OK motel if you don't need sleep, just playtime for the kids | Read all reviews
Ideal for kids that want to play and make a lot of noise with the motel ameneties. However, if you desire to get a good night's sleep you will be disappointed since the building is constructed to have noise from the above floor, hallways and the outside come directly to each interior room. Vehicles from the highway and trains are heard in the room, too. The motel is not handicap accessible and has a lot of stairs. The motel manager would not allow us to stay in our prepaid room (through Orbitz) unless we gave a credit card imprint. However, he would keep our money and let us find another place to stay. It's obvious that his arrogance is passed on to the front desk staff who follow his command. My wife and I will never stay here again nor will we recommend it to friends.

We booked at this hotel because we were looking for something affordable but still nice. That is EXACTLY what we got. The room was clean and nice and had a great view. The staff was friendly. The "continental" breakfast had much more than any other I've seen. It even included specialty drinks, fresh fruit, and several a make-your-own waffle iron's! The pool facilities were nice, clean, and warm. The hot tub area was well maintained and again, a pleasant surprise. Great hotel. Great Value! Ours was a unique situation: We'd double booked reservations in the area at Thanksgiving (space is at a premium due to a major event at Spirit Mountain) and forgot to cancel the one for the RRI. We were charged for the room and I threw myself on the mercy of the management to see if they could "do anything" for us with regard to the charge. Understand that the charge WAS JUSTIFIED; it was MY mistake that I didn't cancel (old age is he**). I spoke to the front desk supervisor and she pretty much said I was SOL as far as them "doing anything" about my error. I said I'd like to speak with the GM and she didn't encourage that, saying he'd tell me the same thing. I said I'd like to speak with him regardless. When I hooked up with him 3-4 days later, I again acknowledged that the error was mine, threw myself on his mercy and he gave us two nights at the hotel on December 25-26, COMP'D. We needed a hotel in the area anyway and I told him we come up several times a year. There's more to the story. I brought small gift baskets for the front desk supervisor and the GM when we checked in – I am shameless and transparent. We were treated very graciously by the staff (they all knew the circumstances, I'm sure) and found them all quite congenial and courteous to us. They had upgraded our standard room to a king room and the room was clean and functional. Apparently they've been doing some remodeling over the course of time and I think ours was one that had been redecorated. It wasn't fancy but it was adequate. The plumbing worked and the water was hot! We were on the floor above the pool – never saw the pool so I can't comment about it. I loved the 24/7 cappuccino machine. Someone who posted a review here complained about having to make your own waffles from pre-mixed and -measured portions. Jeez! They don't get any fresher than when you make them yourself and my husband loved it. We're a couple geezers who would stay there again and likely will within the next 5-6 months. My girlfriend and I recently traveled to Duluth to spend a weekend for the two of us and we chose the Red Roof Inn. Not only was the price a great advantage, but it was a very pleasant experience for the both of us. The rooms were clean, and the bathrooms stocked with fresh towels. I would recommend it to those wishing for a nice and quiet getaway. Newly converted property is now a Red Roof Inn. (Formerly Travelodge). Staff is exceptionally friendly. This is a budget motel. Housekeeping is above average for a motel. Pool area is big and open with deck with breathtaking vista off in the distance. Public computer in lobby came in very handy to check email and get info on local attractions. Pets are only allowed in smoking rooms - that was our only objection. Very smokey. Nice location on I-35, just minutes from Duluth's most popular Canal Park area. Save a bundle on your next stay in Duluth and check out the Big Red Roof Inn on the hill. I stayed here last week. I paid $59 or $69 for the night. The bathroom was small and had only a shower stall which was very strange, but for the price it was clean and had comfortable beds. The breakfast was good with waffle makers, bagels, English muffins, and little boxes of cereals. It had an indoor pool with hot tub. For the money, it was a good value. We checked out early from a hotel that was terrible but closer to our business event to check into the Red Roof. It was, as I mention, further away, but it could not have been worse than this other hotel. The access road to the Red Roof is a bit tricky to find, and there are no elevators which was a KILLER for my knee. But other than those two things, this hotel was a savior! Clean rooms. Helpful staff (that helped me carry my bags and cooler on the way down). Decent views. GREAT breakfast (waffles, for FREE :) No bad odors or treatment by staff. This was a good hotel where I'd stay again. In reviewing the reviews, I agree that parking was tight when the hotel is busy. The breakfast area was cozy but not nearly as small as some suggested. And if you don't want the crowds or shortage of food at breakfast, get there earlier in the morning. Every hotel continental breakfast I've ever been to is crowded and nuts a half hour before it closes. You snooze, you lose. I also wasn't happy with the non-cancelation policy. And it's a small item, but the hotel was sneaky about the room safe fee. It's small fee (about $3) but I don't recall being asked if I wanted it. When I told them I wasn't paying for it, they quietly deducted it from my bill, almost like they didn't want anyone else to hear me mention it. A $3 fee times 100 rooms times 365 days a year... a nice way to pad your bottom line. Overall, I thought it was a clean and comfortable place. Just get up early and read the bill before you pay. Good advice anywhere I suppose. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear. This is a lovely hotel with well kept grounds and comfy new beds. The Breakfast area was remodeled and its very inviting. I just stayed at the Red Roof Spirit Mountain. I have stayed there before also. The Good...it's clean. The front desk staff is very courteous. I can't complain about the price. The breakfast has lots of choices. My husband like that there was an all hours coffee/latte machine. One morning we arrived right at the cut off time for breakfast and they still let us eat. The Bad...The pool was pretty cold. We were in the room (#227) right next to the breakfast room...we were woken up between 6 and 6:30 AM...to the sounds of the breakfast area being prepared. I could hear just about every word of the conversation going on...plus the sounds of the drawers and cupboards being opened and closed. This went on for 20 to 30 minutes. I'm a pretty heavy sleeper and it woke me up. My daughter is a light sleeper and she was awake the whole time. Also, housekeeping knocked on our door at 10:15 (checkout is at 11AM)...before I could get to the door(and I actually got up the ran because my daughter was napping)...she had opened it. Bascially, if you want a decently priced hotel and you don't mind not being right in Duluth and don't need fancy...then, this is a decent place to stay. I would stay there again...I would just make sure my room wasn't near the breakfast area (#227). This hotel is located on the crest of the hill overlooking beautiful Duluth. If your room is on the 2nd or 3rd floor and facing I-35, you can see Lake Superior from your window. We liked the easy access to I-35, and it didn't take long to drive to the attractions we wanted to see. Good breakfast selection, and since the breakfast area is pretty small, we just took our food to our room. Whirlpool and sauna are located in a room separate from the pool, offering a little more privacy and retreat from activity at the pool. We found the price lower than most area hotels, and it was a comfortable place to stay. If you're looking for a well-kept motel that is a decent price, check out the Red Roof Inn of Duluth. A quick listing of the positives and negatives : POSITIVES*** -clean nice sized rooms -comfy beds and pillows -adequate towel supply(suggestion: bring your own, their towels are small) -convenient location to freeway access, close to downtown canal park area. -pleasant employees. -fridge, microwave, blowdryer, coffee makers in room. -NOT JUST THE LOCAL CHANNELS,LOTS OF CABLE CHANNEL SELECTIONS INCLUDING HBO. NEGATIVES*** -Don't expect breakfast here. Although, they do have a good selection for a continental type breakfast, the lines are so long and the breakfast area is so small. when they mentioned waffles, they also forgot to mention that you have to make your own using a waffle iron and some pre-made mix!!!!! it was like a stampede. Unless you plan to get up around 6:00 A.M. for breakfast, you'd rather cross the street to Mcdonalds for breakfast. (we took one look, and didn't even bother with breakfast there).Imagine making breakfast with 40 guests in your small kitchen, that's how it felt like. -Inadequate parking for the number of allowed guests. -carpeting needs a makeover Well I stayed at this place in February 07 and it was ok other than the fact that it was CROWDED. Continental Breakfast? You're joking right? In the morning, if it is a weekend, just plan on not eating there because the eating area is about the size of our downstairs bathroom. The food runs out super fast because everyone is chowing down and it was full so it made it worse. It was ok considering it is cheap and in a good location... but geez I wanted to eat. Oh yeah, and good luck with parking! (it was so crowded there was like nooo parking after 4PM) Enjoy your trip. =)

IF you book a room at any Red Roof Inn.. be aware that even if coorporate Red Roof says one thing the actual Inn is a franchize and they let them each make the rules. So when I tried to cancel a reservation I was not within the 72 hour window (they do not count check in day), so I said fine I will pay for the one night but please cancel the second night since it was 72 hours.. they said they would not since I booked two nights it was considered one reservation. Even though all the literature says you only pay the first night if you cancel. So just beware and ask more questions then I did! This place recently changed its name to become part of the Red Roof chain. We booked this through Hotwire.com and it ended up costing about $56 for a Saturday night, with two beds, which is a good price in this area for a weekend. During our weekend stay, it wasn't too busy. Our room was fine and the beds were pretty good. However, our kids wanted to swim and we wanted to use the hot-tub. The pool was very cold and not enjoyable at all. The hot tub was closed down, allegedly for repairs. Now when a pool is cold and the hot tub is closed and the hotel isn't very full, that makes me think that mgmt is just trying to save money by not heating the water. Don't know if the hot tub was really broken down or if they just shut it down because they wanted to save money on heating the water, especially since the hotel wasn't very full and they probably figured few people would complain. If the pool was warm and the hot tub was broke down, then I'd be more likely to believe that it was really broken. But this seems to be a trick of managers at many hotels to save money ... crank the heat way down on the pool and shut the hot tub down and say it needs repairs, especially when the hotel isn't very full and there are fewer people to complain. The free continental breakfast was pretty good, they even had a cappuccino machine which was a nice touch. However, the eating area was tiny, it doesn't seat very many people, and if you are lucky enough to get a table, you'll likely feel like there are too many people crammed into this small room. Might be better off eating in your room. Overall, if you book this place at a good price and don't intend to swim or use the hot tub, it's a decent place. If you do want to use the pool or hot-tub, I'd look elsewhere. We stayed here from 6/17 to 6/19/05, and it wasn't too bad. Our expectations were quite low from what other reviewers had said. We had a king bed on the top floor (room 305) on the opposite side of the freeway. Because of that, there was no freeway noise or upstairs neighbors to bother us, but we did hear every car that drove in and out of the parking lot. I can see that if there was a party in the parking lot, like the other reviewer complained of, you would hear it all. It was very clean, but did smell of smoke. Their breakfast is average, no hot food. There was a coffee maker, fridge, and microwave in our room, but no iron or ironing board. The bed was way more comfortable than what you would expect for a hotel of this caliber. The towels are thin, not very white, and limited in quantity. It is a complete rip-off for $149/night (because of Grandma's Marathon), and I certainly wouldn't stay there if I had other alternatives. But it was our only option this weekend. They definately need to soundproof the place, redecorate it, and make themselves ADA compliant. If you need wheelchair access, find another place. There is not even a ramp to get into the main lobby. It is also at least 5 miles from the Canal Park area, so if you want to stay near the canal, find another hotel. But if you're desperate and have no other options, this place will put a roof over your head, give you a clean room to sleep in, and feed you breakfast. So after driving a 12 hour day...we check in to our "non smoking room" which happens to smell like stale cigarettes, and the beds are hard as rocks. The best part is this hotel is that they claim everything is brand new, including the hard as a rock beds, when your charging 175.00/night you think they would of loosened up the pocket strings. I have very bad asthma, and can't be in a room that even smells of cigarettes... so after much arguing with the "manager on duty" (if you could even call her that) to refund our money so we can go somewhere else where i wont have respitory problems, she refuses... So we leave to get dinner... Call the hotel back to see if they'd want to give us a discount and keep it (even though at this point we already got another cheap motel) they refused and let us know they sold our room off already!!! So 1) we're out 175.00 and don't have a hotel because they sold it off without our consent?? To boot, this was all booked through expedia and they were just as helpless with the whole situation. Needless to say we're not fond of Duluth, MN in any way! Absolutely the crappiest service I have ever had bar none. Whoever answered the phone had no idea what she was doing...and service was a zero. Not what I expected. Do yourself a favor and stay away. Rooms were not to satisfaction, managers were very unprofessional and rude. Maid walked in without notice. Non-smoking rooms smelled of smoke. <> <> WOULD NOT ADVISE STAYING HERE We decided to block rooms there for our wedding when they were still Travelodge. They required a $150 deposit with the understanding it would be returned if 30% of the rooms blocked were booked by our guests. Somewhere between January of 2007 and June of 2007 they became Red Roof Inn and did not carry our block with the change over and did not notify us of the change. As a result, our guests that were calling to make the reservations were told there was no such block. When we re-opened the block, then they booked our guests for August, NOT September when our wedding was taking place! The guest service at this hotel was horrible and the staff there were not willing to work on it with at all. We also blocked rooms at the Edgewater (thank God!) and were not required to pay a deposit and we had no problems whatsoever. In our opinion this hotel has no business taking money from people if they can't even honor their own contracts. Think twice before using this as a venue for your wedding! HORRIBLE--the worst possible service ever! We booked two nights after being deceived into thinking this hotel had been renovated and that our satisfaction would be guaranteed! Yeah right! DON'T believe the pictures online!! So much for customer satisfaction! The door to our room had been kicked in--yes, kicked in...and no one bothered to fix it--so it had a 1 1/2 inch gap at the top, it shook back and forth--frame and all and it did not close securely. We had ZERO privacy to talk to one another as a family because we could be heard by every single person walking down the hallway. As well as HEARING every single person walking through the hallway--and considering we were on the main floor to the pool and the hot tub (which are on opposite ends of the hotel) and next to the stairs that led to the front counter---we heard everyone's conversations!! The cleaniness of the rooms and the entire hotel was awful...after being assured by the management that they have received many compliments on their cleanliness--I was appauled! There was pubic hair in the bath tub, around the floor in the bathroom and there was- God knows what- sprayed on the walls and doors. The way they patched holes in ceilings and the water damage throughout was ridiculous! We had a pool side room that when the WINDOW air conditioner was turned on--it sucked all of the clorine filled air from the pool area into our room! Lovely way to sleep! When we determined that we DID not want to stay another night and expose our children to this anymore...we were rudely told they would NOT credit our card for that night's stay even if we didn't stay with them. They offered a different room--but upon checking it out--I found the same uncleaniness in the bathtub once again. We argued with the Manager on duty and he was rude and cold and refused to offer any refund or discount---so we had to cancel our reservation at the other hotel we made last minute (which didn't try to charge us anyway) and planned to suck it up and stay another night to get our money's worth but by 5p.m. that evening upon trying to check back in--we were told they had rented our room and could only accomadate us with a one bed room--for a family of 4! We ended up stranded until 8p.m. when we found a hotel with a cancellation. They STILL have not credit ed our card and after speaking to the weekly manager I have determined that the only thing this hotel has managed to accomplish is how to be a great liar!! DO NOT STAY HERE!! Horrible: This hotel is way over-priced for what you get. I booked a Non-Smoking King Bed Suite for 1 night, on a weeknight, and the rate was a whopping $134.99. I thought this was quite expensive for a "Ref Roof" since they normally compaire to a Motel 6 / Super 8. When I made the reservation, all I asked for was a view of the lake (Superior) and a good internet connection. I received neither. The front reception desk staff seemed rushed, and frustrated. My room was more like an ecomony King room, and not a "suite." I had a "lovely" view of the parking lot. This hotel property does not have enough parking spaces for it's guests, so I had to park in a dirt water runoff area, and just my luck, it rained. The Pool, The Hot Tub (public), the Game Room, the Sauna, and the Breakfast area all all eachin their own seperate areas scattered all over the hotel, which totally makes no sense and is very confusing and inconvienient. The entire set-up at this hotel was wrong. There are (I assume) poolside rooms, but they literally open up their door, and take 3 steps in "wham!" they fall into the pool, I mean this totally makes no sense at all. My (No-Smoking) room smelled of cigarette smoke. The bright red (awful) carpeting had stains all over it, which looked terrible. Because of the excessive / and heavy rains, I had asked to extend my check-out by 1 extra hour, and the staff acted as if I was asking for a miracle from Jesus. It was an absolutely horrible, terrible experience, staying at this putrid hotel. NEVER AGAIN !! BE WARNED. [ SEPTEMBER 2007 ] I made a reservation for my family and I, but the next day, my daughter developed the flu. I immediately called, to cancel the reservation, and was told that I could not... "no exceptions". I told them that I would send the information note from the Doctor, and they said "I'm sorry, but we will still charge your credit card... no exceptions". NOTE: This was two days before we were scheduled to stay at the hotel. There was no way that we could bring our daughter to the hotel, with the flu, and I do not think that the hotel would like that either. Beware of this strict hotel rule, if you decide to stay here. The staff was not helpful at all, and showed little concern. We have stayed here in the past, and the hotel was okay, but their strict "no cancellation" policy is out of line. We will never stay here again! We stayed at the Travelodge because they had a ski package. I was assured a nonsmoking room and was told the hotel was 90% smoke free. The walls must be paperthin because all I could smell all night was cigarette smoke. I asked the front desk if the rooms next to ours was smoking and they said no. I don't know if this is a reflection on the hotel or the clientele. The rooms were very small, as was the pool area and the continental breakfast area. We did get a ski package, but next time I would stay at the Comfort Inn were you also get a ski discount on your room and the rooms don't stink like smoke. We made reservations there, stating we needed handicap access. When we got there, you had to go down stairs to register. The room was in terrible condition. We were going to stay two or three nights. The first night, there was a drunken teen party right outside our window!! There was a fight in the parking lot, and glass broken all over. When we called the front desk, we were told by the TEENAGER WORKING THE DESK "noise? a fight? I don't hear anything". We checked out the next morning called the 800 number and complained. The owner of that location was to call us. He never did. That was just how interested the owner was in what was going on in his property. Go back? NEVER! We went and stayed across the street. Wonderful place. This place is awful. My husband is 6'2", and I'm 5'9", and the beds were way too short. The room seems like it is slanting downhill. It's right on the interstate, so unless you keep the ac on all the time, that's all you here. If you request the king bed, there's only one room, and it's used for smoking / non smoking. There are better places to stay here.
