the past, proberbly thought it would be expensive but when you compare it with the best western its about $40 cheaper for a far better place I've always found Holiday Inns good value places to stay but the quality can be variable. The Holiday Inn in Kayenta however is one of their gems, and I can only heap praise on the hotel, it's staff, and it's facilities. the room we were given was excellent, spotlessly clean, full facilities, two big comfortable beds, good air conditioning which is vital in that part of Arizona. Plentiful free parking also was available with a convenient gas station next door. The real star of the hotel was it's restaurant, which offered huge, and I mean the biggest I'd ever seen portions of good home style American fare, plus a side menu of Navaho and other South Western specialties. I strongly recommend the Fry Bread, ribs, and Chuck Wagon Stew. One point i will make, the Holiday Inn is regularly used by coach parties going to Monument Valley, this was not a problem for us but I know for some this could be a problem with groups being herded around the lobby, restaurant and car park. In summation a great incredible value gem of a hotel. Our confirmed reservations were for a king bed, and I contacted the inn directly (the same morning) to confirm that we were assigned a downstairs room because my husband has a disability that prohibits him from navigating steps. Upon arrival, I found we were assigned upstairs and no king rooms were available downstairs, only double beds. However, the rate was reduced significantly to offset the problem. The customer service was excellent; the front desk was very friendly and nice while working through the problem. We had an excellent large room, very comfortable and clean, with soft, fluffy towels. The onsite restaurant is also very good. We ate dinner there, had excellent service; the food was very good and they have a salad bar. As someone else mentioned, we did encounter someone accosting the customers and begging. I reported this to the front desk and they immediately took action. We booked via the internet and for $89 got breakfast and dinner plus free wireless internet. The room was clean and warm. The staff were all very friendly and the food from the restaurant was fresh and home cooked. We have now been traveling the US for 6 weeks and rate this place as the best overall value for money we have experienced. We arrived at the hotel 2.1/2 hours early but decided to try, the very pleasant lady on reception rang room service to see if room was ready, it was and we were booked in immediately. We were booked for 2 nights and had breakfast and evening meals both days, the breakfast was only average but the evening meals were excelant and good value for money. The room was large with 2 queen beds as requested and very comfortable. Having read a few negative revues I was very pleasantly surprised and and would not hesitate to reccommend this hotel to anybody. The Holiday Inn at Kayenta is a good location for exploring Monument Valley and surrounding areas. This motel is clean and has comfortable beds, it also has a very good restaurant with a balanced menu. The staff are friendly and helpful. We stayed for 2 nights and the only problem was the German tourists in the next room who had a party on the second night that went on until one in the morning, not the fault of the motel. I was traveling on a 4 day photo trip through the western united states. Our room here was dated in accomedations but it was clean and to me that is all that mattered. We did have problems with the door that were never resolved but before departing I had learned the Navajo door trick so it was no longer an issue. We stopped here on our way to the Grand Canyon. Hadn't planned to stay in Kayenta, but it was a good place to stop after a long day of driving. Our room was on the ground floor and spacious. The bathroom was small with a low ceiling, but they've upgraded the showerhead and the towels were decent. The bed was comfortable and had four nice pillows. Open beam ceiling and brick walls, some older decor, but a clean, comfortable room. The wireless connection was great! Nice outdoor pool with privacy fencing. Across from McDonalds and Burger King. The best grub in town is probably at the Hampton Inn just down the street. Having stayed here over ten years ago and knowing how Holiday Inns can be iffy, I was tentative about staying here. Since we hadn't made a reservation and this was what was left available in the area I was even more skeptical. However, my two discerning children were quite pleased as was I. The room was clean, cozy and the beds were comfortable. The bathrooms don't have the "new granite" but so what. The shower works the same and was just as cleanas the "granite counter top baths. We had a great stay looking out to the mesa behind us. We stayed here on our way to Canyon de Chelly. We stayed in Kayenta instead of Chinle because the hotel was half the price. Because we have two dogs, the hotel in Chinle wanted to charge us an extra $50.00, and the room in Kayenta was only $55.00. When we checked in, they changed our room once they realized we had dogs. Usually the "dog" rooms at hotels are in pretty bad shape, so I was prepared for the worst, but the room was nice and the staff were all very nice. Room service was a little slow, but they said they were short-staffed. Stayed here for two days, Sept. 18 and 19. I read all of the reviews prior to arriving and was prepared for an uncomfortable and dingy hotel. This couldn't be the same property. The lobby was huge, always busy and the staff was quite friendly. Our room was in the new wing and the bed was really comfortable. The better half is a member of the Holiday Inn Preferred club and we got a free serving of Navajo Fry Bread. The cleaning staff was very prompt and did a great job with our room. We were on the second floor and our building didn't have any elevators. The cleaning staff had to carry all the linens up and down an external staircase, but everything was fresh and clean in our room. I will agree that Kayenta does have some rough edges, but I felt perfectly safe at our hotel. We arrived Sept 6th, was rainy and cloudy, but the staff was very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the nites stay. The dinner and breakfast coupons were an appreciated bonus and was the deciding factor in staying. Will stay again and will recommend to others. We stayed at this hotel as part of a fly drive tour and found it to be fine. The check in staff were friendly and courteous. The breakfast was included in the rate and we thought it was going to be donuts muffins and coffee but were pleasantly surprised at bacon, eggs and breakfast potatoes. Not only that but fruit, juices, cereals, pastries, bagels and more besides! The pool was closed for refurbishment when we stayed but we didnt book for the pool so were not that bothered. The rooms were large and airy, bathroom was also nice with a good shower. We did see three stray dogs out and about but they did not bother us and were not agressive in any way. Kayenta itself is tiny, and as someone else mentioned there is not much to do or see (although it is only a short drive to monument valley which is the reason we chose it) There is a very nice small pizza establishment there which we went to (the bread sticks are to die for!) which I would recommend although I would say there is no fine dining in Kayenta!. All in all we enjoyed our stay. On another note: if you go to Monument Vallley it is well worth the $5 entrance fee to drive through the valley (in the Navajo reservation area) we were led to believe that you had to go on a four wheel drive tour with the native americans (and at $50 each we thought that was a bit steep) or that you needed a four wheel drive to drive yourself. This is not so! We had a hire car (a Pontiac Grand Prix) and drove round the unmade road with no problems - yes its a bit bumpy but I'm sure it would be in a four wheel drive car! The scenery is stunning and was definately a hightlight of our tour! Would recommend this hotel and dont miss out Monument Valley Drive! I was honestly expecting this hotel to be the worst on our 2 week road trip, just due to its remote location, however it was actually one of the best! The room we were given was huge, 2 king beds and it was spotlessly clean. Unofrtunately, I am unable to comment on the resturant as we never ate there (had a great meal at the resturant at Monument Valley - recommend the Chilli!!) Overall, we found this to be a very comfortable one night stay! We opted to stay here after seaching the internet and finding all other accomodation booked. 25 miles from Monument Valley which was awesome, especially at sunset and we drove around the 17 mile route in our normal hire car (Not 4 x 4). There is no need to take the tour, you can do it yourself, its easy to do. The hotel was clean and tidy and the rooms very good and our pre booking went without a hitch although the receptionist was not the friendliest of people! However, the staff in the restarant were excellent and I would thoroughly recommend ordering the good sized packed lunch and a very reasonable price for your drive the next day. Whislt Kayenta itself isn't up to much what do you expect in the middle of no where! It was an experience. We (myself and two kids) stayed at the Holiday Inn Kayenta for one night, 29th October, to visit Monument Valley. We wanted to book Goulding’s Lodge, but it wasn’t available on our tour. As it happens, apart from a short drive it wasn’t any better sited than the place we booked, so we lost nothing. Our Satnav, didn’t have the H.I. on the database, but we needn’t have worried, Kayenta, is about the size of an English village, and we found the H.I. on the main highway through it. We arrived mid afternoon, and checked in very easily. The H.I. group operates a ‘kids eat free’ policy, but I didn’t realise to take advantage of this you needed vouchers, and the receptionist didn’t give us any, but more on that later. We headed the 25 miles to the valley that evening and caught sunset, taking our pictures, and then back to the Inn. The room was clean and comfortable, and secure. You needed a room key to get into the block you were in. The pool was sadly closed although the sun was blistering. The weather was unseasonably good, but we were disappointed they hadn’t reacted to that by keeping the facility open. Distressing, was the large number of stray dogs and occasional coyote that wandered around, particularly at night. I’ve no idea whether this was peculiar to the H.I. or Kayenta and the desert in general. Kayenta Dining options seemed limited so we opted to eat at the hotel, and went into the restaurant. It was a little stark, being a cross between a diner, and a south-western roadhouse. We were the first there, although it did fill a little behind us, and by the time we’d eaten there was a line for tables, even though it was less than a third full. I took a bowl of chilli which I love, and the kids menu and activities sorted out my two. Being dry because it was on tribal lands, I had a surprisingly good non alcoholic beer, and we all shared our only Diné dish of the trip, some Navaho fried bread. Both tasty and filling, it was a cross between the fried bread I ate when I lived in Hong Kong, and the flat breads you get in the Middle East. It was only after I’d signed for the bill and left the restaurant, I’d realised I’d paid for the kids. I went back in and had to wait for five minutes in line to be told to go to reception to get vouchers. Another five minute in line later, I was given some vouchers - including the breakfast next day, and then had a further five minutes in line to get the bill re-worked. I noticed when this was done that everything had been reduced accordingly except the gratuity - not too shabby!! Next day we were up before the sun and off to Monument Valley again, but came back for breakfast. This was much better. The restaurant was full and there was more of an atmosphere. I took the buffet and the kids had pancakes. All were good, and the day staff seemed a deal more cheerful. No issues with check out and we left to head on to St Georges. The rooms were clean and comfortable but I thought the price was a bit high. What annoyed me most was the price of breakfast and dinner which I found expansive regarding to the quality and the service was quite slow... In the morning it was a bit noisy because some buses had their motor running pretty early.... If you can stay somewhere else, give it a try! After a long drive we arrived at Kayenta. On arriving at the front desk we were bluntly told the rooms were not ready until 3pm, ok but what do you do in the middle of nowhere? it would have been nice if the receptionist had given us some options i.e use the swimming pool, go for a coffee but nothing. eventually we were allowed our room. On finding it there were a few people hanging around outside, music on loud it was ok as they were staff fixing something or another. The door to the room had seen better days. On the whole we found our stay here suitable for a one night stay. The food was great and the staff in the food hall good. The only real negative here that we found was there were signs all over the place saying not to feed the animals, this turned out to be dogs. I am not sure if they lived at the petrol station next to the hotel or if they were wild dogs, and they were all over the place. But just keep reminding yourself of where you are and you will appreciate all that this hotel has to offer. If you find yourself in Kayenta and heading towards the Mexican hat there is a Fantastic Native American trading post just on the hill past Monument Valley. The Native Americans that trade there were great and were more than happy to interact with us all. On Leaving them with some English money, (they wanted to know who the lady was on the coins, after telling them who it was they found it really funny that we had a Queen)and a packet of sweets from the UK we felt honored to have met such wonderful and genuine people. It was the highlight of our visit to Kayenta. Be sure to stop there. The Holiday Inn Kayenta was just ok. The room wasn't overly clean, but considering it was a smoking room it did not smell at all like smoke. The room we stayed in was large enough for us and our three sons (22, 17, 16). There was a large room with two double beds and a separate room with another double bed. The bath was split so more than one person could use it. We didn't use any of the facilities at the hotel. It worked for a place to sleep and was definitely better than sleeping in our vehicle. The rooms could use some work considering what we paid for it out in the middle of nowhere. Probably not the worst hotel I've ever been in, but certainly not the best. The Holiday Inn Kayenta is conveniently located 20 miles south of Monument Valley in Navajo Country. Aside from the great location, we liked the style of the building and the fact that it had a large (but crowded) pool. We had a spacious family suite with three double beds. The beds themselves were new and comfortable. The facilty itself is a little aged and not picture perfect clean, even though it was still on an acceptable level for us. We did not like the fact that it was the only hotel on a 2 week road trip where a continental breakfast was not included and overall, the value for the money was just ok. The Holiday Inn Kayenta profits from its great location and the alternate options in that city are about the same price. We stayed one night in this hotel in July. The previous 2 nights had been spent in Tusayan at the Grand Canyon, so our general expectations were pretty low having experienced a previous 'tourist hotspot'. The room was clean, light and a reasonable size although not luxurious. We were by the door - maintenance need to learn how to adjust the dampers! Thank goodness for earplugs. Fitness room was good & public areas were OK. The restaurant was fine if your standards are low. I had some kind of Mexican dish that frankly tasted like cardboard. It was also stuck to the plate and dry. Looked like it had been there some time. I left an inappropriately high tip with the cash desk, and waited an embarrasing length of time to hear the words 'thank you'. Unfortunately I became bored before the glum looking person facing me did, and left. If only he'd listened on the training course. Kayenta is a grim place - just a few filling stations and hotels. Nothing there, or at the hotel, to detain you any longer than the trip to Monument Valley, which is possibly one of the most photogenic places in the World. So, yes, go to Monument Valley, stay in Kayenta, and the Holiday Inn is OK. Just. Our family spent one night in a family suite at the Holiday Inn in Kayenta. This motel is about 25 miles south of Monument Valley. The motel offers free breakfast and dinner for the kids as long as a paying adult accompanies them. If you are passing through to visit Monument Valley, this is one of the few choices for a place to stay. The Hampton Inn is newer and probably a better choice, but there was no availability for us at the time of our visit. The room was pretty clean, but dated! The bed was ok. It was a bit uncomfortable for me and my wife, but the kids had no problems with them. The shower was good. The walls are not insulated well and noise travels between rooms - need I say more?? If you are a heavy sleeper then you won't mind. If I had to, I would stay there again, but it would not be my first choice. Nice hotel located at 10 minutes from Monument Valley park. Rooms are very nice and clean and are made with bricks. The restaurant is correct. Our room was pretty big and was very clean. It was really quiet at night too. The bathroom was also clean and in working order! Parking was free and there was plenty of space. There was also free wi-fi. There was a restaurant too which was fine, although nothing special if you have other options! My only complaint was that I found it a little expensive given its location and the "motel" style of hotel. We stayed here one night on the way to Monument Valley. We had two rooms booked on the ground floor, as one of our group is in a wheelchair. We pulled up around 10:30 pm and they said there is no more accessible rooms nor ground floor. Needless to say we were disappointed to have to carry our group member up two flights of stairs, when the parking lot looked only 1/4 full. Our second room was in a totally different building. We booked a suite with two bedrooms, but was told that there were none of these rooms left when we arrived and were told to pay full price for two separate rooms, which was more than the suite. We ended up having some sleep on the floor and refused to pay the extra rate for the extra room. We thought we should've received the 2 rooms for the rate of the suite we booked. Anyways, in the morning, it pays to go in and complain to the manager about the bad night service, because our bill was cut in half. We really appreciated that. The room was very old, but it served the purpose of a place to stay near a tourist attraction, so the price was ok. Would either check in earlier next time when I know a manager is on duty in case this happens again or would stay elsewhere. This is a tired Holiday Inn in a pretty remote and run down town, but it does provide an adequate base for a night's stopover. It is very popular due to it's proximity to monument valley so book early. Worth putting up with average hotel to see the amazing Monument Valley....don't miss it and make sure you splash out on the overpriced but fantastic Jeep tours with the freindly Navajo guides...you'll not regret it. We were visiting Monument Valley and drove through Kayenta where we wanted to spend the night. The first hotel 'Best Western" which is closer to Monument Valley had some rooms available but they were very dark and appeared rather unattractive. We then drove back to the town and were quite pleased with the room at "Holiday Inn". The service at the front desk was somewhat indifferent. The room rate at "Holiday Inn" was the same as at "Best Western", around $100 per night for double occupancy, king size bed. The room was bright and clean. Unfortunately, the highspeed internet connections were down and the swimming pool was closed. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, the food was adequate, 7 on a 10 point scale. The service there was okay. This is possibly the most expensive Holiday Inn in which I have stayed. However if you are going to stay in Kayenta, there are only three choices and they are all expensive. The staff was friendly and helpful. Room was clean and large. I did not eat at the restaurant. Be prepared for 19% hotel tax wherever you stay in Kayenta, Recently stayed for one night at this establishment. Received a good walk-in rate which included breakfast. Our room looked a bit tired, but was clean and comfortable enough. It was, however, freezing cold and took a long while to heat up. With temperatures below freezing outside and snow blizzards, it would have been nice not to have to wait ages to thaw out. Having said that, it is only a short drive to Monument Valley, which is just as well because there is next to nothing to do in Kayenta. Would recommend this hotel only as a one-night stopover. The hotel was good : you have an ATM, a gift shop and a restaurant ... The room was clean, and the food was good. No access to Internet. The service was not very friendly, but it doesn't matter if you spend only one night here ... Cheaper than Goulding's Lodge, which is not so better ... May 1, 2005 Older Holiday Inn hotel. Rooms are nothing special, but ours was clean and appointed with the things you would expect. The dining room was nice with friendly service and ok food...nothing special, but not bad. The location of the facility is ideal-- at the turn off to Monument Valley. Maybe not as central as Gouldings Lodge (22 miles up the road in Monument Valley itself) but I have stayed there too, and the price difference is worth the 22 miles) Summer time pool wasn't open yet...still a bit early. Friendly Front Desk staff.

We wanted something close to Monument Valley. No other choice but this hotel (thus captive tourist). Hampton was booked. Exterior was dirty, debris on the parking lot, and in bushes by the steps. Hotel in dire need of maintenence. Our room... dirty carpet with a huge stain by the bathroom door. Front desk staff needs to be a little more friendly. Gift shop had nice things, lady running the shop was very nice. Food in restaurant was below average. Judging by this hotel, Holiday Inn does not have enforced standards for their hotels. We will not bother going to any Holiday Inn again. The Holiday Inn Kayenta was good for its distance to Monument Valley. But the smell in the room was awful. It smelled moldy and of stale cigarette smoke although it was suppose to be a non-smoking room. In addition, the internet would not work. Had to call a 800 number. They checked and said it was out in our wing. Also that no one there knows how to reset it, so it would be the next day before someone could come and fix it. I had to take allergy pills. I was glad to get out of there. I usually like Holiday Inns but this one was the pits. Stayed in a family suite, which had louvre doors on the bathroom and a bedroom door that didn't shut, there were no net curtains so as we had a window looking straight down the car park the curtains needed to be shut all the time the soundproofing was non-existent, there was snoring from next door and the airconditioning from upstairs, you could hear the traffic from the road as well. Unfortunately we had room 155 which is just by the stairs so everyone would reverse up, slam and bang doors to get their luggage in and out and lug up the stairs. We could also see the people who were begging by the shops during the daytime that had moved to the garage just down from the hotel, they hung about all night so didn't feel particularly secure there. The staff were fine, I didn't eat at the hotel restaurant. After staying in a couple of very good Holiday Inns this one, although average was a disappointment - the hotel is slightly jaded and 'felt' dusty. Our room was right next to the car park so privacy was limited. I had to ask for the toilet to be cleaned because the outside of the bowl was very soiled. Dinner in the restaurant was Ok if you were really hungry but there wasn't really an alternative. The gift shop was worth a visit. I would avoid this hotel in future Stayed here because Gouldings Lodge was full & we were spending a couple of days in Monument Valley. Hotel was easy to find. We were allocated our first room, drove over & dragged our cases up the stairs only to find our key didn't work. I went back to reception, who weren't especially interested, and sent the maintenance man whose response was that the door lock had been broken for some time on that room. They didn't have any more non-smoking rooms available in the refurbished block, so I had to agree to a swap to an older room ... cue dragging of cases back to car (with no offers of help from staff). Next room was ok, big and clean but the windows were small & overlooked the glamorous car park - so it was quite dark. There really isn't anything to do in Kayenta in the evening, so we were looking forward to watching a movie (not that sort!!) but our tv was playing up as well. They looked into it but didn't know why - and although they offered to move rooms again, by then we'd unpacked and didn't fancy room no.3 There's a restaurant on-site which is convenient, & does fairly good breakfasts (not included in our rate). Dinner was more hit and miss - service was very slow indeed - on our 2nd night I'd nearly finished my main course before my drink arrived! They were slow to top up the salad bar too, which isn't good when the hotel seems to be popular with tour buses who descended upon the salad bar with great gusto ... we ate there because it was easy and options were limited. Didn't use the pool although it looked ok and some rooms overlooked it which I think would be nicer. All in all, ok and you know what you're getting but nothing to write home about and probably our least favourite hotel on our trip. PS - if you want to do an all-day M Valley tour, we found gouldings to be by far the cheapest - $80 for an all-day tour including a bbq lunch. This option with either the holiday inn, or the tour operators who wait at the visitor centre car park, would have cost about $140. gouldings told me that you don't need to book and they don't turn anyone away as long as you're there by 8.45am-ish (they leave at 9) We asked for a nice room with a view of the Monument Valley which probably was a mistake. They gave us a 2nd floor room in the new building overlooking the Valley. You are just about to see some rocks but you are also overlooking a road with fast food and shops and a big car park. It is a room with large windows and everyone in the carpark can see into your room. There is actually no privacy. There are stray dogs and a suspicious couple sitting and eating in their open van (wonder if they are guests or tramps). The swimming pool was out of order which made me wonder if it actually "exits". The 2nd floor rooms overlooking the back is probably nicer with a view of an interesting and beautiful mountain. It is a stopover if you are tired but I will give it a miss if I can help it. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Kayenta as part of a 3 week road trip in the States and for a one night base in which to visit Monument Valley. The rooms were better than expected and fine for a one night stay. We ate at the hotel's restaurant as there seemed to be no other choices nearby and the very average food was made worse by the fact a mouse ran through the restaurant in the middle of our dinner...! The hotel staff (who had been unfriendly from the offset) made no effort to move us away from the mouse or give us any refund on our meal. Eventually we had to move ourselves (and our meal) to the other side of the restaurant to avoid it running over our feet! The pool was again closed - maybe it doesn't even exist!! Kayenta itself is a dump (and because it's owned by Indians you can't even buy a beer!) so we would suggest the following: Get to Monument Valley for mid afternoon, drive the off road route round the park (amazing and a 4x4 is not needed ) and then do not stop in Kayenta for the night but carry on..It's worth driving a little further towards your next destination rather than staying here. I hope this is helpful. Have fun! The hotel is an older one, and although the room was sufficient, it could have been much better. The biggest problem was the surly attitude of the staff, both upon check-in and check-out. They acted as if they were doing us a favor by letting us stay there. The room was also the most expensive of any Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express we stayed in on a 10-day trip. At a cost of $132.00 per night, plus 19.5 percent tax, it was almost twice as much as other, much better hotels we used. The only saving grace of the hotel was the restaurant meal, which was quite good. Also, the waitress was the friendliest person we encounted in Kayenta, AZ. Given the option, I would seek another hotel before I stayed in this one. Did not sleep there but at the Hampton Inn. We tried the restaurant for a change and it was a bad idea. Much more expensive and less good than Hampton Inn. We arrived in Kayenta late one evening in October and the other hotels were booked so we decided to stay at the Holiday Inn. Though we were a little concerned that there didn't seem to be anyone else staying here (just a few cars here compared to full parking lots at other hotels), we didn't have much of an option. The hotel is fine for a one-night stay but I wouldn't want to stay much longer. The hotel was pretty clean but that's all that I can say about it. The very loud air conditioning unit kept us from keeping it on and the less-than-soundproof rooms let us in on everything that was going on around us in the morning. Not to mention the housekeepers entering the room despite the Do Not Disturb sign on the door. As I said, the hotel is fine to stay at but the restaurant should be avoided. With no other options for food when we arrived but the fast food restaurants, we opted to eat there. This had to be one of the worst meals that either of us had ever had so we barely ate what we had on our plates. It has now become an adjective in our vocabulary if something is bad...'that was so Kayenta.' Though the room was fine for an evening, I would suggest trying one of the other hotels in the area. Or, better yet, continue on to another destination. We were not offered much in the way of service at any of our stops in Kayenta and there is certainly not much to see/do in the immediate area. Continue on to Goulding where the scenery is fantastic. We were at Kayenta for one night (May 26th, 2008) on a motorbike tour. Overall it was the worst hotel we had in 2 weeks. The staff was unfriendly from the beginning. At check in (3:00 pm) 2 of 4 rooms were not ready. Only non smoking rooms had been booked, but we got 2 smoking rooms. After credit cards, money and a camera had been stolen from one room, the staff was unable or unwilling to help with the calls to cancel the credit cards (the toll free numbers were not available from the room, the internet connection was not working), we should call from the room. Next morning, they charged $250 for the calls we had to make. Worst experience I ever had in the U.S. This was just an overnight stop after visiting Monument Valley but it was one of the worst hotels I have stayed in. Rude, unfriendly staff. A barely clean room in a noisy building with little soundproofing - we were woken at 6am by slamming of doors and had no chance of getting back to sleep. We also made the mistake of eating in the restaurant due to the lack of other options and the food was not good. Mine was just about edible, but my husband's meal was rock hard spare ribs, served with stone cold mash! Would definitely avoid if doing this trip again. Of 18 nights and 8 hotels we stayed at in Arizona, this was hands down the worst. Kayenta is essentially a tourist trap, the only town reasonably close to Monument Valley. The cost for the hotel was ridiculous - $134 plus about $20 in taxes, for a barely clean, bare-bones room with views of a parking lot, dumpster and barbed wire fence. Safety was definitely a concern. The staff was worse than the hotel. Our attempt to check in 20 minutes early was met with resistance to say the least. The surly receptionist made it very clear that they would not be starting any check in procedures until 3 p.m., and suggsted that we might not be able to get into a room until 4 p.m. I find it hard to believe that there was not one single clean room in the entire hotel. But since there are few options in Kayenta, they can afford to forget about civility and service. We left and did our drive through Monument Valley with a car full of luggage. We were able to get a room when we returned at 6 p.m. Dinner in the on-site restaurant was a mistake. The food was mediocre and the service nonexistant. Our waitress barely spoke to us and disappeared for long stretches of time. The only saving grace was that my two under-12 kids ate for free - but they had run out of the desserts included with the kids meals, so the kids had to share a dish of strawberry ice cream, the only flavor available. If I were to travel the area in the future, I would drive hours out of the way to avoid staying in Kayenta. This hotel Blows! This is a holiday in and it looks more like a hourly rate motel..and trust me, I've been in a few. The only perk was More than one pillow on the bed. The lights hurt the eyes, the curtains had odd stains, and the pool was "Closed indefinitely". The food was worse than the food at a strip club. The wooden beams that were on the ceiling and around the door had wholes that were stuff with little plastic bags, not sure if it was to keep out moisture or keep the roaches at bay. I understand that this hotel is in a city that is just a stopping place for travalers going to sight seeing destinations, but it also has the "Holiday Inn" name on it and should be in much better shape especially when they charge more than the other hotels in the area. Setting: Sullen, Resentful staff; slowly-served, monochromatic, warmed-over food; accumulated RESIDUE in the bathrooms AND - finally - everywhere: pitiful, bony stray-dogs. Avoid this establishment ...drive on. 2nd stay in 4 years and they still haven't dealt with their Stray Domestic Animals!!!!!!! Thought we would give it another chance and it hasn't changed. The town of Kayenta is a pit. Lots of stray, sick, maimed domestic animals. Dogs and Cats roam the hotel and its heartbreaking. DRIVE RIGHT THROUGH THIS PLACE and don't look back you may see the dead horses we saw. Staff couldn't give a hoot about your stay and the clothes dryer is no more than a cold air dryer. Disgusting. We were due to spend one night in September at the Holiday Inn in Kayenta on route from Monument Valley to the Grand Canyon. We arrived early and asked to check in. Although the hotel looked virtually empty we were told that there was no way we could check in before 3. I then asked if there was some visitor information locally. The unfriendly receptionist directed us to a empty shack. At this point we decided that we didn't want to hang around any longer, forfitted pre paid room and drove onto Flagstaff. Booked over the internet back in March, arrived with confirmation only to be told there was no booking. After much effort (on my part, staff couldn't care less) I was told it was my fault as I had requested a type of room which they didn't have. When I pointed out I had a confirmation, and showed it they said this was still my fault but they would ALLOW me to stay. They couldn't even get that right - they booked us in for one night not two and we had to endure another trip to reception to resolve this next day. Pool was closed, when we asked why (as hotel guide advised open until 15th October) I was told it was winter (23rd Sept and over 80 degrees), treated like I was stupid and staff discussed me behind a door. I will never return to this hotel, would not recommend to my worst enemy and was stupid enough to have dinner there one evening - the food is appalling and extertionate. Just drive on right by this hovel to the Hampton Inn, I sure wish we had
