5 of 5  Fantastic Hotel - Highly Reconmended!, A TripAdvisor Member, cardiff-wales, May 27, 2009

We arrived to the Hotel Victoria for our 3rd anniversary, having stayed previously for our Honeymoon and subsequently each year.

The hotel never fails to fault, we were upgraded to a seaview room, which happened to be the same room we had on our honeymoon, so this was great.

Fantastic to see the changes in now providing modern white linen, although i still do dispair at the carpeted bathrooms, although cleanliness and hygiene are spot on!

Breakfast is great, poached eggs cooked perfect, although a shame that you cannot now sit in the section with the sea view, though I expect that this is down to the fact that the hotel was fully booked.

I look forward to return again hopefully in Autumn, if not definately for my 4th Anniversary next year.

I do hope the staff read this as it is a pleasure and I say this when I work within the industry and see many hotels for work reasons!

5 of 5  An Oasis in a Cultural Desert, A TripAdvisor Member, Brighton, May 21, 2009

As part of a group of 20 men of a certain age on a golfing weekend we descended on Newquay with few pre-conceptions. The weather was great and we found some fantastic courses but we were rather underwhelmed with the town. Once we got used to the swish of nylon we soon realised that maybe we are getting a bit too old to be so judgemental. We are definitely getting fussier as we get older and our hearts sank as we saw some of the hotels that had been considered.

There were no such worries with the Hotel Victoria. Slightly (but not much) more expensive than the others it deserves all the plaudits it receives. The staff were super friendly and efficient. A large group like us can be quite daunting but once it was established that we were not hooligans nothing was too much trouble. Well, that is not strictly true, as one of our group is 6'5" and would have appreciated a larger bed but was informed the hotel was full. That aside we received excellent service throughout the food was hot and nutritious and served pretty much how and when we wanted it.

The kitchen was more flexible than normal probably because good manners and appreciation from guests goes a lot further than most people in this country seem to realise. Jim and his team happily changed the menu to suit our needs although I got the distinct impression that this was most unusual and I would like to think a reflection on the rapport we struck up with the staff. Every night we worked our way through the wine-list only to find it replenished the next day.

The rooms were clean and the one I had was spacious with a fabulous sea-view. Only one lift but the grand staircase was not at all onerous.

Given our size and other functions in the hotel, we were shepherded into a back bar during the evening but again the service ensured that this worked out extremely well. The view of the night club below also gave hours of entertainment! Free entry was a bonus but a short-lived one for most of us.

Would I recommend Hotel Victoria? Absolutely.

Would I go back to Newquay? Hmmm

A big debt of thanks to Poppy, Jim, Sarah, Alice and all the staff who really bent over backwards to make us feel welcome.

5 of 5  No faults, A TripAdvisor Member, NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND, May 3, 2009

Excellent location for local amenities, shops, bars and restaurants. Staff friendly and cleanliness of communal areas, guest rooms and bathrooms superb. Exceptional value for money. Would definately recommend to family and friends and stay here again. Hotel very grand and opulent and the pool area is beautiful.

5 of 5  Nice relaxing hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, New Zealand, April 14, 2009

We stayed for 4 nights in April. Was very easy to find in a great location, very close to everything. The decor in the room was a little out of date, but went well with the hotel look. The room was nice and clean had a good sized window that opened, as the sun was in our room most of the afternoon. We had a good sized room and bathroom, and a great size bed. The pool and the spa were lovely, especially after a day of sightseeing. The breakfast was good, a shame about the breakfast staff though. Most of the young staff seemed like grumpy teenagers who had just gotten out of bed. Would definately stay here again though.

5 of 5  very nice, A TripAdvisor Member, hampshire, April 10, 2009

We stayed for 1 night (a thursday), and had a lovely stay, we were upgraded to a superior sea view room and the view was lovely over the beach.

We walked into town which takes 30 seconds, then came back and used the hotels pool, jacuzzi, steam room etc. which were all very nice and in good condition, clean changing areas etc.with a view out to sea from the pool. Went into town in the evening quite quiet but found a few pubs to drink in, had a good nights sleep.

Breakfast was very nice, waitress service for cooked breakfast and self service cereals etc. first. I would reccomend this hotel.

5 of 5  Old Skool & proud., A TripAdvisor Member, Peterborough, United Kingdom, October 21, 2008

Its the big victorian hotel in the center of the town, well it would be wouldn't it. It is old school and that is no bad thing. Lovely entrance massive staircase and dinning room is amazing. The room was old , old fashioned but thats what the place is . Not tatty or anything but classical , if you want all that modern jazz then you may be in the wrong place. Hey it has free internet, thats modern and something the big chains could do with providing ! Food is great, location great, and its traditional, thats the word i have been looking for. A proper english traditional hotel, away from the stag & hen crowd. But close to the town to join in if you want !! (try the central pub). The hotel is a very civilized experience, and that is to its credit.

5 of 5  A brilliant place, A TripAdvisor Member, west midlands, August 5, 2008

We have just come back form a hen weekend in newquay and included in our hen weekend package was a day at the spa. The spa was at the victoria hotel in newquay. I can honestly say that I have never met more accommodating and friendlier people in all my life. They bent over backwards to make sure that our day there was as enjoyable for us all as possible. When we arrived there in the morning we had not had any breakfast due to the appauling accomodation we had been staying in WHICH IS NOT THE VICTORIA HOTEL IT IS THE SUTHERLAND HOTEL but that is another review. Well anyway they had finished serving breakfast but becuase none of us had eaten they went and arranged loads of toast and jam for us free of charge of course. The treatments we recieved were first class and they really took their time. All the facilities there were brilliant and i could not fault anything. It is a very glamourous hotel with chandaliers and antique furniture.

Ontop of all this they arranged for us to have a FREE limosine to pick us up from the hotel we were staying in that night and take us to their nightclub they had next door and also free champagne when we got there. So all in all I thought that they were a top notch hotel

Thank you ever so much Katie

5 of 5  Great Mini Break!, A TripAdvisor Member, Kent,England, April 1, 2008

We had stayed at the Victoria for Valentine's 5 years ago, and decided that it was time to return to Newquay. Upon both occasions, we had accommodation with Sea Views: because we are aware that street facing rooms are subject to noise from the adjoning Nightclub, at weekends. This visit lasted four days on the run up to Easter, and neither the town nor the Hotel, were busy. In our exerience, all staff, from check in at reception, to Porters and cleaners, were friendly and helpful.

The Catering has been leased to a local family, who run the Restaurant for both Breakfast and Dinner. (The evening meals are mostly French dishes). We enjoyed the food very much, and upon the first night, Chef came out to meet and chat with the guests. He also cooked an alternative Main Course for my wife one evening, when she didn't fancy any of the three Set Menu offerings. The indoor pool and Jacuzzi area are clean and welcoming, but time your visit carefully: as the pool is rented out during the late mornings most weekdays( Ladies Aquarobics), and again in the afternoons, for a children's swimming group.

We would not hesitate to return again to this delightful Hotel: with its' creature comforts, and superb views of the beach, and Newquay airport, in the distance.

5 of 5  loved it!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, midlands, January 26, 2007

very welcoming staff made us feel at home but with a great level of professionalism and customer care. Reception and the porters did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. great location with excellent facilities. Regency restaurant food was great as well as Buzios and the mexican, Senor Dicks. Room was great with a free upgrade.

5 of 5  Perfect!, A TripAdvisor Member, Oxford, September 4, 2006

We were slightly disappionted on arrival as the front of the hotel on website pictures looks as though it is in a peaceful setting. It is not. It is directly in Newquay centre.

My partner and i went for our anniversary and we loved every minute.

The staff were fantastic - so friendly.

The breakfast was gorgeous.

On our first night our room was situated above the main reception room where they had a rather loud disco for a wedding reception, the noise was unbearable so the next morning i went to reception expecting to put up a fight to change rooms. The receptionist apologised for any inconvenience and moved us immediatley! I couldn't believe it. We had book a superior double and was worried that in school hols they would not have another available but this was not an issue.

Overall a really lovely hotel, the staff make it, we will be returning every year now and we normally go abroad.

5 of 5  great hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, newcastle, April 22, 2006

this is a stunning hotel, the rooms were good, the staff were great and all very helpful, the food was also very good. Facilities were great and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We spent a very romantic 4 nights with a great mexican restaurant and nightclub. I expected the nightclub noise to affect the hotel and was surprised to see that it didnt even though we had a room on that side. All in all a great holiday and would recommed to all!!!!!

5 of 5  Fantastic, A TripAdvisor Member, Stourbridge, West Midlands, July 19, 2005

My husband and i came to Hotel Victoria for our Honeymoon in 2004, the staff were fantastic, and the Honeymoon suite was to die for. We were made to feel very welcome, and also given 2 bottles of bubbly. We are coming back for our 1st anniversary, and would highly recommend the hotel.

5 of 5  Excellent, A TripAdvisor Member, New York, January 20, 2005

Just enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Hotel Victoria in Newquay, splendid facilities, all employees went out of their way to help us. Would highly recommend to anyone. Great central location and easy for beach.

5 of 5  Hotel Victoria is AB FAB!, A TripAdvisor Member, Costa Mesa, CA, October 21, 2003

I stayed in the hotel for one month in the summer. I couldn't have asked for a nicer place to be. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the room had a sunken tub and the beach was right behind the hotel. Also they have a delicious spongecake desert :) The only problem is f you are not a big club or partying person. BEWARE...the noise from people leaving te clubs a pubs is no joke. This is only in the summer months when it's a big tourist area. If you go have fun. :) There is an aquarium and zoo nearby for the kiddies.

5 of 5  Hotel Victoria . . . A Charmer, A TripAdvisor Member, Boston, Massachusetts, November 2, 2002

Have been staying at The Victoria (The "Vic" as called by locals) since 1985. The hotel has been renovated through the years, and gets better and better in all aspects of service through time.

On entering the Hotel, one is greeted by a warm and friendly staff; the atmosphere of the lounge and dining room is the equivalent of a 4-star, London hotel. Depending on one's budget, you can stay in a standard,

deluxe, or suite-caliber room. The deluxe rooms all have sea views.

The menu in the main dining room changes daily, and portions are always ample. There is a good Mexican restaurant attached to the Hotel-- for those looking for nontraditional fare. For the really adventurous, try

Bertie's discotheque and pub attached to the Hotel (these cater to the young, and the "young-at-heart."

The hotel complex has been in family hands since the 1970's and the location, in the heart of Newquay (the surfing capital of the U.K., I kid you not), can't be beat.

4 of 5  Great Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Bham, June 14, 2009

I would disagree with the last comments on here !

Stayed with my girlfriend for a few days last week and had a good time!

Found the hotel to be good and the staff in particular to be very helpfull

Our room was fine and the food good

4 of 5  New Years Eve Party... Wonderful !!, A TripAdvisor Member, Cornwall UK, January 28, 2009

Before the Credit Crunch starts to hit we decided to do what the advert said and 'remember the Victoria as it used to be', and we weren't disappointed! On a bitterly cold day we were welcomed by friendly staff, a warmning drink and two open fires. Room was comfortable and we had a fantastic view. Good evenings entertainment and we didnt feel old ! ( we are both in our 60's). Music was just right for us anyway. Well done to the Victoria and everyone involved. We shall be back for next New Year.

4 of 5  Happy stay, friendly staff, A TripAdvisor Member, SouthamptonUK, September 29, 2008

My family and I have just stayed at the Hotel Victoria for 2 nights and had a lovely time. We were there for a family wedding and all the arrangements etc went really well. The hotel itself was nice - the public lounge was tidy with lots of comfy settees - the reception area was small but welcoming and the restaurant and bar were both "old fashioned" but clean and comfortable. Some people have commented on cleanliness but we had no complaints at all - the 2 rooms we had booked were both clean and the decor, again far from modern (mainly dark furniture) were fine for our stay. All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful and were a credit to the hotel. Only a couple of minor issues - one of the rooms has a "swimming pool" smell about it the day we arrived but it did at least clear - the second issue was around temperature - we were lucky enough to have great weather for our stay but the rooms were so warm at times, they could really do with aircon!

We have stayed in several hotels in Newquay and the Victoria was as good as any if not better. We would stay here again without a doubt.

4 of 5  What a Wonderful Stay!, A TripAdvisor Member, Memphis, Tennessee, February 1, 2008

This was my first visit to Newquay -- and what a wonderful visit it was! The Victoria Hotel and it's design and furnishings was very pretty. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. The food was delicious and presentation was visually pleasing. The atmosphere at the bar was great -- the perfect place to enjoy a pint or two.

4 of 5  Great Family Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Leeds, August 15, 2007

My wife, daughter (13) and I have just spent 3 nights at the Hotel Victoria, and would happily recommend it to anyone.

The hotel was very clean and staff polite and helpful. We had the one of the family suites with a sea view. The room was ample big enough and cleaned to a high standard daily. All furniture and decor were in excellent condition.

Breakfast was good and what you would expect from a 3 * hotel (Cereals, yogurts, full English etc). We didn’t eat in the hotel’s French restaurant, but did eat in their Mexican (next door), we enjoyed an excellent 3 courses and drinks for under £50.

TIP: Take your key card and get 10% off your bill. The hotel also offered 10% off their in-house French restaurant (£19 for 3 courses)

We also made use of the pool and sauna areas - again these were very clean and enjoyed good views over the bay (towels provided via reception).

The bar has plenty of places to sit and relax we particularly enjoyed the sea view bar (see pics).

The inside of the hotel is very well maintained and typical of a large modernised Victorian 3* hotel. The only down side (and I am being very picky now) was the outside. The front of the hotel was once very grand it is now been cluttered with limousines and mobile bill boards advertising one of the hotel’s nite clubs (Berties). Advertisements for “Wet T Shirt” competitions seem to take the hotel down a notch. I’m no prude, it’s just a shame to see Newquay taking a step toward “tacky” Blackpool.

All in all we found this hotel excellent and would highly recommend a stay. Its in a great location with easy access to the beach, the town, the cliffs etc etc.

For some good food try Finns Restaurant down at the harbour (brilliant food in a unique location – we watched the seals swim in the harbour on our last night!). You could also try the Mararajah Indian Restaurant (on the front near the train station end of town).

For a great day out we enjoyed Flambards (a league above Creally Adventures!).

4 of 5  Perfect stay for us, A TripAdvisor Member, Weymouth, July 10, 2007

We spent three nights at the Hotel Victoria on a special offer which was 3 nights for the price of two. We paid extra for an upgrade to a room with sea views which was well worth it. Staff were very friendly and always willing to help. Lovely indoor pool looking out over the beach. Breakfast was really nice lots of choices and you could tell it was freshly cooked and not been sat in a hot plate for an hour. I think for a three star hotel they are giving very good quality and very hight standards. Ni complaints at all. Hope to return one day.

4 of 5  Friendly Staff, Nice But Dated Hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Oxford, UK, March 30, 2007

I stayed at this hotel last weekend for one night (middle March). I was only down for one night and it was a bit of a flying visit! I needed a place in the centre, close to a venue for a concert, and near to the bus station. I looked through alot of the reviews on TripAdvisor (as always) and decided to stay at this hotel. I had been told the B&Bs were very good however I knew the concert would finish quite late so I wanted to stay somewhere with a 24hour reception. This hotel was a 5-10 minute walk away from the bus station and centrally located - you just walk a few steps out the door onto one of the main streets.

I was reluctant to book this hotel because not only was it not very high in the Popularity ratings on TripAdvisor, but it was over my price range. I am not a budget traveller but I am not rich either! When I looked up the hotel on Expedia, they quoted a special price of £110. I checked the main hotel website and could get a single room for £60. It did not have a sea view but it looked like you could not book a single room with a sea view. I was very pleasantly surprised to arrive at the hotel and find I had been upgraded to a double room, and for a mere £10 I could have a sea view room! It was a fantastic view - very refreshing to look outside. I have to say if I had spent much over £100 for the double room with sea view room I may have been a bit disappointed because the furniture is a bit dated/marked (as is some of the hotel) and as a previous person commented, it could do with a bit of a redecorate. Also I could hear the people in the room next door to me. The hotel is not as glamorous as the photos on the website suggests. However, I wanted a nice comfortable place to stay for one night and it was. From looking around Newquay and seeing the Best Western hotel (from the outside), I was very satisfied with my choice of hotel. Also I noticed that hotel checkout is usually 10am (which seems very early to me - I am used to 12!), but at the Victoria it is 10.30am.

I did not eat at the restaurant so cannot comment on the food. I did read in their guide in the room that scruffy jeans cannot be worn in the restaurant. I did not bring any smart clothes with me so am not sure I could have eaten in the restaurant!

Also the staff were all very lovely and friendly and accommodating. It is so nice to have people who want to help. I think for that reason alone, if I find myself back in Newquay again, I would stay in this hotel.

4 of 5  Fab hotel, A TripAdvisor Member, Devon, October 26, 2005

Fab hotel - great location.

Close to all ameneties - shops, restaurants, pubs.

Half price entrane to club next door and discount at mexican restaurant.

Room was lovely - didnt make it to breakfast so can't comment on that. Staff great and opened bar for us after normal closing time.

It is a little pricey but well worth it if you want a little luxury in the heart of newquay.

4 of 5  Relieved, A TripAdvisor Member, Deal, October 25, 2005

We booked three nights for the beginning of half term week. My heart sank when we read the reviews on this site and we nearly cancelled. However the offered rate was really good value so we persisted. The room was excellent, sea view on the third floor, room clean and recently decorated. The staff were polite and helpful. I doubt very much that I would go to Newquay again and here I have to agree with other correspondents. But this is not the hotel's fault. Parking can be a bit tricky and routes out of town are complicated. Breakfast was freshly cooked and dinner was not at all bad. The town offers a contemporary Indian cuisine restaurant and there is an Italian place quite near to the hotel. I have stayed in more expensive and less attractive hotels on the Eastbourne promenade. If only the Victoria were somewhere else!

3 of 5  OK but had it's day, A TripAdvisor Member, Wiltshire, March 10, 2008

Nothing special, decor out of date, mock victorian, rooms comfortable but watch for room at front as mega noisy due to night club and high street very noisy ALL night!

3 of 5  It's really not that bad! Honest!, A TripAdvisor Member, Derby, England, July 24, 2006

Ive stayed here twice now and the reviews are very off putting but if you go there thinking the worse you'll be plesantly surprised. We stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of July 2006. Had a room overlooking the front which was a mistake as it does get noisy in Newquay at night. We had a seaview last time we came and wished we had this time as it was so much nicer. My only real gripe was the bathroom which being carpeted was'nt very hygenic and it has a damp feel and smell to it. Apart from this the service was great and breakfast was yummy! The seaview from the dining room was gorgeous. We paid £75 a night for the room which isnt bad and lets be honest there aren't many great hotels in Newquay especially with this great city centre location.

3 of 5  Did the job......, A TripAdvisor Member, Hampshire, July 9, 2006

Me and my partner stayed here last year. We didnt book in advance and spend a couple of hours looking for somewhere to stay, and this was the best we could find.

The room was small and dated but it did the job. We normally stay in 4 or 5 star places so this was a bit of a shock to the system.

The bed was hard and not very comfortable.

We enjoed our stay though, purely because we went to Newquay to have a good time and we didnt spend much time in the room!

We were there for a few nights but didnt eat there, we wanted to try out the other places in town. We never made it down in time for breakfast but we did order room service one morning, just tea and toast and some ceral but this took a long time to arrive. As we both work in the hotel industry we didnt mind the wait as we understand that there are busy times in the morning!

I would go back again but not for a special occasion, its just a bed thats all!

3 of 5  Disappointed. Really poor value., A TripAdvisor Member, Leicestershire, England, July 3, 2005

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights hoping for a relaxing stay in this so called "luxury" hotel. The first thing to point out is that the photo on the website is extremely misleading. The hotel appears to be set in its own grounds on the cliff top when in fact it is rammed on to Newquay's main street amongst the seedy bars and flashing tacky shop lights. My heart sank through the floor when I arrived. Things didn't get much better. My shower was taped to the wall and there was a big hole in the bed spread. Two of the reasons I chose this hotel were 1) the lift that descends from the hotel lobby directly on to the beach and 2) the swimming pool and spa area. The lift wasn't working due to a rock fall and the pool area was dingy and in need of a re-fit.

Having said all that, things weren't all bad. The staff were all nice and very helpful, the room was clean and the cooked breakfast was good. I just wish I'd spent £25 a night at a B&B rather than £65 per night to feel cheated.

We would say that the hotel staff were fine room was cland the ean, if a bit tired in decor, however, I booked the room for three nights for a special occasion our 20th wedding anerversary and I particularly requested a quiet sea view room as we wanted a romantic time, away from the children. with no booming music from the ride in the car park makeing a mess of the front of what should have been a buatifuly romantic hotel and been draged out of bed at 12:30 am to move our van from the car park becouse the fire marshel wanted it moveing . I have to say No this was not the romantic breake we wanted, when this was pointed out to staf I was told (well we are in the center of Newquay.

And that lovely feature of a privet lift going down to the beach, on further investigation I have found out has not worked for some time. So don't let that be a selling point. over all I would not come back again.

2 of 5  A Mixed Bag, A TripAdvisor Member, londongal1979, July 6, 2008

I stayed in Newquay for the first time over a long weekend in June. I went with 3 girlfriends. To be honest, I feel Hotel Victoria is a bit of a mixed bag. The one major plus about it is the location. It is superbly located in the heart of newquay town near most of the major nightspots and restaurants and a private beach below. The hotel itself is a bit dull and dated in decor, downstairs is refurbished quite nicely, but the rooms are dull and lifeless and in desperate need of a make-over. The staff are a mixed bag also, the girls on the desk were relatively friendly and helpful, but seemed a bit huffy if you asked them too many questions or offered them less than positive feedback about your stay.

The one downfall for us, is that on the weekend that we stayed, the owners had decided to use their hotel as the reception for the owner's sister's wedding. I thought this was a bit of a conflict of interest as suddenly we were treated like second-class citizens instead of paying guests to be treated as first priority. It seemed ALL the staff at this hotel were attending this reception, so on the day of the wedding, the reception was un-manned for the most part of the day and the beauty therapist rushed through her appointments to finish early to attend and the result of my nail paint finish was as though painted by a 6 year old. The massage was certainly not deep-tissue as I requested, but a 'lazy' surface massage.

The second big downfall was how one was treated at breakfast times. I would say the breakfast was not too bad, a bit above average, but the service was poor. Despite the fact that breakfast cut-off time is 10am, the buffet gets cleared away at 10.15am so for those holidayers who wish to enjoy a little nap on their well earned holiday have to try and scoff in as much as they can in 15 minutes before the plates are swept out from under them! When I politely pointed it out that it might be nicer to clear the dishes away at least 10.30am they seemed huffy by my customer suggestion.

I think it's a tight-knit clicky group that work for the hotel, and they need to start appreciating the customer's needs more and act more professional and accommodating

2 of 5  Tired hotel., A TripAdvisor Member, Westerham, United Kingdom, March 31, 2008

I spent one night at the hotel Victoria (Midweek). The hotel is well past it's best with a dark and tired interior that is a long way off the prices being charged. The rooms have a poorly executed mock victorian look, which i am sure looked ok around 15 years ago, they are now showing their age.

There is a swimming pool in the basement, but is used by locals for childrens swimming lessons in the early evening, thus making it useless to those who are on business.

The gym is a joke, and looks more like the sort of thing you would find in someones garage after several visits to a boot fair!

Breakfast was ok, staff were ok.

Avoid this hotel it is not as described on their website.

2 of 5  "Noisey and Spookey", A TripAdvisor Member, Southampton, April 8, 2007

We stayed at the Victoria Hotel for one night. First impressions.. The outside of the building is extremely dull and uninviting as soon as we walked into the Hotel i was even more unhappy with my choice! The Hotel was dark and aged looking (not in a good way, although very clean)we were then shown to our room which we immediately changed due to the strong smell of cigarette smoke. i could not believe how badly decorated our sea-view room with balcony was(which was basically the roof top of the restaurant below shared with other guests). The room we were moved to was small and pokey but did the job and didn’t smell like an ashtray! Later that evening when we returned from trying to find alternative accommodation around Newquay (i really didn’t want to stay there the whole place spooked me out!) being the Easter Bank Holiday this was an impossible task! So we had no choice but to stay. Our new room was on the side of the worlds noisiest club "Berties" and at around 10.30ish all you could hear was the constant pounding base from the club. This carried on till 3AM...

On a positive note the staff were friendly and the breakfast was good (i was told as i only had cereal).

2 of 5  Has good and bad points, A TripAdvisor Member, Swindon, UK, September 12, 2005

Booked double room on the phone. Turned up and allocated a room over the nightclub. Great view of the sea, good quality sound system pumping through the floorboards. Asked to be moved. No double rooms. Got a single room which was ok. Went back the next day and asked for a double room. "Why, certainly sir, I don't know why you weren't given one yesterday!". Got an absolutely fantastic corner room with a view of the sea and sunset, nice and quiet, recently renovated. Breakfast was okay and freshly cooked rather than buffet style.

Jacuzzi was off for the duration with no explanation why. Swimming pool was good, as was sauna and fitness room.

So, as long as you don't get the (-) on reception, and get a room away from the nightclub (you want the west/south end), you'll be ok.

1 of 5  Disappointing, A TripAdvisor Member, London, June 22, 2009

I have to start by saying that I did not like Newquay at all. It is really chavvy and loud, and there is no escape form that if you wnat somehting different. I was hoping that if youi got a way from the main street, there would be nice restaurants etc - there is not. All there is is groups of stag and hen dos being obnoxious and loud.

However, if you like Newquay, then this hotel is really cental with great access to everything.

However, having read reviews on here I specifically requested a quiet room, instead we got the loudest room in the hotel and we were up all night to hear people shouting and swaring down the main street. This stops about 5am, but then at 6 the traffic begins to pick up again. Also, the bath didn't work properly and it was generally rather grubby.

After complaining, we got upgraded to a seaview room which was much nicer and quiet. So if you are staying here make sure you request and request agan a quiet room!

We were never able to use the restaurant or hotel bar as it was reserved for a function on both nights which was disappointing as I picked this hotel so because of the facilities that overlooked the sea.

Altogether, very disappointing and certainly not worth the £80 per night for a double room that we paid.

Go to St Ives - it is much lovlier and a lot cooler, with nicer bars, restaurants and shops than horrible Newquay!

1 of 5  Awful!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, west yorks, August 30, 2008

I booked the Hotel Victoria as we wanted to stay in a 3* plus hotel in the centre of Newquay for our wedding anniversary. The room cost £145 for ones nights stay and for that amount of money I was at least expecting a clean and comfortable room. What we got was a tired room with stains on the carpet, mould on the wallpaper, tatty furniture and worst of all a balcony with pigeon poo, fag ends and a half empty kebab box! We felt completely disheartened and so I put a complaint in saying the room was a dump. In fairness the staff moved us to another room and gave us a bottle of wine. The second room was ok but still had tired fixtures and fittings. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone unless it has a complete refurbishment and the cleaners learn how to clean properly. Furthermore don’t stay there if you want to go to sleep before 3am as the nightclub next door is extremely noisy. The breakfast staff were lovely though and at least the front of house staff moved us to what they would probably class as one of their better rooms!

1 of 5  Never again!!, A TripAdvisor Member, portsmouth, August 3, 2008

We stayed for 3 nights. Bedroom had tatty furniture and the bath room was like a grey portakabin with chipped worktops. No shower. Never up to 3 star standard. Room was very hot so we left our widow slightly open, when we returned there was a pidgeon in the room. Dinner was included on our first night but food was poor and no atmosphere so we used a cafe along the road as did other guests. They had a booklet about the controlled seagull cull in the room. One morning I was awoken by seagulls shreiking because the mexican restaurant next door (owned by the hotel) had not closed their bins, there was a mess all over the car park and the cars covered in bird dung. We paid a bargain price for 3 night stay yet still feel ripped off.

1 of 5  would never go back, A TripAdvisor Member, johannesburg, south africa, August 10, 2007

I stayed at the hotel in July this year and it will be somewhere I will never ever return to. The rooms are old. The furniture had burn marks on it. The beds have blankets insread of duvets which tells you how old it is. The bathroom floor has carpets which stink from wet damp. The food was poor and the front staff service were not the most friendly or helpful. At 4.30 in the morning a group of ladies game back from a night out which resulted in swearing, doors banging and in general bad behaviour waking everyone else up. The town of Newquay in general is not the pretties or cleanest and would never visit either the town or the hotel again. The restaurant charges a fortune for a steak and when you go to the pub next door you get 3 meals for the price of one in the hotel. Had someone advised me that Newquay was for night life and youngsters this 40 plus couple would never have wasted 3 nights there. When I saw the hotel the only reason I stayed is because I had paid upfront which I sincerely regret. Take it from me a seasoned traveller that there are far nicer places to stay thats unless you are under the age of 30 and looking to get picked up. Sorry this seems harsh but its true. Would never stay there again and would never recommend my worst enemy to either....whoever the owners are need to do a good inspection and fix it up.

1 of 5  Don't bother in your on business, A TripAdvisor Member, Manchester, July 22, 2007

LIke the other reviewer bit of a time warp here. However cannot complain about the girls on reception very helpfull.

Now the bad bits. Very loud, very old.. There seems to be a couple of bars/clubs restaurants adjacent to the hotel which belong to the hotel. I get the inpression that these are the money making arms of this business. I was woken at 2.00 AM, I guess chucking out time and kept awake till 5 AM. Had to be up at 7.00 AM so pretty tired most of the day. The hotel knew I was on Business so I expected a room of some tranquillity but given a front room. Stay away if you need to rise early for work.

Checking out time 10:30 AM never heard of this one, had to walk around Newquay for 5 hours good job it was sunny.

Breakfast was good with pleasant staff serving.

1 of 5  dark, dirty and disgusting, A TripAdvisor Member, oxford, June 11, 2007

On arrival the hotel looked as if it had been closed for the last 20 years. It was dull, dark and dirty looking!!! I felt like i had gone back in time as we walked into reception. It is all very grand (in an old kind of way). The only thing in the hotel that hasn't been there for the last 50/100 years is the staff (who were very nice and helpful). Walking into the room i fooled myself into thinking things would be better in there............. they just got worse!!!! The room was pokey, the furniture was old and the bed was terrible!! The sea view was nice if you looked over the grubby rooftop of the dining room. We shared our balcony with the next door room, although they only had a window and not a door. The hotel nightclub was very loud and kept us awake until the early hours. Theone impressive thing about the hotel was the lift which took us through the rock underneath to the beach (as long as you timed it so the tide was out). It was an experience going down there and walking through the wet, spooky tunnel - but good - well worh it if you do stay there.

1 of 5  a bleak night, A TripAdvisor Member, south wales, October 8, 2006

The room was dark, bleak and 'pokey' . It lacked a 'cared for' appearance, rather like a store room which could 'double-up' as a spare bedroom. The bathroom could have done with a re-decoation as it looked sad and too well used. The shower arrangement, I felt could be potentially dangerous as there was no means of setting the water temperature apart from adjusting the water from taps. This resulted in being scalded or frozen when other taps in the system were used. The Reception area was cramped and lacked any degree of privacy. Certainly, I would not use this hotel again.

1 of 5  The worst weekend away, A TripAdvisor Member, Plymouth, Devon, November 28, 2005

A romantic weekend away at the "top" hotel was a disgrace.

The so called luxury room was small, the ensuite bathroom was bigger. The bedsheets had cigarette burns, the shower head didn't fit into the holder and as a result you had to hold the head as you showered, there was hair in the bath and bronser pearls on the bathroom floor.

The dining waitress was rude and abrupt and refused to even allow us to move a chair at the table to get a better view of the sea, despite it not being in anyones way. When asked why we were told "because it has to stay where it has been put"! Following breakfast I became very ill and was continually sick for the rest of the night - my partner and I ate exactly the same things that day except for the breakfast so we made our own judgements as to why i became ill.

We got the general impression that as students our money wasn't quite as welcome as other more wealthy guests which was offensive.

The only good thing about the place was the jacuzzi and swimming pool, but for the price we paid I would've preferred to visit the local leisure centre pool!

1 of 5  Beware, A TripAdvisor Member, UK, November 18, 2005

Stayed here this week, booked same day and told only economy rooms left. I asked why they were economy rooms and told "they are just like all our rooms but over the nightclub, the nightclub is closed so will not be a problem". If this is what all of the rooms are like, I will not be returning. The carpet was stained, the wallpaper was woodchip painted yellow and was not new. The bathroom walls were plasterboard that looked like a DIY job. Also, I arrived at the hotel at about 3:00 pm, on the way to the room I passed an empty beer glass on a sideboard and an empty bottle of bud with 2 sets of cutlery next to it, still there when went out at 4, still there when returned at 6, still there when went out at 7, still there when returned at 11, stll there when went for breakfast at 8:15, still there when returned from breakfast at 9:00, still there when checked out at 9:15, surely a member of staff would walk around the hotel at some time.

Only plus points, receptionists very attractive and waitresses at breakfast friendly and helpful.

1 of 5  Disgusting!, A TripAdvisor Member, Somerset, September 3, 2005

The downstairs area in the Victoria is ok and the breakfast was good, but the room was disgusting!!

I stayed there as a friend had her wedding there in Spet '03, we booked a family room as our little one came too.

Growing up in Newquay i am familiar with the hotel, but had never slept there before so I was expecting the usual 4 star luxuries. I was severly let down and thank god I never have to stay there again!!

Our room was ok in size with a double bed and two singles in it and the ensuite was passible (just!)!!

However, what really let the whole thing down was the mould in the corner of the room and the wallpaper that was peeling off there!!! The whole room just felt damp and horrid!

My partner & I really can't figure out how the Hotel Victoria keeps it star status. I would recommend anyone thinking of staying here, to use the Headland instead!

1 of 5  disgrace to cornwall visistors, A TripAdvisor Member, london, August 19, 2005

this hotel was a big dissapointment to us

i wish that i had asked to see the room before i had paid as i never would have stayed there. The noise from the venues around was appalling i live in the middle of london so its not that i am not used to traffic ect. But yobs shouting and swearing outside my window did not impress me. Nor did the stains on the carpets and the tacky decor, I can honestly say it is the worst hotel i have ever stayed in.

1 of 5  appalling, A TripAdvisor Member, ENGLAND, February 23, 2005

Having travelled quite extensively I have to say that this is one of the worst hotels. Being single I was subjected to the usual poor standard of room, dirty linen, substandard furnishings. Food was adequate, service with a frown. As someone who grew up in cornwall, I am disappointed that Newquay has developed from an exclusive, elegant town into a yob ridden den of iniquity.

1 of 5  shocking!!!, A TripAdvisor Member, london, July 2, 2004

without a shadow of a doubt this is the worst hotel i have stayed in anywhere in the world!!! it's dated, looks like it hasen't seen a lick of paint for decades and seems to be stuck in a 1950's timewarp. as for the excuse for a restaurant words almost fail me! i thought such a combination of rude and arrogant staff allied with appalling food could not be improved upon. this place is truely a disgrace and would not be out of place in an episode of fawlty towers! i could go on for ever with an endless list of problems but i feel this institution has taken up enough of my time.
