5 of 5  Luxury Accomadations on the Big Island, A TripAdvisor Member, Alexandria, Virginia, July 17, 2008

We just spent two weeks in Hawaii. For 6 days we were at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Waikoloa Beach. We had a two bedroom condo and it was awesome. We have stayed at other HGVC resorts and this has been the best. The units are appointed with extras like a large flat screen TV with Bose surround sound. The master suite had a oversized whirlpool tub and a multi jetted shower big enough for two or three people.

The resort grounds are nice. The pool on property is small but had a slide. The pool was lively at happy hour and usually live music in the afternoons/evenings.

There is a shuttle that runs through the community and makes stops at shopping areas and the other resorts. The main attraction is the Hilton Waikoloa Village resort that guests of the Vacation club have access to. The lagoon pool is extremely large with waterfalls and waterslides. Our 10yr old love the pool. There is also a lagoon for snorkeling and other water sports.

When we go back to the big island we would definitely stay here again...

5 of 5  Great Pool, Big Very Big., A TripAdvisor Member, slc ut, August 26, 2008

This is the largest hotel grounds that I think we've stayed. They have a monorail to prove it! This is a convention center hotel, there are alot of singles at this hotel that you don't see at many hotels in Hawaii. There is no beach to speak of, only a water inlet that is part of the hotel. With dolphins swimming in the pool on the grounds it really makes it a great view from your balcony. All of the art work spread out makes the walk around the inside of the property special. They also have boats that take you around the property thats fun. The pool area is large enough that you can spread out and not feel crowded. Rooms are nice, a little old, but the new bedding and furniture makes up for it. Hilton has kept up with this hotel and it shows. Walking the grounds takes at least two hours and your in awe for most of it!! Truly a Hawaiian Hotel.

5 of 5  HGVC Waikoloa was GREAT!, A TripAdvisor Member, Carlsbad, CA, July 7, 2008

Stayed at HGVC Waikoloa the first week of July. It was beautiful and looked just like the pictures we saw. After reading about the shuttle issues, I was worried... to no avail. They ran exactly on the half hour from the lobby area and stopped at Bay Club, Hilton Hotel, Marriott, King's Market and Queen's Market areas. They were even on time on July 4th! We used the free access to the Hilton pools and lagoon. Very easy... just check in at the pool area and get towels. Gorgeous area! The pool at HGVC was a bit small and had zillions of kids. Condos were beautiful and comfortable with full kitchen and 2 bedrooms/2 baths.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me.

5 of 5  Great Facility, Great Location, A TripAdvisor Member, Kingwood, TX, June 25, 2008

We are HGVC Owners and swapped to get to this property. Never having been to the Hawaii Islands, we were not sure what to expect. Waikoloa area was very nice, but shocking to see all the lava everywhere from the airport to the Vacation Club building.

The HGVC facility was extremely nice, just as pictured, with good towels, bath towels, cleaning supplies, everything. Just like home. Bedrooms were nice - big MBR and the 2nd BR had two dble beds. Great kitchen and nice washer / dryer. The club had a great pool area with bar, and the reception and concierge people were very nice.

Booked my activities online, and was a mistake. Taking in the 90 min timeshare speech got me a big discount card, and going into Kona and checking out the street vendors there selling discounts seemed even cheaper. My $75 snorkelling adventure was $38 downtown. Helicopter rides, etc, seemed all cheaper at the discount spots.

Great deal for HGVC owners - golf at $90 per rnd vs resort rate of $130. Also - Hilton Hotel nearby (via shuttle) was also extensive and very nice. All food was expensive, but the facilities were free for HGVC guests. Overall - my wife and two girls loved it!

5 of 5  Great property for long holidays, A TripAdvisor Member, Singapore, Singapore, May 21, 2008

We booked the HGVC through our timeshare and stayed there for a week. We knew that it was a new property and were quite eager to see if the property lived up to the pictures we had seen on the site.

When we got to the unit, we were very pleased to see that it was exactly as promised. They only have 2 bedroom units at this new property, which meant that it was a lot of space for 2 people to have! There was a master bedroom with huge ensuite bath and shower, and a 2nd bedroom with two huge double beds and a common bathroom.

The kitchen was well-stocked with all the cookware, utensils, diningware and cutlery that you would need, including a huge oven, microwave and fridge. There was also a separate washer and dryer room, with one 'serve' of laundry detergent. Both bathrooms had plenty of towels, with a weekly replenishment of new ones. The unit also comes with 4 beach towels for the guests use - we had brought ours out of the unit during the weekly cleaning, so we don't know if they would have replaced them or not. There was also a spacious deck with two loungers and a table for 4. We had a unit that overlooked the pool (unit 1825), which was great because we could enjoy the music and entertainment from the deck, instead of crowding out on the lawn with the rest of the guests.

The unit was very clean - no icky carpets, no dust on counters or any marks or stains anywhere. A small broom and dustpan was also provided in the wash area, so if you needed to do any cleaning/dusting outside of the weekly clean, it's easy enough.

There is a complimentary shuttle that takes you from the HGVC to the Bay Club, the Hilton Hotel and the King's Shops. They leave every half an hour from the reception. We found the shuttle useful for getting to the Hotel for meals, as parking would have been a lot more hassle than it's worth. Parking on the HGVC property is free, just get a parking pass from concierge at check-in.

Great for families with young children if you want to stay in and cook. Also great for longer holidays, as you have the flexibility of eating in or out. We found it useful for breakfasts before we set out every day. Will definitely return to this property. It was a great experience and we felt right at home immediately.

5 of 5  Great Experience, A TripAdvisor Member, Phoenix, AZ, February 29, 2008

When we first arrived at this hotel, we were initially overwhelmed by the size of the property. In most cases, one must take either the monorail or the boat to get to your room. We were located near the family pool area on the far extreme end of the Ocean Tower. The view from our lanai was of the family pool area and the ocean. We were close enough to the ocean to hear the waves crashing to the shore which we loved.

Once one gets acclimated to the property, it has everything one would want to offer including entertainment and programs for children. The walkway along the shoreline is awesome. The choices for dining are from walk-up bars to fine dining restaurants. The Kamuela Provision Company Restaurant is highly recommended. If you make reservations in advance of your stay, you can get a table on the lanai overlooking the ocean and sunset.

Parking can be an issue for some as it is located in a single large lot near the main lobby, but it really wasn't all that inconvenient. Check out the shops in the Lagoon Tower and the lounge just off the main lobby.

Enjoy your stay!

5 of 5  The new Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort, A TripAdvisor Member, Santa Cruz, California, January 31, 2008

We used our annual allotment of Hilton Grand Vacations Club points to book this stay in a deluxe 2 bedroom unit.

The furnishings and architectural finishes of the interior are verrry nice. There were two double beds in the guest room and a king in the master bedroom. The master bath was very large with a walk -in shower as well as a tub.

Each condo has it's own washer and dryer.

Also there are a couple of picnic areas on the property with gas barbecues which are available.

The pool was heated when we were there in January.

The front desk and activity desk staff were always very friendly and helpful.

This is a very comfortable set up for a family of up to 6 people or two couples.

This property is located on the golf course. It does not have a beach but the nearest beach is about 1-1/2 miles away and other beaches are nearby.

4 of 5  Our Big Island Vacation, A TripAdvisor Member, November 11, 2008

We just stayed at HGVC Waikoloa Village as an RCI exchange and had a great vacation.

We stayed in a 2 BR plus unit in building 19 facing the golf course.

The unit was well equipped and maintained and my wife was impressed on how it was tastefully decorated.

Overall quality was very high and I believe the unit was fairly new.

We were traveling with another couple and had ample room in the unit for the 4 or us.

The Bay Club and The HGVC suites are on the same contiguous property and both are managed by Hilton with the difference being that the Bay Club units are a bit older. You can see the mixed reviews as to quality as not all the units have been updated. The welcome letter indicated that the Bay Club was doing renovations and scheduled to be complete in 2010 and 2011. HGVC is virtually complete and they also building a similar club about 1/4 mile up the road on the Kings Golf Course.

I rank the resort at any overall 9 out of 10.

On the plus side, the resort is very accommodating with beautiful grounds and helpful staff.. There is a convenient shuttle to take you over to the Hilton resort where they have beautiful grounds and pools The health club ( on the Bay Club side) was recently updated with several new weight and aerobic machines.

On the negative side, the only real problem was the sound proofing between the floors. The people above us were very noisy with rambunctious kid stampeding across the floor every night. Although we called the main desk to make a call . the noise continued for a good part of the week. The pool at the club house is very small and there are no restaurants on site. But for these few issues I may have ranked the resort as a 10.

Please keep in mind the lack of inexpensive places near the resort to buy groceries and recommend you go to Costco ( 5 miles south of airport) , Safeway or Walmart ( an additional 10 minutes south) before heading the 20 miles north to the resort. The Big Island is very big and be prepared for long drives when going out for dinner or for the day.

Activities

My wife did the Dolphin encounter and the contact with the Dolphins was very minimal. They offered a discount of 20% but even with that the fee was over $160 and didn't feel it was a good value. In Mexico or other locations you are able to actually swim with the dophins and have much more interaction.

There is a great beach ( Hapuna Beach) about 10 minutes north of the resort

Continue another 10 minutes north for lunch or dinner at Cafe Pesto.

If you drive north I recommend Island Dreams( i think that was the name) in Hawi for great ice cream or coffee

One day we started out early to see the Volcano and stopped at Tex's for great Malasadas ( donuts) and stopped before Hilo at Akaka Falls ( easier walk) before going to Hilo for the market, Pescatores for lunch ( great Italian food at a fair price), Big Island Candy Factory ( for yummy samples) and then to the park to see the active plume going out of the volcano. At sunset we doubled back toward Hilo and went south on Route 130 to end for a short hike over the lava flow to see the glow of the current lava as it enters into the Pacific. This was an all day event but worth the journey.

We also rented snorkel gear in Kailua- Kona at Boss Frogs for a very low price and headed down to 2 step for great snorkeling

We usually had dinner in our unit ( using the new grills in between to units) as we had busy days and didn't want to venture out.

The Big Island does not provide much night life unless you want to drive to Kailua-Kona and hang out at a bar..

In all HGVC is a high quality exchange and the Big Island provided a great vacation.

4 of 5  As Expected at the Hilton, A TripAdvisor Member, Exeter, October 1, 2008

Pretty much as expected from the reviews on Trip Advisor. Expensive but you generally got what you paid for. Dolphin experience great for the kids and just about the right price. Kids loved the pools and lagoon as did we because the kids were happy. You'll enjoy it here because the setting is great and the amenities good but remember you pay for most things and its not cheap. As for the big Island great spot especially the Volcano Park.

4 of 5  HGVC Waikoloa and Big Island general review, A TripAdvisor Member, California, September 1, 2008

HGVC Big Island Hawaii

My family of 3 (wife and 8year old) went to the Big Island and stayed at the HGVC in Waikoloa. HGVC is approximately 30 minutes drive from the airport and very easy to find. The facility is very nice with a heated pool on site. The 2 bedrooms are spacious and comes with a full kitchen. There are no amenities in the kitchen, ie…sugar, spices, saran wrap….nothing; only pots, pans, dishes, cups and utensils. Knowing how expensive food is at the resort, we stopped at Costco as soon as we left the airport. It’s about 15 minutes opposite direction from HGVC (towards Kailua/Kona).

HGVC has a shuttle that runs every 30 minutes that takes you to the Hilton Waikoloa so you can use the resort swimming pool and facilities. The resort pool is probably the coldest pool I’ve ever been in. This is my second time at the resort and if there was a reason that I would not go back to the Hilton, it just might be because of the pool water temperature. I swear it’s colder than the ocean and I’m shivering the whole time I’m in the pool—my body just doesn’t seem to warm to it at all. The ocean water is much better in terms of temperature. Snorkeling is great at Kahaluu state beach. Everyone seems to know about this place. There’s more fish here than at Hanauma Bay in Oahu. Also, “A” Bay across from the Marriott is a great place for turtle spotting.

If you’re going towards the Hilo side to view the volcano’s then make a stop at Pescatore’s Italian restaurant. It’s absolutely local-people food at local prices. Tasty and relatively cheap ($6.95 for lunch pasta).

On the way to Hilo, stop at the Waipio Overlook. Very pretty.

Also on the way to Hilo, a stop at the Akaka Falls is an enjoyable rest stop. It’s a short and easy hike (you can even do it in sandals) to see a very pretty waterfall.

The King’s and (the new) Queen’s shops at the Waikoloa resort area are very expensive for food and daily items. If you don’t want to drive towards Kailua/Kona for groceries, then go the other direction towards Waimea. It’s about 25 minutes from the resort and has all the local food stores and a real grocery store.

At the end of the trip, when you have to return the rental car you may or may not need to fill up on gas once you get to the airport. I drove slowly and efficiently and by the time I got to the airport, the gas line still read full. However, if you need to fill up before returning (to avoid the hefty surcharges) then the closes 24 hour gas station is 3 miles past the airport. Turn left at Hina Lani street (the 3rd signal light) that takes you towards Costco and make an immediate right; there’s a Tesoro station there.

4 of 5  Nice Setup for Families, A TripAdvisor Member, Los Angeles, CA, July 11, 2008

I first want to say that there are almost no reviews out there on this property, which made it difficult to decide between this or getting 2 rooms at the Hilton Waikoloa Village( which we were at last year). That being said, I must say that we were very happy with our decision to stay here overall. Here are the pros: The property itself is beautiful, great setting, new units, granite , flat screen tvs in all rooms, etc.We had plenty of wiggle room for our 2 kids and my son's friend who tagged along. We had a 2 br 2 bath ground floor unit, golf course view ( only the top floor of certain units have minimal ocean views so its really not worth the extra $). Ground floor allowed kids to play in grassy area off large patio with pocket glass doors leading out to furnished lanai(nice). Couch in living area folds out also. Kings Shops and Queens Marketplace are both open for Starbucks, shopping, etc. Lovely heated pool with slide and fountains was a hit with my family ...especially at night under the stars and palm trees!!! Brought powdered lemonade and made frozen lemonades in the blender at night for my kids to take to the pool. BIG HIT! Ok now the cons: Shuttle service to main hotel ( Hilton Waikoloa Village)was kind of a pain. Although it ran VERY prompt and on schedule (on the half hour), it was necessary, as walking with kids would be over a mile each way. Tip, : take the shuttle to the hotel, but when you're ready to go home, just fork over 5 bucks to the taxi drivers to bring you home. On the way home the shuttle gets full & makes like 3 stops, and if you're impatient like me...its worth the extra 25 or 30 bucks you might spend overall. Second, lack of food on property. There is NO food or restaurant on this property. Only a pool bar that serves drinks. Our only saving grace was that we rented a car ( parking is free) . But if we didn't have groceries, kids would have starved the first 2 nights. With the time change, my youngest fell asleep before dinner the first night. After a full day at the HWV, its hard to leave the comfort of your unit to go back to pay 300 bucks for a dinner at the expensive although good restaurants at the HWV.On day 2 we wised up and picked up a couple of steaks etc. at Safeway.Boy we could have sold those steaks for top dollar to like 5 different families who were all searching for food & salivating over them! They really need a restaurant or a closer store ( I saw a store kinda like Trader Joes/ Bristol Farms opening in Queens Marketplace VERY VERY soon, as well as a Macaroni Grill). Also, maid service only comes once a week. We just dealt with it...called for clean towels, etc.Overall, it was very pleasant. If you have groceries you'll be just fine. Also Roy's in Kings Shops was yummy.Just make sure you have a reservation ( that goes for pretty much ALL the nicer restaurants). Our last and most annoying issue was that you can NOT do room charges at the Hilton Waikoloa Villiage. You may use the pools, lagoon, etc for free, but bring your credit card because they have not worked this out yet. For surf lessons, I recommend Kona MIke's . He is awesome with the kids & teens! Hope this helps those of you who are looking for reviews. This is still overall a great family spot, a clean and comfortable location, and an awesome family vacation over the 4th of July. Still, Waikoloa Resort overall , as it continues to expand ,ranks right up there with the best we've visited .

5 of 5  ファミリーで楽しく!, A TripAdvisor Member, 東京, October 20, 2008

2 of 5  State Park Resort, A TripAdvisor Member, California, June 4, 2008

This high-end resort is open to the public. For $80/a day locals can use the facilities. Very unfortunate for those who pay over $300/night to have the same privileges. The resort is more like a state park with locals trashing the pool area by bringing in hordes of items (pizza boxes, coolers, watermelon, etc.), going in the water with their clothes on, and did I mention stealing personal items of guests?

Hotel's response? not our problem! deal with it.....

NEVER EVER STAYING AT A HILTON!
